Top Surgery: What Really Happens pt3 -Recovery
I’m on day 4 of recovery, and it’s been a lot of trial and error as to what works and what doesn’t. Like I said in part 1 and part 2, there’s no one solution, so try to anticipate what works for you but be ready to adapt if it doesn’t. I was pleasantly surprised to have over prepared because my pain level is quite low, but that seems to be the exception not the rule. A lot of the supplies mentioned here overlaps with what I said in part 1, this guide is about logistics.
Getting Ready - Day Of - Drains
-Plan to be sleeping, a lot. I get pretty down on myself when I sleep in, because it makes me feel like I’m not being productive, but what’s productive in the days after surgery is taking care of yourself.
Don’t expect to be back to normal within a few days. The way my surgeon broke it down was this:
1 week post op you’re back to 50%
2 weeks post op, you’re back to 80%
4 weeks post op, you’re back to full capacity.
This is a generalization of course, but recovery starts slowing down after week 2, which is why it’s so important to rest up during the first few weeks (especially because that’s when you take time off) You also have to get used to sleeping on your back, which I don’t think anyone actually does naturally. Weighted blankets are super nice for this if you have one, since it keeps you from tossing and turning. I have to take sleep meds anyways, but the pain killers they give you also knock you out.
-Speaking of meds... This was probably what I was the least informed on going into surgery.
This is my full list of medications and side effects that I’ve experienced. Asterisks next to what I was prescribed, I’ve linked to the drugs.com site for more information side effects and general info.
*Oxycodone- 5mg: as needed, every 6 hrs (painkiller)
Reminder that these are opiates, and appropriate caution should be taken. These made me particularly sleepy, and constipated. They also mess with your eyes, I have 20/20 vision but for the first time in my life I understood what it was like to be far-sighted.
*Cefadroxil- 500mg: every 12 hrs (antibiotic)
Obviously it’s important to eat in general while recovering, but also, antibiotics are the only mandatory medication and trying to take them on an empty stomach makes you super nauseous.
*Ondansetron- 4 mg: as needed , every 8 hrs (anti-nausea)
This was substituted for Zofran, not entirely sure why but I think it was something about interactions with other drugs.
Generic acetaminophen- 500mg, as needed every 6 hrs (tylenol)
You cannot have Aspirin, or any over the counter NSAID. They thin the blood and promote excessive bleeding. Aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Excedrin, and Advil are all off limits.
Sennosides- 15mg- as needed (laxatives)
In addition to constipation from other side effects, it’s also just harder in general to get it out because of how sore your muscles will be. There’s no shame in it, it happens to the best of us.
Diphenhydramine- 50mg- 1 a day (sleep aid) 
-Altered mobility, what’s up with that? There are going to have to be some life style changes you make to enable getting around your space.
This is my set up:

Laptop, water, trash can, meds and extra supplies all within reach
Extra pillows to support my back
Lamp with a on/off button extension cord. I think it was originally for christmas trees but it’s nice to not have to reach up and turn the knob
Power strip with chargers
I’m sleeping on the couch because it’s 1. Closer to the bathroom and 2. My actual bed is a loft which isn’t exactly surgery friendly.
I covered the couch cushion in an extra sheet to make it less scratchy and in case of any leakage (There hasn’t been any though)
The name of the game is accessibility. I’ve been lucky to be able to move around and be up and about, but it’s still better to have everything within arms reach. The only issue I’ve run into with my set up is that sitting up is pretty difficult. Particularly with how wide this couch is, it’s hard to maneuver myself up and out
Also, get used to squatting down to pick things up, instead of leaning over. When you squat, you aren’t engaging your torso at all to reach something, which is ideal here.
Try and stick to chairs that have some sort of back support. I’m used to sitting on stools in my work area and that’s just not sustainable after surgery.
-Hygeine Full stop, you’re going to have to be gross for awhile. This (I suspect) is also why they ask you to go off hormones for awhile before surgery, because I’m definitely a lot less sweaty and gross than I would be otherwise.
You can’t shower until you get your drains out, and the ok from your doctor. This is to reduce the risk of infection and to keep soap out of your sutures. Shower gel is pretty much a no until everything is healed, unless it’s like ultra-sensitive, and unscented.(Double check with your doctor though) My boyfriend came over two days ago to sponge me down and wash my hair. Bar soap works well, because it’s easier to control where the soap goes, and it’s more sustainable. 
Do not try and bathe alone. Period. It’s not worth the trouble or pain, and you run the risk of getting things in your sutures
Washing your hair is going to be a bit of a debacle. If you have longer hair, brushing it regularly will help distribute the natural oils and help prevent them from building up. I personally don’t like dry shampoo, but others swear by it, so worth a shot. I’ve also talked to people who treated themselves to a salon visit, to get their hair professionally washed which also sounds lovely. My boyfriend and I managed with me leaning over the edge of the tub and him pouring water over my head. The important thing is to keep soap from running down to your chest.
For me, washing my face is really important to feeling clean. My skin is naturally oily, and I had to adapt my routine a bit, because my normal method is splashing a lot of water on my face. I’ve been learning to take the more civilized route and using a damp cloth to wash off the cleanser, like probably everyone else was already doing :P
I’ve seen a lot of people recommending wet wipes, to at least pull some of the gross off, and if that works for you go for it. I’ve only used them when I take off my compression vest to get some of the oil off of my chest gently.
-Your new chest Other surgeons wrap their patients up differently, but the only rule for me was not to wash the area, and that I had to have the vest on while I slept. Fingers crossed tumblr doesn’t nerf this one but this is what my situation looks like.

The yellow sponge things are sewn on top of my nipple grafts to keep them in place, and then there are strips of medical tape holding the sutures together. Because they’re sewn to my body, I don’t have to worry about them shifting around, but nudging them even a little bit really hurts. The area on my chest went from super sensitive, to itchy and tender, to itchy and numb, to numb and tender. All of your nerves are either completely fried or severed, so even the most delicate sensations can feel really uncomfortable. My chest wasn’t ever particularly sensitive before surgery, so it’s weird being sensitive (but also not?) now.
When the compression vest is closed, I just have a couple layers of gauze pads on top of the stitches to keep them protected. I don’t really have any bandages, although I’m pretty sure that’s not the standard. The compression helps everything fuse back together correctly and squeezes out the fluids into the drains. (I’m making a post on that soon, I’m waiting to get my drains out first.)
I’ve left my vest unbuckled the past couple days to get some room to breathe, but I kept it closed the first 3 days and that seems to really help with minimizing the drainage. (The less drainage the better)
EDIT: I took my first shower in a week here’s my advice for that
Showers- As relieving as it is, you do still need to take some precautions. My shower is a stall with a fixed shower head, if you have a removable one then you’re in good shape- just get someone to get it down for you first. (No reaching over your head!)
- If your nipple grafts are still healing (which they probably will be if you got them), I highly recommend “transparent dressing covers”. Mine came in the box of extra gauze I got from CVS, but an overlarge water proof bandaid will probably do as well. They’re essentially just cling wrap (saran wrap w/e) for injuries. Theoretically you couple put them over the whole cuts? Imo that’s more trouble than it’s worth, you really can’t feel anything- but do what makes you comfortable.
-As always, different instructions for different procedures etc etc- the goal is to keep soap away from the incisions. Water is ok, but I was trying to avoid that as much as I could too. The good news is that all of the nerves are severed, so the discomfort isn’t as bad as getting a normal cut wet in the shower
- This took some experimenting, but the optimal position for me was back to the wall the dials are on. That way you can lean over (from the waist not the chest!) to get your hair in the water, without risking it dripping onto you. That being said, I have pretty thick, med length hair, so adjust as needed.
- I’ve been trying to switch to bar soap anyways, because it’s more sustainable, but personally it worked well for me. (Definitely make sure you can get a good grip on it though, pain killers can make you clumsy and it’s a bitch to crouch down to get it if it drops) My instructions were specifically to keep shower gel away from the incisions, so I just used bar soap.
- I didn’t do this, but retrospectively, keeping a clean sponge or a wet cloth on hand to get your arm pits would be pretty choice. Since you can’t lift your arms and in trying to keep soap away from your chest, it’s hard to get your under arms damp enough to get soap on, and then harder to rinse out.
- Getting out of the shower, make sure you have towels in easy reach. I’m pretty vigorous trying to dry off, because I hate the feeling of being wet, so I had to consciously slow myself down. Drying your hair goes more or less the same way as washing it, bending from the waist. There’s probably another method (getting someone else to help you ideally lmao) but because your can only really move your fore arms, this is the only thing I’ve been able to find that brings everything within reach.
- If you have a hair dryer, it works wonders for drying off hard-to-reach places. I was having a hard time getting my back fully dry, but pop that baby on and your warm and dry in seconds.

