Adding to more Gifted kid discussion: While I wasn't in my schools gifted section, I was always told that if I had been one point higher I would have been. At the same time, I was always noted as the "smart kid" in class, and i viscerally feel every post talking about the results that happen from being "Gifted" and having undiagnosed ADHD. It's resulted in a bit of a "neither fish nor fowl" anxiety scene and often always feeling never "good" enough.

Honestly the biggest myth about asynchronous development (why not go whole hog and use the technical term instead of “giftedness”) is “Schools are the best at telling who is and who isn’t! If you were in your school’s Gifted program, you were Gifted, if you weren’t you arent!”

Asynchronous development is a fucking complex concept and it can’t be reduced to a single IQ score. Schools have to make really subjective calls about who gets special funding and who doesn’t, and those calls can be as dumb as “We only have funding for 20 so the bottom 5 meet our criteria but we don’t have space for them” or “She technically qualifies but her band class is at the same time as the pullout program so we won’t put her there.”

(Tangent: I have a friend whose Master’s thesis was basically, “How many teacher training programs include accurate information about asynchronous development?” Basic Facts About Gifted Kids. Like, “Gifted children can have significant social and emotional difficulties” and “Gifted children may not necessarily be top performers; conditions like learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental illness and childhood trauma can prevent them from performing in a way that shows their true abilities, and many teachers miss Giftedness in students from marginalized backgrounds or ethnic groups.”

Only like... less than 10% of the programs he studied included that shit. So the VAST MAJORITY of the teachers in his state were just walking around never having been required to learn it. I did a Master’s in Psychology; my coursework never covered it either. There is a huge trove of research out there most professionals in the field never look at.)

On the? Upside? It appears NONE of us feel Good Enough, so it’s not like you missed out on it! I felt like I Wasn’t Really Gifted, Just Kind of Bright for most of my life because my district had a mainstreaming policy and I wasn’t a child prodigy, and that only changed when I learned how to read psychometric reports and went back and requested my educational records.

So hey: Fuck what your school said! Qualitative experience matters as much as quantitative tests! If you read about being seen as freakishly smart and having a nagging sense of Good But Not Good Enough and go “Hey, it me” then you get to join the party! Welcome to Former Gifted Child Anonymous!

to add to your excellent analysis of Captain Britain and Meggan: the interesting thing with how he got the Cap powers is that he had a decision between taking a sword and an amulet from Merlin, and he chose the amulet... but is still expected to be a warrior. Future characters in the Captain Britain Mythos include Lionheart, a woman who was given/chose the sword, and an alt!Brian who also chose the sword

003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:

How I feel about this character: Well, I wasn’t much impressed with him in Azure Moon, as he felt like a wasted opportunity, but the Verdant Wind route did a lot to raise him in my esteem. There just wasn’t enough done with him overall and without a deeper exploration of the Almyran angle (which Cyril as a character doesn’t even WANT to explore) he just comes off as a one-note Rhea fanboy, which isn’t fair to either of them.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Uh... just ‘cause he CAN end up with Hilda doesn’t mean that he should. Pass. And it’s not even his age, it’s the way everyone relates to him.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Dunno about relationship but I really enjoyed his support chain with Claude. It was a neat way to demonstrate a key limitation of the main lord in that route.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I like Cyril and had fun using him as a Wyvern rider alongside Claude. I enjoy that his very existence pokes holes in a couple of narratives both inside the game and in fandom about both the church and the Almyrans.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: If he’s going to be underfoot for almost the entire game, he should’ve had more development as opposed to “I’m gonna hang out in Rhea’s bedroom for all month making sure it’s clean for her when she gets back.” You’re an adult now, Cyril. Get out of Rhea’s bedroom.

Favorite friendship for this character: Ashe I guess? Feels like a foundation for an actual friendship instead of a weird dynamic with blind spots.

My crossover ship: None at present. Cyril oughta meet pre-timeskip Finn though so they can compare notes on being fanboys.

idk at the moment if there’s anything that says more solidly that Edel has a more limited lifespan, but I’ve gone with that theory mainly becuase… why else would she need to go so hard so fast with her plans unless she didn’t think she had a lot of time to live? even if she’s wrong and she has a normal life span, she’s might be under the assumption that she has a limited time to live

that’s actually why I don’t like the fact that it’s so readily accepted as canon (at least on forums and the like) -- I feel like the “she has limited time” explanation is an excuse that softens Edelgard’s actions and, in doing so, also deprives her of part of her agency (something the Agarthans already do!)

