"Gang Clearing Snow From Roads,” Montreal Star. November 3, 1932. Page 11. ---- 2000 Men at Work on Highways in Quebec Area ---- QUEBEC, Nov. 3— (Star Special) -Two thousand men were at work yesterday as wall as numerous tractors, and as a result of their efforts the Murray Bay road was reopened last night, as well as several other highways which were affected by Tuesday's snowstorm.
The Murray Bay road, providing an opening to Chicoutimi, was reported open last night while the 40 mile stretch on the Perron Boulevard, between Ste. Agathe and Val Brillant in the Matapedia Valley, will probably be opened during the course of today.
Twelve inches of snow in the Laurentides National Park, falling on top of snow that occurred during the last three weeks, has closed this road to traffic of all kinds and fears were expressed by J. L. Boulanger, deputy Minister of Highways, last night that the road would remain closed.
The north shore of the St Lawrence seems to have been hardest hit by the storm, for it was reported last night that all South Shore roads were open.

Ben 10: Biomatrix
Tumblr media
(Warning: this is a little long)
Ben Tennyson was 16 when he found a broken Omnitrix in the woods while on a camping trip with some teammates, celebrating their victory in the last game of the season. As he tried to get it off, Ben accidentally activates the device and transformed into an amalgam of himself and a Pyronite. After some mishaps, and a fight with a giant robot looking for the watch, Ben decided to use it to help if/when the opportunity came.
Gwen Tennyson was invited to go camping by Ben as a way to help get her mind off of college exams; though the two weren't close, Gwen took up the offer, reminded of their road trip with Grandpa Max. At the camp site, Gwen was the one to spot the impending forest fire from Ben's transformation, and was the first one to rush to help, discovering Ben, and giving him the idea to create a backfire to stop the original.
JT Mackleroy used to bully Ben after befriending Cash Murray, but changed his tune when Cash voiced his unconcern for anyone caught in the forest fire, let alone Ben or Gwen. Following Gwen to help, JT brought a pair of fire extinguishers to try and douse the fire before it got out of hand, but it was too big by the time he arrived, so just kept the flames at Bay while Ben and Gwen tried coming up with a plan. afterwards, JT apologized for bullying Ben and even wanted to try and be friends again.
After that camping trip, Ben, Gwen, and JT team up when something would happen in or around town: Ben is the muscle, using any one of ten transformations in the newly dubbed Biomatrix; Gwen is the informant, using her research abilities to find any bit of information no matter how minute; and JT is the equipment guy, his time as the Soccer teams equipment manager giving him an insight into any and all items that may come in handy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because the Biomatrix is damaged, it doesn't fully transform Ben, but the effect on each alien varies, along with how complete each transformation is.
Hot Shot: Ben's first alien, and arguably the most complete due to how little of "Ben" is left once the transformation is "done", being a few inches taller than Ben, but is still primarily, physically a Pyronite. Abilities include limited Pyrokinesis and heat resistance and detection.
Wildmutt: The transformation is more of a 60/40 split, making Ben look like a Vulpimancer werewolf, and because of this, can talk, though not well, utilizing short simple sentences only when he needs to. Abilities include echolocation, enhanced sense of smell, enhanced strength and flexibility.
Diamondhead: Petrosapien crystals form pieces of armor around Ben rather than actually becoming Ben but aren't as tough as normal Petrosapien crystal. Abilities include crystal generation, enhanced durability, and weapon formation originating from the crystal gauntlets.
XLR8: Due to some of the more important biological features of Kinecelerens are missing from the transformation, XLR8's top speed is a fraction of what a normal Kineceleren can move, but is still incredibly quick, topping out around 200 miles an hour. Abilities include enhanced speed and perception, and limited enhanced durability.
Cerebrum: Even with the partial transformation, Cerebrum is still the smartest alien in Ben's arsenal, but isn't as smart or as small as other Galvans, surpassing the average but is nowhere near the top, and stands at an even two feet tall. Abilities include enhanced intellect and mechanical knowhow.