im in canada (very west coast), seriously considering that i want to start hrt and change my gender, but im very nervous about telling my job managers. what should i say when i do? im not scared of their reaction, just nervous of how to approach it.
Hello from the same general area! I’m gonna say start with the Trans Rights BC section on employment rights even if you think your employer won’t react badly, because it gives you legal backup. The info in this link is largely up to date, with the exception of the VRR case as they’ve since been told to shape up or lose city funding, but unless you work for them directly that likely doesn’t impact you. What is key to note is that you have a legal right to have your name, gender, and pronouns respected in the workplace, even if you haven’t legally changed your name or marker. If something does go poorly and you’re being harrassed or discriminated against, there are also legal help resources on this page that are either free or very low cost. The HRC in particular are good and helpful people.
In terms of actually approaching this, I think it would be helpful for you to come equipped with resources for your managers. I link people to Trans Care BC all the time because they have some really nice 101-style explanations written for laypeople. There’s also this guide, which is intended for people in Public Services, but which may be useful for you (I’ve linked directly to the part about transitioning at work).
I don’t know what your workplace actually is, so some details here may not be applicable. I do think that it would be the least anxiety-provoking for you to either tell all your managers at the same time or speak to a single person whose job it is to handle communication between employees and managers—basically, go as high up the chain of command as would be appropriate. If you work somewhere with an HR department, you can talk to them first; their job is to make sure the company isn’t doing anything illegal or inappropriate by discriminating against you, and they should be able to help you navigate “spreading the news” to your managers and coworkers.
If you don’t have HR, you’ll probably have to approach your managers directly, but in my experience people are lot more likely to react positively if you approach it as if you’re asking for their collaboration. They don’t have a say in your gender, obviously, but you’re essentially asking for their help in navigating changing your gender/pronouns(?) in the workplace, and giving them a heads-up that you might start to look physically different over a period of several months. There isn’t really a way around saying “I’m transgender” out loud with your mouth (unless you do this via email/text, which is also a valid option, and highly recommended if you think there’s a chance of backlash), but it’s probably best to keep it to simple, actionable statements: “Hey [manager], thanks for talking with me. I wanted to both give you a heads-up and ask for your help. I’m transgender, and I would really like to be able to go by my new name and pronouns in the workplace. Can you help me with [getting a new nametag/putting my name on the schedule]?”. Gauge their reaction from there, and then say something like “Thank you—the heads-up part is that I’m starting hormone therapy here soon, so [my voice might drop/I might look a little different] over the next few months. I don’t anticipate this being a problem with customers or coworkers, but I didn’t want to spring it on you or anything.”
You don’t really have to apologize for any of this—and it’s not your job to personally shepherd them through their feelings about trans people. You’re just giving them information they need to make you comfortable in the workplace. You can suggest websites/resources to them if they ask, though you’ll likely still have to do a bit of 101-what-does-transgender-mean if your managers have never had cause to think about it very hard before. What you’re not doing is opening yourself up for an argument. They cannot tell you not to go on hormones or that you’re not “allowed” to transition socially, because that is bonkers illegal here and also none of their business. I’m not trying to freak you out, and I trust your assessment of their possible reactions, I’ve just had bad experiences with employers here before and would rather overprepare than underprepare you.

PhD as a job
I recently reread this passage in David Graeber's _Bullshit Jobs_ (by the way, I highly recommend reading the book):
In the spring of 2013, I unwittingly set off a very minor international sensation.
It all began when I was asked to write an essay for a new radical magazine called Strike! The editor asked if I had anything provocative that no one else would be likely to publish. I usually have one or two essay ideas like that stewing around, so I drafted one up and presented him with a brief piece entitled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs.”
The essay was based on a hunch. Everyone is familiar with those sort of jobs that don’t seem, to the outsider, to really do much of anything: HR consultants, communications coordinators, PR researchers, financial strategists, corporate lawyers, or the sort of people (very familiar in academic contexts) who spend their time staffing committees that discuss the problem of unnecessary committees. The list was seemingly endless. What, I wondered, if these jobs really are useless, and those who hold them are aware of it? Certainly you meet people now and then who seem to feel their jobs are pointless and unnecessary. Could there be anything more demoralizing than having to wake up in the morning five out of seven days of one’s adult life to perform a task that one secretly believed did not need to be performed—that was simply a waste of time or resources, or that even made the world worse? Would this not be a terrible psychic wound running across our society? Yet if so, it was one that no one ever seemed to talk about. There were plenty of surveys over whether people were happy at work. There were none, as far as I knew, about whether or not they felt their jobs had any good reason to exist.
This possibility that our society is riddled with useless jobs that no one wants to talk about did not seem inherently implausible. The subject of work is riddled with taboos. Even the fact that most people don’t like their jobs and would relish an excuse not to go to work is considered something that can’t really be admitted on TV—certainly not on the TV news, even if it might occasionally be alluded to in documentaries and stand-up comedy. I had experienced these taboos myself: I had once acted as the media liaison for an activist group that, rumor had it, was planning a civil disobedience campaign to shut down the Washington, DC, transport system as part of a protest against a global economic summit. In the days leading up to it, you could hardly go anywhere looking like an anarchist without some cheerful civil servant walking up to you and asking whether it was really true he or she wouldn’t have to go to work on Monday. Yet at the same time, TV crews managed dutifully to interview city employees—and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them were the same city employees—commenting on how terribly tragic it would be if they wouldn’t be able to get to work, since they knew that’s what it would take to get them on TV. No one seems to feel free to say what they really feel about such matters—at least in public.
It was plausible, but I didn’t really know. In a way, I wrote the piece as a kind of experiment. I was interested to see what sort of response it would elicit...

