Hell Breaks Loose - Thoughts

First of all, the book is extremely short. Like less than three hours read. It's 320 pages long, because it is written in the largest font I've seen in over a decade. I read books with font this large when I was six. Part of me feels like I'm being made fun of for being 23 and still reading Skulduggery Pleasant, the other part of me thinks they just desperately wanted to stretch this so it seems longer. To give you an idea, here is a comparison between HBL and my copy of SP10:

Apart from this, yeah, it‘s a fun read. On par with the last few books of the series. I laughed a couple of times, but tbh I‘ve become a bit jaded with the recent books and I wasn‘t expecting anything amazing. I got what I expected. There‘s some nice tidbits of new info about the war: A character who‘s been a mentor to Skulduggery and Ghastly, Hopeless appears obviously, and Ghastly‘s mother gets a name. So yay for that? There were things to like for sure, but let's just say there's a plot twist that made me groan bc *of course* in a not good way, and people die (again) and it doesn't matter (again).

I still think everyone would be better off just reading Dead Men Walking by @purplejabberwock (https://archiveofourown.org/series/49976) which is an incredibly well thought out alternate universe Skulduggery Pleasant Book Series (literally Books 1-6 so far with several prequels) where all the Dead Men are still alive. Hopeless has an actual personality in that one, so does Larrikin, Erskine isn't evil and it's both comforting feel good hilarious Dead Men shenanigans and also really exciting and suspenseful. If you still like canon, good for you. If you've become disillusioned, read Dead Men Walking. Trust me on this.

This is an OC from the Dead Men Walking Series (https://archiveofourown.org/series/49976). Bonza Digger is a Detective in a City where Mortals and Sorcerers live together in harmony and everyone knows about magic. She‘s a burrower like Sanguine and pretty cool. For example, she pulls Sanguine out of a wall and doses him with platypus venom, which interrupts magic and is pretty painful. She‘s also pretty funny and calls everyone „mate“ 😄

Let me introduce you to Descry Hopeless. If you thought the Dead Men were cool and impressive, well, let me tell you about the coolest one. Hopeless is an immensely powerful mind reader. He reads the thoughts of everyone around him at all times. He spied on Mevolent during the war, he's the reason Meritorius was never assassinated, he's saved the Dead Men countless times and is as close to omniscient as a person can be. His magic is one of the best kept secrets around.

Due to his abilities, he's also the most empathetic person you have ever known. He knows you better than yourself and is a phenomenal therapist because of it. He can read a person so deeply that not only does he know all their secrets, even the ones they hide from themselves, but he also becomes them in a sense. You think you're fighting Hopeless? No. You are fighting yourself.

If you've gotten disillusioned with Landy, give this a chance. I promise, you will love it.

Mistress Aoife is Ghastly‘s mother. She‘s short, buff and boisterous, flirts jokingly just like the Dead Men and adopted Skulduggery as soon as she met him. (With his pants down in Ghastly‘s shop while Ghastly stitches up a gunshot wound on his butt.) She‘s from the Dead Men Walking Universe (https://archiveofourown.org/series/49976) and can be found in the prequel stories by purplejabberwock and AmaraqWolf on AO3. Honestly I wish she featured more because she‘s amazing and everyone should have a mother like that. Also the fact that she was around for much of the war and probably mothered all the Dead Men is such a cute thought….

Miss Liliya Artemis, another Dead Men Walking character. She is a confident sorceress who‘s biggest pain in the ass is that annoying Skulduggery Pleasant who keeps who keeps following her around and needling her in a misguided attempt to flirt. Yes, this is Skulduggery‘s wife and she‘s as cool and competent as any partner of Skulduggery would have to be. You can read about her in purplejabberwock‘s Dead Men Talking on AO3.

Rover Larrikin from purplejabberwock‘s Dead Men Walking (https://archiveofourown.org/series/49976). Rover is an Elemental with a tragic backstory, but he‘s also a people person who keeps the team together. He is the one who brought everyone back together after the war, he and Dex also got married once because they needed an excuse to throw a party. There are frequent discussions about who is the husband and who is the wife 😄

Macha Morrígna is another cool character from the Dead Men Walking Series. She‘s an ex-cleaver who didn‘t become a ripper after her service so she could care for her daughter Gail. She now heads security at the sanctuary and trains Cleavers.