Tetraman: For some reason, because of the incomplete transformation, the Biomatrix improperly scales the power of a Tetramand to Ben, giving Tetraman more power than natural Tetramands have, while being much smaller in size and stature, standing just under eight feet tall compared to the natural 10-12 feet. Abilities include enhanced strength, stamina, durability, dexterity, and sight.
Flyboy: An odd combination, Flyboy would remind you of some horror character fusion of man and insect, which makes Flyboy one of four transformations useful for interrogations. Abilities include flight, enhanced sight, goo generation from eyes, tail doubles as blade.
Angler: Due to the transformation being incomplete, Angler can stay out of water longer than regular Piscciss Volann's, but not by much, so Ben tries not to use him too much on land but keeps extra water on hand just in case. Abilities include enhanced swimming, strength, and durability, underwater breathing, jaw can unhinge for powerful bites.
Upgrade: The Galvanic Mechamorph primarily takes the shape of Ben, and leaves most of Bens clothes untouched compared to the other transformations, but because of the incomplete transformation, Upgrade can't fully merge with technology, leaving the primary body exposed while the "arms" are engaged. Abilities include technokinesis, "eye" laser, limited plasticity, enhanced durability.
Specter: Something about the transformation keeps Ben from using it too much, describing it as being like someone is always behind him, trying to tell him something; Ben really doesn't like using it, even if the situation calls for it. Abilities include phasing, possession, and flight.
If anyone has any questions or transformations they want to see, feel free to send me some asks, my inbox is open.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Scott McKenzie, the singer-songwriter best known for his association with John Phillips and the 1967 Summer of Love anthem “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair),” the sonic tract that called 1000s of young people to California.
Phillips (who played on the track with The Wrecking Crew) wrote the song to appease authorities concerned that hippies would overrun the Bay Area for the Monterey Pop Festival. Peace and love prevailed. The song has been used in several films and was a theme for the Prague Spring Czech uprising in 1968. That same year, McKenzie’s next Top 40 hit “Like an Old Time Movie” (also written and played by Phillips) segued with McKenzie writing “What About Me” for Anne Murray (her first hit single).
Like many artists circa 1960, McKenzie morphed out of doo-wop and became a folkie, joining the New York folk scene that beget The Mamas & The Papas. Phillips initially invited McKenzie to join that group but he declined, saying he didn’t want “the pressure.” Years later McKenzie joined a road version of The Mamas & The Papas in 1986. Concurrently, the Phillips-McKenzie team joined Mike Love and Terry Melcher to create the huge Beach Boys hit “Kokomo.”
The evergreen “San Francisco” remains McKenzie’s best-known work (he passed from Guillain-Barre syndrome in 2010). Periodically I dabbled with the song, dirty demo-ing a grunge-y Iggy Pop-like update: https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/san-francisco-be-sure-to-wear-flowers-in-your-hair-demo-remastered-2020

Legendary Singer-Songwriter Jimmy Rankin Shares Joel Plaskett Produced Single “Harvest Highway”
Tumblr media
On Harvest Highway (Out Oct. 13), Jimmy Rankin hits the road again, time traveling and traversing far-flung destinations—along with his native Nova Scotia—through his singular brand of East Coast folk-rock. He nods to Nova Scotia’s Highway 101—running through the fertile Annapolis Valley and down the southern shore of the Bay of Fundy—with the album’s wistful title track, an Americana-tinged road tune with one eye on the asphalt and one on the figurative rearview mirror.
Rankin teamed up with fellow East Coast hero Joel Plaskett, who produced and played multiple instruments on Harvest Highway. Recorded to tape with vintage mics, the expertise of engineer Thomas Stajcer, and contributions from studio session all-stars JP Cormier, Ron Hynes, Dale Murray, Jordan Murphy, and Madison Violet, its organic feel comes from its almost entirely live-off-the-floor takes, along with Rankin and Plaskett’s combined love for classic production.