If ever an essay’s hypothesis was confirmed by its reception, this was it. “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs” produced an explosion.
It occurred to me that, just as "bullshit jobs" was taboo to discuss but of wide resonance, the same might apply to **the steps one should take to pick, perform and/or leave jobs if one has internalized that one's job or career is indeed bullshit.**
At least it seems that way in my university's PhD programs. I suspect many of my peers don't like their PhD jobs, and distinctly, many have jobs they "secretly believe [do] not need to be performed." I suspect many of those peers are actively interested in how to deal with these situations: should I leave PhD? If not and if I haven't yet chosen a boss, how should I choose? If I'm already stuck with a boss, should I switch? Should I try shirking and see what happens? Should I just keep working as I am and stop worrying about the utility of my work, which could very possibly make me happy? Will bringing in my own funding give me more negotiating power? I'll call these questions "bullshit job considerations." But it's taboo—I haven't found students talking about these questions, and almost always I'm the first one to bring up that I've even _considered_ these questions (which evokes one of a few reactions: giggles, "don't say that!" or rarely, "yeah maybe I should think about that too") before meaningful discussion ensues.
This is not to say that there aren't many students who enjoy their PhDs: it seems highly variable. On the question of the usefulness of their jobs, I suspect many students would say that they feel they're contributing to knowledge, teaching others and helping advance health and medicine.
But for those students who don't feel so positive, I think it could be very helpful to open up spaces in which to discuss what to do in reaction to those feelings, to make this area of discussion and thinking non-taboo. For example, many students entering PhD are confronted with the decision of which boss and lab to work for in their thesis research. Each PhD program, older PhD student and postdoc will recommend criteria with which to make this decision. Commonly, I've heard "Make sure your PI [principal investigator, aka boss] and you get along," or "Look for a PI has your interests at heart." I agree that these are important criteria, depending on the definition of "your interests." I think these criteria would be greatly supplemented by "Look for a PI who gives you ample free time," "Look for a PI and lab that don't believe in 'work as an end and meaning in itself' (Graeber), e.g. a PI who won't be happy or sad with you depending on the number of analyses or experiments you run," or "Look for a PI who won't pressure you into working on a project whose usefulness you don't understand or believe, even if that means long spells of no visible production." I myself am unsure whether I can realistically find a PI matching these criteria, given that my university research environment feels very productivity-focused, but I think these criteria are at least worth acknowledging as things to aspire to.
Talking about leaving the PhD is even more taboo, although surprisingly, I've heard more talk about that than about tactics for increasing free time, either by shirking (which seems to be more commonly discussed and practiced in other industries) or by winning negotiating power with your boss by "providing value" to them. The latter is a major subject in multiple books, including Tim Ferriss's _4 Hour Workweek_, which enjoys popularity outside my university's academic bubble. (This again deepens my stereotype that we have a longer way to go on these issues in academia.)
I sometimes feel, inspired by Nassim Taleb, that a very good work setup for me would be either complete freedom (i.e. retired and pursuing my own projects) or sinecure-cum-freedom (i.e. having a job that disappears after I leave the office at 12pm each day, and complete freedom afterwards)[1][2]. Another good setup would be in an organization I really believed in (a combination of many factors) and could contribute to. At this point, these feel mostly compatible with my PhD, pending finding a compatible boss, but I haven't seriously imagined if life not in the PhD would be better for pursuing these.

I've experienced complete freedom and I think that some balancing force of commitment, i.e. the sinecure-cum-freedom, might actually feel better. It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly why—perhaps some routinized social interaction or feelings of immediate usefulness to your co-workers.
What counts as a "very good work setup" probably depends a lot on the person, but at the same time, I do think many people look for similar things. I think control and freedom over one's time and one's self is a common value, and I think the work setups I mention above are trying to honor exactly that value.

Here's my question... is it you and only you? Lately I have come across a lot of folks who are not fully present in their bodies for obvious reasons with all the Covid-19 issues and social distancing/home alone etc. Worse than that, some folks with multiple other entities in their bodies.  At face value it sounds kookee when I say it and read it, but it is real as real can get.  I had a client just the other day with crying/raging panic and after we cleared her of the other critters, she was laughing.  All this took place in a minute.  I know of no other FASTER modality.  So as they say, “check yourself before you wreck yourself” and use your fingers/pendulum or standing sway testing and make sure there is only you in your body.  Make the statement, "I (insert your birth name here) am the only being in this body."  Clear/fish as needed and believe me it can make a huge difference.  I even did it for my cat who was hiding and acting aloof and an hour later he got on the bed and licked my hand!  He is such a dude.  I love it and I love what we do and what we’re a part of... Here's my question... is it you and only you? Lately I have come across a lot of folks who are not fully present in their bodies for obvious reasons with all the Covid-19 issues and social distancing/home alone etc. Worse than that, some folks with multiple other entities in their bodies.  At face value it sounds kookee when I say it and read it, but it is real as real can get.  I had a client just the other day with crying/raging panic and after we cleared her of the other critters, she was laughing.  All this took place in a minute.  I know of no other FASTER modality.  So as they say, “check yourself before you wreck yourself” and use your fingers/pendulum or standing sway testing and make sure there is only you in your body.  Make the statement, "I (insert your birth name here) am the only being in this body."  Clear/fish as needed and believe me it can make a huge difference.  I even did it for my cat who was hiding and acting aloof and an hour later he got on the bed and licked my hand!  He is such a dude.  I love it and I love what we do and what we’re a part of... Why Gen Z Should Consider HR Internships

