yknow what. i really liked kyler and miguel’s conversation at the college. “the safety’s always gonna be there. but you gotta chase after that dream” was genuinely beautiful line and if this is the last we see of kyler… i’m happy about it. everyone has been giving miguel the realistic and dream crushing choice that yeah, he’ll have to settle for community college, but the guy that kicked his ass before he stepped foot into his sophomore year is telling him he thinks he can go places if he lets himself try and that to me is great for miguel.

not to like, state the obvious or anything, but the parallel between Wilson Fisk and Miguel O’Hara in the 2 Spiderverse films... they both wanted to be reunited with their family and their happiness but their actions and outcomes were vastly different, in line with their characters... poetic cinema

Fisk wanted to bend everything around him to his own will, pretty much textbook for how his character is in multiple iterations. he despises any compromise, and expects the world to submit to him, or he will break it and then remake it so that it does

Fisk was happy with his family, he didn’t want to be anyone else or change anything, he wanted to turn back the clock by taking an alternate version of his family from another world and expecting them to pretend for him

but Miguel left his own world to slot into another one. from the comics we know his life was full of abuse, trauma, and forced addiction, all on top of gaining powers that came with significant drawbacks

Miguel was so unhappy that he was more than willing to give up his original self for his chance of happiness. he didn’t bend anything to fit him, he distorted himself to fit another world - and his happiness was predicated on pretending to be someone who made others happy. he lived a very quiet lie that physically hurt nobody until it was too late

the difference in the way they cheated happiness is also reflected in the outcomes. as a violent and self-serving person, Fisk had the collider blow up in his face followed by an intense fight with Spider-man and ultimately incarceration. but Miguel quietly deceived everyone, and his world didn’t fall apart immediately, instead slowly unravelled as he continued to maintain a lie that, on the surface, had no negative consequences

they were both deluded about their happiness, but perhaps Miguel less so because he wasn’t expecting anyone else to be deluded for him. Fisk was so deluded that he thought an alternate version of his family would be happy to see him (or at least pretend to be) while knowing the truth that they were being ripped from their own world, whereas Miguel was the only one who knew the truth and kept it hidden from everyone around him

Miguel didn’t expect anyone else to be in on his lie, and he was supposed to carry the weight of that lie alone, but ultimately he was the only one to physically survive when everyone else around him perished (insert metaphor about ‘asking for help’ or ‘being honest with the people around you’ here)

I was thinking the other day that man, kokuto neji is such a character and I haven't liked a writer character like this since... shang qinghua?

which naturally led me to this thought: jj fic with svsss-style au where neji transmigrates/gets isekai'd into the world of havenna. as domina, of course.

it's extra fucked up imo because at least when sqh transmigrated in his book, he made up all of those characters and they mostly stayed in the realm of fantasy. like, sure, lbh was kinda based on himself in some ways and mbj was his ideal fantasy, but they still mostly stayed fictional, you know? sqq (sy) had to fix his plots because the characters sqh wrote strayed too far from their original plotlines

but theater makes a fictional world a bit too real and personal, especially when you use real people as inspirations for your writing. with neji, he'd be looking at rukiora and see three different people (mitsuki acting as rukiora; rukiora who was written based on a younger version of neji; rukiora who is her own person in this weirdly real world of havenna). neji would see fugio and to him that is both sou acting as fugio and the fugio who grew up with poison flowers. miguel is both fumi and the guy who ran away from his neshiromi fields. the only constant would probably be chicchi. she is too much like kisa in that... well. neji didn't really have a backstory for chicchi. chicchi is a blank canvas just like kisa is as an actor.

anyway. yeah, very sv-style character arc where neji, much like shen yuan in sv, is forced to humanize the villain. except this villain was his creation and is also tied to a bunch of personal issues for neji that he Doesn't Want To Think About and also he doesn't? really understand the character he wrote tbh?

isn't art supposed to process your emotions for you!! why must he process these himself!!

can you imagine neji, who always casts himself as a seer of some sort (fortune teller, ushinoko) or someone who generally has some control over his future or his "creation" (who is mary if not just another side of neji anyway; she's takihime redux, and takihime is also. neji). imagine this dude being transported inside the play he wrote but he doesn't understand it and he has no control over it and everyone's acting both in character and out of character. he both knows and doesn't know these people. they're fictional but also... real? does he treat them as real people? is domina real? he wanted his actors to imbue parts of themselves into his characters. are these people really just characters from a script? are they his quartz classmates? is he allowed to even hope that that's the case?

it's both THE improv exercise of his dreams and also. a nightmare

On the occasion of Dilandau and Celena's birthday 2024, I feel this is an appropriate time to share some of the reasons why this character is special to me.

There's so much we don't know about Dilandau based on the canon information in the anime, but what we do see provokes tremendous curiosity! How does the whole biological sex changing thing work? Is Dilandau "trans" in our modern sense of the word or something else entirely? Who is the real identity - Celena or Dilandau? Is Dilandau happy in their role as the bringer of death and destruction or are they suffering the whole time? Does Dilandau truly care about the Dragonslayers and what is the real relationship among them? Why is Dilandau filled with so much hate and aggression, and are they really evil or just a troubled teen with access to a flame throwing giant mecha? There are many interpretations of Dilandau and every fan has their own idea of who and what Dilandau really is.

Of course, as a transmasculine person myself I feel a kinship with Dilandau due to their intriguing and never fully explained gender identity. Dilandau was one of the first transmasculine coded anime characters I saw, along with Lady Oscar, when I was a young person and hadn't yet figured out my own gender identity. Seeing characters like this got me curious about unusual gender identities and it just resonated with me even though I didn't fully comprehend why that was at the time.

Finally, being a fan of Dilandau and creating fanworks about them gave me comfort during a very dark chapter of my life when I lost my Dad to cancer, faced financial instability, and was trapped in an abusive relationship with my now-ex fiancee. It was difficult for me to care about myself when my self-esteem was at its lowest, but I could care about Dilandau. Creating stories about Dilandau overcoming horrible trauma, loss, and abuse before finding a happy ending with Miguel cheered me up and inspired me to imagine a more hopeful future for myself.

Dilandau continues to be my muse, my anime waifu, my comfort character, and my Best Girl (that's a gender neutral term in my book!). I look forward to sharing more fan art in the future as well as the thought-provoking fanfiction about Dilandau and Miguel I've been working on for the past year. I'm sure they'll have that special place in my heart for many years to come. Please join me in wishing them a very happy birthday 2024!

The cold draft on her skin makes her shiver. She closes the window, wrapping her white lab coat around her lithe frame, and wanders deeper into the morgue to prep for the next examination. After her hands are washed and layered with a new set of black latex gloves, Chitose sets aside the various tools of the trade. As she does, something dawns on her. 

She doesn’t recall ever opening the window in the first place.
