I find it very interesting that one of the medical education bigwigs I've been working with this year disappears once shit hits the fan and lets another more senior person be the bad guy to confront me. Especially since she was part of the reason why my entire schedule got messed up in the first place and why I had a small breakdown last June.
Granted, it doesn't help that the person being a bad guy is not super friendly to start with.
And yes a big part of why I'm dealing with some stuff right now is a result of my own actions and my own trust issues with authority fogures and my crippling anxiety with asking for help. and I fully take responsibility for what happened and work with my therapist to help sooth out the kinks.
But I do find the bigwigs politicking to be kind of underhanded and a dick move to use the more senior assistant dean as a metaphorical gun to get me to do stuff. She was supposed to work with me on this. Yet we had one meeting before I got tossed to the higher up. And she really didn't do all that much besides telling me I have a high chance of not matching and to do another specialty, and then tell me I'm at a slightly high chance of not matching again, a week before nrmp cert is due, despite me interviewing at multiple top programs in the country. This is the second time she almost uses a scare tactic on me because I may not match, sets my world on fire, and trigger a depressive episode.
I do believe that she and the rest of the deans want students to do well and to match, but my own eperi3nces and those I've heard about really makes it obvious that the schools priority is more so reputation than what is best foe the student, and so many of the "initiatives" are as much for the sake of doing something for the sake of looking good.
And the more senior dean that got used as a weapon of psychological intimidation? Ditto with the whole priority of protecting the schools reputation. But she's less sociable and less good at appearing empathetic. Less good at making people feel warm and fuzzy. Still kind of manipulative though. I'm glad I didn't go ask her for adhd accommodations. My wariness about her feels more justified.
Out of all the admin people I've dealt with, u still think my mstp director as the most sincere in terms of helping students.
Also last rant. I didn't meet any of the deans in my entire 7 years at my program until now. I literally used to walk by the more senior dean multiple times a day omw to school and omw home. She never recognized me. I am a bottom quartile student, but I've never failed a single test in the entire time I was there. I'm a lowkey student and not very extroverted, but I do solid work. The number of publications i put out during graduate school is probably in top 1-2% across the entire school. I've gotten endowed fellowships and given talks at multiple world class conferences. I don't need recognition, and i fully realize that a part of why I had those accomplishments is related to social networking related to my former PI and my parents (Also the reason I never made formal complaints about ferpa violations and whatnot despite it being a direct trigger for php). But I find it funny that when everything is sunny, the dean doesn't even recognize me even when I walk past her a dozen times a week for 6 years. But when shit hits the fan it is all "look we don't know each other, but how did you get into this situation?" "Oh. You were in treatment? Maybe you should just go back to treatment. If you are this overwhelmed right now, I don't know if you can handle residency. This transition is rough!" (Becaise God forbid high functioning ND ppl with multiple psych dx go to medical school. Also you don't know me. You don't know why this happened. You don't known how I specifically will handle residency. My therapist and psych both think I'm fine so forgive me if I ignore you). "Look I know it can be embarrassing when something like [situation] happens" (actually no I'm not embarrassed. I straight up don't trust you to a) not judge me and b) have my best interests at heart. And I think I'm pretty justified). People have said similar things about our medical education office, but it definitely feels super legit in light of recent events

hello everyone!
i had someone request a breakdown of what my medical school/MSTP application looked like, so here we go!
FIRST - a disclaimer! this is my application, and it worked for me. it doesn’t look like the application of my classmates and other medical school friends who also got in. one of my friends got a below average MCAT, but her clinical experience and extracurriculars meant she got into (and is going to!) a highly-ranked medical school. on the other hand, my application was weighted fairly heavily in the direction of academics, since that’s my strength!
also, keep in mind i was applying to medical scientist training programs with the goal of getting an MD/PhD -- my app is also pretty research heavy
onto the specifics!
general
i went to a small liberal arts college with a focus on research. nearly every student does a senior thesis, and science senior theses usually involve lots of lab work/data generation done by the student.
i double-majored in mathematics and biochemistry & molecular biology, and between those classes, gen eds, and music, i was generally over full-time but just under the credit limit per semester.
i took the MCAT in May of 2018, and applied that summer. my AMCAS was in July 9th, and I got approved ~August 10th. this was between my junior (17-18) and senior (18-19) years. i matriculated at my med school in july of 2019.
