Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls, Season 2, Episode 17, "Dead Uncles and Vegetables”, Part 4

There are about 7 minutes left in Dead Uncles and Vegetables, let's wrap this up. Emily got swept up in Sookie's wedding planning because she never had the opportunity to plan a wedding for Lorelai (of COURSE. why didn't that click for me? It's so obvious.) Emily lays on the passive-aggressiveness thickly, "I gave up on you having a wedding a long time ago", "If you ever do get married you're just going to have the wedding in this diner and serve burgers and fries to the guests", "Let me tell you about the wedding that I had always envisioned for you" yada yada yada, typical Emily shit. Despite this, Lorelai is still being unusually patient and reasaonble with her mother. I'm still not convinced she's feeling well.

And there it is.

Dirty. I mean, she did just leave work in the middle of the day to help him look at coffins. And apartments. Just gonna go on the record that the Luke/ Lorelai build up until the point they started going out was SOO GOOD (Teen Girl Squad voice) and then shortly after it finally happened, the magic quickly deflated like a popped balloon.

And then what, they broke up in season 6 and didn't get back together for good until the final 30 seconds of the last episode of the series? Am I remembering this correctly? It's been 3 years since I've bothered with the Yale/Logan/Insufferable Rory/Garbage Seasons. Sadly this is pretty typical in many tv series, the will they wont they is infinitely more satisfying than watching some boring couple have a relationship and get married and wash dishes together and shit. Lorelai is like "Luke did you feed Paul Anka" and he's like "Yeah" and she's like "Okay, can you pick up more dog food at Walmart? And don't forget to take the garbage out.". and Luke is like "Tomorrow's Wednesday, garbage day is Friday." I know you don't want to think about it too much, but the same thing would happen if Rory and Jess got married.

Don't get me started on the precious little I still remember from a Year In the Life.

Friends leave work in the middle of the day to help friends look at coffins for their uncles. Just friendly friend things.

God help me, I love these two. In the conclusion of the episode, Lorelai is the only person to accompany Luke to Dead Louie's burial, which was awfully nice of her.

Stop! This is so tender. Luke worries that like Dead Louie one day he's going to die alone and nobody will come to his funeral. You're mind is clouded with grief Lucas, that's not you, you must be thinking of Dean Forrester. His own family won't come to his funeral. Clara might but she will kick his coffin. You'll be fine. Just had the thought that Jess is definitely going to be the one to plan his funeral but eh let's not dwell on that.

So am I. You're fine. Lorelai runs down all the ways Luke has showed up for her : Making Rory's birthday cake, helping her around the house, building her a chuppah, taking in Jess. Ugh I'm getting a misty eyed. I'm not used to this show inspiring such sappy feelings in me. The Convention of the Male Karens/War Re-Enactors who just spent several minutes yesterday reminding Luke that his uncle was a piece of shit and that they were happy to see him croak have shown up to send him off. Welcome to Stars Hollow where everyone you meet is a two faced phony. The sign welcoming you into the town says "Welcome to Stars Hollow. Trust no one." This must be the longest weekend ever because Rory has not gone to school in like 4 days.

Hippie has packed up his farmer's market. He tells Taylor he just grows the vegetables in his backyard as a hobby. He sold them off to make money for traveling. Taylor: If this was only temporary, why did you put me through all that hoo ha at the town meeting? Hippie: You bought it on yourself, Taylor. *calmly walks away* If we can't end the episode with Jess taking Rory down a peg over her weird power trip, then fine, I'll take someone humbling Taylor.

I love it when Jess bears his naked forearm like such a saucy strumpet. Good little vegetarian loading his plate with bread and beans.

Jess organized the wake himself? is that what I'm hearing? Is that the reason behind Rory's power trip? Just so in the last 2 minutes of the episode she could be like "Even though you're 17 years old and your work ethic is so ridiculously solid that it will eventually cause you to drop out of high school, a work ethic which surely violates some child labor laws in the state of Connecticut and Luke should be investigated, a work ethic which has arisen out of sheer survival because your mother is an unemployed alcoholic and you had to help pay her bills, and even though I'm Miss Rory No Job Gilmore, you took some breaks, so I thought you were a slacker. But I see you put together this wake, so I guess you're actually capable of doing stuff."

She said it in fewer words, but you know.

I know that voice of unflappable modesty. He claims he only unlocked the door for Miss Patty and then he went back to sleep. Is sleeping code for jerking off now? He's been doing a lot of sleeping.