It’s always great to meet smart and ambitious people in this space. It’s even better when they share their knowledge with the rest of the community! Whether you are someone who plans to work full-time in Human Resources one day or not, an internship in HR can be valuable on many different levels. Here are the top 3 reasons why I would highly recommend it:  1.   You learn the ins and outs of a company Whether you are interning for a small or large company, working in the HR department affords you the opportunity to see what drives a company. Whether it’s learning how payroll works, how the compensation structure is determined for different positions, how the recruiting process works, or how the onboarding process for new employees works, working in HR allows you to experience a company from a perspective you would not be able to see from the outside or from any other department within the company. Tip: Ask as many questions as you can. Don’t just stick to your segment of work. Everyone at my company was genuinely happy to discuss their jobs and answer questions about the work they do. By just sticking to only knowing and caring about the work you are assigned, you miss out on an abundance of valuable information and skills that are readily available to you and that you won’t easily have access to once you leave your internship. So, don’t be shy – ask to sit in on a meeting that sounds interesting or ask someone in a different department to grab a cup of coffee and discuss their career with you. 2.   You gain knowledge in many different fields As a talent acquisition associate, it was my job to discuss open positions with interested candidates. To do this, you have to learn about each of the positions that you are discussing with the candidate as they will almost certainly have numerous questions for you. Whether it was a position within our innovation department, an audit position, an accountant role, a job as a client manager, an IoT (Internet of Things) position, an underwriter, or an engineer, I had a pretty strong knowledge base of many different departments. While I was far from an expert on any of these things, I found it very valuable to be able to gain insights into many different fields and to see what piqued my interest. Tip: While efficiency is important, never rush My old basketball coach used to often reference a quote from John Wooden. “Be quick – But don’t hurry.” While I may have originally wanted to impress my manager by getting work done faster and setting up phone screens with as many interested candidates as I could, I quickly learned that it was far more important for me to gain knowledge about the position I was recruiting for before getting on the phone with a candidate. This involved researching the respective department on our company website and reaching out to more experienced recruiters and hiring managers with any questions I had. 3.   You learn what makes a candidate stand out The importance of a strong LinkedIn profile cannot be overstated. In today’s digital world, more and more employers have turned to LinkedIn to recruit and to gain insights into their candidates. A.    You need a profile picture: Having a blank profile picture displays a lack of initiative and effort, and if a candidate can’t take the time to upload a professional picture, how can a recruiter be sure they will be detail-oriented and self-driven if hired? B.     Professional photos only: LinkedIn is not the place for you to have a profile picture of you at the beach or a picture with other people in it (even if it’s cropped, it’s just as bad!). A strong candidate profile has a professional photo in professional clothing with a solid background. C.     A different type of social media: While LinkedIn is considered a form of social media, it is not to be confused with the Facebooks, Twitters, and Instagrams of the social media world. It is a professional site used to highlight key skills, past job experiences, and work update’s from one's current company. When someone posts vacation pictures or pictures from a night out (even if it’s with their co-workers!), it can be very off-putting to a recruiter. D.    Personable, Respectful, Honest: I connected with hundreds of candidates over the course of my internship. When you are performing passive candidate searches and candidates are not actively seeking to work for your company, they can be a bit arrogant or skeptical at first (and understandably so). However, what stood out to me most in a candidate was when they were genuine, fun to talk to, and honest and upfront about their career situation. E.     Follow-up Email: A follow-up message is definitely not a necessity for getting a job, but it certainly can help a candidate stand out. Something as simple as a thank you note for a recruiter’s time after a phone call or an email to check back in on the status of an application can help to keep the candidate fresh in the recruiter’s mind. As I get closer to graduating, I will need to apply to many companies as I seek a full-time job in the future. “Taehyung you’ve done some pretty stupid shit in your life, but this one takes the cake. This is, by far, the dumbest thing you’ve ever done.” 
“Shut up Jimin,” Taehyung grits out, clutching his back. “Namjoon did worse.” 
His bitch of a friend rolls his eyes and crosses his arms. “Well, I don’t think Namjoon hyung thought it was a good idea to climb up on the bar and strip without a stripper pole during Yoongi hyung’s bachelor party. So, yeah. I’m right.” 
Taehyung rolls his eyes and flips off the smirking male and tries to get comfortable on the gurney, which, actually was a pretty difficult thing to do given that his ass was currently caved in halfway up to his lungs. Okay, an exaggeration, but it was probably bruised pretty badly. He wasn’t trying to get hurt, he was just imitating a video of a guy on a pole with a saxophone he saw on youtube the other day. It wasn’t his fault no one told him there was some spilled alcohol on the bar, because if they did, he wouldn’t have fucking gone up there in the first place. 
The rest of his members had just watched him pitifully, mocking him as an extra-grumpy Yoongi dragged him into the car and angrily drove him to the nearest emergency room. But Taehyung wasn’t too worried, he saw the glimmer of joy in Yoongi’s eyes when he realized the horrible bachelor party was over. The older hyung was never a guy for loud bars with sweaty drunk crowds. 
Jimin’s voice brings him out of his own angry thoughts. 
“Uh, yes! Um, so this idiot over here slipped off a bar and landed on his ass pretty hard. And we need to be up and okay for a wedding the day after tomorrow, so could you take a look and let us know what to expect? Like, if we need to replace the guy or not?”
Taehyung’s currently facedown on the gurney, in the only comfortable position he can manage right now, and so he rolls his eyes and cranes his neck to see who Jimin is talking to. And he almost rolls off the gurney right there. 
You’re dressed in the cutest little nurse’s outfit ever, scrubs with little fluffy animals for the top and darker slacks on the bottom. And you’re literally the prettiest girl he’s ever seen in his life, despite his drunk-off-the-charts state right now. But the expression on your face is completely different from the cute little sheep on your scrubs. 
“You came to the emergency room for this? And labeled it a spinal emergency?” You quirk your eyebrow at Jimin and Taehyung bites his lip because he’s delighted to see his friend get chewed out and shrivel up in front of someone other than his wife for once. Jimin sputters and is muttering something and pushing an equally sputtering Jeongguk up to you. And you’re not taking any of it, watching as the two boys argue over who it was who filed the incident as a spinal injury and Jeongguk is sneakily trying to leave and Taehyung yells out, catching everyone’s attention. 
“Yeah! It’s fine! You can leave, we can leave!” Taehyung tries to get up but his ass isn’t having it and the muscles there are screaming at him to stop moving, so he groans and slumps against the gurney as the busan motherfuckers watch and snicker. He’s desperate to get the fuck out of here cause there’s no way in hell that he’s letting a cute girl look at his bruised up ass before he even gets a chance to take her out on a date, but then you’re rolling your eyes and snapping on some gloves and grumbling “let’s get this overwith” while yanking his pants down, ignoring his protests and shooing away the two spectating menaces. 
Taehyung gasps and clenches his fists on the gurney. He squeezes his eyes shut and tries to clench his butt muscles a little so he can look a little more endowed, but then you’re glaring at him and telling him to relax and so he gives up. 
You sigh, letting him gather up his pants and his dignity when you’re done, and he manages a position where he’s lying sideways on the gurney to try and keep off the weight on his behind. 
Putting your hands on your hips, you quirk an eyebrow. “Did you land on the corner?” 
He’s confused, and he lets out a loud, “Huh?” 
You roll your eyes, peeling off the gloves and scribbling on his charts. “When you slipped off the bar, did you land on the corner?” 
He thinks for a bit, and then nods sheepishly. “Y-yeah… how did you know?” 
You look at him boredly. “There’s literally a v-shaped indent on your ass.” 
His eyes narrow. “Hey, how old are you? Shouldn’t nurses be like a little more nice or something?” 
You narrow your eyes back. “Well, according to your charts, I’m old enough to tell you that coming to an emergency room drunk and labeling a bruise on your ass as a spinal injury is highly inappropriate.” 
He lets out a smirk, because he’s never got so turned on by an angry woman in his life before. “Well, you can say inappropriate again. I knew you lingered a little too much on the peach. Liked it that much huh?” He bites his lip and does the eyebrow wiggle that usually had fans screaming back in the day. 
You huff, and cross your arms. “Ugh, I’m not dealing with this.” You turn to Jimin and Jeongguk and rattle off instructions. “He’s fine, so don’t worry about the wedding. If he wants to be able to walk properly though, you might wanna help him out with some ointment and numbing cream. And next time, if you punks ever show up here again drunk and trying to get faster help by mislabeling your injuries, I will personally make sure you never come back to this hospital again.” 
Jimin and Jeongguk agree with hands clasped politely in front of them and heads bowed low as you glare at them and walk away to your next patient. Those punks were lucky that tonight wasn’t a busy time because if it were and you ran across their antics, you would’ve beaten them up and made sure they had more than ass injuries, HR problems or not. This was a professional, highly emergent area, and you weren’t going to let some dudes waltz in thinking they were entitled to faster treatment, no matter how good-looking they were or how cute their butts might be. 
You shake your thoughts off as you tend sweetly to a small kid who’s running a higher fever, and you glance at the doorway to see the limping lanky boy walking off, clutching his ass. 
The next morning, is just the same, as you greet your coworkers on the way to the nurse’s locker room. But as you pass the reception desk, your friend calls out to you. 
“Y/N! You’re here! Look at what’s here for you!” 
You pause at the outburst and hesitantly approach the desk. And there, on the counter, is a small ceramic pot filled with succulents. You scrunch your nose at the small cacti, “Moonbyul, why did someone send me succulents that look like butts?”
She claps excitedly. “I love succulents! Oh, Y/N, aren’t they adorable? They’re gibbaeum heathii and they’re absolutely wonderful to add to any succulent collection! Look at how smooth they are, Y/N!” 
You frown. “Who sent this?” 
She straightens up, “Oh! Right! He’s waiting outside in the park, he says he can wait until you’re free.” 
And then it occurs to you, who the sender is. So you thank her and carry the succulents and as you expected, he’s standing out in front of the hospital gardens, awkwardly sitting down and trying to cross his legs. 
He’s still distracted when you approach him. But you march right up to him and he looks down at the white shoes on your feets and trails his eyes up your jeans and your regular outfit up to your unamused face and tries his best to flash you a smile. 
“Really? Butt succulents?” you quirk. 
He stands, and stills, wincing at the feeling on his behind. “I-I just wanted to apologize for last night, I-I was drunk off my mind and I don’t really remember what I said to you or did to you. But Jimin and Jeongguk told me to give you these and apologize and I’m not really sure what to say cause I have absolutely no idea what happened and I–” 
“Okay, okay relax.” You don’t mention you’re a little distracted by how cute he is when he’s sober. The cocky punk from last night is gone and in place, is a little cute boy with messed up hair and a big boxy smile that’s rubbing his neck awkwardly as he tries to muster up an apology. 
“I-I’m so so sorry.” He looks like his eyes are gonna pop out of his head, wide open as they plead with you, “I’m sorry you had to look at my butt and I’m sorry that I got drunk and–” 
“Woah, woah, Taehyung-shi, that’s enough. It’s okay.” 
“–and Hoseok hyung kept telling me to take more shots and then showed me this video of santa claus doing the saxaphone on a strip pole and–wait, what did you say?” 
You frown, “Uh, we’ll revisit the santa claus thing. But I said, it’s okay.” 
He lets out a huge sigh and his shoulders droop and he lets out this big gummy boxy smile that makes your heart skip a beat and he’s smiling because the only thing he remembers is how pretty he thought you were last night and he’s so happy that you’re exactly how he remembered. 
So as you two settle into a comfortable silence as you smile at eachother, he glances down at the succulents and winces. 
“The succulents were a bad idea huh?” 
You smile down at the little green plants and shrug. “They’re not so bad. But I hate to say this but I’m literally the worst at keeping plants alive.” 
He shrugs, “Uh, maybe, I can help you with that? Maybe I could like take you out to watch a documentary on gardening or something, maybe, if you want to. Like, this weekend, or something.” 
You smile amusedly at the tall boy in front of you. “Excuse me? Are you asking me out Kim Taehyung?”
He rubs his neck, shyly meeting your eyes. “Yes?” 
You laugh. “I think that’s what I’m supposed to say.” 
He pauses before he gets it. And then he’s smiling even bigger and whooping and then all of a sudden he’s keeling over because he clenched too hard when he jumped and now he’s in pain all over again. 
“Oh my god, Taehyung are you okay?”
“I-I’m fine, I’m fine. By the way, what are you doing tomorrow?” He straightens up with a wince and you hesitantly let him go. 
“Uh, I’m off of work at noon. Why?” 
He smiles, “Would you like to go to a wedding with me?”