numbers
GPA - 3.97 (ish? i got two A-s, and everything else was As)
MCAT - 519 (130 on three sections, 129 on one. i don’t remember which one though whoops)
clinical experience
shadowing - shadowed with two different doctors - an oncologist over the course of a semester, and a clinical pathologist for a day. total # of hours - relatively low, maybe 15-25.
clinical volunteering - i volunteered at a free clinic near my college for one afternoon every week or so during most of junior spring and senior year. total # of hours - ~60 hrs
medical ethics program - related to the longitudinal oncology shadowing. once a month, throughout the spring semester of my junior year, we would meet to discuss articles we’d been assigned to read on a topic eg: end of life care, malpractice, etc. total # of hours - ~10 hrs
research experience
research assistant, yeast genetics lab - i worked in this lab during the spring of my first year and during the summer after. it was my first lab/research experience, and it taught me a lot regarding lab techniques and lab mentality. garnered me my one and (still) only publication! total # of hours - 400+ hrs
research assistant, computational biology lab - i worked (and went on to do my senior thesis) in this lab during my junior year. it was partially an excuse to get started with my thesis coding early, because it was going to take a lot of time, but it also helped me get acquainted with my thesis advisor! total # of hours - ?
research intern, cancer research center - this was an internship i applied for that was specifically for students with a year left in college that occurred the summer between my junior and senior year. i worked with a biostatistician on developing a machine-learning model to predict disease risk based off of demographic data. i learned a lot about R, statistics, and regression models. i also learned that i don’t like R, statistics, and machine learning models lmao. note: this didn’t technically go in my AMCAS iirc, because i applied while i was *at* the internship. i did talk about it at interviews!
senior thesis - this was another thing that wasn’t in my app itself, because at the time it hadn’t been written lmao. it was something i was able to talk about at interviews, but it being ~still in progress~ did complicate it
on-campus jobs
peer tutor - got recommended by a professor my first year for a different tutoring program, but my schedule was a mess so i ended up as a one-on-one peer tutor! i really enjoyed it, but i had to drop it with how busy i got junior year, so i only did it for two years (freshman spring --> junior fall). total # of hours - 210 hrs
laboratory course TA, cell biology - again, got asked by a professor to do this. specifically TA’d 2/3 sections junior fall, and then 1/2 or 1/3 sections every semester after that. also held office hours, maintained longitudinal lab experiments, and supervised students performing experiments. total # of hours - 800 hrs (TAing this class was absurd and i did it for four semesters)
extracurriculars
collegiate choir member - i adore singing, and part of the reason i went to the college i did was so i could still partake in music while pursuing a science degree. i was a part of my school’s auditioned choir for all four years at my school, and it involved 1h15m practices 4 days a week, regular concerts, and an annual spring tour. total # of hours - 500 hrs
chorus manager - i was a manager of the chorus as well for three years (sophomore through senior). i was very much in charge of the organization - making sure everyone had uniforms, that those uniforms were on for concerts and that everyone was wearing shoes. shepherding people on trips, solving problems, taking attendance, etc. etc. total # of hours - 250 hrs
i also took voice lessons, though i don’t think i put that down on my app? iirc there’s a limit to how many activities you can add?
other
honor societies
Phi Beta Kappa - general undergrad honor society, inducted junior year
Mu Alpha Theta - mathematics honor society, inducted sophomore year
Beta Beta Beta - biology honor society, inducted sophomore (?) year
awards
Barry Goldman scholarship - honorable mention
Dean’s List - all 8 semesters
various prizes specific to my undergrad
academic merit scholarship, minor voice scholarship
------------
to sum it all up....
i think the pros of my application include a strong academic presence, proof of my interest in research, and the existence of significant interests outside the STEM pathway - namely, music!
i think the major con of my application was a really weak clinical experience section, tbh. i also feel like some schools on the other side of the country from my undergrad like. hadn’t heard of it lmaooo.
everyone’s application will be different!! and that’s good, and okay, and you’ll be fine. you want to think about the things that make you you, and potentially the things that reflect on the kind of doctor that you’d like to be.
#medical school#med school#med school advice#medblr#freckled talks#studyblr#academics unite#academicsunite#medical school applications#whooooop this took me like an hour to write up. what a thrilling tour of my college resume lmao

Candid thoughts on MD/PhD programs
I apologize in advance if this is not the right place to ask this question. I am an undergrad in the US applying for medical school next year. The question of MD vs MD/PhD has been on my mind, and I would like some input, especially from those that have gone through it.
