✨Spoilers for Falsettos ✨

Can we talk about Whizzer from falsettos for a second! How at every turn it is implied that he not only endured so much from Marvin but also society! That out of his four parents he is Jason’s favorite not because he lets Jason get away with everything but because he genuinely cares! That he dies before there is a name for his disease! That his parallels with Trina leads to the baller line of “that’s my life, he shared my life�� which doesn’t just mean the good loving part of Marvin but the anger and “funny names” that in games I play he like distanced himself all the way that he doesn’t see any of the cast until the baseball game! You’ve gotta die sometime is heartbreaking! His two interpretations on death as either an individual or passion as it all fades to back or as a gentle kind force as it all fades to white is amazing imagery! I very much enjoy this musical. Musical Monday (the final one)

Yes, you read that title right, this will be The Road to 1,000 blog’s final Musical Monday post. The Season Announcement Wednesday posts will continue as normal, as will the Play Reviews (once theaters re-open, that is), but this will be the curtain call for the weekly look at musicals. This feature of mine, which began simply from how many musical show shirts I owned from buying them at National Tours’ swag stores, became a weekly dive into a musical Tony Award-based theme. With my personal history with this week’s musical, it’s proper to end the Musical Monday series on this one. So, let’s go and check out the stats and my anecdotal reminisces with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Other: In addition to Best Musical and the Tonys for which it won, Beautiful...was Tony-nominated for Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Jarrod Spector), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Anika Larsen), and Best Orchestrations (Steve Sidwell)

Fun Fact: Because of its longevity, the replacement casts included Vanessa Carlton, Cilina Kennedy, and Abby Mueller as Carole; Kara Lindsay and Jessica Keenan Wynn as Cynthia; and Michelle Pawk and Nancy Opel as Genie. 

Beautiful...is the sole musical I had the pleasure of seeing from its Pre-Broadway tryout to its Broadway run, including its national tours, and multiple Broadway casts in-between. From the Pre-Broadway tryout in San Francisco, I knew it would be a fun Broadway jukebox musical; little did I know just how big it would become. Ms. Mueller was an actress I had seen just a couple times before, and her Carole was incredible to see in San Francisco and then in the Stephen Sondheim Theater on Broadway. In addition, one of my good friends and former cast mates, Salisha Thomas, made her national tour and Broadway debut in Beautiful...Seeing her tour the show and then reprise her track on Broadway was a surreal, very-proud moment. Beautiful... is a musical I will never grow tired of, and I anticipate a successful life in the professional, regional, and community theatre circuits. The cast album is a beautiful (see what I did there) record of the original cast’s wonderful vocals and Mr. Sidwell’s excellent orchestrations and arrangements, all which bring this writing/performing quartet and hall-of-fame artist in Ms. King, to Broadway life. Give the album a listen, check out the clips on YouTube, and let’s dream of some day (hopefully soon) where this show can be on a stage near you.

Musical Monday

Seize the day, it’s time for Musical Monday! This Best Musical nominee does not need much of a preamble; it was destined to be a Broadway hit, award wins or not. Let’s take a peek at the highlights of this beloved musical.

Other: In addition to Best Musical and its two wins, Newsies also received Tony nominations for Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Jeremy Jordan), Best Direction of a Musical (Jeff Calhoun), Best Orchestrations (Danny Troob), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Tobin Ost; Projection Design by Sven Ortel)

Fun Fact: In quite the turn of showing up on stage after bombing on the big screen, Jack Feldman and Alan Menken went from only having a Razzie Award for Worst Song (”High Times, Hard Times”) to show for their score work to holding a Tony Award for Best Score Written for the Theatre. 

Newsies has a jovial score, and some lovely added tunes as compared to the movie musical. Plus, the dancing! When I saw the tour, I sat back and concluded confidently that this musical won the two Tony Awards it was supposed to. Now that it’s making its rounds in the regional and community theatre circuit, it won’t be too difficult (and hopefully not too long) for you to see this stage adaptation.
