Happy weekend!

LYN: I wasn’t planning to stream today but I saw that the last time I streamed was the 20th. It’s been eight days so I figured it was time. Comment: Did you come to stream because you missed us? LYN: Um... no. It’s not what I was thinking and if you hadn’t brought it up I would not have had the thought, but since you did bring it up I might as well comply. LYN: It’s been eight days since I last streamed and I don’t have much going on- tomorrow I still have to do drama shooting but that’s normal for me now- so I thought I’d come and chat. I don’t think I’ll stream too late but we’ll see. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older or what.... but around the new year always pains me. I haven't been able to get a good night’s sleep. It used to be that once I fell asleep I could sleep for 12-14 hours straight. Now I sleep a lot less. I used to be able to stay up until one or two in the morning, sometimes even three or four. But nowadays once it hits eleven or twelve I’m already SO sleepy and feel like if I don’t sleep I’ll die. I never used to get sleepy like this. But now I sleep at 12a and wake up at 5am. I look at my watch, thinking I’ve slept for a long time already but it’s only been 4 or 5 hours and I’m already “full.” It’s inexplicable. Comment: Your biological clock is messed up. LYN: It’s not that it’s messed up, I think it’s healthy now and I can’t stand it. I always tell my self that I’m still young but... it seems like nowadays I can’t help but to admit I AM getting older. I went online and started shopping for anti-aging products. True facts. Comments: Health supplements? LYN: I didn’t buy any supplements- I think having a good meal is enough. I’m not at that point yet. [...] I’ve been feeling a lot of pressure lately because of work so I want to get myself in a better condition- get my skin and body in a better condition. I heard a rumor- I don’t know if it is or not- but it said that eating avocado is good for your skin. I don’t remember where I saw it but I was thinking maybe I should buy some and give it a try. At this point it’s worthy a try. I know what avocado tastes like, since I was a chef before, but I really don’t like it. I can’t get it down. But I bought about a week’s worth and we’ll see if my skin gets any better.

LYN: I just came on here today to chat with you, so if there’s anything you want to talk about you can type it in the comments. I won’t sing today because I just came back from recording a drama OST. They told me they wanted a “heartbreaking” feeling and even sent me a clip of the drama to watch while recording. That’s my first time accepting a job like that- watching a scene and singing for it. Comment: Was it the male lead in the clip? LYN: Uh... I can’t act as a male lead yet but I can still sing the theme song for the male/female leads. Are you looking down on me??? Is it shameful to sing a song for the second lead? No. It’s all the same. Comment: If they wanted it “heartbreaking” then that means the CP has a BE (bad ending)? LYN: Not so. The part I’m singing for- they’ve probably just has some sort of misunderstanding. :p It’s just a misunderstanding. I think recording went smoothly and I know one of the actors, too, so I sent them a message telling them they’ve acted well. :) Comment: Modern or Guzhuang? LYN: Guzhuang. Comment: What drama is it? LYN: I don’t think I can reveal yet. Just wait until they announce it. LYN: I still owe a few OSTs so I’ll be recording for those soon. And the two days of New Year’s- I’m telling you now- there’ll probably be a song released on each day. From the first of the lunar month to the 15th I bet I can release one song every day. Are my song-fans happy to hear this? :D I’m kidding, though. I don’t have that many songs. But I heard that starting from then (new year’s) they’ll start releasing some of the OSTs I’ve sung. LYN: My album is done, too. But I’ll hold off releasing it until later because I don’t want them to clash (OSTs vs LYN Album). I don’t want it to be the case where there are so many songs I can’t even remember the titles, let alone the lyrics. Comment: I already can’t remember (the titles). LYN: You have to remember! If you have nothing else to do listen to my songs, remember them.

