He steeled himself for her words, knowing how easily they could cut deep as daggers. But he did not argue in his own defense, at least not initially. Not that it wasn’t difficult. He knew he had betrayed Sparrow, he knew that he done the same to Mina without it being his intent. He had been blinded, consumed. And they had all paid the price a hundred fold for his mistakes. For Jack’s too.
He sighed and turned towards the table that held what was left of the brief evening meal and the bottles of rum barely touched. Though now he poured himself a hefty tankard of the drink. The Captain paused as he lifted it towards his lips, glancing towards her again. “If I trust anything, it’s that, m’luv.” He looked away again as he took a heavy drink, the liquor burning all the way down into his guts and causing a rush of heat through him that was welcome. He was always chilled these days, even in the blazing Caribbean sun at midday. It was an unnatural cold, a lingering of the curse and the brief death that had followed it he supposed.
He could never get warm enough.
Mina continued he grievances and Hector listened, all too aware of his wrongs and knowing what predicament they now found themselves in in attempting to get Sparrow back. It was a certain kind of cruel irony to be sure that Captain Jack Sparrow would be the one to save all pirates from their destruction. But the gods often had such a sense of humor.
He looked towards her again at the breaking in her voice and his heart pinched at the sight of how wet her eyes were. Barbossa moved closer then, as close as he had dared in some time. He put his arms around her the way he used to, drew her in without thinking and bowed his head against hers. “You don’t have to be anymore. Never again.”
More than anything he wanted his words to be true.
❛ how about a kiss goodnight? ❜ (Mina to Hector)
In the low lamp light the Captain halted in his undressing to see her there, emerging from the deeper shadows. He hadn't even heard her enter the cabin over the sound of waves outside and the distraction of his own thoughts.
The stern, worried lines that were so frequently etched into his face softened at her approach, making him look a younger man than he was. Mina had that affect on him he found; restoring some of his wild youth to the salt crusted pirate. Ironically her brother had exactly the opposite effect on him most of the time.
"Just a kiss?" he mused, smile quirking his lips. "I thought ye were still angry with me." he added, knowing damn well Mina never forgave anyone until she was good and ready to. He shrugged off his waistcoat, standing in his tunic and breeches, the rest of his effects already discarded. "What is it swayed ye I wonder?"

Something I'm wondering about - for us fantasy writers, how many write in a different subgenre that's not their favorite? It's a silly musing since genres and subgenres are, in the words of Captain Hector Barbossa, less like rules and more like guidelines, but I'm still interested.
Only including those genres because a.) those are my favorite types of fantasy, b.) we got limited space here, c.) I don't want to search for every subgenre of fantasy there is.
I wouldn't really say I have a favorite, but if I had to chose I'd probably go with Urban Fantasy. While I write a lot of that, I haven't released any of it. So the closest poll option for me would be Option 4 lol