From what I've read, the future of MD/PhD's doesn't seem great, from increasingly long training time to low NIH success rates. To top it off, I read that the 80% research - 20% clinic balance that MSTP program directors pitch, only 17% of MD/PhD candidates ever manage to achieve.
Best case scenario: I get my MD/PhD in 7 years, 3-7 years of residency, 0-3 years fellowship, and by then I might need a postdoc to catchup with my research field. Then I compete for an assistant professor job, get my first R01 grant age ~45, see patients maybe 1 day a week... and (from what I've heard) if one's research really picks up steam, then it because advisable to drop patient care all together.
I'm intrigued by a career where I balance patient care with research and maybe spinning-off a biotech company, as some others I look up to have done. However, as things are right now, I just don't see a way. Perhaps I already have my answer that MSTP is not for me but am I wrong about anything I've said, and if not me, who are MD/PhDs meant for?
Very much appreciate your inputs.

Hello, Do you have any tips for an MD/PHD interview? I'm surprised I was invited for an interview (average stats, no pubs etc) but I'm really excited about the opportunity and want it to go well. What are some things I should look for/ask? It's not MSTP, but funded. There are only a couple labs I *might* be interested in (just by browsing the research). I'm also not really sure if I want to do biochem/cancer bio (current research) or biotech (I major in CS/biochem). Thank you
Oh man. I’m probably not the best person to ask because I did my training separately. For that, I’d recommend giving @mudphudkangaroo a shout. What I do recommend if that you really think about what kinda research you want to pursue. Not specifics, but having a general idea is important. I recommend having at least 4-5 potential mentors in mind. Never pin your hopes on a single PI because, quite frankly, academics is an increasingly mobile game and PIs jump ship all the time.
While it’s important to get a project you enjoy (or can tolerate for several years), the most important aspect is getting a good mentor. This can and will make or break your research career. You want someone who has successfully mentored students in the past. Being someone’s first student can go a number of different ways, and not always positively. You want a PI who has a good publication record. Does the PI regularly send their students to conferences? Does the PI have funding? These might be sensitive questions, especially concerning funding, but they are legit and important questions to have answered before committing.
Also keep in mind that an MD/PhD is not the only path to academic research. If you decide that's too big of a commitment, consider a research year. While a PhD will give you a ton of experience in research, it's not the only path to academic research. Plenty of people get involved with research with "only" a MD.

i am sorry for this but... frat au where sid is still g's adorably orderly and nerdy boyfriend, but in this instance, he's doing undergrad before hopefully heading off to med school (to become a neurosurgeon), and geno -- and all of the rhos by association -- start worrying that sid's a lot more stressed than he's letting on. g knows that sidney had been fretting over the financial aid situation for med school, nobody's ever seen sid so tired so often, and when he does leave his job, or (1/5)
his dorm, or the library -- or wherever he goes -- by the time he showers, makes it to the house, and walks through the door, he can barely get three words out before he's passed out on on top of all of g's sheets. so, to cheer him up a little, everybody chips in for a cheesecake from a pretty good dessert place downtown, and the pledges are put in charge of following sid and telling everyone else where to show up, only, plot twist, sid's going into the back entrance of a strip club and (2/5)
holy shit the pledges were not prepared for this, so they call phil, who texts horny, who tells tanger, who's with flower, and they get g and it winds up so basically all of rho is crammed into one tiny corner of the strip club waiting for sid, who's Ready For Death, but admits that he's been worried over finances and the hours for his old job conflicted with classes, plus the tips he makes are honestly ridiculous. g's fighting off his Possessive Urges so he can just be as supportive as (3/5)
possible, and then conor speaks up to tell sid that, even though he never did rush with rho, sidney is undeniably family to them. sid spent 5 hours teaching the current sophomores how to to actually do laundry last year. almost everyone in the frat owes a good midterm/final grade to his color-coded "4 week cram-plan". he made split pea soup and kind of lopsided plum-filled finnish christmas cookies for olli when bad weather kept him from being able to go home for break. so, if sid thinks (4/5)