The Cape Breton icon’s eighth solo album is rich in the narrative songwriting traditions that Rankin has been honing for nearly his whole life, filled with crackling yarns and poignant chronicles about feverish marriages in Thunder Bay, unmoored Newfoundlanders, lovers on the run, and fallen soldiers in France. Bookended by songs about home, the collection roams a trajectory not so different from Rankin’s life, with narrators who relish in adventure while also feeling a yearning for the homeland from which they first pulled their roots up.
In his early years with Cape Breton’s favourite musical brood—Mabou’s The Rankin Family—Jimmy established himself as a torchbearer of East Coast folk and one of the most well-respected songwriters in Atlantic Canada, with songs like “Mull River Shuffle” enduring for decades through traditional renditions at Nova Scotia weddings and dance nights, and through the countless cover versions that pay homage to the Rankins. In 2013, CBC listeners voted the 1994 JUNO Award-winning single “Fare Thee Well” the #1 East Coast song of all time, and it was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2020.

[ad_1] At least eight Cape Town beaches were closed during the December and January festive season after sewage spills were reported. But water test results show that several other beaches were also too polluted for safe swimming. Many of the beaches were closed when sewage pump stations could not pump out incoming sewage during load shedding. Read: Power cuts are playing havoc with the country’s water system After continued water quality testing for the presence of E. coli, most of the affected beaches were opened within a day or two. Chair of the mayco committee for water quality, Alex Lansdowne, said then that the maximum E. coli level was 500 colony forming units (cfu) per 100ml, and as soon as tests showed E.coli was lower than this, the beaches were reopened. The city takes coastal water quality samples every two weeks, and tests are done not only for E.coli but also for the presence of enterococci, a more virulent strain of faecal bacteria. The limit for safe swimming is 200cfu of enterococci per 100ml. However, an examination of the fortnightly coastal water quality test results over the periods 6 to 8 December and 13 to 15 December – the latest available on the city’s data portal – showed 21 of 88 coastal monitoring points had enterococci levels above 200cfu/100ml. Of these, 11 were over 1,000cfu/100ml, which is the maximum number of faecal coliforms (bacteria found in sewage) allowed in treated sewage released from sewage treatment plants, according to the national Department of Water and Sanitation. This would imply that it was safer to swim in the discharge from a properly functioning sewage plant than at these beaches at the time the samples were taken. Swimming or surfing in water with high levels of faecal coliforms can lead to gastrointestinal illness (tummy bugs) and ear, nose, and throat infections. Children and immuno-compromised people are particularly at risk. Of the 11 monitoring sites where pollution was higher than levels allowed for treated sewage, eight were popular beaches: Strand at Murray Road (1,300cfu/100ml); Maiden’s Cove tidal pool 1 (1,986cfu/100ml); Maiden’s Cove tidal pool 2 (>2,419cfu/100ml); Lagoon Beach, Milnerton (>2,419cfu/100ml); Gordon’s Bay (1,553cfu/100ml); Glencairn beach (1,553cfu/100ml); The Kom, Kommetjie (>2,419cfu/100ml); Long Beach, Kommetjie (1,120cfu/100ml); Frank’s Bay, Simon’s Town (1,986cfu/100ml) As far as can be determined, none of them, with the exception of Lagoon Beach at Milnerton, which has been polluted for at least three years, had signage warning beach goers that the water was unsafe for swimming or playing in. In response to GroundUp’s questions, the city said it would look into the records “to determine whether pollution incidents occurred at these beaches mentioned in this media enquiry”. Trend analysis The city also said coastal water quality was “not an absolute science” and real time water quality measures did not exist, as laboratory results “take days”. In line with the National Coastal Water Quality Guidelines, coastal water quality was “an estimation of risk determined by looking at the last or previous 24 results taken over a rolling period of 365 days”. The water quality was then rated as poor, sufficient, good, or excellent. “The trend analysis approach analyses long-term trends over 365 days and is a much more reliable tool to determine the overall water quality for a recreational area,” the city said. This trend analysis was formerly available on the City of Cape Town website. But it has been taken off because the City’s Scientific Services Laboratory stopped testing for enterococci in May last year “due to the quality concerns of the agar media used in the enterococci analysis”. These concerns arose after independent tests at Rietvlei found the City lab results to be skewed too high. The city has appointed an external provider, A.L. Abbots & Associates, and the 365-day trend analysis is being updated. A tick-box exercise Community activist