CANON VERSES.
young protége
Living in the shadow of the Keeper of the Code isn’t easy for the young Jack Sparrow, particularly when he’s left to fend for himself in the pirate haven of Shipwreck Cove and dismissed for his ambitions to one day command a ship of his own. He wants more than anything to leave the island, and his life, behind, conflicted as to whether piracy is really his true calling, but it is the arrival of a charming French captain that eventually forces Jack into a decision that will unintentionally change his life.
This verse covers Jack's upbringing on Shipwreck Cove, up until the age of twenty, and the Shipwreck flashbacks in The Price of Freedom. I primarily draw upon canon established in this novel, however I also take inspiration from Sins of the Father, one of the Young Jack series. I do not consider any of the other Young Jack books as part of my canon. As far as the flashback scene in DMTNT goes, I do incorporate it, but altered under certain conditions detailed in my DMTNT verse.
five sodding years of work
Press-ganged into the crew of La Vipère after being betrayed by friend and rogue pirate Christophe de Rapièr, Jack knows he cannot return to Shipwreck Cove without facing death for breaking the Pirate's Code. After escaping from the rogue ship, he and fellow crewman Robby Greene sign on to the East India Trading Company, working their way up the ranks as merchant sailors until Jack is offered captaincy of the Wicked Wench by the EITC Director for West Africa, Cutler Beckett.
This verse covers the roughly five year period of Jack's employment in the East India Trading Company. He is hiding his piratical past and playing a very convincing role of a law-abiding merchant sailor, so unless plotted otherwise, your muse should not recognise him as a former pirate.
freedom isn’t free. it comes with the highest of costs
Now branded a pirate and having lost his soul in order to raise the newly rechristened Black Pearl from the depths, Captain Jack Sparrow finally has everything he ever wanted. He’s a pirate, a captain and finally able to forge a legend that will be immortalised for centuries to come. However, that all changes when he begins searching for a way to find the long lost Aztec treasure of Cortez with his first mate, Hector Barbossa. This verse covers the two years of Jack's initial captaincy of the Black Pearl, up until Barbossa's mutiny.
a hard learned lesson it was
Betrayed and marooned on a deserted island after giving up the bearings to the fabled Isla de Muerta, with naught but a pistol with a single shot, Jack's spirit is hardened by revenge. After three days, he barters with rumrunners for passage out of his misery, but the path to regaining his ship is a long one, and he is still intent on living his life in the interim. This verse covers the ten year period prior to Curse of the Black Pearl. Jack does not have his beloved ship in his possession at this time, however that does not necessarily mean that he is ship-less.
the opportune moment
Arriving in Port Royal on the sinking Jolly Mon, fates align and, thanks to a blacksmith and a governor's daughter, Jack finds himself with the perfect leverage to secure his stolen Pearl from the hands of his mutinous and now-cursed first mate. His only issue, it turns out, are said blacksmith and governor's daughter and the small matter of the curse that needs to be lifted. This verse covers the entirety of Curse of the Black Pearl.
what bodes ill
Now reunited with his beloved Black Pearl, Jack knows all will be for naught unless he can find a way out of the soul debt he struck with Davy Jones thirteen years prior. Vexed and bearing a compass that no longer seems to work, Jack begins a desperate search for the dead man’s chest to use as leverage, or else be damned to the depths of the Locker for eternity should his time run out. This verse covers the period from the end of Curse of the Black Pearl through to Jack's death at the end of Dead Man's Chest.
close your eyes and pretend it’s all a bad dream
Returned from the land of the dead and determined not to end up there again, Jack resolves that the only way he can survive is to stab the heart of Davy Jones, thus becoming immortal and sailing the seas forever. However, while he's been gone, the Brethren Court has called all nine Pirate Lords to a convene in a meeting at Shipwreck Cove, while Cutler Beckett and Davy Jones have joined forces to take over the seas and rid them of piracy forever. This verse covers the majority of At World's End, following Jack's rescue from the Locker.
a pirate’s life for me
Following the destruction of the Endeavour, Cutler Beckett’s death and victory of the pirates over the Armada, Captain Jack Sparrow returns to his pirating ways, still seeking immortality after sacrificing his chance at stabbing the heart of Davy Jones so that Will Turner could live. When interacting with Jack, this functions as my DEFAULT VERSE: any unspecified canon threads will default to this point in his timeline.
Unless specified for a particular thread, I will ignore the very end of At World's End and Jack will STILL have the Black Pearl in his possession.
home is wherever you are
Canonically sticking to the end of At World’s End, with Elizabeth going on to bear Will a son, Henry, after he sails away on the Flying Dutchman to carry out his duty for ten years at a time. With the absence of a father in the young Henry Turner’s life, Jack slowly and unconsciously begins to fill that gap through his visits to Shipwreck Cove, which in turn become more and more frequent as he develops a bond with a boy he comes to think of as a son in all but name.
This verse leads directly into my DMTNT-era verse, set nineteen years later, and assumes a familiarity with Henry that is not present in the movie itself.
our sands be all but run
After hearing word that his first mate, Joshamee Gibbs, is being tried for his own crimes in London, Jack mounts a daring rescue attempt -- and ends up embroiled in a venture by none other than Edward Teach to locate and covet the spoils of the Fountain of Youth. In the process, he is reunited with not only an old flame, but his beloved ship, magically trapped into a bottle.
This verse encompasses the entirety of On Stranger Tides and the years afterwards, prior to Dead Men Tell No Tales, as well as any AUs where Jack is seeking the Fountain of Youth.
bad luck dogs you day and night
After a series of near-disasters culminate in the release of Captain Salazar from the Devil’s Triangle ( a once famed pirate hunter now cursed and out for Jack’s blood for trapping him in the first place ), Jack must team up with his stepson, Henry Turner, and the female astronomer Carina Smyth if he hopes to find the Trident of Poseidon – an object with the power to break all curses in the sea. Due to the issues I have with the continuity and characterisation of Jack in this movie, there are a number of alterations to canon detailed HERE.
beyond my beloved horizon
With both his ship and luck finally restored, and a family reunited on land, Captain Jack Sparrow has everything he needs to repair his shattered reputation once and for all. The only thing left is for him to figure out what to do with his simian namesake, now in need of a new master.
Just as a note, this is NOT my default verse.

