i'll be so honest with you, i was inspired to watch may december because i am a todd haynes stan first (all my i'm not there (multi-actor bob dylan biopic) girlies say amen), riverdale stan second (all my reggie mantle girlies say amen) and a human third. and i had been putting it off for AGES so i figured hey it's a saturday afternoon and why not

and i loved it! i thought it was horrifying and disturbing and a psychohorror through the lens of a lifetime movie and i do actually remember the broey deschanel brouhaha on twitter at that time. i definitely agree that it's a melodrama (in another life i could have seen someone like late-career joan crawford play julianne moore's role which, if you know anything about crawford and i'm sure you do, wouldn't that have been WILD!!!) and i think it's fair to classify it as camp too.

also, i don't know where people are pulling this misread of camp that it's another subset of irony when camp is camp because it wholeheartedly believes in itself and i think may december wholeheartedly believes in itself.

from that insane musical sting when gracie is like, "i don't think we have enough hot dogs" that fucking movie is grabbing you by the throat and is like you're not going nowhere, bitch. sit down. strap in.

i could write a full thesis on why the poisonous deus ex machina of ummm so that just happened! humor has left a lot of audiences incapable of dealing with humor beats in weird, uncomfortable places like in a story like may december. and, understandable! i think i'm still trying to grow out of it in my writing sometimes.

but it reminded me a lot of husbands and a woman under the influence by john cassavetes actually, in the way the humor was so effortlessly dropped in in the maelstrom of weirdness and sadness and trauma.

oct 10 | this is an old photo because today has been intense. I woke up 5 for a 7am flight across the country for work. It was a five-hour flight so I got myself a coffee, put my headphones on and managed to get 1500/2000 words drafted for one of my essays due soon. Buuuut then I had to work all day and do some groceries and hit the gym before it got too late. So I haven't done anymore reading or drafting but that's enough progress for today right?

“That came out wrong”

It was a single rose, red with passion, full of love. It was a gift, a confession, a sign of affection. The red rose was given to Kuroo with such a gentle gesture, the contrast to the giver made his heart beat faster.

Now, Bokuto was nervous, the first he had been in a while. Giving the rose to Kuroo took him weeks of building self confidence and annoying Konoha, but finally the time came. With the rose being happily received, he finally opened his mouth and spoke, “I think... I think you love me...”

Kuroo’s eyes widened, his face slowly matching shades with his gift. It took Bokuto a while until he realized this reaction was because of him. Quickly, thinking about what he said Bo realized and suddenly blurt out “THAT CAME OUT WRONG!!” With flustered movements and equally reddening face, Bo grabs Kuroo’s hands and repeats “WHAT I MEANT TO SAY IS- I think I love you... Will you go out with me??”

Immediately he drops Kuroo’s hands, his own hand nervously reaching towards the back of his neck. Freaking out, he thinks of stupid thoughts and starts to shift slightly. Out of his awkwardness and slow nervous breakdown he heard a snicker. It was small and then suddenly grew, loud and happy, he looked up and saw Kuroo was laughing. Feeling better Bokuto started to laugh with him. After the burst of laughter Kuroo looked at Bokuto in the eyes and spoke in response “Yeah, I’d love to.”

But ultimately he had given the hangman the decree, and now here they stand in the oppressive heat and stench of King’s Landing, a crowd gathered beneath the gallows crowing and shouting, Rhaegar himself reading out their list of crimes in a detached monotony. The slack in the rope allows her enough room to take two steps towards Arthur, and he does the same. The hangman either does not notice or doesn’t care.

“Will you find me in the next life?” she asks him, as Rhaegar finishes his recitation and motions to the executioner.

“Always,” he swears. “I will always find you.”

He kisses her, desperate, and then they fall.
