People die all the time. Life is more fragile than we think. Therefore, you should treat others in such a way that there is no regret. Fairly and if possible sincerely. It's much easier not to try, then cry and wring your hands after the person dies.

To go back to Murakami after what seems like ages (it has been- last year somehow I missed reading any of his books 🫣) is to go back to life. 24 short stories, what our writer calls sprints, written in between his novels, (you guessed it right-marathons) are perfect for anyone who wants to sample his style. On offer are- crows that know the difference between cakes, a one-legged surfer, a couple who take off to Greece on a whim, unexplained disappearances and cats, of course they are Mhrakami's mysterious cats. This was my fifth by him and the one that left me most disappointed. Apart from 3-4 stories, the rest were less nuanced than what I had expected. Short stories lack the room to flesh out their characters, mostly, & someone who prefers character-driven tales vis a vis plot-driven narratives, the commitment they demand and offer is inadequate. Also, I felt at sea with some stories- neither I could understand their meaning nor the metaphor behind them, if any. But. Great if you want bite-sized Murakami morsels. Also great if time is at a premium (when isn't it?). My favourite - If you liked this read: For #magicrealism: •Kafka On The Shore- predictably the better Murakami to start with. •The Invisible Life Of Addie Larue •The Night Circus •The Master & The Margarita • Beloved •Midnight's Children For #Japaneseliterature: •When the Emperor Was Divine •Never Let Me Go •Before The Coffee Gets Cold •The Easy Life In Kamusari #shortstoriescollection #harukimurakami #blindwillowsleepingwoman #japanesefiction #contemporarybooks #fantasyfiction #asianliterature #delhireader #delhibookstagrammer #delhibookstafam #2023readingchallenge #januaryreads #murakamiharuki #murakamibooks #bookaesthetic #indianreaders #indianbookstagram #bookstagramindia #kindleflatlay #booksandtea #winterreads #mybookfeatures #readerslife #alwaysreading #bookdragon #bookishthoughts #alwayswithabook #readingchallenge2023 (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoEWLOirrKz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The world is like the children sitting in the class wrapped up in their little bubble and Murakami is the teacher standing on the desk yelling at them that there’s another perspective, just like Mr. Keating from Dead Poet Society.

ⒷⓄⓄⓀ ⓇⒺⓋⒾⒺⓌ Birthday Girl Author: Haruki Murakami Genre: short story, Fiction My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Of course I’d like to be prettier or smarter or rich. But I really can’t imagine what would happen to me if any of those things came true. They might be more than I could handle. I still don’t really know what life is all about. I don’t know how it works" Birthday Girl by Haruki Murakami is a pocket book of 44 pages published to celebrate Murakami's 70th Birthday. As usual, there are big, hidden messages inside the small sentences of the book. Murakami has left us hanging for more when this short story ends. This story is about a girl on her 20th birthday, at her workplace as none of the things she wished for that day came true. She was asked to bring dinner for her manager, who, was a weird person nobody had met before. This manager asked her for a birthday wish, and the girl asked for something which was not revealed in the story. The manager said, 'your wish is granted'. Everyone at this point is curious to know what was the wish and if that truly came true. Let me know after you read the book, what you think the girl wished for. Personally, I think she wished to have no more wish in her life. But I am open to hear your perspectives as well. This is a good relaxing read, and definitely a feel good one. It again reminded me how privileged I am in my life so far, and how having no wish can actually mean all my wishes had already come true! #murakamiwisdom #murakamibooks #harukimurakami #birthdaygirl #bookreviewersofinstagram #fromindia #indianbookworm #followforfollowback #followersinstagram #followme (at India bengal) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQfr2hpH2DF/?utm_medium=tumblr

⭐⭐⭐⭐ #bookstagram #instabook #iread #ireadbook #leoycomparto #bookworm #librosleidos #murakamibooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Bng6--cA0-x/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=e6c5eholihvs

''Once I began a book, I couldn’t put it down. It was like an addiction; I read while I ate, on the train, in bed until late at night, in school, where I’d keep the book hidden so I could read during class. Before long I bought a small stereo and spent my time holed up in my room, listening to jazz records. But I had almost no desire to talk with anyone about the experience I gained through books and music. I felt happy just being me and no one else.'' ― Haruki Murakami - South of the Border, West of the Sun

“The answer is dreams. Dreaming on and on. Entering the world of dreams and never coming out. Living in dreams for the rest of time.”  ― Haruki Murakami, Sputnik Sweetheart