I think a core part of her character is that she does just... go really hard. she’s unyielding. she doesn’t budge. and it’s not because she has a reduced life span. it’s just who she is

FE3H Ship that needs more love: I think I’ve seen a single mention of Dedue/Mercedes in the wild, and that’s criminal. But really any of the rarer pairs, I just want some variety. I like a lot of the ships in this game!

FE3H OTP: hmm, I dunno if I’m THAT attached to it yet cause I can still multiship the characters in question- but I’m really liking the various chemistry and drama of Felix/Sylvian/Ingrid. I like Felix/Ingrid. I like Sylvain/Ingrid. I even the almost obnoxiously popular Felix/Sylvain... Since anything with Ingrid’s so very rare, I guess I best like something where she’s acknowledged in their close friendship.

Happy late birthday! hope you had a fun day. Exalted character info: Lie-Smith, as can be predicted, claims one day a month to be his birthday. It changes every year, and he mainly uses it as an excuse to get out of a Silver Pact assignment he'd really rather not go on. It's also never worked but that doesn't keep him from trying. (on his actual birthday he does something special against his old family as a gift to himself)

39. What do they like to ridicule? What do they find stupid?

A little backstory first - Demyan is the leader of a vampire coven in Moscow and works a little differently to most of the other major coven leaders in that he doesn’t have a group of official advisors. He was supposed to but then found out that they had a hand in his father’s death and his being turned and made leader and hand them executed. He’s viewed as unstable, unpredictable and the world council keep a very close watch on him because he toes every single line he possibly can.

Demyan finds the idea of relying on advisors stupid. He might ask the advice of somebody but he can and will completely disregard it if it’s not exactly what he wants to hear; ultimately all decisions are his and he likes it that way and doesn’t really understand why the other coven leaders wouldn’t do away with their advisors.

The Netflix anime. Alucard in particular just... subvocalizes, practically, and I can’t turn the volume up because there’ll probably be a smash cut to people screaming and dying as soon as I do. Dracula also is pretty mumbly, and while I don’t object to Richard Armitage’s voice acting in other contexts (he was solid in Wolverine: The Long Night) his cadence doesn’t suit the dialogue written for Trevor very well.

Sylpha is the only character who actually sounds good and is well-voiced, with reasonable sound mixing.

Also, the dialogue in general is just.... weird??? The ‘I think running water would kill me’ scene felt incredibly jarring. Makes for a funny gifset, but not good TV.

Anyway. I’m watching for Sylpha anyway, so the rest of it matters less to me, but it’s annoying.

interesting question: had any injuries in the past?

I was gonna say Dindrane and Dez, but. uh, Dez is god-tier with time magic, so he definitely cheats and if he has been injured, you’d never know.

I think in the canon timeline, Dindrane was laid up with a bad case of fel-induced breathing difficulties post-Black Temple, which would have been a while ago, and is something she’s well past.

The only significant injury I think I ever had for a character was Kirielle, who has a lot of trouble walking after she took a hamstring area hit that was initially badly healed.

Ship that pisses you off

It’s not so much the ship pisses me off as a subset of the fanbase ticks me off, but already extremely turned off by Hilda/Marianne because of the double standards I feel are being applied to Hilda to make her this uwu soft wlw and therefore unproblematic. Just scanning the Ingrid tag on this hellsite vs the Hilda one... yeah

The whole shitty undercurrent of redeeming a troublesome female character through lesbianism is strong with this IMO and we don’t have time to unpack that shit right now.

small counter argument to this theory in particular: when Edelgard was 13-14 she would have been actively experimented on in Enbarr, or it would have been just after those experiments ended with her being the only survivor, either way unable and unlikely to be healthy enough to be sent back to the kingdom to kill a king and his retinue while organizing with other Kingdom nobles.

oh that’s fair, but Dimitri wouldn’t know any of this, so it doesn’t really change that, from his perspective, Edelgard could’ve very well been involved

(certainly not trying to argue she was involved, bc we know she wasn’t :D)
