“It has been many years, but he begins to find his own peace.”

Loki is given the sceptre when Odin falls into the Odinsleep after banishing Thor to Earth.  But Frigga was right to be concerned, this time Odin does not wake.  Thor remains on earth. 

After Loki kills Laufey, Frigga runs to him and hugs him fiercely. Loki doesn’t let go. They sit side by side on the edge of Odin’s bed and talk. As the adrenaline ebbs Loki can’t hold back the tears, but Frigga holds him tightly and lets him cry. 

Loki remains Regent for several years. One day Thor returns to Asgard, but he seeks only his Father’s permission to free himself from the duties of the throne so that he might spend his time with Jane. Loki leads Thor into the chamber to see Odin lying in the Odinsleep. The brothers share memories of their father and the fear that he will not awaken. At Odin’s bedside, Loki tells Thor that he is Jotun. Thor is shocked but embraces Loki in an enormous hug and promises he will always be his brother. Thor returns to earth.

Another year passes and Odin draws his final breath, never having awoken. Frigga grieves, but she knows Asgard is in good hands with her youngest son.  At Odin’s funeral as Loki gives the command for the archer to shoot the flaming arrow to light the longship, he looks to his right and sees tears in Thor’s eyes that mirror his own. While he will always have conflicting feelings about his parents he is certain he was loved, and he finds that this is enough.

Fifty years after Thor first returned from his banishment, Hemindall opens the Bifrost bridge to him once again. Loki is there to meet him in the observatory. Thor looks much the same as then but his eyes carry a heavy grief. He tells Loki that Jane has passed away and that though she was mortal and thus it was always fated to be this way, the pain is no less. Thor spends time on Asgard, talking with Frigga, training and drinking with the Warriors Three, and walking in the mountains. But he does not settle. Three months later he comes to Loki to say goodbye, he cannot stay on Asgard and he can no longer return to earth.  He intends to travel the Nine Realms and to the systems beyond.  It won’t be forever, but he cannot say when he will return. Loki returns the heartfelt hug from years ago and wishes Thor a good journey and to find the peace he is looking for. 

He often wonders how his brother is faring.

The whoosh of air shot through your bedroom, rustling your curtains and threatening to knock the knicknacks off your dresser. Then came the orange light; glowing and radiant, forming the shape of a rectangle and illuminating the cover of darkness that spread across the walls.

A figure stepped from the portal, tall and dark-haired. His eyes were sunken in exhaustion for how the recent years had treated him. Still, a certain spark emerged from them at the sight of you.

Tucked in a comfortable blanket and curled around a pillow, your breathing was shallow. It was a breezy summer night. Your favorite, he remembered.

He stood there for a while, taking in the sight of you just within reach after so many years apart.

After watching the rise and fall of your chest over and over, he finally spoke.

“You know, I once mocked my brother when he fell in love with a midgardian.” he paused, contemplating taking a step towards you, but the fear of disturbing you won out and he remained where he stood.

“I’m afraid those words I once spoke to him now haunt me.”

Perhaps he should use this new power he found with the TVA, travel to a timeline where you and he were together. Where he had the courage to speak these words to you conscious, to face the reality that you might reject him or even love him back. He couldn’t decide which scenario he feared more. 

The happy ending neither of you got. He wishes he could, but there is still work to do.

“I love you. Always will.”

Then he reopened the orange portal and stepped through it again.

Your eyes shot open, a strange feeling washing over you that someone else might be there.

“Loki?”

But your room was empty and you were alone.