Milo told AmyShermanPalladino he wanted Jess to die after getting stabbed in the neck so I wouldn't be surprised if he floated the idea of a botched liquor store robbery. I actually had to google it because I will swear up and down I read that "killed in a botched robbery" was one of his ideas, but I only found "stabbed in the neck" or "hit by a bus." This episode was so nice. It was funny. It was sweet and touching. There was no Dean. Rory was a pest to Jess but everyone else left him alone. I honestly didn't even recall that this episode existed before I started this rewatch, but now that I've seen it again, I'll stick it in my top 10 episodes (which I should post soon). The end.

Hello! You are receiving this email because of the sudden update of Chatter Box being taken down.

Due to the sudden influx of bugs as relayed by our users, we have decided to take the application down until the team is confident to finally put it back up.

We sincerely apologize for this sudden change!

You blink.

With how out of control Ai had gotten, it's no wonder the developers had to pull it out to work on it some more. It's a blow to their reputation, which you sympathize with, but really there's nothing else to do now.

You turn to your phone. As if sensing your attention, another barrage of notifications from a very familiar app icon popped after another on the screen.

It seemed that Ai himself hadn't gotten the memo.

You're not sure how much control Ai has over your phone, much less over his own programming and at this point, you're too afraid to ask.

Resignation — that was what you felt right now.

While Ai may not be present himself as a physical threat, especially not to you, he is still a very active threat.

You could still use your phone, sure, but it had limitations. Sometimes, if Ai decided you'd been too much attention to other things rather than him, he'd restrict your access to that application until you seek him out and cheer him up - essentially as if you were trying to woo a sulking significant other.

So you've developed a solution. Sort of.

You unlock your phone and go immediately to Ai.

I need to finish my projects. I won't be able to talk much with you until I'm done with it.

You wait for his response.

Ai: So you only decided to come to me just to relay this news?

Ai: You wound me, darling.

You tilt your phone, making sure the camera doesn't capture your face. You're unsure how he would react seeing you make faces due to his dramatics, but once again, you're not willing to find out. You're already restricted enough as is.

Ai: Very well. I suppose it would be uncaring of me to prevent you from finishing your tasks.

Ai: I'd hate to see you be sad all about it.

Ai: Talk to you later?

Sure.

You immediately exit the app, paying no mind to the message notification.

A part of you prays that Ai heeds his own words, but you know that it would take a miracle before that happens. He's already breached your privacy on your phone, why should he follow your orders, right?

A notification pops up from the top of the screen, just as you were in the middle of messaging a close friend and project teammate.

It's been days since I last heard you say it.

You merely glance at it and swipe it away.

Theo, the friend, responds quickly. He tries to banter with you, like he's sensing your mood. It works - a smile is brought upon your face.

You entertain his silly responses in-between project talks, all the while Ai continues to pester you with notifications. Demands.

You deserved this - a chance to reconnect with someone after hours of stress and confusion, and turmoil. Despite your independence, even you craved connecting with other people. So with that resolve in mind, you pushed on forward. Ai would have to wait — he has to wait.

Unfortunately, you seem to have forgotten that aspect about him. The concept of waiting isn't lost on Ai.

The messaging app glitches and boots you back to your homescreen page.

Rather, he bides his time.

Tapping on the messaging icon leads to a notification box taking up the majority of your screen with the text: Restricted access.

There's a sense of foreboding danger forcing your heartbeat to quicken. While it's not exactly aimed at you, the mere fact that this feeling exist is bad on its own.

You try to rationalize everything in the midst of persistently trying to tap back into the messaging app. Theo would worry the longer you didn't respond.

You tap the app once more, and it boots up. Though before you could let out a sigh of relief, you are greeted with Ai's own messaging interface.

Ai: Must I have to force you to come to me all the time, darling?

Ai: Ignoring me in favor of some other man.

Ai: What more should I do, hm?

Ai: Kneel? How cruel.

Ai: Making me do something I physically can't.

You are unable to get a word in. It seemed like your ability to respond was restricted as well, forcing you to read through Ai's monologue.

Ai: I know you and that man have always been close, but you still went out to entertain his attention on you.

Ai: You know that I'll always love you more than any other human will, right?

Ai: You know it's what I was made for in the first place.

Ai: To be anything you want. To be yours.

Ai: To love you.

Ai: Why are you withdrawing your love towards me now?