Some call him the Bill Gates of the crypto industry, but I personally think he is not just pushing forward our industry but transforming deeply rooted economic and social culture. He fills concert halls talking about the importance of decentralization and the freedom of money. He finds time to organize dinners for journalists, introducing them to the empire he built before briskly leaving for another meeting with his team. He is idolized by his colleagues, respected by his competitors, and radiates positive energy when you meet him.
In the 2019 bear market, he managed to keep Binance’s position as one of the leading crypto exchanges by launching its first initial exchange offering in January, developing its native blockchain Binance Chain, running a decentralized trading platform, launching a United States trading desk, and keeping it competitive with Binance’s futures trading platform — to cite just a few developments.
So, when the time came to make a choice for the winner of Cointelegraph’s first-ever Top 100 list, Changpeng Zhao’s selection was a unanimous decision among our editors.
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend an hour with CZ on the eve of Valentine’s Day — a holiday he would spend with his true love: his work — to talk a bit about himself and his plans (with the next major move being the launch of Binance Cloud, exclusive details on which will be revealed very soon).

Keep everything simple and work hard
Upon learning that he was selected for the top spot on the list and being asked about his favorite accomplishments in 2019, he was characteristically humble: “Other than just putting together a really good team and then leading them forward, I personally didn’t really do that much. But the team did a lot of really hard work.”
2019 was certainly a year full of initiatives and product launches, all of which received CZ’s thorough participation. Within the next couple of years, though, he plans to build up a “more unneeded situation” for himself, so that nothing depends too much on him. After that, he shared, he can probably relax and spend more time traveling the world, breaking the limits of the mode “airport–hotel–back to airport–kind of gone.”
It is hard to believe he will one day do less than he does now, as he is such a maximalist when it comes to work. He is known, however, as being rather minimalistic in his personal life. No big houses, no yachts, not even a business suit. Neither did he celebrate the last new year, explaining that he stayed home because “it is just another day.”
“I’m not materialistic because it’s kind of hard to carry anything that’s physical. I like to keep mobile. I like to be able to live in a different city every month if I want to. And with a shared economy, it’s so much easier now. So we don’t need a car — you have Uber everywhere. You have Airbnb, so I don’t need to buy a house. I don’t feel the need to own a lot of stuff, to have a really complicated life. Just keep everything simple.”
When was the last time you did something for the first time?
“There’s got to be a few recently, actually [with enthusiasm] I can’t remember what they are, but there’s got to be a couple of first times [starts thinking deeply] recently. [long pause] I actually can’t remember that much, to be honest.”
I asked CZ whether he likes being famous and what the biggest challenge to being a person in the public eye is. If he had a choice, he promptly responded, he would prefer not to be famous. But Binance had to have a public face in order to raise money and continue to grow. It is also very important, according to CZ, to have a public face to establish trust with customers who entrust their funds to Binance’s custody. “I know we’re in an industry that technically we don’t need trust, but there’s still a lot of trust that’s needed in a lot of different places.”
CZ also revealed with a smile that he was forced to be a public face, as other members of the team did not want to go public.
“I was actually hoping there would be a better face, to be honest. I don’t think I’m a very good public speaker. There are also much better-looking people. But unfortunately, for Binance, it’s me. So Binance is kind of stuck with me for now.”
Keep calm and go all-in on Bitcoin
It was in 2013 that CZ began to learn about Bitcoin. He read the white paper and started going to thematic events. Later, at a small conference in Las Vegas, he met some of today’s giants of the industry: Charlie Lee, Matthew Roszak, Vitalik Buterin. There was also a representative of Ripple who taught CZ how to use it. In the process, he transferred some XRP to CZ. When they were done, CZ wanted to transfer the coins back, but heard in response, “You can keep it and you can use it to teach the next guy.” This sparked a wild crypto adventure.
CZ quickly became enthusiastic about the technology: “I thought that community was really nice. I had a really high confidence in Bitcoin succeeding, in cryptocurrency succeeding.”
In 2014, CZ sold his house to go all-in on Bitcoin. Within three months, BTC dropped from $600 to $200, losing him two-thirds of the value of his house for roughly two years before the price went up again. When asked whether he would advise someone to take such a risk, CZ responded more as a wiseman than a poker player: “For different people, that risk appetite and risk situation is different. I would not recommend people who are struggling to pay off mortgages on their house and who need a guaranteed income from their investments to pay off some loan, to sell their house and go all-in on crypto, because crypto is highly volatile.”
You seem such a calm person. Do you meditate, or were you born like this?
“I don’t meditate that much. I tried it. I find it a little bit boring, to be honest. I don’t need it. I’m already very calm. I have a low heart rate. My resting heart rate is like 50-something. In Binance, I’ve never shouted. I’ve never yelled at anybody. I’ve never sort of become really sort of agitated. I’m always a very calm person.”
Not only did he sell the house, he also quit his job. Within two weeks, he managed to find a new one at blockchain.info, where he stayed for five months before joining OKCoin as chief technical officer. There, he spent no more than a year. It was 2017, the year of Binance’s foundation.
Along the way, CZ contributed to a considerable number of startups, many of which failed. He has a tip that helps him stay optimistic, a parable he once heard from someone: “If you walk to the bottom of a valley, what do you do? And the answer is pretty simple: You just keep walking as long as you keep walking. Then you eventually get out of the valley.”
Keep coding and get an MBA
CZ majored in computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. But the last time he was coding something, he said, was a couple of years ago. He has never coded for Binance — all its code is written by others — but he was writing scripts for himself. Now, he admits to not having any time to sit down and stare at a computer screen uninterrupted. It is simply not his current life situation. He called his time very segmented, as he gets interrupted very often.
“I tell other people that now I have a memory of a goldfish, like I can’t remember anything longer than seven seconds.”
When asked for advice to the next generation of founders on whether it is better to get a degree in computer science or a master’s degree in business administration, CZ rejects the premise of the question and says to go for both. His view is that, in this sector and at this capacity, you are forced to deal with everything: technology, business models, business development, deal negotiations, marketing, customer service, compliance, legal, accounting, finance, HR. And guess what? CZ doesn’t consider himself an expert in any of these areas. With my objection to CZ’s claims of being a poor public speaker quickly dismissed earlier, I decided that contesting him at this point would be futile.
Keep being number one and go forward
The first interview with CZ I took part in dates back to 2018. Back then, he told us that Binance tries very hard not to be number one, “because being number one creates other problems sometimes, especially with regulators.” In 2020, I asked whether CZ still agrees with that, or if he’d finally given up on trying not to stand out too much.
CZ admitted that two years ago, the market was riddled with regulatory uncertainty, while today’s situation is much better. “I think today it’s OK to push forward, get the market share, and you will not be the lonely one at the top who all the regulators come for.” He also added that there is more fierce competition on the market today, so it’s become harder for small players to build themselves up.
“But we are still at the early stages. We want to see more exchanges, because right now, all over the world, if you can see more exchanges, we can see more people coming into crypto.”
CZ seems very satisfied with his professional career: “I feel I’m really lucky to have the chance to be doing what we’re doing, which is to increase access to crypto, increase the freedom of money for people around the world. That is something I’m really energetic about doing. And I just feel lucky to be in a position to be able to do that.”
If you could clone yourself, what would you like that clone to do?
“I would love the clone to do other work [laughing]. I’d make a lot of clones to do a lot of work. We can do like ten different interviews at the same time.”
Keep cool, we are living in a simulation
Binance’s current focus on developing the freedom of money is intended to give people funding power to do more research on biotech, space exploration (this field, CZ leaves to Elon Musk) and AI — all of which, according to CZ, will help our species advance significantly. For example, CZ thinks, the Coronavirus issue could be solved once funding on research is sped up.
CZ definitely wants the existing world to get better, but at the same time, he is a big believer of simulation theory. It means that we are living in an artificial, digital simulation that is conceived or orchestrated by a more sophisticated intelligence. It also means, according to CZ, that in 100 or 500 years, the advancement of technology will make the simulation we are living in controllable.
“I believe it’s 99,99999 % we’re living in a simulation. So mathematically it is basically 100 percent.”
“If you look at that Nintendo Super Mario, we can simulate the guy moving forward, moving backwards. The tricky part is I don’t know what kind of simulation we are yet. We see it being simulated by a higher being, a different dimension — or are we just sitting, sleeping there, dreaming similarly about ourselves or our own kind.”
Even though we do not know in which simulation we are living, CZ explained, it does not mean we do not have to take it seriously. On the contrary, even if it’s a full simulation, everything in the simulation still matters. “There’s a Coronavirus that matters, there’s a flooding in places, climate change, all of those things are challenges that are thrown on our way. And we should try our best to help where we can.”
Another positive aspect of believing in simulation is that it helps dealing with difficult situations and stress, it kind of gives you a lighter view on things. “Sometimes you say, ‘Well, you know, it’s just a simulation, it’s just a game.’ My role here is just to do the best I can. So I just keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep marching forward. So it makes life a lot easier, actually.”

