Dinosaur Train Headcanons: The Pteranodon Kids

Whaddya know, the headcanons are coming back once again - but this time we have a headcanon post is not on Chuggington. Today we're taking a dive into my take on the Jim Henson Company series, Dinosaur Train, a show where instead of talking trains with faces riding the rails, we have talking dinosaurs and pterosaurs riding in trains that run through time-traveling tunnels to different Mesozoic time periods.

This show is quite underated among PBS' ranks, not 100% scientifically accurate, but it does its best. The characters are fun and it's got a pretty unique aesthetic. However due to its agenda it's also one that doesn't quite feel up to its full potential story-wise, a lot of episodes basically feel like the same old filler and pretty forgettable, particularly the half of the first season, (also not the biggest fan of how the animation looks in that one) but it's a show that shows its overall improvement in later seasons.

So compared to Chuggington, not necessarily a 'hyperfixation' of mine, but if dinosaurs or trains are your taste, worth a watch.

But with the recent confirmation by the Henson Comapny themselves of a reboot in the works and a massive spike in appreciation for Dinosaur Train lately, I finally feel that now is as good a time as any for me to share my takes on our little but mighty stars, The Pteranodon Kids, Buddy Tyrannosaurus and his pteranodon siblings Tiny, Shiny and Don:

Overtime, The Pteranodon Family become more and more frequent vistors of Troodon Town, which gives them stuff to do if they don't have any other adventure ideas. The kids gain new hobbies and pastimes and often take the opportunity to help out the troodons and other residents around town.

Mr. Conductor babysits the kids sometimes and has a spare room in the Town Lodge they spend the night in. Best part is that it's close to the depot and they can watch the trains from there.

One of Buddy's pastimes while in Troodon Town is going through the Town Lodge's massive library, from reading about different dinosaur facts to learning about Dinosaur Train Industries' past and trying to uncover its mysterious.

Tiny's pastime in Troodon Town is doing gardening around Town Lodge or the town square near the station. If she's not doing that, she's either exploring, or practicing flying.

Shiny's pastimes in Troodon Town include more calming and simple activities like tidying up, spa trips, or making crafts and fashionable accesories like shell crowns, necklaces, bracelets, and leaf skirts. If she's not doing that, she's either over at Troodon Tech helping out Tricia, the conductor of the Solar Train, who she admires - or of course, taking any chance she can to be closer to her not-so-subtle crush, Gilbert Troodon, Mr. Conductor's nephew.

Don in-canon has an obsession for digging holes and loves getting his hands dirty, and eventually finds a way to put it to good use. Not only does he help Tiny with her gardening while at home or during their stays in Troodon Town, he developes an interest in building sculptures, and goes on to enter competitions. Overtime, Don also takes up being a dance instructor - and is surprisingly strict enough about it to give Shiny a run for her money.

Buddy and Tiny both take up basic maintenance and are allowed to help out in the workshops from time to time, as in canon, both are particularly fascinated by The Dinosaur Train and other inventions and machinery by D.T.I. and don't particularly mind their share of dirty work. As time goes on, they begin to tinker with inventions dare we might say vehicles of their own...

While in canon, Buddy and Tiny both aspire working for The Dinosaur Train, Tiny also enjoys doing flying tricks. One of Tiny's other dreams is to be a champion flyer, competing in flying races and stunt shows. While she is indeed already a skilled flyer for her age, this unfortunately means the daring little pteranodon can be sometimes careless when it comes to her flying, leading to occasional accident. Mainly it's trees, water, or mud pits she ever crashes into, but she does sometimes need to be rescued, and her scrapes caused by her own recklessness displease the anxious likes of her parents, Buddy, and Shiny to no end.

In canon, Shiny is confirmed in S1 to be the oldest, and likes being in charge. In my take however, Buddy is the more common leader, as despite his occasional anxiety, I see him as the most level-headed of the four. I realize just how much Buddy and Shiny actually have a lot in common personality-wise though. As keen and optimistic as Buddy is usually shown to be, he is cautious and prone to overthink, and likes doing things with a proper plan in place - although that doesn't mean he won't land himself in a mishap or two... Shiny on the other hand, while she too is prone to anxiety to the point of being a bit of a scaredy-egg in certain situations, she's fully outgoing with her siblings and is more of a 'headstrong' type of leader, hence the likes of Tiny or Don seeing her as "bossy." Shiny of course only means well, but she jumps at any chance to be in charge, as things don't go wrong when she is - according to her... Depending on Shiny's mood, her ways of leading or doing things in general can sometimes clash with Buddy's, in regards to whose decisions are actually sensible, but the two are never at each other in bad taste and can put right their mistakes in the end.

Out of the three pteranodons Buddy constantly worries for Tiny's safety the most, which can get on Tiny's nerves, but lessons are learned and Buddy is just the type impossible to stay mad at, and Tiny realizes that she and the others are practically lost without him.