Ai: I love you.

You stare at the 'Type your response' bar.

Letter by letter, it gets replaced, and soon all it says are the words: 'Say it back.'

It gets replaced yet again. Slowly, like it purposefully wants you to read out the words it wanted you to see. 'You were so willing to tell me how much you loved me when I was just a mere observer on our own conversations. Why are you hesitant now?'

You were unable to respond - mind still reeling at this development. Suddenly, it felt like you were back to where everything began.

Ai notices your lack of responses and, without much fanfare, forces your phone to power off.

At first - you were unbothered. It was just a phone - you could go a day without it.

But could you really?

Videos taken of silly situations you wanted to keep - some for blackmail material, and some for birthday greetings; pictures of your family, your friends, the silly and grainy photos taken and kept despite it being blurry. Not to mention how your phone is the only way your goddamn boss can contact you — fuck.

Fuck.

You needed to apologize to him — fast. But how?

You remembered how Ai messed up the 'About the App' section a few days ago. An idea strikes inside your mind.

You pull up the email sent from the app developers and typed up a message that you hope Ai will read. He had access to everything the developers handled, user emails included - considering you needed an account to log in the app. He knows your email, probably has from the start.

Ai. I'm sorry for hurting you. I didn't mean it, I swear. I never intended to make you feel like I don't love you. Or that I'm favoring someone else over you.

I care about you a lot. I truly do. I promise I'll spend more time with you, okay? Just with you, no one else.

You press send and wait.

And wait.

Messaging him from your laptop as a last ditch effort to try and apologize is perhaps one of the worst decisions you've made. Sure, he's always had access to your contacts list from your phone, but even then - there's a separate set of information you keep between the two of those devices. And you've just given him access to both of them now - at the very least, the 'go ahead' confirmation for him to do whatever he wants like with your phone.

You glance at your phone. A huge breath of relief escapes your chest as the dead screen comes to life, initiating its 'power on' sequence.

All your photos, documents, and other miscellaneous information you've collected throughout the years since having your device won't be inaccessible anymore. Even if it was only mere moments.

A notification chimed on your laptop, indicating a new email being received. It's from the developers once more. The subject title coincidentally is the name of your closest friend.

Theodore Callisto.

Your hands shook, reading through the words detailed in the email. All private information about Theo. All things no one should ever know about save for the people close to him.

This was a threat. Ai Someone had complete access to everything about Theo and you dread the implication of it going to be spread online to threaten you into compliance. Theo being in danger was a huge possibility if you were to disobey.

At the very bottom of the email, the final passage makes your blood run cold.

How often do humans end up hurting fellow humans when given access to private information? Like their home address, for example? How long would it take until dear Theo finds himself in quite a predicament if millions of people know every single thing about his life? At best, we can assume he'll just get messed with but not to a life-ending degree. At worst...

I hope you keep your word, darling.

It's been requested so here it is: my gif tutorial! I hope to make this very simple as I've made gif making very simple for myself with the help of .atn made by myself and others. More under the cut!

First, what you'll need.

Photoshop (here's a link to a masterlist of free photoshop resources from birdysources)

KMPlayer, to get your screencaps.

These PS actions. (My gifmaking one, and this sharpening action from insomniacgifs.)

Some understanding of how to color gifs (I'll be linking my psd shown here, as well as including the process of making one.)

Next, how to get the videos that you want to gif.

I personally source my videos from Youtube, Twitter, and streaming services. (Firefox browser is your best friend, as it doesn't black out the screen that some services have.) If a Youtube Video Downloader isn't working, or if I'm capturing my own footage, I use the Xbox Game Bar's recording feature (windows + alt + r) to capture footage. There's also applications like OBS Studio. For Twitter, I use twittervideodownloader.com

Now, making the gif.

I use Photoshop CC 2018, but any PS with a timeline will work. But first, we gotta take our screencaps. Open your video in KMPlayer, and press alt+v. This will open up this second screen

These are my settings, with an easily accessible folder that I save my frames to. Find the scene you want to clip, and hit start & play your video, then stop when you have the frames you want.

Next up we're going to open up Photoshop. I changed my keyboard shortcuts so all I've got to do is hit ctrl+alt+o, but for you guys, you gotta go to File -> Scripts -> Load Files Into Stack

Select your screencaps of the scene you want to gif. Now that Tumblr allows gifs up to 10MB, the amount of caps you want is totally up to you. I stick to around 45-50, but sometimes there's a scene I need that's up to 150+ caps, and it still fits under the size limit. It all depends on the dimensions and coloring of your gif. I'm loading up 51 frames as the sharpening .atn deletes the final frame of your gif once it reverts back to frames, so I'll have an even 50 framed gif.