Welcome HECTOR BARBOSSA of PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN to Tiny Town, Oregon!
Welcome to Tiny Town, Oregon-- an interesting town with a misleading name. A home to everyone from the unwitting humans who believe there are no things that go bump in the night to the demon blooded creatures who may see them as a meal. But as unordinary as the population may seem, the townspeople seem happy. Peaceful. Curious. And what is even more curious is the chat app that seems to pop up on half the populations cellphones, allowing them interaction with the most unlikely company. This town only seems to draw in the strangest of sorts. It’s an ever growing town-- but the word tiny never was meant to describe the size of the city... There’s a reason for everything-- for the application that may have appeared on your phone, for the mysterious area called the Weald, for all the odd things that seem to happen. There’s a reason you came and a reason you don’t want to leave. Everyone has secrets…And in this town, it seems someone is always watching. Don’t bother looking over your shoulder and don’t bother trying to delete Tiny Town Chat. In this town, there’s nothing you can really escape from… but maybe you can try to find some peace.
Tiny Town, Oregon is an 18+ Multifandom Discord Roleplay Server. We are a multifandom modern fantasy group with a growing lore to incorporate humans and heroes, demons and angels, wizards and warlocks, and more!

What did your muse's family look like? Parents, grandparents? Big or small? Who was around the house when your muse was a kid? Childhood HCs
Henry's family is more network than blood ties, though both factor in, and it's like. Big. But also... small.
When it comes to specific wordage there are things I would say that probably wouldn't be said IC by many of them because there's just soooo much family trauma in various shapes all around him. It means these claims don't always get so directly addressed, but it's like this: Elizabeth and Will are his parents, but so is Jack — Bootstrap (to whatever degree is quite manageable for a dead man working on a spirit ship) is Henry's grandfather, and so is Teague, and by some accounts you can throw Mr. Gibbs into some kind of family category around this level too (though I suspect that's more like. when you have Grandparents you don't know that well and don't see that often. I'm not so sure he saw a lot of Gibbs when he was younger but there's still a thread there.) I also think Anamaria was around enough that Henry considers her family, if not necessarily the other way around. Then there's Hetty, whom Henry has known since they were too little to quite remember how they met and to him she's family, too (and by extension, her family — parents, two younger sisters.) This is Henry's close circle. (Which, of course, includes Carina and their girls later. But this is childhood-centric.)
You can take a step out from this and start getting people like the community on the lighthouse island, Thyra and the other villagers, and in Shipwreck Cove, Lucia and Auntie Nettie+her charges as well as the Pirate Lords Hector Barbossa (whom, by all evidence, was a confidant of Elizabeth's) Mistress Ching and Gentleman Jocard, and Elizabeth's contacts. This is also, in a way, family, it's just the next level out, and gets very complicated very quickly. This is part of Henry's... openness? His lines aren't always the clearest, or most defined, and it's only when he's taxed and stretched thin and pulled apart at his very core that the lines begin to show at all. In a certain way, all of Shipwreck is family (community) — in an even more complicated way, all of the Brethren Court's many extending enterprises outside of the cover are family. Or at least something he belongs to. The ripples roll out and out.
Many of these people were around when he was younger — in particular, Teague, Autie Nettie, Hetty's family, and Jebat and Teretai (Shabira's parents) are all people who looked after Henry when Elizabeth had to leave him behind for one reason or another. That's how his family-shaped list got so large to begin with, there was a real... it-takes-a-village kind of bond and building ground. All these people who made it possible for him to grow up to be the way he is -- for him to grow up at all, a boy born into a community fighting for their right to live, his mother a primary target of that fight. But the thing about that is I think... it was something Elizabeth had to learn, that necessity pushed her into discovering this net of people around her who can and could and would and wanted to help and see her succeed. And I really do think that it's that whole net and yet also. I think it was also very much a little nest of two.
