Here’s some raw footage of yours truly working on a guitar track- in collaboration with my ig guitar buddy, awesome harmonica player @dannygarrettharmonica ...the tune will remain unnamed as of now- though you are welcome to guess what it is! It’s a very old folk tune, covered by tons of artists- in all genres. In this clip I’m playing in CGDGBD capoed up a half step- but after doing a bunch of takes last night I’ve decided to retune to open C#. The mule is a finicky and stubborn beast, and you can hear...he did NOT like being in this tuning. Oh well- I got some good ideas from this. I missed the exact date, but a little over a year ago I started posting my slide playing. The idea was to actively challenge the part of me that was so perfectionistic...that it was crippling. So the idea is, “I’ll just post stuff I’m working on- warts and all”. Since then I’ve actually made “pen pals” with different people around the world who dig this kind of thing. I’m still critical of social media, and in my opinion-if one isn’t careful-it’s use can lead to increased anxiety and mental health problems. It is a FACT that these platforms are designed to be psychologically addictive. But- if one is very clear with oneself about personal motivation, I think you can connect with folks who have similar interests, and transcend geographical distance or social boundaries. I think that’s awesome. I have “pen pals” who don’t live near me- in different states or countries. It’s great! I learn about new music, and I also get to find out what’s going on in their corner of the world. This is the bridge section of a tune I started writing when I first got my @muleresonatorguitars resonator. It’s basically an “etude” for slide guitar, which I composed to push myself into playing new techniques; work on intonation, play behind the slide, etc. Someday I’d like to be able to play it correctly, record it, and create some tutorials- so other people can learn from it and push their own playing. It’s called “Tune For A Bell”. Guitar lesson time! Here’s a real quick open string scale concept in open D (actually open F...cuz I’m capoed at the 3rd fret 😏). I had to break this up into 2 videos. I posted a little thing I came up with the other evening, and folks seemed to enjoy it- so I thought I’d break it down and give it to the universe. This version is different though...I’m using a “D6” tuning, which is kinda blowing my mind. Since I decided to get more into slide, I’ve stayed away from too many tunings, because it starts getting really confusing to me. But this one, this moment...bam! It’s talking to me. Tonight I just feel like sharing some music with the world. I picked up my resonator after what seems like forever. Here’s a groove that popped out, trying to utilize behind the slide fretting to get some minor chords. Reminds me of my buddy in the uk @richslideguitar ...It ain’t perfect but if you want an idea; here it is. Sometimes music is the only thing that makes sense to me. All the friends I have made across cultures and the world I owe to music. If you are somewhere out there feeling low, pick up your instrument or paintbrush or screwdriver or whatever, and know that you can create something for a moment in time that can bring more harmony to the world. It might be fleeting, it might be idealistic, but it’s something that we all can feel. Then after we feel that, maybe we can see how others feel it too, and just be a little more aligned in some way.