LYN: Someone’s asking when Heroes will air again. I already told you not to look forward to it. Marketing accounts didn’t even mention it. I think the only people looking forward to it are my fans or people watching my stream, YCY or ZSX’s fans, and no one else. Another group of people are the book fans; they want to see how the drama is so they can tear it apart. LYN: I already said before, that fans of the book are more strict, because they have already created their own version of the world and characters in their minds; they’ll inevitably compare the drama to their own imagination. Everyone interprets it differently. Most dramas that are adapted from novels hardly get away from novel-fans unscathed. I hope it will satisfy most of them, though. As to when Heroes will air? Probably soon. LYN: We were contacted recently, asking us what we’ve got going on. Because we have to start doing commercials. I don’t know because I rarely watch drams, but you know how you’re watching and suddenly in the middle they’ll insert a commercial? I’m not sure but based on this alone I think they’re getting ready to air it. LYN: Honestly I was really looking forward to it, but now that it’s coming up I feel a little scared. I’m scared it’ll flop. Actor’s inner feelings are not whether the drama will be reported on or not but rather whether the drama will get to air AT ALL. I remember with The Long Ballad- we had no idea when it would air; even the production company! I received a text and found out it would air in the morning of the day-of air date. As an actor, our biggest wish is for our drama to get to air in the first place. - /talks about how there’s a jinx: the more people anticipate a drama, the worse the reception of it will be. rather, the dramas that no is looking forward to are unexpectedly great. the dramas that have a rocky start or filming process turn out to be better than dramas that were shot smoothly/without a hitch./ Comment: Then, do you think the filming for Heroes and Zichuan went smoothly? LYN: Heroes was the hardest drama for me to shoot by far. I almost gave up acting because of it. Oh, no. It’s gonna be a hit. :D Comment: What about ALZ? LYN: Uh... It’s hard to say. Because it think ALZ was filmed extremely smoothly. It was extremely smooth but still... /thinks/ Nothing’s perfect. No matter what drama crew you end up in, there are always things that are not always going to go your way. But I think that those things are within the bounds of what I can handle. If we’re going by those standards then... ALZ filming did not go well. I was always unhappy after the camera stopped rolling. Why? Because it’s such a good drama but my scenes are too little. I can’t get enough! Comment: That’s right, remember while you were filming your tooth got swollen. LYN: Ey! This filming is too bad. The Long Ballad for example, really did bring me a lot of new friends but the first day of filming- my very first scene- I was kicked by a horse. I’m not joking. I wasn’t even able to act yet, and the horse kicked me. I didn’t even say ONE line. Comment: Is the horse okay? LYN: I don’t know. But I hope it’s healthy. LYN: Anyway, when nothing goes well (during filming) good things will happen (when it airs). Comment: You got hit in the nose too. LYN: That’s right! I had so many injuries while filming for The Long Ballad. I’m not saying this for pity- I think suffering some injury is normal for an actor. So, the first day on set I got kicked by a horse. Do you remember one scene- my yifu suddenly spat blood? I ran over and yelled for a carriage, and got him onto my back? I was supposed to run right out of the frame and that would cut the scene. There were these big rocks on the ground. I stepped on one and heard a crack from my ankle. There was nothing I could do so I stuck with it and ran. The director wasn’t satisfied so we ended up doing another take. I don’t remember if I bore with the pain or forgot about the pain, but we did do another take. Another time is with the arena battle- normally you pretend to get it- you have to finish the action yourself. That day I got a direct hit from one of the stunt coordinators. Another one is- I’m not here to complain, okay? I’m just sharing whether filming went smoothly or not. I’m not dissatisfied- every one of these moments is an unforgettable memory for me. Another time is when Wei Shuyu and I were fighting- he pulled my sword on me but I turned, got it back in its scabbard and knocked his hand away- do you remember that scene? With that camera angle, it’s impossible to swiftly get the sword in the scabbard in one take, so we needed two cameras- one for the turn and one for pushing the sword into the scabbard. I don’t know what happened that day- I went crazy. I wanted to look cool and do it in one take. It was a real sword, with a real metal tip. I turned and tried to get the sword into the scabbard and ended up stabbing my thumb. There’s a vein here and it started spurting blood. The laoshis on scene were stunned, too. They couldn’t stop the bleeding so we went to the hospital. I still have a scar here, it’s pretty deep. I brought it on myself. Anyway- I had a lot of injuries when filming for The Long Ballad. But, see? It wasn’t an easy filming but the drama’s reception was pretty nice. :) Comment: If that’s the case, please tell us quickly- how rocky was filming for Heroes? LYN: I’m not trying to complain- you just want me to diss it a bit, right? (So that it can have a better reception later.) You want it to do well, right? /dramatic/ Heroes, this drama- /shakes his head/ Comment: The water scene. [t/n: Ning-ge is scared of water bc he almost drowned when he was a kid.] LYN: The hardest part of Heroes was not the physical pain it’s the mental pain. The water scene, really- took a toll. Ever since that scene I swore to myself- even if it looks unprofessional- if there’s any drama that includes a water scene I would not take the role. Think about how much pain this scene brought to me. If there’s a part that requires my character to “fall into the water and struggle” I will not take it. No matter how good the drama is- I’ll have a breakdown. I can’t do it. It’s not because I’m weak, I just can’t get over it. After that scene I really broke down. LYN: I went to do the dubbing- I don’t know if it didn’t make the cut or what, but it was really unusable. I wasn’t even in the water for longer than three seconds. Since I didn’t see it while dubbing the director probably cut that part. Because even if I was struggling underwater I would have had to record something like /takes a swig of coffee, gurgles, “help me!”/ I’m not sure though, because we only dub the speaking parts and that part really had no lines. LYN: Let me think of what else I can say about it- have you seen anyone who only started filming “normal” scenes after a week in the crew? It’s normal though. Because, let me tell you, even though you watch a drama starting from E1 all the way through the end, when filming for a drama we may start filming from the middle or even start from the finale. We don’t film in order. In one day we could film five or six different episodes worth of content. [t/n: I THINK this role is... a villain. :) So with this in mind, he has to go back and forth between “villain” and “hero” depending on what scenes they have to film that day.] Comment: Why? LYN: There are two reasons. The first and most important reason is time. There’s no way the drama crew can go (in order) to the multiple locations is takes for a single section of the drama. It takes almost three hours just to move equipment. If we’re moving location every scene it will waste no small amount of time. So every scene that takes place in a single location is filmed within a certain amount of days. Once we finish with that location, we move on to the next and film all the scenes that need to take place there. The second reason is the actor’s time. For important characters, they’re pretty much spending all their time in Hengdian. But there are those who cameo or have small supporting roles, so we film all of their scenes first and let them go so they can pick up other jobs. LYN: I only started filming normally after a week in the crew. This character is difficult to handle and I had a lot of pressure. I understand the crew though, because there may be a couple dozen or even hundreds of different drama crews all fighting for the same space in Hengdian. The schedule is tight. I had a lot of pressure but there’s no helping it. You have to film. Comment: Did the fight scenes give you pressure? LYN: Actually fight scenes are not bad. You just have to have the guts. You have to tell yourself you’re not afraid of dying and then you’ll be able to complete the scene well. On the other hand the scenes with long dialogue you can’t necessarily grit your teeth and power through. Comment: The wedding scene. LYN: Not that one. It’s a scene where I talk to myself, but I can’t reveal what it’s about. When I saw that scene in the script- it’s a long wall of text- talking to myself. I felt a lot of pressure. I spent a few days prior getting to know that scene and familiarizing myself with it. I had only just gotten into the crew and wasn’t familiar with the director or other actors yet, either. I was afraid they would look down on me, since I am a singer after all. But after that day... :) They ended up being satisfied with my work. LYN: The scriptwriter- we had dinner after work one day- I think they probably had a bit much to drink, or rather drank to the point of happiness. They came to me and said, “LYN. You know, when I wrote that scene I really didn’t know how it would come out on camera.” I asked, “Laoshi- were you just bullsh*tting it (when writing), then?” They said, “No. When I wrote it I had an image in mind but I just didn’t know how the actor would interpret it. But after you acted... you brought my image to life. Really, not bad.” I didn’t fall for it though. I only know that I completed the scene (but not necessarily well); I had a lot of pressure preparing for it. LYN: As a rookie actor I was happy to be praised by the scriptwriter though. But I also know that only I am the most aware of my own ability. To anyone out there, you have to remember- when people praise you, that’s their own opinion. Please don’t take it as a sign that you’re all that. Just like how in my fans’ eyes no matter what I do I am cute- I don’t wash my hair and that’s cute. Even if I do a performance and sing the wrong lyrics, they’ll still think I’m cool, because it proves that I’m not lip syncing. You know? You have to be self-aware. Just because other people praise you doesn’t mean that you are really as good as they say. You have to know yourself. LYN: Even if I’m performing one day and I sing the wrong lyrics, my fans will say the captions are wrong. “My Ning-ge is right because that’s his interpretation of the song but we take no responsibility for the captions. They were input wrong.” /I/ can’t say, “Oh, yes, The captions are wrong.” I KNOW WHAT I DID. Comment: Ning-ge, you didn’t sing wrong. You took the moment to make your own arrangement. LYN: I have no right to change someone else’s song. I will have purely sung incorrectly. It’s my fault entirely.