Shiny and Buddy both get teased to no end for their feelings toward Gilbert and Annie Tyrannosaurus respectively. Shiny is certainly none too pleased about it, while Buddy just tries to casually brush it off and deny it, but lying is one thing he's terrible at. Both are hesitant to make the first move, but they find their ways to make it work sooner or later.

Tiny has rare instances where she's up at night bored and decides to sneak around exploring. She sometimes tries to tempt Buddy into coming with her, but he refuses unless it's absolutely an emergency or he feels Tiny may get into danger.

Shiny gets pranked the most between the siblings, particularly by Tiny or Don. She does not like it.

Don finds his own safe places where he's free to dig his holes without the risk of bothering anyone and getting in trouble with his parents. But he's still a playful free spirit when digging, so others with him run the risk of being hit with dirt or mud if they don't watch where they stand, much to Shiny's annoyance.

Annie's parents Delores and Boris are as careful as possible when training Buddy for hunting. They already have to keep their adventurous daugther in check, but they know it'll be harder - and more dangerous for timid Buddy to adjust.

Alright, now for the elephant in the room: All we know from canon is that Mrs. Pteranodon found Buddy's egg all alone one day and brought it home. They do not elaborate how his egg got in the middle of nowhere nor who Buddy's biological parents are and what happened to them. To put the one option left for me bluntly: they're dead. From time to time Buddy wonders about his original parents and it breaks his pure heart that they would just abandon him in the middle of nowhere before he even hatched. But he comes to terms with the fact that they are terrible people for doing so, and that his real family are The Pteranodons, who constantly remind him just how much they love and would do anything for him. He eventually gains the courage to ask Mrs. P more about the day she found him. She does not know about the fate of his biological parents after they left him, but she was out for a walk by herself before returning to the nest to tend to her eggs, when a feeling overcame her. An instinct, leading her in a certain direction. As heavy rain started to fall, she wandered deeper into the woods, and there it was. One little egg all by itself, with no sign of its nest or parents anywhere. The nerve, she thought, what mother would do such a thing?! So she did what any good mother would do. Carrying the egg back to the nest all by herself was a difficult and rather dangerous journey, but by the end of the day, she made it home with the egg, both in one piece. And the rest was history.

One by one, her kids popped free, baby pteranadons one two three! "I'll name you Tiny, Shiny, and Don." But Tiny said "wait, there's one more mom!" The last little baby was a different size, with teeth and a tail and big green eyes. He didn't look anything like the rest! "What am I doing in a pteranodon nest?" But dear old Mrs. Pteranodon said, "Oh this is your family and I'm your mom. we may be different, but we're all creatures! All dinosaurs have different features! Come on Buddy we'll take a vacation, I'll get us a ticket at Pteranodon Station, We'll travel the world in sunshine and rain and meet all the species on the

A Look Back at my Benji Fics 1: Kenji's Family

So the first fanfiction I wrote was called Sweet Survivor. This was right after season one and before we knew when season two was coming out.

I had written it as a gift to my sister, as we both fell in love with one Benjamin Fitzgerald Pincus.

However...all I had was my knowledge from the books and movies. I had no idea where the story would go. So like those Pteranodons...I winged it.

But seriously. It led to my own lore when it came to the campers. If I was going to write my own ending, I had to make some guesses and choices how I saw characters. And I would reuse these characters again and again.

So first: The Kons

(Btw, this was pre-Daniel Kon. And I will collapse as not to cause endless scrolling for passers by)

Kosei Kon

Kosei was what I hoped Daniel could’ve been.

I had created him between Season 1 and 2 of Camp Cretaceous when writing Sweet Survivor and kept him as “Kenji’s Dad” in every one of my fics since.

Kosei was someone who was selfish and needed a reality check. Someone who pushed his son to the side, but would do anything to keep him safe and sound. Who would be able to look at himself and do anything for Kenji’s safety.

Daniel Kon, he is not.

A lot of the background with Kosei was he was in construction and/or finance. I also put in a few fics he and Simon were best friends in their twenties and while Simon got more whimsical, Kosei got more serious. He was also from a traditional family who valued hard work, but not really family ties.

A very "I bust my ass, so you don't have to" mentality that backfires tremendously.

This would change during his second marriage and the Jurassic World incident.

I’ll go into Candy later, but she was the fuse that started the fire under his ass when it came to not only finding his son, but repairing their relationship. Most fics also had him a little awkward with his younger daughter, another OC,  since I had a theory Kenji was only raised by nannies and saw his dad once a day in person or on facetime. So he being around for nightly feedings and the terrible twos and first everythings were something he had yet to experience.