Caroline Marx, who sits on the mayoral advisory committee for water quality, said it appeared the coastal water quality tests were little more than “a tick-box exercise”. Marx has been at the forefront of the fight for the cleanup of the highly polluted Milnerton Lagoon, and helped establish non profit company Rethink the Stink and the Facebook group for responsible wastewater management. She said there didn’t seem to be any follow-up when water quality test results showed consistently high pollution at the beaches. “What action is being taken as a result?” she asked. “Where is the website where visitors can look to see whether the beach is fit for swimming?” Marx welcomed the fact that water quality test results were available to the public. But, she said, the data was highly technical in nature, and determining where the samples were taken required cross-checking coordinates on a programme such as Google Earth. Additionally, the length of time it took to publish the results meant they were of little use to the public. On 30 January, the latest test results were from 15 December, making them a month-and-a-half old. Hidden data Jackie Whales, chair of Friends of the River in Hout Bay, said when the Hout Bay beach was closed on 10 January after sewage pollution due to blocked stormwater pipes, city officials were at the beach testing the water every day. “They were very good,” said Whales. She said engagement with the city had improved since Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis had shaken up the water and sanitation department, but the data portal where water quality results were posted was very difficult to navigate. She said the organisation was thinking of appointing someone to sift through the relevant data and present it. Senior lecturer emeritus at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Global Health Dr Jo Barnes said pollution at city beaches had “been happening for a long time” but city officials seemed to focus only on pollution caused by load shedding. Though the authorities had been quick to close beaches when load shedding led to sewage spills, they had remained quiet about pollution at other beaches, said Barnes. Barnes said the water quality testing limit of 2,419cfu/100ml for enteroccocci also disguised the extent of the pollution. At Maiden’s Cove tidal pool, for instance, which was popular with families and children, the city found enterococci levels to be above the limit of 2,419cfu/100ml, but how much higher is not known. The level could have been much, much more than that, putting people’s health at serious risk, said Barnes. daithí is a single dad living in henford with his teenage daughter felicity. they’ve got a quaint house on a quiet road with an open garden.
things had always been rocky with his long term girlfriend. hoping that things would get better between them when felicity came along, they soon realised that things just weren't going to work. they split up not long after felicity turned four, and daithí decided it was best for her to stay with him because her mother travels for work. nowadays they co-parent with felicity staying with him on the weekdays.
daithí is a veteran daniel stan. he’s been following daniel’s career since before his big popularity boom. he has very proudly collected every single episode of ‘your dad’s garage’ and has them neatly arranged in order of their release date. he bought a very pricey signed poster on e-bay that probably isn’t even legit and he has a little backyard space dedicated to crafting items made on the show. he’s not great but he tries! he doesn’t really watch them for the carpentry tips anyways, there are more interesting things to look at in the show.. 👀 he also made some bootleg merch from a t-shirt printing store that says “#1 daniel fan”

up until last year daithí worked as a caretaker for the library across the road. he had no problem with the job but decided to give it up to pursue his hobby as a career. he’s always had a passion for drink making, and now runs his own craft beer business from his backyard. he sells it on to local pubs and its been pretty successful!
seeing as he works from his garden and he’s in the house alone on the weekends, he decided to partner up with the nearby vet shelter to take some dogs off their hands. he fosters puppies and tries his best to house train them alongside his own four dogs. the place is usually pretty hectic with dogs doing zoomies throughout the whole house but it’s something he’ll never regret getting himself into.
daithí has absolutely no idea any of this is happening. he doesn’t know what ‘kiss me in komorebi’ is, nor does he understand the concept of a bachelor challenge. felicity’s decided not to tell him about the application unless he secures a place, fearing that he might get his hopes up too much.