I quite like children, and I think that they’re fun because 童言无忌 (children’s words carry no harm). In the rehearsals I got on stage and the children’s teacher came and said, “Gather round, now. Your favorite Yuning-gege is here.” You know children- if there’s no teacher around then they’ll be climbing up and down the stage. I got there and a few were standing obediently ready to sing and the rest were crawling around. I heard what the teacher said and was thinking to myself, “There’s no need for that.” I wouldn’t be unhappy even if they called me “Yuning-shushu.” But I heard the most important words, “YOUR FAVORITE.” I got curious, though. They all got into place and I asked them if they knew me. The kids said, “We don’t. :)” LYN: ?_? That’s NORMAL. Little kids know Ultraman and My Little Pony but they might not need to know me. It’s probably the teacher who told them, “your favorite, yuning-gege.” But I think a few of the kids- their parents probably knew they would be on stage with me so they asked their kid to get some autographs out of me. So the kid asked me if I could give them an autograph and I wanted to ask back “Do you know who I am, though?” If they didn’t I would probably say, “You don’t even know me, what do you want an autograph for??” LYN: I really enjoy spending time with the kids though. When you talk to them you can really tell what their home life is like. There was a little girl, I told her we would be done quick and then she could go home and eat delicious foods. She told me, “I can’t go home yet I have to go to an event later.” You can tell her home is pretty well-off. I said, “Wow, you’re so busy?” and she replied, “Yeah!” So I asked her if she was busy because she was so pretty and she replied, “Yeah, I am pretty!” Kids are fun.