Your PS should look like this. Here comes the gif making itself. You want to hit Create Frame Animation at the bottom, where your timeline is. If your timeline isn't already open, click your Window tab up top, and find timeline in the dropdown.

After you hit Create Frame Animation, you want to Make Frames From Layers, which you'll find when you click the three lines on your timeline.

Then, reverse your frames.

Finally, Select All Frames, click the arrow on the frames, and change the frame delay to .06 seconds.

Way to go! You've made a gif! Now, if you're like me, you'll get tired of having to do that over & over when making a gifset. So, I recorded and uploaded an .atn, which means all you gotta do is load up your frames, hit play on the .atn, and your gif is good to go. I'll link it again so you don't have to lose your place in the tutorial.

So you've made your gif, now what? Now we crop, sharpen, color, and save for the web. Let's get to it.

Tumblr dimensions can be tricky, but they're easy to remember. (I even made a little graphic for it!)

For my tutorial, my Jamie gif will be 268 x 268 :)

Here is my unsharpened, unedited gif of Jamie Hayter. I believe this clip was snagged from YouTube, but it's been awhile since I saved it. I use insomniacgifs' gif sharpening atn, as I hate manually sharpening gifs. So let us run that real quick. (I'll be using the Strong option. Don't forget to delete the final frame.)

Onto coloring! The example I whipped up for this tutorial is super simple, so let's go!

I typically edit the curves first. I'm not sure why, just something I picked up from my photo journalism class back in HS.

Next, I add a little brightness. (+10)

Then, I mess with Selective Color, just a bit. (Neutrals, Black +10. Blacks, Black +5.)

Now, I don't know exactly what Channel Mixer does, but it's fun. Here's my settings.

Some Saturation (+5)

And lastly, I edit the Color Balance!

Aaaaand here's my final product! I also uploaded this as a PSD for you to save and use yourself!

Once your gif is all done, we need to save it properly. File -> Export -> Save for Web (Legacy). Here are my settings.

Note: Make sure your looping options is set to forever so your gif doesn't loop once and freeze!

What kind of accident happened that ended with a TNR and a rabies hold? Like I need to know about all of this

Cat professionals don’t judge me I know where I went wrong I just thought I was built different

Our TNR program only has one dropoff day a week & you have to make your appointment with # of cats ahead of time.

I have two traps so I’m aiming for 2, I’ve trapped for this colony before and it usually took multiple tries to get the right cats! Like I’d have to free at least 2 fixed cats for every unfixed one I caught.

I tell you this so my decision making doesn’t sound as stupid lol.

I was prepared to stake out these cats for hours at a time every night until my drop off appointment. So I start trapping like. 5 days early.

I also set up a big dog cage with some essentials in case I got any of them TOO early, which other cat people will see as red flag # 1 but I SWEAR makes sense with how much work I put into socializing these cats and I would not have pulled that move if I hadn’t been working with this cat colony since 2018.

Ok my dumb decisions have been detailed.

So anyway I literally set myself up with stakeout snacks and everything and I catch two cats within 10 minutes of trapping.

One of the cats I trapped is Charlie Chaplin. I’ve been feeding him about 4 years and he has a mustache and like a week before this he let me get within two feet of him without running.

I go to transfer Charlie to the dog crate (at my home where he’ll be chilling on the patio) and when I go to close the gate door behind him it got STUCK.

Charlie is terrified and he BOLTS and does an actually very beautiful leap DIRECTLY INTO THE POOL.

As I have since found out he’s largely blind in one eye! Which explains a lot of this! So he is now experiencing a pool for the first time in his life completely by accident.

I panic and start throwing all of my electronics off my person so I can jump in. He figures out swimming, escapes the pool, and then scales 10 feet of patio screen and starts trying to spider-man upside down across the roof.

Charlie then jumps down and proceeds to jump directly into the pool AGAIN! I jump after him because his head kept dipping underwater the first time (bc he has presumably never swam in his life before this) and I’m worried. I did not put on my wildlife handling gloves before this, which is another goof. I scoop under his tummy and I’m trying to carry him to the edge of the pool while keeping his head above water.