they aren't gonna help him search for grants and scholarships and apply for the mstp and help him however they can, well he's got another thing coming. the frat helps sid find ways to pay for med school, sid continues to act like glue holding everyone together ( ... he's been asked for advice on how to give lapdances recently which is... new... ) and, he's still geno's sidney, nothing changed -- his flexibility just makes a lot more sense now. (5/5)+random extra? ovi shows up at the club one night because he bought a ring for nicky and he's gonna propose but needs reassurance that it looks good enough. when sid sees him, for some reason, he frantically starts shoving him away from the main lounge area, and alex is like, "very sorry for bothering you at work. not here to look at you or anyone else -- only person i want look at ever is nicky, so i was hoping you-" but he stops because what his peripheral vision just picked up on, and (6/5)
what he's now completely staring at is nicky upside down doing some kind of split thing on a pole while in a pair of black briefs. he makes a noise like he's been shot. sidney is just like, "you know how i started this because i want to be a neurosurgeon and needed money for med school?" ovi nods. "and you know how nicky wants to be a trauma surgeon?" ovi nods again, understandingly. he and nicky talk about it later, when he can, ovi shows up to give nicky flowers at the ends of his sets, (7/5)and the two of them get engaged (he proposes by talking it over with nicky's family and surprising him in sweden that summer) and live happily ever after. (8/5)-
im...IM....NEED 10K OF THIS

I'm so worried, my future plans include an MSTP program, and with the NIH cuts I'm afraid they'll get rid of the program. I know you're not, like, all-knowing about NIH policies, but from your perspective is this kind of cut likely? 😓
oh gosh i’m not sure. it all depends if congress passes the budget. realistically congress may change some aspects, so even if NIH’s budget gets cut, maybe it won’t be that steep, and maybe it won’t happen for a while, and programs such as yours can still be saved. but the downside is that even if the budget doesn’t end up being cut, this kind of news can cause panic, and some programs may tighten their belts preemptively to brace themselves. you could try contacting the program coordinator and ask for their opinion? like if it’s a program that was already on the brink of being dropped even before the news of the budget cuts, it may suffer the biggest blow if that becomes reality.
but regardless, it’s not a bad idea to entertain Plan B’s--for all of us working with NIH funds :\
i wish i had something more optimistic to say but the most ridiculous things keep happening with the trump admin so :(
if anyone has anything else to add, please do!

Hmmm tricky. The humanities subjects you mentioned are STEM adjacent, so some STEM MD/PhD programs may count your research interests as part of their STEM focused MD PhD programs. You can reach out to MD PhD program directors and ask about their interest in having a more social science PhD. University of Chicago was quite proud to disclose of its Econ PhD in their MSTP when I interviewed there. Northwestern doesnt want to admit it, but I'm pretty sure they graduated an Econ PhD from its MSTP too. I remember coming across a few humanities MD/PhD programs out there, but I don't recall which schools off the top of my head (sorry).
As for the process, some basic questions that apply to a STEM MD/PhD program would apply to a humanities MD/PhD program. I would consider asking about:
How is the curriculum structured? Do you start with the MD class, then do your PhD, and return back to the MD? Does the program follow the 2-PhD-2/1-PhD-3 system? Or something else?
Are there curriculum in place to help maintain your clinical knowledge during your PhD years if the PhD program occurs between years of medical education?
What kind of networking/career advise are available through the program?
What kind of advising/mentorship does the program provide?
How does the funding work? Is it a full scholarship? Partial scholarship? Is there stipend? Who financially supports you during the PhD years?
What's the average and range of time to degree?
What kind of specialty MD/PhD career training are available?
Lastly, something to watch out much later on if you interview at these programs is how happy the students are.
hope that's helpful. Good luck!
Hi. I am interested in pursuing an MD/PhD program in the humanities (anthrop.,sociology). I have reached out to my pre-med. advisor and she has pretty limited knowledge about it. Any ideas how I could find out more about the process? There isn’t much online. And I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to reach out to medical school admissions to talk about it... thoughts?
I think it’s appropriate to ask a med school admissions department about their program. It shows you want to be well informed. With more specialized programs like that it is going to be hard to find specific advice, so reaching out to the program itself is probably the best option. Ask about their curriculum and their process. Let them know you’re a ways off from applying but want to know how it works.