some fun facts:
everyone always asks him what the meaning behind his face tattoo is. he tells them that it’s a very personal and meaningful reason that he’d rather not share, when in reality he just got it on a drunken night out as a teenager.
he’s the calloway twin’s uncle on their mom’s side. cillian thinks he’s cool but cathal is scared of him. he thinks he’s too loud 😭
he has the strongest accent in the family, and it’s really bad. like it’s difficult to understand what he’s even saying if you don’t know him.
felicity really wanted a septum piercing for her birthday one year, but she was too scared to get it done. daithí made a promise to her that he’d get it done with her so she wouldn’t be as nervous. so now they’ve got matching piercings!
if he does get a part in the show, it’s going to be very difficult to get him to do any of the ‘outdoor enthusiast’ challenges that the producers might have in store. he absolutely hates the cold and is very much a comfort zone kinda guy when it comes to danger.
he’s a big grump in the mornings, but a cup of tea will usually fix that.
also dear lovely shan i hope you don’t mind i used your pic for the poster and tshirt! ❤️ but this was so much fun to make. i’m looking forward to kmik even if daithí doesn’t make it!!! it’s gonna be so good i can already feel it. everything abt it is just mmmwah, not to mention daniel.. what a hottie

Accidentally Roomies Chapter 43
AO3
She drums her fingers nervously on the dashboard. He sees and gives her a smile. A week after Faith received her marrow and she had finally confessed how she felt, they are heading to Lallybroch. He convinced her that she needed time away from the hospital. Faithy is doing better everyday. With Lamb agreeing to stay and give her daily reports, she agrees. Now with them driving down the road that leads to the old manor house, she is getting nervous.
“They will like me?”
“Claire, they will. They will adore you.” He takes her hand after making the turn. “Because I do and because you are sweet, loving, strong, courageous. Don’t fret, mo ghrá. All will be well.”
They drive towards the arches that mark the entrance of the huge manor house. “Wow!” is her response at first seeing it.
“Impressive isn’t she?”
“Oh yeah.” She continues to stare, wide eyed as they drive under the arches and up to the house. He stops in front and before the engine is turned off, the front door is opened and a lady with flowing red curls comes running out. He steps out and comes over to Claire ‘s side, managing just to help her out before she reaches them.
“Jamie, mo mhac!” her arms go around him in a tight hug.
Maman!” he hugs her back. Claire stands by his side, her fingers twisting together as she waits, “Mam, my introduce Claire Beauchamp, my love. “Claire, my mam, Ellen Fraser.”
The woman pulls her into the same type of bone crushing hug she gave her son. “Claire, mo mighean , welcome to Lallybroch.”
Jamie bites at his lips to keep his tears at bay at his mam’s greeting.
“Thank you Mrs. Fraser.”
“None of that lass. Please call me Ellen. Let’s get you inside.” Jamie follows them, as his mam hasn’t let go of Claire. “Everyone is gathered in the living room. They can’t wait to meet you.”
“Everyone?”
“Dinna fash my dear.” They enter what would have been the Great Room in the house ‘s past. Two men, one tall with his black hair turning to grey, the other younger with sandy hair, stand at their entrance. A young lady, short with hair as dark as coal, joins them. “Claire, my husband and Jamie ‘s da, Brian, our daughter, Jenny Murray and her husband, Ian. This is Jamie ‘s lass, Claire Beauchamp.”
His father walks up and takes her hand. “Very nice to meet you Claire. Jamie hasn’t brought a lass home since upper school.”
“Thanks da.” Jamie rolls his eyes behind her but he can’t help smiling. She is special. It is true.
“Nice to meet you too. That is interesting information.”
“Lass, Jamie has been my best mate as long as I can remember. If you need to know something about him, I can probably tell you.” Ian offers as he takes her hand next.
“Why thank you.” She can feel the glare that Jamie is giving his brother -in-law. Ian doesn’t seem fazed.
“Welcome Claire.” Jenny gives her a brief but tight hug, “I am glad to meet you.”