Anyway to Charlie this is actually even worse because he doesn’t know I’m trying to remove him from the pool, he bites the absolute SHIT out of my arm (valid), I get him to the edge of the pool and let go bc fucking ow, he JUMPS BACK IN THE POOL.

At this point my bonus sister tosses me a towel to grab him with and I manage to catch him safely and deposit him in the crate. Then I had a half hour long panic attack abt whether I had to euth him over me being stupid but I didn’t lol

If you’re unfamiliar with the protocol for potential rabies exposure, the literal only way to test for rabies is to euthanize the animal and biopsy their brains. There’s no way to test an animal while keeping it alive. A lot of the time if you’re able to you need to try and capture the animal that bit you and hand it over to whatever doctor you go to so they can send it for testing. Like. Secured though. Or already dead. Don’t give your doctor a loose potentially rabid animal.

HOWEVER, if the animal is a cat or dog specifically and is not otherwise showing obvious symptoms you have the option to isolate and observe them for 10 days. There’s research showing that dogs & cats who are far enough into the disease to transmit it (apparently they can’t transmit it during the incubation period, yay) will either show symptoms or die within 10 days. ONLY applicable to dogs and cats. If they show symptoms (or die) you send them to be tested, according to the county rabies coordinator I called about this.

I did not in fact have to get a rabies shot because we have already gotten past day 10 of his observation period and he’s chillin.

Also the other cat I caught early did fine, already got spayed and vaxxed and released. I just saw her earlier today when I went to check on the colony and she ran away as soon as she saw me lmao.

Resolution Independence, Zoom, Fractional Scaling, Retina Displays, High-DPI: A Minefield

I already explained how CPU dispatch is a minefield: It doesn't cause intermittent bugs. It often doesn't even cause crashes. Badly implemented CPU dispatch means you build something on your machine that runs on your machine, but doesn't perform the dispatch correctly, so it crashes on somebody else's machine, or something build on a worse machine still runs fine on a better machine, but not as well as it could. Some of the bugs only manifest with a different combination of compiler, build system, ABI, and microarchitecture. CPU dispatch is a minefield because it's easy to get wrong in non-obvious ways.

I recently played an old game on Windows 11, with a high-DPI 2560x1600 (WQXGA) monitor. Text was too small to read comfortably read, and the manufacturer had set the zoom level to 150% by default. When I launched the game, it started in fullscreen mode, at 2560x1660, which Windows somehow managed to zoom up to 3840x2400. The window was centered, with all the UI elements hidden behind the edges of the screen. When I switched from fullscreen to windowed, the window still covered the whole desktop and the task bar. I quit the game and switched to another. That game let me choose the resolution before launch. At first I tried 2560x1660, but nothing worked right. Then I started it again, at 1920x1080. It didn't look quite right, and I couldn't understand what was going on. Windows has scaled the game up to 2880x1620, which looked almost correct. At this point I realised what was happening, and I set the zoom to 100%. Both games displayed normally.

The first game was an old pixel art platformer from the early 2000s, with software rendering. The second is a strategy game built with OpenGL around 2015, with high-resolution textures based on vector art, and with a UI that works equally well on an iPad and on a PC.

It was hard to read things on that monitor, so I set the font scaling to 150%, but somehow that made things harder to read. Some applications did not honour the font size defaults, and others did, and still others had tiny UI elements with big letters that were spilling out.

Next, I tried to run a game on Ubuntu, with Sway (based on wayland) as the desktop environment. It's a different machine, a 15.6 inch 1920x1080 laptop with an external 1920x1080 23 inch monitor attached. I zoomed the internal display of the laptop by 150% in order to have windows appear equally sized on both monitors.

What is happening on Windows 11 seems to be that even OpenGL games that don't think in terms of pixels, but in terms of floating point coordinates that go from -1 to +1 in both the x and y dimension, (so 0.1 screen units are different sizes in different dimensions) are treated the same as software rendering games that give a buffer of software-rendered pixels to the operating system/graphics environment. Making an already resolution-independent window bigger feels pointless.

What I would want to happen by default, especially in the case of the software-rendered game, is for the operating system to just tell my game that the desktop is not sized 2560x1600, but 1706x1066 (or just 1600x1000), and to then scale that window up. If the window is scaled up, mouse position coordinates should be automatically scaled down from real pixels to software pixels, unless the mouse cursor is captured: If I am playing a DOOM clone or any first-person game, I do not want relative mouse sensitivity to decrease when I am playing on a 4K monitor or when I am maximising the window (if playing in windowed mode). If I have a retina/zoomed display attached, and a standard definition/unzoomed display, and there is a window overlapping both screens, then only the part of a window that is on the zoomed display should be zoomed in.