Everyday Ten Ask CCIE R&S VRRP best ccie lab dumps
1. Question: Set up two core devices of VRRP. The spanning tree elects itself as root.
Answer: In the MSTP network, the vlan associated with the spanning tree instance of the entire network must be consistent. Otherwise, the root election will be confused.
2. Question: Does Cisco's switch support Load balancing?
Answer: Support.
3. Question: How does VRRP achieve load balancing?
Answer: There are two ways:
(1) Configure the gateway IP address of the terminal to configure the gateway IP of the active and standby devices respectively. The terminal determines whether the traffic is forwarded by the primary device or forwarded by the standby device.
(2) With VRRP plus, hosts on the LAN use a unified gateway IP but when different hosts request gateway ARP, VRRP plus responds to different virtual MACs . Thereby distributing traffic from different hosts to VRRP. Load balancing is achieved on different members of Plus.
4. Question: Can the physical address participate in the communication after the switch has done VRRP?
Answer: Yes, VRRP only does the gateway address redundancy and does not change the original physical network structure. The physical address and the actual link. Used in normal use.
5. Question: Which port types can the VRRP track monitor?
Answer: The monitored interface is only allowed to be a logical interface of Layer 3 routing. For example: routed port, SVI, loopback, tunnel
6. Question: What is the default interval for BPDU messages in RSTP mode?
Answer: 2 seconds
7. Question: How is static routing load balanced?
Answer: If multiple static routes are configured on the device at the same time, the destination address mask is the same. Then, the packets are sent from the device. The load balancing is the same as that of the aggregation port. The adjustment method is the same.
8. Question: Does the switch support dial-up access?
Answer: The switch does not support ppoe dialing that only routing devices support it.
9. Question: Between ospf and rip, the default route redistribution will not take effect. For example, the default route of OE1 wants to be redistributed into rip. This is not possible.
Answer: Solution:
On the rip, the default route is delivered:
Cisco(config)#router rip
Cisco(config-router)#default-information originate Always
10. Question: Why is there no error after configuring the static route but the show run is not displayed and the show ip route can not see the route?
Answer: Check if the device is configured with no ip routing

ccie security lab asa Everyday Ten Ask
1. Question: What is the SSH login username?
Answer: When configuring SSH, if the local database is not called, then the user name can be arbitrary when ssh logs in, the password is Cisco
Router #line vty 0 4
Router (config-line) #transport input ssh
Router #password Cisco
2. Question: Is there the difference between a remote login with a user name and no user name?
Answer: (1) No username:
a. enable password b.line vty under password c.line vty call login
2 With user name
a. enable password b.line vty call local login c. global username and password
3. Question: After the software version is lost, the underlying crtl upgrade software version, which port is the network cable?
Answer: The network cable needs to be connected to the first port of the switch, but if the device has an MGMT interface, the network cable needs to be connected to the MGMT interface to upload the package properly.
4. Question: How does vrrp achieve vrrp master switching when the main upper-link line hangs up?
Answer: Set track probe on the upper junction of the main device, reduce the primary priority when the line is broken to achieve master switching, as follows:
Cisco (config) #int vlan 1
Cisco (config-if-VLAN 1) #vrrp 1 track G0/22 50 // Reduce its priority by 50 when the upper interface G0/22 is broken
5. Question: Will vrrp's virtual gateway mac change?
Answer: There will be no change in the same VRRP group, 00-00-5e-00-01-XX to indicate that the two-digit ten of the following XX is represented by the 16-bit corresponding to the group number of the VRRP group.
6. Question: What is the priority of VRRP by default?
Answer: The default priority for the VRRP group is 100 and the higher the priority, the higher the priority.
7.Question: In a VRRP+MSTP environment, will the standby machine immediately preempt master in the case of a low-priority (standby machine) vlan configuration vrrp [vid] preempt delay 180 host reboot?
Answer: No, low-priority vlanbackup is in the state and when the host restarts, the standby machine waits for 180s to preempt the master.
8. Question: How many times does the track retry default under VRRP?
Answer: Default 3 times
9. Question: Wh configure port isolation on the switch and find that some ports are not working?
Answer: Port isolation is only local which means that the switch is active and the cross-device is not effective. At the same time, if the port chip of the same device is not the same is not effective.
10. Question: Can port protection be configured after pvlan is configured on the switch?
Answer: Can be configured so that different groups vlan can be configured between floors for isolation and then port configuration port protection enables isolation of each port.