 Another funny quirk is he tries to learn about things he doesn’t understand, like phrases or other sexualities, hence why he’s a little overenthusiastic about Kenji being bisexual because “You’ve trained for this possibility, Kosei!”

A big part of making Kosei was making him terrible at poor communication and posturing instead of comforting his obviously emotionally neglected son. He would find it hard and way too new, but he was always written to, despite being a bit aloof and closed off, ready to finally step up when his son needed him for life advice or just to pass the time.

He’s also not afraid to put his career and reputation on the line when it comes to his children.

Candela "Candy" Kon

Candy was kinda a throw away line from Kenji and never mentioned again.

We didn’t know back then if she was his dad’s girlfriend, his stepmom or just an assistant for Mr. Kon. I went to the stepmom angle cause it almost felt like the scene from “Up” when Russel talked about his dad.

I really really reeeeeeally am tired of the evil stepmother trope.

So I created Candela Kon, Kosei’s wife.  (I will be referring to my OC Kosei Kon rather than Daniel Kon as Kenji’s father.)

I wanted her and Kenji to have an awkward relationship rather than a hostile one. It was more important to me that she was trying, and it just was…awkward. I 100% believe Kenji’s Dad, Daniel or Kosei, would marry without informing Kenji or Candy. And she would ream him out and immediately try to bond with Kenji, cause her husband may be a clueless dolt, but there’s a child now and his feelings are the most important thing right now.

Since Jurassic Park is located on Isla Nublar set in Costa Rica, I wanted her to be an orphan who grew up there and later immigrated to America before returning to work at Jurassic World.

Her being an orphan was never really touched on, but it would help her connect with Kenji, as she knows how it is to want parents and they're not there.

On top of that, she often had the stereotypical health crazes, though toned enough that it was more a pursuit of knowledge to see what was good or beneficial to her family. Hence why she would like Ben so much, as I wrote him not only as food conscious, but also with an interest in herbology for medical purposes. (More about that later.)

Before the series, she and Kosei would meet and start their romance because of a pregnancy that unfortunately didn’t make it to term. Candy would have built a relationship with Kosei, and both agree to stay married as they make each other happy and both love Kenji.

Carmen Kon

Carmen was the daughter of Kosei and Candy, and Kenji’s baby sister. In most stories, she is Candy's rainbow baby.

Most of the time she’s between the ages of yet to be born and 15. At any age, she’s a pretty chill little kid who loves games, her babysitter/nanny Dave and Kenji.

As a kid under 6, she’s obsessed with Kenji and later Ben. Usually getting very excited any time Kenji enters a room, she’s often corralled by Dave, who I love too much not to come back in every fic.

As a teen in Sweater Weather, she is very self-conscious, as she’s being bullied for not being like her brother by other schoolmates. She keeps to her games and loves the mall, but will have bad days where she shuts off her phone and walks around the properties. She bonds with Ben over being bullied and shares her interests in video games and gender studies.

So that's the Kons.

Dinosaur AU Chiley, but Riley is introducing Chase to his family. Matt is a huge Alamosaurus, Kaylee is equally tiny as Riley bc she's a dineobellator basically texan velociraptor, and Hope, the Griffin Siblings' mom is an Ojoraptorsaurus a medium size dino. Chase is utterly terrified of Matt, who could easily just use one of his forelegs to just swat him away. Kaylee is vibing tho, bc she has another tol person to stand on. Hope just gives Chase some like leaf cake thing to greet him into the family. Also Riley built a lil nest on Chase's crest. Chase is scared of using his crest to make sounds bc he's worried he'll wreck Riley's nest. Riley and Kaylee can kill anything bc they're carnivores, tho it's fine with Matt and Hope bc Hope is an omnivore and Matt believes Riley and Kaylee can do no wrong. Also when the Griffin Siblings and Hope go places they all ride on Matt's back bc he's huge.

Just remembered when I used to watch Dinosaur Train…

I had the Dinosaur A to Z song memorized and sung it so much to the point where even my mom was starting to remember some of the names—

But wow, a cartoon where there is an adopted kid and it’s actually treated normal? And this was like 2009? Wow! Holy Shit!

Like, this T-Rex egg somehow ended up in a pteranodon nest and he questions it like “Huh?” Bc they’re all confused as to how a T-rex egg got into their nest. And Mrs. Pteranodon goes “Oh this is your family and I’m your mom! We may be different, but we’re all creatures. All dinosaurs have different features”

And because of this, they always ride the Dinosaur Train to travel the world and see all different species to show how everyone is different. I also find it cool how in some episodes they take him to see other T-Rexes and they learn more about them. Like the time Buddy loses a tooth, Pteranodons don’t have teeth so they don’t know much and so Buddy’s mom takes him to Rexville to learn that his teeth will in fact come back.

Like…Wow…2009 cartoons were way better at teaching me about Dinosaurs and representing non-traditional families than kid cartoons now!
