OK NOW YOUR TURN
pls pls ramble abt any niche interest you have
HELLO THANK YOU
*invokes inner history nerd* so. listen here colonizer and listen good. i will subject you to my random knowledge cuz due to youtube, undiagnosed neurodivergency and most importantly- bad jokes. i have a vari-tea of niche interests but the first thing that came to my mind was my knowledge of the history of how Indians became one of The Top Consumers of Tea.
how did this wonder-drug make its way into our masala covered hearts? what led to the fact that everyday at 4pm the word at the tip of most indians' tongues is "chai"?this is my thesis as a pro desi tea obsessed freak.
This story, like most in our history, starts with the arrival of the British. i would like to insert this picture i found in a video that i laughed at for a solid five minutes:
Tumblr media
anyway
technically tea was invented in china, and for a very long time it was exclusively grown there. it was a very high class commodi-tea. it was considered so precious that in 1662 when king charles the second married the Portuguese princess catherine of braganza: her dowry was a chest of tea and THE ENTIRE ISLAND OF MUMBAI (then, bombay) for an annual lease of 10 pounds. let me make that clearer. THE PLACE WHERE A 1BHK HOUSE IS SO EXPENSIVE MOST PPL CANT AFFORD WAS EQUIVALENT TO THIS:
Tumblr media
needless to say the brits was so freaking addicted man. they wanted this. so bad.
By the 18th centuary there was a war between the english and the dutch and the brit resources were down the toilet so they couldnt afford to spend all that silver on the trade of tea leaves with china. and china was uninterested in anything the white boys were offering.
UNTIL they discovered something china wanted.
✨Drugs✨
the white boys wanted that tea. and they would do anything. so they started growing opium in india (by that time they had colonized us bruh. they came into our backyard and were like "bro we're such good friends pretty please let me use ur backyard" "ok what do you want to do w it?" "i wanna grow drugs bro" "....ok" "you'll work for me no bro?" "why would i do that" "bro its ur backyard bro" "what-" *england pulls out slavery* "SHUT UP AND DO IT") (dont come at me lmao this is a very rough simplification of what happened)(imma get blocked for this?)
anyway, brits grew opium and smuggled it to china in return for TEA. FOR TEA. 40.
now after the charter act of 1833 (idk what that is exactly but basically brits lost its trade monopoly with china and so now china said we should see other people and it was an open relationship and britian got very pissed but they signed the act anyway i think)
to deal with this they established the Tea Committee (this isnt the first government board specifically for tea. there were plen-tea of others like the Tea Board Of India) which dealt w the extraction of techniques, tea seads and resources from the chinese. this was highly unsuccessful and china was not impressed. this is an example of british desperation they'll do anything at this point. (took everything in me to not insert pictures of how they treated indian farmers. it was *inhales, lets go of anger for my ancestors treatment* bad)
but in the end this qoute i found (undoubtedly by a white man) "fortune favours the white men" came tru and they got their way.
oh you thought i was done? haha babygurl i am not
in 1843 robert fortune, who was a scottish horticulturist, went on a solo trip to china to study (read as: steal) tea plantations. no actually apparently he did study cuz he published a book(i forgot the name).(yes. HIS NAME WAS ROB. FORTUNE. talk about being born for a job)
lemme insert a quick meme here:
Tumblr media
(they actually hired him on the spot and gave the amazed man 500 pounds per annum and sent him off to china)
he was to perform what we call The Great British Tea Heist the brits had found their vigilan-tea
my guy was committed to his role and shaved his head and pretended to be a monk and after 3 months wrote a letter to his company saying "bro i got the goodssss"
lmao no this it what the letter said- "l have much pleasure in informing you," he wrote, "that I have procured a large supply of seeds and young plants which l trust will get safely to India."
NOW they finally had the greens and started planting it in india. over the years indian tea topped the market in britian as the best tea. mostly cuz the white boyz HYPED it up. they even started doing diss tracks for chinese tea. this is something read right out of an advertisment- "indian teas are more wholesome, purer, cheaper and better than chinese teas in every single way". white boyz started saying stuff like they got out of a toxic realtionship with china and a healthy one with india (but they were the toxic ones)
now brits tried to globalize indian tea to get the moneyyy~ from indians.
their first experiment with (another) government body for tea- Indian Tea Association began on the indian railways. these railways were the ancestor of the IRC-tea-C. basically they started making tea on the railway platforms. this started the trend of tea being the signature experience on every indian train journey, from the first class to economy, everyone was having it (cuz trains were introduced and quickly became popular in use). train tea was said to be better than the quality of tea in 5 star hotels. and this converted us from a nation of tea-totalers to teach addcits.
now i just have one thing to say in the end. HOW did the quality decline so badly my desi brothers and sisters? nowadays the tea on trains is basically water but brown. milk is a lie.
anyway. on the end we got it right. we took tea from the chinese and brits and we added milk and we added sugar and we got:
✨chai✨
you have reached the end. congrats.