Why does my neighbor have to be a celebrity, can’t they just be an actor? The thing is, um.... I speak my opinions in my streams sometimes and if you’re too serious about it it can easily become hate-material on me but if I don’t say what’s on my mind I’ll be uncomfortable. The truth is... being an actor and being a celebrity are not the same profession. I don’t know if you understand, you probably don’t. Celebrities always show up on tv or online videos, or variety shows- they could also be an actor or singer. Actors are much simpler- acting is their job. Very many people might not know them. For example, I could be going over some lines with another actor and I offhandedly ask them how many days they’re in for. That person replied, “I’m filming three dramas right now.” If you were a celebrity filming multiple dramas at once you’d likely be criticized; people will say you’re not serious about your work. But for an actor this (filming for multiple dramas at once) is normal; there’s no way the can stay with just a single crew for four months. They just have one job after another. Some people are actors and some are celebrities. I hope I can be an actor or singer- a profession that has a bit more stability and longer shelf-life.

LYN: There are a lot of things I want to complain about but I can’t do it right now. When I’m sixty, I’ll let you know it all.

LYN: I’ve only debuted for three years but some of the people I’ve met- like ZSX- he’s so amazing! When I hang out with these people I realize that they know A LOT of people! If you’re in this industry for a long time you’ll come to know just about everyone. Comment: I don’t want to hear you talk about other people. LYN: ... Then I won’t. What do you want me to talk about? You want me to ask you where you live?? I’ll talk about anything I want to in my stream and you can’t control what I say. If you don’t want to hear it then get out and come back later. LYN: You remember that time I said that an artist I wasn’t very familiar with kept helping me out and getting recommending me for jobs? That person was Yang Zi. Another person who helps me out a lot is (Zhao) Liying-jie. She contacted me a few days ago and asked me if I had the time to join a project she was in, and she recommended me to the producers. ANOTHER person is- this was for a song. The production company found a singer for their song but it’s a duet, so they asked who the other singer wanted to work with and they recommended me. This person is Zhang Bichen. These are the people who keep helping me find work. They’re all very nice people. [..] Another person, there’s another person- Jing Tian-laoshi. It wasn’t a successful discussion but the fact is she recommended me for a drama. The producers not acknowledging me is another matter entirely. It’s not that they were hard to buy but when I was little I thought they were expensive because they’re from more southern regions. I did like to eat it as a child but... my family wasn’t in a very good position to... afford canned peaches. Maybe for new year’s. LYN: You know what I like? I watched a Korean drama called “You Who Came From the Stars”- do you know it? There was a scene- with marinated crab. I thought it looked delicious so I bought some, then later I made some for myself. [..] I’ve been.. I’ve been watching kdramas lately. I was scrolling on my phone and saw a clip but... I got sucked in. I really like the male and female leads too. I almost found myself shipping them. Comment: What drama? LYN: I’m not gonna tell you! I just want you to keep wondering what drama it is that I like, but you will never know. LYN: I watch some dramas now just because I want to see how other people act. Some things you can understand for yourself but some things you really need to observe how other people understand it. The thing I find amazing about Korean actors is that they exaggerate but it doesn’t look fake or out of place in the drama at all. Comment: So what did you watch? LYN: It was- Pinocchio (2014). It’s been awhile since it was released. Comment: So old. LYN: ?! What do you mean?? Is this drama old?? No, right? Ridiculous. Comment: I watched that in middle school. This industry, just like your normal work, all depends on connections. The reason why I don’t appear on many variety shows, honestly, is because I don’t know most of the people (in the industry)- I haven’t been around long enough (for them to think of him for an appearance). So please don’t think I’m able to get any sort of work I want- the truth is that the other party (producers) don’t really want me, and I don’t really want to go. It’s only been a few years since my debut, and I don’t particularly have an “explosive” work yet. The people who are very popular now may have become so because of one show or drama that “exploded” but I.. I’m not explosive yet. And I don’t want to be- I’m very comfortable where I am right now. Comment: Can you give any interview tips? LYN: When interviewing for a company? Ok. When you’re going to an interview, you’re going to be fighting with a lot of other people for the same job. Whatever you do, you need to leave an impression so you’ll have a chance to succeed. When you’re at your interview and you meet the person who will be interviewing you- you need to go and give them a slap. And then run. Go home. If they give you a call then that means they remembered you. If they don’t contact you, never return to that company again. LYN: That’s a joke. I don’t have any interview tips for you because I’ve never been to an interview myself. For this, you’ll have to think about it yourself.

Comment: Can you practice enough to raise your vocal range? LYN: What a pro question. Are you also a singer? Tell me, who are you? Singers are separated into low-mid-high range men/women (bass-baritone-tenor-alto-soprano). Each person has their own vocal range. I’m a baritone. Can’t you tell? You can practice the higher ranges but there’s a limit. You can improve but there’s a limit (physically).