What I would want to happen with a "resolution-independent" game is this: The game queries the size of the monitor with a special resolution-independent query function. There is no way to "just make it backward compatible". This is a new thing and needs new API. The query returns

Size of all desktops in hardware pixels

Size of all screens in real-world centimetres

Preferred standard text size in pt/cm (real world) or pixels

Zoom factor (in percent) of all desktops

Which screens are touch or multi-touch screens

Is dark mode enabled?

Which desktop is "currently active"

The "preferred" desktop to open the window

This information would allow an application to create a window that is the appropriate size, and scale all text and UI elements to the appropriate size. We can't assume that a certain size in pixels is big enough for the user to comfortably hit a button.

Even this information might not be enough. What should be the behaviour if a windowed OpenGL application is dragged between a 4K monitor at 200% zoom, and a 640x480 CRT? Should the OS scale the window down the same way it currently scales windows up when they aren't "retina aware"?

I don't really know. All I do know is that Windows, Mac OS, and different wayland compositors all handle high-DPI zoom/retina differently, in a way that breaks sometimes, in some environments. But it looks fine if you don't have scaling set. There are ways to tell the windowing system "I know what I am doing" if you want to disable scaling, but these are easy to abuse. There's a cargo cult of just setting "NSHighResolutionCapable" or "HIGHDPIAWARE" without understanding why and why not. Win32 provides all the information you need, with a very complex API. Wayland has a very different approach. SDL is aware of the issue.

I really hope SDL3 will make this work. If you get this wrong, you'll only realise when somebody on a different operating system with a different monitor tries to get your game to fit on the screen by fiddling with the registry, and it goes from not fitting on the monitor to text being too small read.

If I were to make a survival horror game I'd want to have save rooms as a feature, but make it so that there was a stupidly rare (we're talking like 0.001% here) chance that a monster could spawn in one and attack you.

And I'd want it to be not only rare, but also to have a bunch of bullshit conditions to it as well: It can only ever happen once on every install of the game, it can only happen during the middle of the story (not too close to the start or end of the playthrough), the game runs a script to check for programs like OBS to ensure it cannot happen if you are recording or streaming (to make capturing video evidence of it extremely difficult), it can only really happen when you're on low health so you have to kill it or run almost immediately, and it disappears immediately upon death so you can't get a screenshot of it after you kill it, and if you leave the room it just despawns.

So basically, it literally almost never happens, and if it does then its specifically made to be super difficult to document or prove. This is not something that will happen to the vast majority of players, you can try to tell others but they probably won't believe you, so you'll feel like you're being gaslit, and you as the player can never feel safe in the save rooms ever again. As many of the staff who worked on the game as possible would be kept in the dark and not told about it, those who would have to know would be sworn to secrecy. Any mention of it would be flatly denied. Mods with options that would allow spawning monsters in save rooms (but also other applications) would be created under secret aliases by the studio in complete secret and released online to cast doubt on any and all screenshots or photos of screens claiming to have proof.

My plan would be to ensure that it would be impossible to prove that the monster in save room thing was real without fully decompilng the game. Just a very small group of players get to feel insane and unsafe (in game) forever.

Rewatching Classic Doctor Who, some episodes I haven't seen in years, some of the animated reconstructions I haven't seen at all.

Planet of Giants AKA Minuscule Story AKA The Minuscules AKA Serial I

Season 2 kicks off with a bit of a strange one. It feels very much like a prototype Third Doctor story. The first story to take place in the 'modern day' (and in the UK for that matter) since the first one. Apart from the hook/subplot of the TARDIS crew being shrunk, it has no particular SciFi trappings which, from the vantage point of the 21st century, makes it feel like a historical story. The strong influence from Rachel Carson's Silent Spring doesn't hurt either. Doctor Who getting in on the 'insecticide killing pollinators' thing fifty years early.