“Thank you Jenny. I am glad to meet you too.”
“Come, have a seat Claire.” Brian sits and his family joins him, propping down on various chairs and couches in the huge room. Claire sits beside Jamie and he takes her hand. “Jamie has told us about Faith. She is in all our prayers.”
“Thank you sir. She is better or I wouldn’t have left her.”
“Of course you wouldn’t. It was an amazing thing you did, giving her your bone marrow.” Jenny says.
“Thank you. I wish I could have done it sooner.”
“Aye, your parents keeping that from you wasn’t right. I’m sorry lass.” Ellen gives her a look of compassion.
“It was pure nonsense. Were either of my bairn’s to need such, I wouldn’t hesitate to move heaven and earth. There you were, the perfect person, and they didn’t ..”
“Janet.” Her da warns.
“Am I lying da? It was wrong.”
“Aye, it was. But talking about it might upset our guest.”
“No Mr. Fraser, please. She isn’t upsetting me. I’ve struggled with my own feelings about it. To close, I guess. I’ve vented to Jamie and my uncle. But, there is still rage. Rage that I wasn’t enough for them to love me, rage that sweet Faith had to go through all of this because of them being so..”
“Clodheided fools.” Jenny offers.
“That works. To see someone else, outside of Jamie and Uncle Lamb be as equally enraged, it helps.”
“Well, I am here for that.”
“We all are.” Ian agrees with his wife.
“Aye, please Claire, feel free to call us by our first names.” Brian adds.
“Thank you Brian.” She turns back to Jenny, “How old are your children?”
“Wee Ian is five. Maggie is three. And, this one, “ her hand goes to her abdomen, “is minus six months.”
“Oh congratulations!”
“Thank you. We are done after this one. It will be up to Jamie to provide more grandchildren.” She gives her brother a wink.
“Janet.” Claire sees he is blushing and laughs. It is the best she has felt in awhile. Jamie was right. Lallybroch is a special place.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the 1964 Vee-Jay LP INTRODUCING THE BEATLES, Pat Benatar, Ray Bolger, Frances X. Bushman, Eddy Clearwater, Jemaine Clement, Shawn Colvin, the 1972 UK LP issue of CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH, Jim Croce, drum heroes Aynsley Dunbar and Max Roach, Donald Fagen, the 1947 Broadway launch of FINIAN’S RAINBOW, George Foreman, the 1928 Gershwin-Romberg-Wodehouse musical ROSALIE, Byron “Whild Child” Gipson, Teresa Graves, Bob Lang (The Mindbenders), Don Letts (Big Audio Dynamite), Ronnie Hawkins, Paul Henreid, sculptress Barbara Hepworth, Frank James, Brian Joo, Mary Ingalls, Jerry Lee Lewis’s 1958 UK single “Great Balls of Fire,” Linda Lovelace, Mendelssohn’s 1833 cantata  "Die erste Walpurgisnacht," Sal Mineo, St. Philomena, Fayette Pinkney (Three Degrees), Johnnie Ray, Lyle Ritz (Wrecking Crew), Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies), Hrithik Roshan, Samira Said, William Sanderson, Michael Schenker, “Silly Symphony” comics, Frank Sinatra Jr., Sonic the Hedgehog, Nadja Salerni-Sonnenberg, Rod Stewart, Scott Thurston, composer-violinist Gasparo Visconti, mega-producer Jerry Wexler, and Scott McKenzie, the singer-songwriter best known for his association with John Phillips and the 1967 Summer of Love anthem “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair),” the sonic tract that called 1000s of young people to California.
Phillips initially invited McKenzie to join that group but he declined, saying he didn’t want “the pressure.” His solo career phased in and out, then he joined a road version of The Mamas & The Papas in 1986.
Periodically I dabbled with the song, dirty demo-ing a grunge-y Iggy Pop-like update in 1990 (oddly prescient to Iggy moving to my old Nob Hill neighborhood years later): https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/san-francisco-be-sure-to-wear-flowers-in-your-hair-demo-remastered-2020