Comment: What happens if you can’t remember your lines? LYN: Are you also in the same business? Are you an actor? Tell me your name. People have to have an understanding of themselves. If you know that you won’t be able to remember your lines, you have to start practicing beforehand. There’s nothing you can’t remember. If one day prior does’t work, try two days, three days, one week, one year. It just depends on whether you WANT to remember or not.

Comment: How can I make my voice sound good? LYN: This, I really do not know. If I don’t understand enough of the topic I don’t dare to speak nonsense. How can you make your voice sound good? I think this can be practiced, too. Like announcers all have the same type of tone/intonation- but their voices are not all the same. I believe they needed to learn.

Comment: Have you been trained in acting? LYN: This is probably a new friend. Since my first drama- so far I’ve filmed HBY, UN, TLB, Heroes, ZC, ALZ, FSH- I’ve filmed seven things so far. For each one of them I have been with an acting coach; It’s been the same coach since UN. People have asked me, now that I’ve filmed so many, why I still need a coach. It’s because I have a responsibility to the drama crew to uphold. I also have to be accountable for myself. LYN: Also- I’m a singer! I’ve had the great privilege to have the opportunity to act so having an acting coach with me is not shameful. It’s normal! It shows the drama crew that I am holding myself accountable as well. LYN: But as for professional training- you will find that you actually don’t start learning until you are actually on the job. You may “’learn” everything in school but you don’t actually start the real “’learning” until you start experiencing/doing the work. I don’t know if it’s the same for acting, because I’ve never actually taken acting classes. But I think that you really learn a lot of things through trial and error. Of course, the basics are also very important and necessary; for me, who has none of the basics, it’s enough for me to make up my time (with a coach & through trial and error).

Comment: Do you have any tricks for crying scenes? LYN: /thinks for a long time without saying anything/ LYN: I can only say that now when I watch dramas I can tell which actors are using fake tears. ... But I can’t tell you who. LYN: I think you can tell, too. Some people, when you watch them cry, it will move you. Others could be breaking down in tears but you don’t feel a thing. Why do you think that is? LYN: I’m not trying to point out anyone in particular. But I believe there’s a difference between being ABLE to act and acting WELL. I’M not even ABLE to act yet, so I still have a long way to go. Comment: I’ve seen a lot of actors can say a lot with just a look. LYN: I’ve seen a lot of... “killer stare” clips. People have even made some of me. What is a “killer stare”? You’ll find that this expression is used to represent a single look/action. /gives examples/ What is this nonsense?? Why did you include me in there? My stares can’t kill anyone. [..] I think a REAL “killer stare” is when the actor has no real emotion or is doing anything special with their eyes but you can tell their intentions with just a look in their eyes. Comment: Because your eyes are small, so you can’t “kill” anyone. LYN: ! What do you mean? I think having small eyes is a good thing. It’s just that your expressions may not be as obvious as those with bigger eyes. I need to be more reserved (micro-expressions). My acting is suited for- when you download the video- you need to zoom in to see.

Comment: Is there a difference between shooting for a movie and shooting a drama? LYN: I need to say- even though I’ve cameo-d in a movie, I haven’t really shot one before. It’s actually two different circles. Only if you have connections to people in the movie industry, will you be able to film a movie. The other situation is if you’re VERY popular. But movies and dramas are quite different. Think about it- Using four months to film a one and a half hour movie versus filming a 48-50 episode drama. You tell me where the difference is. LYN: There are times when you think you can do a take better, but the truth of it is there isn’t enough time for the crew. If it’s acceptable and there’s enough there to make the cut then you’re moving on to the next scene. Comment: Than the director is not responsible enough. LYN: It’s really not the director’s fault. I’ve heard too many cases where after a couple months some directors even get fired. Why? They’re filming too slowly. They’re TOO serious (not moving fast enough for the production company). Who can you blame?

LYN: I’ve also seen comments where you’re complaining about why the fresh/rookie actors are playing a certain role, and not a veteran actor. I’ll tell you. It’s because of you. If you REALLY liked a certain actor- you will have watched EVERY movie, EVERY drama they’ve acted in. Have you? Probably not. If you really like an actor then you have to support everything they are in, and maybe one day they’ll have the chance (to play in a role you want them to). If you can’t do it then you have no one else to blame. [..] There’s really no need to use veteran actors as an excuse to shun rookie ones.