I have this feeling like Elizabeth was initially really protective of Henry in almost a hide-him-from-the-world way. At least while he was very very little, anyway. And then as things shifted it became necessary for her to trust other people and etc., hence the net. Henry's ever-growing tangle of threads and ribbons and anchors and bowlines. But when you really really really start pulling it apart (which he Hates btw, he Hates when you start asking him to make things a hierarchy, when you start stripping away at it — that that's something you can even do-) I do think, with enough dedicated dismantling and callous cutting-away, when you get to the middle it's Henry and Elizabeth. And if you cut any more, you kill him outright, not just unmoor him.
And so there's ripples and strings and he hates when you ask but really, the thing is, it's him and mum. Him and Mum at the end of every day, with whatever bedtime rituals. Him and Mum inventing games and having hard conversations. Him and Mum with their idealism. Their tempers. Him and Mum with a key to a chest holding a heart that only still beats for them. Him and Mum, ten years, fifteen years, twenty years waiting in their roost at the top of the world.

・ JOE MANGANIELLO as 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐔𝐒 𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐙𝐎 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐈𝐀𝐍 ✦ FORTY-NINE
𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐃, 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐘 𝐃𝐎𝐖𝐍. 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐁𝐔𝐑𝐍 𝐌𝐄… 𝑩𝑼𝑹𝑵 𝑴𝑬 𝑻𝑶 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑮𝑹𝑶𝑼𝑵𝑫. There is elegance to be found amongst the unthinkable—the sinister and heinous; the territory of which so few others dare to venture. The Venomous rises only in the night, sending silence out as hymn of his cleansing rituals. A baphomet under darkness, stalking through the corners of which the unsuspecting knows only as secure and safe. He is infamously coined the Angel Maker, as his need to exercise power over those who have stolen it all their lives—vigorously, relentlessly—overcomes him. He justifies his reapings on the vow that the victims deserved it; that he has given their wretched existences a new beginning in death. He is spiraling, losing control, losing himself, amongst the moonlight.
This muse is in development and is available for new plots. Please note, this muse is a serial killer. Do not inquire if you are not comfortable writing against this archetype.
・ 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐘 / 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒 / 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄 / 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐒
character parallels include: the angel maker (hannibal), jigsaw (the saw franchise), dr. hannibal lecter (hannibal), joker (the dark night), patrick bateman (american psycho), thomas shelby (peaky blinders), raymond 'red' reddington (the blacklist), berlin (money heist), light yagami (death note), frank delfino (how to get away with murder), gus fring (breaking bad), dom cobb (inception), ursula (the little mermaid), hector barbossa (pirates of the caribbean), lux luthor (smallville)

❛ working together again, it’s just like old times. ❜ (from Jack to Hector 🙂)
"Ha!" Hector scoffed loudly in Jack's direction as the pair fought their way through the boisterous, drunken crowd, having to pause here and there to thrust past the more rowdy and unruly of the tavern's raucous patrons. "I've agreed to nothing yet Sparrow! I'm here for the Pearl. You're just an unfortunate part of the bargain."
The taller pirate shot the other a warning look, as if to remind him he hadn't forgiven him for abandoning him on that dock in Tortuga and wasn't in the mind to do so any time soon; even if they did currently share a common goal.