This is Balwinder [pronouns are 🇮🇳"वह"(Vah) and 🇬🇧 she/they/he], the Indian National Engine. They're based on a Chittaranjan WAP-1, and they're the fastest and most reliable engine on the New Dheli-Mumbai route. On this long journey, they work with 2 1A carriages (Padmini and Rajesh), 3 2A sleeping cars (Nisha, Kiral and Chandra), a pantry car (Madhur), 3 2S sitting cars (Rathi, Kamal and Ditha) and a brake van (Sunil).
Likes: singing Bollywood songs during the journeys, seeing the first rays of sunrise at the end of every journey, the smell of Madhur's freshly brewn masala chai
Dislikes: when the journey gets delayed by anything, children playing on the tracks (they're deathly afraid of running over them by accident), when the rainy season gets out of hand

1800s 07 August My Dearest Brother,
I have sent yet another bundle of masala chai, you would do well to savor the leaves as my monthly shipments will soon cease. I’ve never considered myself to be in possession of much luck, and I’m aware of the irony of such a statement given the current circumstances that have befallen our family, but ha! I knew a rainy day would soon arrive, and oh how gloomy this year has been. I have just enough saved to purchase a ticket back home. Seeing as Silas has all but ruined our reputation… I suppose it’s best I spare you the distress of bearing this situation alone and say that…well, I intend to be back in Liechtenstein before Silas has the chance to bleed us dry of every krone in his sight.
We are both aware of the trouble our brother’s desires have got him in, and if we desire to have the bastard outested by the end of the year, you will be in need of all the help you can get. And before you choose to scold me - I can nearly see your quill poised over your reply, even from my accommodations here in Mumbai - I evoke the term bastard with all the adoration in the world for my dearest elder brother.
Even if his penchant for parties and whores have all but rendered the last six years of my life abroad useless …
Once you’re instated as Duke Schellenberg, I expect proper compensation for my efforts. My generosity, as you well know, is not given for free. I understand funds will remain short, so perhaps I will accept an alternative form of payment.
Ah, and do you still see the publisher’s nephew on occasion? It is…of supreme importance that you give him the letter I posted from Spain. For a man that claims to have his hands full, he is quite adamant about a mere chapter….do give him the letter, yes? He says it is not potential I have, but a ‘natural genius for capturing the very essence of life in mere words’ – his words, not mine. You know I’m not one to brag. Well, not often, at least. But can you believe it? Your brother, the author. Perhaps I will end up like Rousseau or Austen?
I must return back to bed before the flame burns through the last of the wick. Give my best to Silas and the others, or do not. I don’t particularly care. Yours Truly, MS

matteo's purpose for being in france can be summarized into one simple word: autonomy. being fourth in line for the dukedom meant his ambitions were his alone, not forced upon him in the name of familial duty. matteo dreams of becoming of famous author; this is what led him to spend his early twenties traversing the world in hopes of drawing inspiration for his debut novel.
unfortunately his plans came to a staggering halt when the news of his family's sudden financial misfortune forced him to return home.
but it's not revenge that brought him to france, it's riches. titled misses and misters wander the hallways and frolic in the gardens and it's just so easy. matteo is a master of words, and he intends to use them to his advantage, bewitching his way into the upper echelon. into wealth. with fortune comes the funds to achieve his dream, and he's prepared to swindle and use anyone it takes - even if it means subjugating himself to a loveless marriage.
those with humble origins become pawns; the hands that caress supple skin prompt shaking, pointed fingers of blame. blackmail. the lips that offer declarations of fondness elicit the slightest whisper of a name. a victim. handmaids and stable boys become his closest confidantes, but the ball is forever in his court.
to those who don't know him (which, admittedly, is most considering he's been traveling for years), he appears to be just another rake. easygoing and unserious. he prefers this; it allows him to move through society unbothered. late night rendezvous lead to diamonds and watches sitting heavily in the bottom of his pockets.
matteo craves glory. if he can't secure enough funds to support his past lifestyle, he is sure that all his hard work will be for nothing. writing has always been his outlet, but liechtenstein doesn't offer the same inspiration that the high seas and spice markets do.
and i have some wanted connections in the navigation! message me on discord or tumblr if you'd like to plot something !