Comment: How many sets of equipment have you given out? LYN: The number doesn’t matter- what matters is that they’re coming to weibo to stream. In the end I’ll save all the receipts and have weibo reimburse me. XD Even IF weibo doesn’t reimburse me! - I actually haven’t thought of the result of that. a very necessary guide to SF9

so. let’s talk about these underrated kings. be prepared for rambling. I just love them too much. my favorite boys, 10/10 would recommend stanning them.

some basic information

9 members (5 vocals, 4 rappers, 9 dancers and 9 visuals just stating the facts)

SF9 stands for Sensational Feeling 9

debuted on October 5, 2016 with Fanfare (still a BOP)

currently under FNC Entertainment and actually their first male dance group

their official fandom name is Fantasy (such a good name, honestly) and the official color is Fantasia Hologram (aka the p r e t t i e s t).

debuted after winning a survival show called Dance or Band (they participated as the dance team; the band team debuted as Honeyst in 2017)

7 mini albums so far with RPM being their latest comeback

Youngbin

Kim Youngbin, born on November 23, 1993

LeaderBin aka the Dad™

very charismatic, be prepared for some really intense eye contact (two words: stage presence)

rapper (highest rapping voice out of the four of them)

D A N C E R (a former 1MILLION dance studio trainee), so he‘s obviously 1/3 of sf9′s extremely talented dance line

also 1/3 of hyung line

cutest eye-smile (so soft) + cutest giggle™

rocked his red hair and looks amazing with slightly curled hair (do not fight me on this)

is tattooed (very p r e t t y)

threatens everyone’s bias at least once

gives amazing (and unnecessary long) pep talks together with Jaeyoon (just let the other boys sleep, please)

gazes so, so fondly at all his members in pretty much every video (no, I will NOT cry)

Jaeyoon is his roommate and secret wife.

Inseong

Kim Inseong, born on July 12, 1993

the oldest (not mentally) aka the Grandpa™

main vocal (those HIGH NOTES, damn). extremely steady voice.

unique beauty. looks a bit like a desert fox (according to himself and everyone with a pair of functioning eyes).

seems a bit shy and quiet at first. don’t be fooled. he is loud and will come for you.

Dawon

Lee Sanghyuk, born on July 24, 1995

oh boy... such a bundle of utter chaos.

hear something loud and annoying in the background? it’s probably (most definitely) Dawon (helped by the other 2/3 of extra line)

a unique and beautiful voice (he needs more lines or else I’ll throw hands) - rapping, singing, screaming, he can do it all.

best dancer, period. his entire body is probably made out of water. such. fluid. moves. - 2/3 of dance line, often in charge of choreographies.

the literal Sun™, his smile has healing properties.

has great hair and pushes it back a lot during his dance moves

a flower boy (literally. wanted to become a florist before debuting as an idol)

has literally the best gummy smile which he used to hide behind his hands (but his hyungs encouraged him so much and now he smiles openly, I am not crying, you are)

grew up so suddenly and had long hair out of nowhere and left everyone sh o ok (should definitely be in a shampoo commercial)

composes songs. put one on SoundCloud just very recently. writes lyrics for a lot of sf9′s songs.

cried during their survival show when he got scolded for continuing to mess up the choreography and had to be hugged by Youngbin (who really is the best dad™)

1. Nickname - My name doesn’t have any nickname attached and we’re not really into nicknames here anyway so none coming from my first name. I got a few later, none really stuck. “Lef” was used for a very short while (and somehow it comes from my first name (from afar...) but people very rarely get it - I didn’t come up with this, an old school friend did), but I liked it so I now use it to sign my art and as an internet name at times. Without the meaning behind obviously lol

Current job fits that and I actually really like it, even if I’m really not enjoying being thrown into the turmoil without anything or anyone helping me or telling me if what I do is good enough or not... anxiety is constantly up the roof.

12. Wearing - yesterday’s outfit - thick black tights, big woolen socks, flowery vintage tunic dress (mostly black with orange, yellow, green and blue flowers on it) and black jumper, with 10-eye Docs. I feel quite cool honestly.

13. Favourite songs - silly question. Okay it’s november the weather is perfect for this and I wish you all started listening to Ommadawn Pt 1 by Mike Oldfield already.

14. Instruments - I used to be able to play guitar (poorly), recorded an EP as a bass player (I was shit), I can still get some recognizable songs out of a harmonica. I sing, now, though. And contrary to the rest I think I’m pretty okay at it ? If you ask nicely in DM I can maybe find a bad recording of that lol

15. Random fact - Me and my HUSBAND (haha) sometimes communicate only by making high pitched stupid noises. It works.

16. Aesthetic - brown, beige and military green colours, jeans, big boots, 40+ years old leather stuff (bags, jackets, belts,... all you can think of), animal skulls, old glassware, pretty rocks, pins, vanilla and cinnamon or wild berries smell.

rip that’s all I write too... tbh I used to write original fiction before but I find myself much less constricted by fanfic? I can explore the characters here more than I can in original fiction where worldbuilding takes most effort

oh definitely paper! if I could I’d buy printed out fanfic too!