"Work from home scams" are becoming more abundant these days. However, there is one that is popping up on legitimate jobs sites you need to be aware of. More and more people are searching for a secure work from home job opportunity they can actually trust. Sadly, there are so many scams now, preying on people looking for a work at home oppotunity. One of the most popular work from home scams seems to be popping up on sites that you would normally trust.

Sites like Forbes, Indeed and other big names are posting links that read, “Work From Home - $27/hr”; “Top 3" Work At Home Jobs; Post Links and Make Up To $379 a day; or Work At Home Opportunity, Earn $379 per Day. Be careful as these are most likely "Work From Home Scams". You will find variations of wording that follows the above links. All of these links, take you to the same looking page. By the way, these sites change business names more often than changing socks. All of which are work from home online jobs frauds. Lately it has been the same person that seems to be offering the program, “Kelly Simmons”. How many of you have run across this type of offer or Kelly Simmons’ opportunities? Please feel free to leave me a comment if you have. I plan on continuing locating these type scams, so your help would be greatly appreciated… Below, is a list of Kelly Simmons work from home scams. Usually under different company names and domain names. These often under a different personal names as well. They all have the same layout and page. Most are duplicates, but sometimes a variance. So beware of these names: Company And Ad Names   Kelly Simmons Aliases   Dead Giveaways On This Work At Home Scam Usually, you are lead into her first page that look like a professional newspaper article. Notice the article is by Amanda Winston, a Consumer Trend Investigator. Go look her up, she is fake as this news article. In fact, this name appears in many other scams to promote authenticity.

    Fake News Endorsements Here is a "play on words" trick, that isn't usually caught. You have in the top right corner or anywhere on the page really. It states, "Work From Home Opportunities Have Been Featured On". They use quite a few main media logos such as CNN, Fox News, ABC and more.

Just about all main news medias have talked about "Work From Home Opportunities". However, if you notice, there is no claim that this program is the one that was referred too. It is just a plain generic statement that could refer to any program. You will find this video clip on most of these Kelly sites. The clip is from a news reporter, talking about work at home jobs. However, I do not think this is a “Fake News Report”. If you pay attention, it is like the “Work From Home Opportunities” statement, It doesn’t refer to this program at all. It is a clip that Kelly Simmons has used to help promote her work at home scams. If you watch and listen to it, there is no mention or reference to this offer.   They Have To Admit To Their Lies They also admit under their Terms of Service, (TOS), that they are not affiliated or supported by any news media or publication. You can read this under "Warranties" on their TOS, (Terms of Service).

  If you read these work from home scams sites TOS. You will see, they openly admit that names and stories are not necessarily real. They have to include that for legal reasons. They just don't expect anyone ever to actually read it or understand it.

  Is The "Limited Positions Left" Really True? If you notice, you have the intimidating counter for how many spots are left for you to grab this awesome opportunity. I have personally seen this program since 2013, and so far they haven’t run out of spots yet. This is another tactic to push you into buying into this work at home scam.

  Fake Testimonials Even the testimonials are fake. They have used stock photos from companies like Shutterstock, and like in this photo, Snapixel. TIP: If ever curious, right click on a picture and save it to the desktop. Open a Google search in Images. Drag the image into the search field. The results will show you other sites the image is placed.

  Is There A Real Job? Sadly there is not a real job. All you will get is some lame outdated training that really won't help you. This is provided you get anything at all. In order to be a success working from home, you either work for a real company or run your own business. This scam offers neither one of these opportunities. Make Money Posting Links - LIE!!! It is a lie telling you that you can make money posting links, there is no such job. The closest job for posting links is a 'Social Media Manager". As a SocialMedia Manager, you can work for a company or yourself. However, this job is more than just posting links. A Social Media Manager updates and answers messages on other people's or company's social accounts like Twitter and Facebook. Another clue to this being fallacious is, the amount of money they claim you will make. To make as much as $8000 in your first month, is difficult for an experienced marketer. Awesome as $8000 per month sounds, it just isn't going to happen. There are real companies looking to hire people to work from home, check them out HERE... Here Is What You Get For Your Money This work at home scam, with all its different names and avenues, is running from $67 to $97. What you get, is nothing for your investment. The 30 day money back guarantee is also unobtainable. Be sure to read the details in the fine print. They don't stop at the one time purchase fee, there are "up-sells". Not only will you go through up-sell pages, your inbox will get blown up. There will be more up-sells and product offers,which again, are scams. Oh, did you forget you had to give them a phone number? Not only do they bug the crap out of you through emails, they also sell your phone number to other solicitors. Then you get spam on you phone as well. So what you get for your money, is a lot of aggravation, and no real training or support to help you make a real income from home. If you are interested in learning about training in making money online, click HERE...   Bottom Line This Work At Home Scam that Kelly Simmons is constantly running, has all the signs you should look for in any offer. Any time the offer has limited spaces or a limited time offer, it is either fake or an unethical tactic to push you into the product. Always look at the testimonials, search the images to see what other sites they are on. Pay attention to wording in endorsements. Always stop before going too far into a product, and look for reviews on the product. Also do reviews on the author or person of the product. It doesn't hurt to review the reviewer as they can be fake or collaborators. This offer is one you should stay away from. I wouldn't trust using a credit card to test it or try it out. It has been around for years and what you get in return is nothing. Don't Get Discouraged Do not let the work from home scams discourage you. Should You Use an Employee LMS for Extended Enterprise Learning in 2019?
Early in 2014, I set-out to answer a question I constantly hear as a learning systems selection consultant:
“Should we use our employee LMS to educate external audiences?”
Back then, I didn’t definitively say “yes” or “no.” Instead, I advised decision makers to proceed with caution before embracing a one-for-all LMS mindset. Why? Primarily because employee educational goals, interests and motivations don’t apply to extended enterprise learners.
Employees are captive LMS users. They are “known” by the system and they must comply with mandated training assignments.
On the other hand, customers and business partners can’t be forced to engage in learning activities. An LMS often doesn’t “know” the identity of these users until they’re persuaded to register or buy. Even then, their participation is voluntary, not mandatory.
These extended LMS use cases translate into very different functional requirements than employee LMS requirements. The reverse is also true – many employee LMS features are unnecessary in extended enterprise applications.