Chemistry weds Physics
As the sun set over the vibrant city of Mumbai, Amrita, a diligent chemistry student, was engrossed in a fascinating experiment. A combination of various chemicals and a pinch of curiosity had brought her to her breaking point, desperately searching for the answer that would bridge the gap between chemistry and physics, the elusive link she felt was missing in her studies. Determined, Amrita ventured out of the laboratory to connect with Professor Rajesh, a renowned physicist at the esteemed Indian Institute of Science. Over steaming cups of masala chai, Amrita shared her dilemma with Professor Rajesh, yearning for his wisdom. With a twinkle in his eyes, the professor embarked on a perplexing tale, revealing that the missing connection could be found in the mystical lands of the Thar Desert. Inspired by his words, Amrita embarked on a journey, traversing the vast desert and ancient temples, until she reached a hidden village of skilled artisans. In awe, she witnessed their mastery in sand sculpting, spinning delicate particles into intricate patterns. With newfound clarity, Amrita realized that the bridge between chemistry and physics lay in the delicate dance between particles, just as the sand artist's creation intertwined with the invisible forces of gravity. Returning to Mumbai, Amrita approached her chemistry experiments with a deepened understanding. With each swirling flask and bubbling concoction, she found solace knowing that the elegance and precision of physics was always present, weaving its intangible magic through the intricate realm of molecules and matter. From that day forth, Amrita became a true alchemist, seamlessly blending chemistry and physics, honoring the ancient knowledge she had acquired in her Indian heritage.

Day 1
We slept well after our 20 hour flights from around the world (Boston, New York, Istanbul, Tokyo). Most of us awoke to an excellent breakfast at Hotel Sea Princess at Juhu Beach in Mumbai! There were so many options and I loved the masala chai and the butter fish.
Tumblr media
After breakfast we sorted out our rooms and had orientation. Duane and Sagar told us about the companies we were going to visit like Diageo, Sony, and Tata Renewables. We also enjoyed chai with biscuits and Chariot India gifted us personalized duffel bags.
Tumblr media
We embarked on a scavenger hunt throughout the surrounding neighborhood. My group did yoga by the beach and Scott got henna done at another. We raced back and crafted presentation to showcase our findings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of us went to the gym while others rested or got a head start on our first case study. We met in the lobby and walked to our welcome dinner at Copper Chimney. We learned how to eat with naan and enjoyed countless dishes like paneer, tikka masala, garlic naan, and ras malai. It was a terrific ending to our first day.

Heard you like coffee and tea, so what are your OCs' favorite Hot Beverages? (In-universe or modern, your call.)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH anne you're spoiling me with all these oc questions ;~;
evadne: tea connoisseur; she's partial to white teas! white darjeeling or bai mu dan. baihao yinzhen for especially stressful days.
kal: kal's ancestors would come back from the dead to kick her ass collectively if she wasn't a tea drinker. but this is good because she DOES like tea, so they can rest in peace. she tends to stick to black teas which are more familiar to her, and she drinks hers with milk, sugar is optional. i specifically think of masala chai when it comes to kal, which is probably not a tea she makes often but a kind of indulgent, reminiscent tea; the recipe was passed down to her from her mother.
aedan: he is from expy england so he drinks tea but there's no sugar, and it's barely steeped because he throws the bag out within 3 minutes. he could not tell the difference between an earl grey and an english breakfast if you had a gun to his head. he drinks pg tips
faris: he's a hot chocolate kind of baby, to me. i think he discovers the white hot chocolate from costa and forgets about the blight entirely.
damon: requires 3 coffees a day to function as a human/be as seemingly cheerful as he is. he drinks his black, and switches to espresso when they move to the amell estate and he can afford to. drinks the bad shit at first, but he'd splurge on arabica beans the moment he can. (this is 100% why anders wants to move in btw and its so valid of him)
mal: she isn't a coffee or tea drinker, but i think she'd chug a cup of coffee every now and again, especially when she's on watch, for the caffeine.
marya: not really a big coffee or tea drinker, but when she does drink tea, it's with her clan. doodh chai, absolutely!!!! halla milk for their chai... ahhhhhhh!!!
isra: being inquisitor is hard work. she drinks coffee - she'll take it any way, black, cream, sugar, whatever. most commonly seen tipping whiskey into her coffee. i think she'd love an irish coffee tbh.
joan: coffee drinker! black but she dumps a lot of sugar into it.
moon: kopitiam, of course!!!! an essential in the morning with kaya toast and half-boiled eggs.
alexis: columbian coffee, with cream, but no sugar.
mahanon: mumbai cutting chai or elaichi chai!!!! also using halla milk ofc <3