I was about 12 I think? it all started with harry potter, like everything else has, and I regret not a second of it!

sometimes when i get very excited about what i’m writing i’ll tell my fandom friends about the specific AU that i’m writing about but in terms of reading the full length fic, i don’t have anyone that i let read before anyone else. it’ll be on ao3 for everyone at the same time.

my desk, my pc. I can write on my phone but I like to edit as I go and it’s hard to do on the phone.

oh wow ok this is a difficult one bc I don’t think I even have a wip 7 pages long //sweats let me see... aha, okay, I found one! from back in march when I asked people to send me over some numbers for one of those writing memes and @theexitgarden I believe (??) sent me the prompt “I don’t think anyone could be as lovely as you” for victuuri and I kind of got a blind!victor au from it?? wELP here’s the fragment of it:

First surgery: okAY so like i've had 2 procedures done on my eyes lmaooo like (1) when i was a smol beb of like 1 yr old i rolled off my bed aaaannnnddd the corner of my eye hit the edge of the sharp corner of the bedside table!!! and then y1ke$ things got ugly loll (((yes, i wuz dum + clumsy since the day i popped from the womb))) its all stitched up now and i hav a tinie tinie scar aslkdgs okay and (2) there was something weird abt my tearducts LOL so u know when u get sad nd stuff ur nose gets runny and u sniff a lot??? well like that wasn't the case for me bc the passage way from my eyes to my nose was completely blocked off,,,,, which resulted in me lookin like i was full blown cryin like every 2 seconds... like if i kept my eyes open for too long my eyes would get watery and tears would flow out LMAO ,,,, i looked like i just never stopped crying,,, but it was just my eyes were just ALWAYS WATERING sdlgjsdif damn u have no idea after the procedure i was like 'do ppl live like this??? not having to wipe tears every 0.2 sec??? oh my god,,, i am livin THE LIFE'

Game Review - Risk of Rain 2 - Early Access (2019)

A plunge into another dimension of roguelike action with ever electric music and infinite hardships – now in Early Access.

Please note that this review represents my thoughts on the game, based on its initial patch on Steam Early Access. Everything mentioned may and will probably be subject to change in future versions of the game and should be taken as simply a matter of the current state of the game. I will endeavor to follow up this review with and errata and final review of the game upon full release, which is announced to be in about 12 months. Thank you.

Risk of Rain 2 released on Steam Early Access just a few days ago with little to no fanfare beyond the mention of the initial release window of Q1 2019, announced by developer Hopoo Games late last year. However, the game is already boasting massive player numbers, running at about 70,000+ concurrent players on March 30th, 2019 (according to SteamSpy); with hundreds of Twitch broadcasts, peaking at around 28,000+ viewers.

One could say it is a good time to be a Risk of Rain fan, as Hopoo Games’ partnership with Gearbox Publishing has aided the game in reaching a wider audience than the original.

Instead of being somewhat barred behind requirements of technical knowledge, the addition of Steamworks multiplayer, compared to the somewhat archaic peer-to-peer multiplayer of the original, now allows players to experience its co-op roguelike action with ease. That no doubt will play a massive part in Risk of Rain 2’s success among its playerbase, as it will move the game from the original’s frantic singleplayer roguelike chaos to even greater and more frantic roguelike chaos, which one can now share with friends or other players around the world via quickplay lobbies.

The initial 48 hour sales period also featured a promotional “buy one, get one free” deal, which I may add was a brilliant way to emphasize the new multiplayer suite, allowing you to not only purchase the game at a reduced cost, but also gift a copy to a friend, so that one may join the game’s co-op experience and be acquainted with Risk of Rain 2 without the need for an initial financial investment. This however lead to what I can only describe as a lot of ‘e-begging’, as my dives into the Risk of Rain community on Twitter and on the game’s official Discord server uncovered an incredible amount of people just sitting in wait for loose copies of the game. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing; however, it pollutes the conversation around the game, as even I was so helpfully instructed in the replies of my tweets containing my first impressions for the game, that I should be aware that I own an additional copy and that it would be lovely if I were to trade it for some of their other Steam games or simply charitably donate it to them. This however should not be seen as the fault of the developers or publishers, as they cannot be responsible for the actions of the amorphous mass that is the ‘not-even really-the-game’s-playerbase-but-really-want-to-be’. My reason for pointing this out is simply as a word of warning on the effect of such promotional deals, as I believe that would usually not be talked about and I have seen many members of the community express their disdain for such beseechment.

So far, my issues with the multiplayer are that due to the nature of quickplay, I am often put into groups with people that are geographically far enough from me as to create massive amounts of latency, which for an action roguelike is usually fatal, as most shots appear to miss, even if standing right next to an enemy. Chests and lunar coins appear to take almost 30 seconds to open or pick up – by which usually someone else has already come and picked them up, leaving you with little to no items and more likely to be waiting out the next teleporter event as a spectator.