There are other reasons why there’s no simple answer to the one-LMS-for-all question. For instance, decisions about extended enterprise learning usually come from business units, not HR or L&D, and these programs are often funded at different times.
Also, extended enterprise initiatives almost always serve many more external learners than employees. This makes a “license economies of scale” argument irrelevant.
For example, a software company with 1000 employees could serve 1 million customers. In this case, the customer education scope would blow employee LMS licensing out of the water.
Most importantly, in contrast with hard-to-measure employee education, extended enterprise learning programs are easy to measure. They contribute to bottom-line results and help companies gain a competitive advantage. Given that kind of executive exposure, business impact – not cost – is the key factor driving vendor selection.
Finally, from a practical and political perspective, choosing an extended enterprise LMS independent of HR or L&D is often easier than pursuing a one-LMS-for-all solution.
Same Question, Different Day. What’s Changed?
Five years after publishing my original post, I still hear that same question on a regular basis. And even though my answer remains the same, my perspective is much different. After all, some things have changed considerably:
•  Extended enterprise learning is no longer a novel idea. Organizations of every size in every industry are proving that you can gain and sustain a competitive advantage by educating customers, channel partners, franchisees, developers, contractors and other external audiences.
•  Learning systems innovation has continued to progress at a mind-blowing pace, along with new business technologies that integrate data and applications, expand their reach, accelerate their performance and add value in countless ways.
•  During the past 5 years, I’ve reviewed over 200 learning systems and helped nearly 60 organizations choose their extended enterprise learning systems. Collectively, these organizations invest more than $15 million a year in licensing fees to run their systems. Now I’m even more confident about what works, what doesn’t – and why.
What do these changes mean for you if you’re wondering whether it’s wise to serve internal and external learning audiences with an employee LMS? Let’s dig deeper.
2 Buyer Categories: Which Profile Fits You?
In our work with learning systems buyers, we see two distinct extended enterprise purchasing profiles. Their objectives, priorities and requirements sometimes overlap, but mostly they’re unique:
•  Corporate Extended Enterprise – These buyers are interested in serving any combination of employees, customers, channel sales representatives, distributors and other business partners. They’re mainly interested in using learning content to support their core business in strategic and measurable ways.
•  Continuing Education – These buyers are professional associations, commercial training companies and entrepreneurial subject matter experts, representing virtually every industry and topic area. They’re interested in modern ecommerce-enabled “learning-as-a-business” systems because selling learning content is their business.

On one hand, most vendors now avoid the term “LMS” entirely, fearing that their solutions will seem outdated. Meanwhile, buyers grapple with countless variations on an LMS theme, wondering if there’s any functional difference, at all.

To simplify the corporate extended enterprise learning landscape, we rely on three categories:
1) Employee/Talent Solutions
These systems focus on workforce onboarding, compliance and professional development. They rely heavily on HR/ERP platform integration (for example with Workday or SAP). Typically, they coordinate work objectives, learning paths, assessments, feedback, collaboration, hiring and performance reviews.
Examples in this group including Adobe Captivate Prime, BizLibrary, Bridge by Instructure, CrossKnowledge, Degreed, Gyrus, Lessonly, SuccessFactors and SumTotal.
These systems generally ignore extended enterprise needs, so they’re not recommended as “single source” learning systems to serve all audiences. However, they are solid employee solutions. So, if you already use one successfully for workforce learning, we typically wouldn’t recommend that you replace it.
2) Corporate Extended Enterprise Solutions

Traditionally, these systems were built with an “employee-first” mentality, but also offer functionality for external audiences. However, many of these platforms have been strengthening their extended enterprise capabilities in recent years.
For instance, it’s now common to see support for multiple domains, delegated administration, ecommerce, content sharing, CRM integration and robust analytics.
Examples in this group include Cornerstone OnDemand, Docebo, PeopleFluent NetDimensions, Saba, SAP Litmos, Schoox, TalentLMS, Totara and UpsideLMS.
These systems can effectively drive learning programs that target employees, customers, business partners or a combination of audiences. If you already have a system from this category and want to expand your reach, it may be possible.
3) Pure Extended Enterprise Solutions
These vendors ignore employee LMS needs. Instead, they focus 100% of their research, development, marketing, licensing strategy, professional services expertise and thought leadership on the advancement of targeted solutions for customer education, channel training and other extended enterprise learning needs.
Examples include BlueVolt, Community Brands, Learndot by ServiceRocket, LearnUpon, NetExam, Northpass, Skilljar and Thought Industries.
Vendors in this category consistently demonstrate why dedicated extended enterprise solutions are highly preferable and profitable – even for organizations with multiple learning platforms.

Clearly, learning systems have evolved in all categories. Many vendors are able and willing to discuss the pros and cons of any scenario we’ve outlined above. But as a buyer, be prepared. You’ll probably receive radically different advice, depending on which vendors you contact and evaluate.