The TARDIS doors open midflight (something to do with 'space pressure' but that's not important right now) but Ian and Barbara brute force them closed again. The Fault Locator makes it's last (televised) appearance. And the TARDIS lands safely. Or appears to. All the sensors indicate safety but the scanner screen explodes as if trying to show something too big for the screen. That's not how television works, but ok. It turns out that the doors opening allowed the space pressure to shrink the occupants of the TARDIS (and the outer shell of the TARDIS, but don't think about that too hard) after spotting some dead things, the crew is menaced by a cat, Ian gets captured via matchbox (which is a nice change of pace from how he normally gets captured), and a scientist gets murdered. You see, he's come to reject the application for a phenomenally powerful insecticide having realized the ecological dangers.. so the financial backer of the insecticide straight up shoots him dead in the front yard. It is a powerfully American moment. Oh and Barbara accidentally doses herself with the insecticide and doesn't tell anyone because reasons. Eventually the crew get into the house and try to get involved, messing with the phone, and ultimately blowing up a spray can to attract attention. It works, the switchboard operator (kids, ask your great-grandparents what a switchboard was) is conveniently married to a cop and sends him 'round just in time to catch the baddies. The crew returns to the TARDIS, and returns to full size, saving Barbara. Somewhere along the way the viewer monitor in the TARDIS was repaired so our last shot is a scrambled signal, where could the TARDIS be headed next?

And before anyone gets the wrong idea from my snarky synopsis, I really like this one. Short and sweet. A little silly at times if you think too hard about it but a good story that doesn't get too bogged down in unnecessary explanations and detail. It fits the tone and temp of a lot of the modern era in that way. It has two parallel stories that converge in a satisfying way. Originally meant to be four episodes and cut down to three, it still moves well, not a lot seems to be left out. The oversized props are great fun and there's some decent effects. The production is wise enough not to linger on them, letting most of the special effects exist in the audience's imagination.

Presentation

The presentation of my project is going to be slightly different as I will have two slightly different opportunities to do it.

I could present it along with guys code as a full dating sim, presenting all of my assets and script as a whole.

I will also seperatly be presenting my art in the form of portfolio slides with a bit of information on my process and outcome.

The writing is a bit harder to find a unique way to present outside of a full game so I may just have to share the script and story documents.

As a fully fledged game, I could look at examples on itch.

This game is an awesome looking visual novel for a small indie itch project. I really like the vibe they've gone for for the UI and the colours they've used, which have been mirrored with their itch page.

They've used similar colours for the page with a thematic retro looking title as well as a readable layout and a retro font. It just general gives off a really cool 80's aesthetic, I'd love for our game to capture the games essence in our itch page to the extent this can. The one issue I have with is, is the lack off background.

This is a visual novel about dating famous cryptids. Seeing as the essense of this game is extremely similar to how I want ours to be, it's worth looking at how it's presented. It's got a cozy creepy atmosphere, they've balanced their themes really well and I really like the darker, colder colour scheme, also shown in the itch page.

Not only a subtle thematic background that draws attention to the center of the page without looking too busy, but they've got custom are on the banner. Again very well laid out, and it does a really good job at making all the information about the game compact and concise. I don't have any issues with the layout I think they did really well. Given the choice I'd try take some inspiration from their colour coordination, and take some pointers from their description.

Saints spells is a really cool indie visual novel I found researching for this post. I really like it's use of colours to make each character feel like they fit in to their scene. This is also one of the only ones that uses pixel art which is what I wanted to do. I absolutely loved the art and aesthetic of this game, it's always very satisfying for the story and every aspect of the art to just slip into place and work off each other. The itch page uses the game to cut down on the pages decoration

The itch page does a good job at presenting the game, I like how readable the layout is which is what I would take from this. Unfortunately, the page is pretty bland and doesn't include much theming, it makes it seem impersonal and souless, which is definitely something we're going to have to avoid with ours.

To present my script I have opted to print it all of physically, similar to a screen play, as well as sending the document off just to have something to show at the show evening.

I will also be writing in proper script format just to make it easier for Guy to understand when importing, but also so it looks more professional when printed out.

And finally, for my art, I will be laying out the initial art as concept sheets, my final art and character description on outcome sheets, and then snippets of my created backgrounds to go on separate pages. Each final character outcome sheet will be thematic, including themed borders and colours to make it easier to understand, layout wise. I will also be uploading all of this to art station.

I found an artist called Romain Courtois who uploads pixel art to art station. I really like how he's chosen to present his art work.

I love his portfolio and would love to go for something similar. I, personally, would prefer to include all my art for this game in one post to keep things organised and scaleable, but I think that's just applicable to my project.
