[Review] Team Sonic Racing (PS4)
Tumblr media
They sure tried something with this one.
Before I go wrap up this season of Sonic I thought I’d catch up on Sumo Digital’s latest racing game. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed were great and (the latter especially) showed a willingness to experiment in the kart racer zone. Team Sonic Racing, while it has a slightly less clunky name, goes further to stand out by building itself around the “team” dynamic, to mixed results.
First, the basics. As a direct successor to S&ASRT, it replicates the (land-based) driving mechanics, most notably the mid-air tricks which I always liked. The story mode too is a similar progression of unlocking new tracks and drivers by clearing races and grand prix with semi-optional tasks to keep it interesting, plus some decent side-challenges thrown in, like slalom gates, destruction races, or ring-collecting. The wack-a-doo items in the previous games have been swapped out for Sonic branding-appropriate Wisp powers, the functions of which lean harder into “Mario Kart clone” territory than ever before.
The titular mechanic of course plays a big part in the core gameplay, as well as the story. Yes, there’s a story, although it’s pretty shallow and only plays out through stilted cutscenes in between races; they are fully voice acted, to be fair. As for the racing ramifications, it takes a bit to get used to. Rather than aiming for a personal place, you want to work with your two teammates to get an overall higher score. This is done with an array of interactions: driving in your buddy’s slipstream, skimming by them to recover, and trading items for boosted ones or ones exclusive to their class (in Heroes-esque style, everyone is a Power, Speed, or Technique class). Do enough team actions and you can enter a super mode, which becomes essential later on in the campaign.
Keeping a team focus makes racing a more complex experience, but it’s a bit fraught. In single player, everyone else is AI which makes the behaviour of friend and foe alike something of a crapshoot. And if your fellows are lagging behind, should you purposefully slow down to more actively assist them?? That just feels wrong, not that the game encourages it. Having friendly racers as well as hostile ones adds a dimension to races that feels fresh, but making it work in practice seems a unique challenge that is perhaps not addressed to a wholly satisfying degree.
The other factor that generated discussion in my circles in the lead-up to release was the game’s content. Sumo had stated that a focus on the Sonic series as opposed to the Sega-wide crossovers they’d done previously would let them drill down more to please Sonic fans. But I would argue this isn’t evident so much in the final product! The stages are the familiar trite choices: triple-dipping on mostly Heroes-based environs with a dash of Classic, Colours, and Unleashed, a good chunk of them actually returning tracks from the previous two Sumo games. And the character roster is cut well back in number compared to them.
Sure it’s about the same size as the Riders cast, but Sumo’s rosters were so ambitious previously, and the teams-of-3 structure just fires the imagination. A Babylon Rogues team seems a no-brainer, or how about Tikal/Chaos/Chao, or even some Classic groupings with Mighty/Ray/Honey or Bean/Bark/Fang? That’s not to mention the bizarre omissions and out-of-place matchups: like where is Cream, or why are Blaze and Silver partnered with Vector (in the absence of the other Chaotix), a character they have no history with and indeed have barely ever met?
It’s these factors that make the game feel a bit rushed, hurriedly built around a gimmick and shoved out the door, perhaps hampered by Sega’s rumoured increasingly strict chokehold on the Sonic brand. I didn’t even mention the “red-flag” gacha element, although it’s relatively innocuous: using an in-game currency to get new car parts, cosmetics, and basic single-use effects. It’s just a bit deflating after S&ASRT was one of the most fresh and fun racers of its generation that this follow-up would be a bit of a flop.
Also, I’ve been playing the accompanying mobile game simply called Sonic Racing. Sega’s mobile Sonic team Hardlight handled simplifying the console game and turning it into a free-to-play PvP timed-event/gacha-fest as is the way on mobile. Four months after TSR’s release it instead was dumped on Apple Arcade, clearly hastily retooled to remove microtransactions as is frequently the way on this platform. It’s got unique tracks and one unique character, Classic Sonic. How did they add just one character you ask? Well the team mechanic is still there but the groupings are not set, you make your own ad-hoc teams with whoever you’ve unlocked and each character has a single team-aiding ability. The gameplay and control scheme feel good on mobile and I like the streamlining they’ve done to everything; for what it is, it’s quite decent. And so because of expectations of the respective platform and developer, I have slightly more positive feelings about the throwaway mobile companion game, relatively speaking! Huh!

Read this cute Borrower Au fanfic for Ouran High School Host Club and had to draw something for it. Featuring a Tiny Haruhi and Tamaki so far, it's so cute!