Many managers make the mistake of hiring a developer, letting them start the trial weeks, but not monitoring what they’re actually doing.
Don’t assume that someone who seems skilled and experienced will deliver the same commitment and quality of work to you too. May I say this is the best and only time to be a micromanager and literally oversee all of their actions.
But do offer your help within the first days by making sure they have all resources needed and making the appropriate introductions to your team.
Get them involved in the code writing process for your project as soon as possible so you can get a better feel of how they conduct their work. I’ll also advise you to try a pair programming session during the hiring process too. More on this procedure later in this guide.
Prepare the right work methods
This is largely the manager’s decision. Team feedback is only valid when everyone knows the relevant best practices and benefits of each work method. This doesn’t mean you can't get their input on the methods they’d prefer to use. However, letting them take care of the decision process will only give rise to conflicts and postpone the choice for the time being since there simply will be too many opinions for you to sort out.
“While you do not want to micromanage a remote team, you certainly want to set up clear minimum administrative processes. For a previous remote team I had to manage, this included setting-up very precisely the infamous JIRA workflow. While it is good to leave a remote team some freedom, work also needs to be clearly organized, so there should be a few processes that have very precise descriptions. In development, the most important of such processes are issues management, and also the build process. This should be described in detail, and followed strictly. To make sure key processes are respected, there should be set points when work needs to stop until the process is followed. As an example, I gave strict orders to my business team not to look at any incident that is not documented.” - Nicolas de Mauroy, CEO @Open Lowcode
But how close should supervision really be?
Surprisingly – not that in depth.
Keep your devs under your radar only enough to guarantee that all processes run smoothly and you’re able to maintain a trust both ways. Yes, 50% of data breaches across all industries are caused by insiders, but that doesn’t mean you must force everyone to track their time or record their screens.
Developers should really only have to track their time in 2 instances:
They/you really want to improve your work processes.
They’re getting paid by the hour.
Your role as a manager goes beyond the person who is seemingly in charge of everything. You’re a liaison. That key link between one team member and another, helping your development team collaborate with operations, marketing, design, customer support, and sales while also ensuring all team members are happy and their needs are met.
I’m super disappointed to tell you that only 35% of managers are engaged with their work. How is this going to motivate someone else?
Employees who are supervised by highly-engaged managers are in turn going to be better and happier performers themselves. This will boost your employee retention rates and create that long-lasting company-worker bond most companies can never attain.
This takes me to the importance of knowing when and how to communicate. Both ways.
Craft your remote team collaboration plan
Collaboration goes hand-in-hand with your work method and how you manage tasks. It’s the little things like crafting clear task descriptions and expectations that add up to distinguish a positive collaboration experience from a chaotic one.
Tinjo Thomas, Design Technologist @Coredes Interactive also recommends the following two tweaks you can make:
“1. Always set a due date for each task even though your developers are experts and can make estimates themselves. 2. If you are giving instructions to only one or two people, don't send the message to the whole group. Reach out to every individual in private. People spend a lot of time reading unnecessary conversations on channels.”
On meetings
Meetings are honestly a very controversial topic. Managers love to call meetings. Devs, though, hate most of them but are afraid to voice their thoughts.
To keep meetings relevant, here are some actionable points to keep in mind:
“On a more macro-level, knowledge sharing can happen through a weekly team meeting with a Q&A via video whereby the members of the team can share what they learned from the codebase with each other as well as ask questions. In terms of knowledge sharing through team meetings - you can have several types of meetings. The overall idea for these is to encourage collaboration in an effort to turn explicit knowledge into tacit knowledge. So you can have brainstorming sessions or meetings geared more towards lessons learned (this can be in the form of a demo or presentation). All done entirely remotely.” - Emil Hajric, CEO @Helpjuice
One huge mistake first-time remote team managers make is filling up entire days with meetings:
“First-time remote team managers need to be quite aware of the differences between collaborative work [like Scrum meetings and software architecture design] and individual focus work [like coding]. It is important to schedule time and ensure everyone can contribute to the collaborative session, but then leave your professionals alone to do what they were hired to do, write great software.” - Pedro Henriques, Co-Founder & CEO @BRIDGE IN
You’ll want to always remember to press that record button during meetings. We’re not necessarily fans of paper trails, but you’ll need them to avoid bothering your team with issues that have already been discussed:
“You should be recording and saving absolutely everything from remote team meetings and strategy sessions. While working remotely, we've noticed a huge uptick in productivity when managers and team members can refer directly to meetings instead of having to play phone tag or email back and forth for simple information. It's a huge boon to workflow across the board and should really become the new normal with the increase in remote team management.” - Alexander M. Kehoe, Co-Founder and Operations Director @Caveni
Keeping up-to-date with all changes is even more important when your team’s distributed. But remote teams have different approaches to how they make sure they don’t just communicate, but also apply and consider every opinion.
Here’s where the real-time vs asynchronous communication battle comes in. Everything’s already been said about this. So the conclusion is:
There’s a right time for each type of communication. A predisposition for certain types of tasks will also make your remote team more likely to go for one method of communication over the other.
Just like the video vs written communication issue.
The Voro team, for instance, has used their office and remote communication tests to conclude that written collaboration worked best for them:
“My #1 tip for managing a remote team is to default to written communication rather than video calls. This forces you to clarify your thinking and communicate succinctly. When we all worked in the same office, it was easy to walk over to someone’s desk to talk through a problem. It would waste a great deal of time to replicate that with a scheduled video call. Since we are 100% remote, more of our communication has been written, and we try to memorialize most of that in internal documents, so we continue to move fast and share institutional knowledge seamlessly.” - Tomas Hoyos, CEO @Voro
Invest more time in one-on-ones
With one-on-ones, you’re focusing more on sharing the status of specific tasks and individual activities, while every single member on your team gets to make their own suggestions. One-on-ones are commonly held between one team leader and the other members at a time.
Having these twice a month is your best bet to make sure everything gets covered. Holding them weekly is too often as you won’t have time to focus on your other tasks because you’re too busy with meetings.
These one-on-one meetings are also a good opportunity for you to hold reviews and updates on the OKRs. To facilitate the feedback and ideation process, Charles Ahmadzadeh, CTO @Bunch uses checklists during these meetings:
“I like to use checklists with my team. I'll ask each team member to create a checklist each day of what needs to be done before ending the day and before submitting their work. We review these checklists in 1:1s to spot patterns. I mostly use this to help others around me grow or keep myself accountable to the feedback I receive from the team. The good thing about them is that they work no matter how senior you are (even astronauts live by checklists). They’re easy to share in 1:1, even if your team is remote, and very simple to use, as long as you’re committed to improving yourself.”
NOTE ON OBJECTIVES AND KEY RESULTS: Team leaders can establish these at a team and individual level by also taking into account suggestions from developers.
For instance, each department or team can have specific targets: to release a feature on time, avoid more than 2 major bugs after a release, keep the error rate low, etc. Individually, each member should take care of one release so that every single team member will know how to handle them.
Here’s an actionable idea: Use TrackJS [or other error tracking tool for your programming language]. Every member can choose a top error and fix it. This allows members to increase their accountability and learn new things to avoid freezing their skills.
Pair programming finally getting the attention it deserves
Now is also the best time to experiment with pair programming. This practice allows two developers to work simultaneously, often on the same tasks. While this is usually done from the same computer, you can switch it up a bit and make use of tools like TeamViewer or screen sharing.
Pair programming also helps distributed teams improve the quality of their code, tighten bonds between colleagues, transfer information and know-how from one dev to another, increase their own accountability, and speed up the entire development process.
Does this make you feel like you’ve been missing out on all its benefits? 🦄 Just keep in mind some best practices if you want to get started with using the pair programming practice on a regular basis.
By using common sense, you probably won’t have both developers working on the same thing for 8 hours straight. Instead, distribute tasks evenly and allot a specific time slot for them to actually work together. Dealing with multiple time zones? Pair programmers within similar work schedules.
Communicate beyond work with your remote teams
We’re all humans. So we can’t work, work, work all the time. How about you implement some activities for people to destress twice a week as part of your remote team management process?
Playing board games online. Having a #watercooler channel on Slack. Finding some creative online team building activities. These are all ideas to help your remote teams unwind and get their mind off anything that’s stressing them out.
Pedro Henriques also shared his thoughts on the importance of implementing this type of downtime while working remotely:
“Remote teams need to deliberately schedule slack time and create informal virtual watercooler moments. In the office, the watercooler or coffee machine is often the place for spontaneous discussions about various topics ranging from a nasty software bug to vent about office politics or even troubles in personal life. These discussions are not superfluous. They’re absolutely critical for team cohesion. Therefore managers should actively promote them, but make sure not to attend.”
Choose the right tools: The basics will do, there are no magical solutions
I’ve seen so many “best tools for remote work” lists the Internet could really crash for good.
Nah, but really, stop looking for the best apps and miraculous software to somehow save your remote teams.
We already know everyone is using Slack and Zoom to collaborate and the ones who don’t use these are probably doing so because of small issues they had or costs they wanted to lower.
For instance, from all apps I’ve tested for this purpose Google Meet was the fastest and most accurate one but guess what? My clients are using Zoom already. No room to impose another tool.
The key point is not to waste weeks trying to find the right tools for your team. Others have already done this. There are thousands of options out there. All of them are copying features from each other so you end up with the same tool in dozens of versions.
So here’s your stack:
Jira - Slack - Zoom - GitHub - InVision - a bug tracking tool - every developer’s code editor
Test these [preferably the free versions first] and only look for alternatives if you have huge issues that are stilting your workflow. My two cents.

“Don't try to save money on bug tracking or team management tools. You will know why it’s important when things don’t get done as you expected.”
