Raven! I don't usually do the long caption thing, but I just wanted share my appreciation for this mare today. She's 21 years old this year and has her fair share of struggles with navicular and arthritis, but she's still the most generous, honest soul. I hardly ride her much anymore aside from strolling around and schooling bareback at the walk when I can find the time, and she gives as much of herself as she can every time. Today was the first time we trotted in a long while and she moved into it all on her own and seemed to be the most comfortable she's been in a long time. I know it seems like a minor thing, trotting, but I was so happy she felt like she could with me. WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH KICKOFF

Happy Women’s History Month! Throughout the month of March, we’ll be highlighting notable women of the silent film era, who worked with the Wharton Brothers and their studio or was associated with Ithaca in some way. 

We’re kicking off this series with none other than Mary Pickford, who started in the industry when it was just developing and helped shape it into what it is today.

Mary Pickford (1892-1979) was a pioneer in early cinema as an actress, producer, and businesswoman. Deemed “America’s sweetheart,” Pickford’s stardom began in theatre before going into film after meeting director D.W. Griffith of the Biograph Company. Throughout the 1910s, she worked with various studios, generating fame and success, allowing her to get paid more than the standard at the time and gaining control over the productions of her films. One of her most notable works is Tess of the Storm Country (1914 and 1922) based on the novel by Ithaca native, Grace Miller White. Pickford starred in her last silent film, My Best Girl (1927), before transitioning to making talkies - winning an Oscar for Best Actress in Coquette (1929). 

In addition to acting, Mary Pickford was also a film producer and philanthropist. She founded an independent distribution company, United Artists, in 1919 with other early film trailblazers: Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. She helped form the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and created the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization that provided assistance to those with financial needs and limited resources. For all her achievements and contributions to the film industry, Mary Pickford received the Academy Honorary Award in 1976.

I've been super MIA today but it was for a great reason! . My niece had her 6th birthday the other day and she had asked if she could have her party at my house. He admires Sam's strength and courage. He hopes to take a piece for himself. Maybe it’ll do him some good, after this is all over.

“Take a picture, it'll last longer.” Sam opens one eye, but Bucky doesn't look away. He pushes past the flirt, knowing if he entertains it.

Well.

He's an opportunistic man, if anything.

Or, Bucky's old life tracks him down to Chinatown, NYC, and Sam kind of throws a wrench into things.

Is this my life?

I’m sitting here. All that is running through my head is that I cannot believe this is my life. One year ago I couldn’t afford a .99 pair of flip flops for myself. I joined this company less than a year ago and I am going to be able to pay my mortgage, pay for a Father’s Day gift, and have left over money. My only regret? I wished I would have joined sooner... I can’t stop the surreal-ness is the reality. My goal is to make sure NJ has the best summer before she starts school and I’m going to work my tail off to make it happen. All because I said yes...