Chai (Tea) is like religion for many people in India. The day does not start until you have a warm cup of kadak Chai (strong tea). If you have any visitors or guests coming to your house, it would almost be considered rude if you don't ask for a cup of chai. All the fun conversations are surrounded around chai! You will find street vendors everywhere simmering a large pot of tea. You will hear the popular term in Mumbai "cutting chai", which just means half a cup of tea. You might find it interesting that people have chai multiple times in a day, however the quantity they drink is very less, just a few sips. I am a complete chai person, and need my morning and afternoon cup of tea. My favorite is Masala Chai with a blend of whole spices and lots of ginger. It is a perfect way to kickstart the day right. Masala means a blend of spices. and the tea brewed along with spices is called Masala Chai. You can make Masala Chai with freshly crushing the whole spices when making tea or using a Chai Masala Powde

Spice Up Your Day: Indian Tiffin Treasures:
Tumblr media
In the vibrant tapestry of Indian cuisine, the tiffin holds a special place. Beyond just a meal, it's a cultural institution, a daily ritual that brings families together and offers a tantalizing array of flavors and textures. Join me on a culinary journey as we delve into the rich world of Indian tiffin treasures, where every bite is a burst of spices and every meal a celebration. And for those in Sydney seeking to experience the authentic taste of Indian tiffin, look no further than the Indian Tiffin Service Sydney.
The Essence of Indian Tiffin:
Indian tiffin, often referred to as "dabba" or "dabba-walla" culture, is a tradition deeply rooted in Indian households. It's more than just packing a lunch; it's an art form passed down through generations. The tiffin typically consists of a variety of dishes, each carefully prepared to ensure a balanced and nutritious meal. From aromatic curries to savory snacks, the tiffin offers a symphony of flavors that cater to every palate.
A Gastronomic Adventure:
One of the most exciting aspects of Indian tiffin is its sheer diversity. Depending on the region, the tiffin can vary greatly in its composition and flavors. In the bustling streets of Mumbai, you might find vada pav or pav bhaji packed into tiffins, while in the southern state of Kerala, it could be an assortment of rice dishes like lemon rice or tamarind rice. Every corner of India offers its own unique twist on the tiffin, making it a culinary adventure waiting to be explored.
The Spice of Life:
At the heart of Indian cuisine lies its rich tapestry of spices. From cumin and coriander to turmeric and cardamom, each spice brings its own depth and complexity to the dish. In Indian tiffin, spices are not just ingredients; they're storytellers, weaving tales of tradition and heritage with every sprinkle and pinch. Whether it's the fiery heat of a masala curry or the subtle warmth of a chai-spiced dessert, spices are the soul of Indian tiffin treasures.
Modern Twists on Classic Recipes:
While traditional recipes form the backbone of Indian tiffin, modern twists and innovations have also found their way into the lunchbox. With changing lifestyles and dietary preferences, there's been a growing demand for healthier and more convenient options. As a result, traditional dishes are being reinvented with a contemporary twist, incorporating ingredients like quinoa, tofu, and avocado while still staying true to their Indian roots.
Conclusion:
Indian tiffin is more than just a meal; it's a celebration of flavors, a testament to tradition, and a journey through India's culinary landscape. From the streets of Delhi to the shores of Goa, the tiffin tells the story of a nation united by its love for good food. So, the next time you're looking to spice up your day, why not indulge in the treasure trove of flavors that Indian tiffin has to offer? Trust me; your taste buds will thank you for it. And for those in Sydney seeking to experience this culinary delight without leaving the comfort of their homes, the Tiffin service in Sydney brings the authentic taste of Indian tiffin right to your doorstep.