But, I digress – let us talk about the elephant in the room:

Risk of Rain is now in 3D. A jarring shift from the pixel-art platforming of the original to fully three-dimensional flat-shaded environments, switching out the GameMaker engine for Unity. For those of us who have been following Hopoo’s blog on Tumblr, seeing his experiments with 3D modeling, the announcement that Risk of Rain 2 would be in 3D came as something of an “aha” moment. That said, the core concepts of the series translate very well, leading many to jokingly say that Risk of Rain 2 has “more depth” than the original.

Items you pick up during gameplay now even display on your character, making the end result of your runs look visually distinct from how you began, reflecting the increase in power and your new abilities; a features that was long talked about, I believe ever since the original game came out.

The addition of full mouse aim and 360-degree movement have increased the skill cap of the game tremendously: as well as the difficulty of now having to aim, enemies can now sneak up on you, or attack you from above, or below, or anywhere really. Most of the enemies from the original make a return, but have changed from simply making melee attacks, to appropriating projectiles and lasers into their arsenals, making the predominant strategy in the original of “just jump and shoot” into something that requires a bit more thought and involves some calculated risk. So pray to Hopoo you don’t get c l a p p e d by the Magma Worm.

But it is not only the enemies who have adapted: The playable characters, or “survivors”, have been retooled for the new gameplay, featuring some of their most memorable skills and abilities along with some new ones. The one that sticks out in my mind is The Huntress’ new ability, which launches her into the air, raining armor-shredding arrows in a small circle on the ground, which replaces her explosive incendiary bolt from the original.

The starting lineup of characters features the iconic Commando, a HAN-D type robot named MUL-T, Huntress, Mercenary, Engineer and an entirely new class, named the Artificer, which I am yet to unlock, but I have a hunch on how to do so.

As it stands, one of the main complaints that people have gameplay-wise is the newfound difficulty in finding the teleporter, which now can hide in all sorts of nooks and crannies. However, I believe this is mostly due to the to the lack of tutorialization, as the difference between aimlessly wandering for 10-30 minutes and finding it almost immediately, came when someone pointed out that there are unique particle effects surrounding the teleporter, which are colored brightly orange/red, but are not immediately noticeable if you don’t know what to look for. I suppose that is a communication issue, but in their latest blog post Hopoo Games have noted the problem and will be working on making exploration easier.

Another new addition to Risk of Rain 2 is Prismatic Trials, which can be considered something akin to a weekly challenge, where everyone plays on the same seed, meaning that all items and teleporters are in the same place. In addition, there are mutators, such as more gold at the very start of the game or the sequence of levels becomes random, ensuring that each week is different from the last and makes it different from the default game experience. The end goal is to just beat the game, as you usually do, but with the added incentive of getting a faster time than everyone else. Currently there is no reward for being among the top players for the week, but the wording on the menu indicates that in the future there may be something beyond just bragging rights.

On another note, the music for the game, provided by the wonderful and talented Chris Christodoulou, who previously worked with Hopoo games on the original Risk of Rain and Deadbolt, has succeeded yet again to provide the haunting and alien atmosphere of the game, mixing ambient synth soundscapes with hard-hitting distorted guitars and bass. The track “Evapotranspiration”, featured in the first trailer for the game encapsulates this the best in my opinion, beginning with a somewhat celestial motif, slowly distorting as time passes and the difficulty of the game becomes higher and the action ramps up, layering on an echoey guitar and heavy drums, creating a sense of pressure, only to finish off with a bang, by adding a distorted electric guitar and a frantic semi-drum-and-bass rhythm, that sound as much out of place as exactly on signature, creating this uneasy tension.

But – real talk Chris – where the fuck is Coalescence 2? There’s creative pursuits and the need for the new and different, but you just can’t not…that tune was electric.

The so called Early Access OST is now available on Chris’ Bandcamp page for a discounted price of 4€ (or your regional equivalent) and features a total of 11 tracks. Purchase of the album is also considered a pre-order for the final album, said to be released later in 2019 (according to the PDF included with the purchase of the album). Your purchase also nets you discount codes for the original Risk of Rain soundtrack (which is amazing and you should own, if you don’t already), along with the so called Engineer Editions, featuring the sheet music, stems and other goodies for both games (the Engineer Edition for the sequel pending release, stated to be around Q1 2020).

Overall, Risk of Rain 2 looks and feels like a worthy successor for the franchise. The new 3D gameplay and visuals may alienate some of the fans of the original, but I believe that most will agree, that as of its current state, Risk of Rain 2 shows massive potential and will probably stand as an example of sequels done right. The new art style is appealing (even though there is something to miss in the pixel art of the original), the animations are fluid, the landscapes and level designs are diverse and colorful, the music is more of what was great before and more nuanced than its predecessor’s, the gameplay is more action-packed and difficult than ever. The issues with the game are not on the core level and will probably be fixed in future content updates. Risk of Rain 2 has something for both fans of the original and newcomers alike and with the promised future content updates, featuring more survivors, items, enemies, bosses and levels, one could expect hours of fun gameplay upon release. Highly recommended.