“Can’t sleep?” (Jack to Hector)
It was by no means a rare occasion for one captain to walk out on deck in the middle of the night only to find the other already there, steering their precious beauty through the dark. So, no, perhaps Hector shouldn't have been so surprised to hear a familiar voice calling for him from the weather deck as he approached.
"Aye... Sleep seems to be avoidin' me tonight." Barbossa nodded as he'd reached the other's side. "Truth be told, Jack, I didn't expect to find you out here at this hour. What's it that keeps ye up at this hour?"

❛ i’m not afraid of you. ❜ (For hector)
From where he stood facing out the large windows that looked out on the open water at the Pearl's keel, Hector gave a small exhale of a laugh, just barely audible. He glanced over his shoulder at the woman, smiling but not in a sinister sort of manner. The look was rueful, rather, as if he pitied her attempt at sounding brave. Though the fact that she was confronting him in the first place was proof enough she was.
"I'm a desperate man, my lady," Hector answered honestly, rounding to face her again, taking a few steps closer so that they might see each other a bit better in the waivering lantern light of the cabin. "And desperate men are capable of anything, as I'm sure you already know."
He looked at her evenly, blue eyes boring into hers. "So, if were positions were reversed, I'd have to say I would be afraid. If you chose to come between me and what I need."
Barbossa produced the cursed coin once more from it's place within his vest pocket. "Where be the last piece?"

Much as he had to be grateful for; having at least SOME command of the Pearl and having Sparrow in his life once more with neither of them holding daggers behind their backs...it was moments like these Hector missed the relative peace of having the ship to himself.
He looked up from his book and blinked at the blustering man, chirping and squawking like the animal he so aptly took his name from. “What the devil are you--?” But he before he could get it all out, the man was in his face, continuing to bluster. For once, leaving Hector rather speechless.
His brow furrowed, lip curling back as he was about to ask Sparrow what sort of foul rum he’d gotten into and bloody poisoned himself with because he was more raving mad than usual, when the colorful pirate grabbed him closer and promptly planted his lips against his.
 Well...that was certainly different.
Sparrow was turning on heel the next moment, almost smacking the taller man in the face with his hair as made to storm away. Hector stood their blinking and mute for a long second...
And then reason gave him a swift kick in the ass and sent him into motion, striding on far longer legs than Jack, and managing to catch hold of the man by the back of his jacket and yank him back, spinning him around and knocking him off balance until Hector had to catch him to keep him from going over on his ass. “As assuming as I know you find yourself to be, Jack, I don’t care to be interrupted so rudely, nor have ye smashing yer face into mine on a whim without so much as a warnin’. I’d ask if ye were drunk, but I can taste it.” He pulled Jack up right but didn’t let go of him. He didn’t look near as annoyed now as he looked at the darker man. In fact he looked almost as mischievous as Sparrow. His hand snaked back and threaded through a bit of Sparrow’s thick dark hair and pulled him in closer. It was not a threatening, harsh sort of pull. But rather the firm one of a man who wants a lover closer to him. “If yer goin’ to kiss someone, ye ought to do it proper, ye git.”
He pulled Jack in and returned the kiss. Not the hasty peck that Sparrow had given him before trying to escape but a real kiss. One that lingered for a heartbeat or two, lips slotted together warmly, firmly.
And then just like the greying ginger released his catch, stepping back and giving Jack room to breathe. But there was no denying the little twinkle in his eye. “That’s how it’s done.”
I dare you to kiss Captain Barbossa!!!
Tumblr media
"You what?"
Cursing under his breath, Jack takes up a bottle of rum and has several large gulps before setting it back down again. He fixes his hat firmly onto his head and stomps out of his cabin in search of his pirate rival.
"OI! BARBOSSA! Want a word wiv you."
He gets right up in the older man's face.
"I've had it up to here. You and your stupid beard and your stupid hat and your stupid voices daring me to do this. You want me so bad, have the balls to say so."
Poor Hector, he's nothing to do with any of it, but it's enough confusion in the moment for Jack to snatch hold of him, kiss him, and storm off before anyone's the wiser.
