Happy Asian and Pacific Islander Month to our queens!

Costume Breakdown: South Korean Production

Finally got around to doing a write-up on the South Korean costumes! So without further ado, a few general notes:

The costumes were seemingly all made by UK-based teams and makers. More detail below on each.

As a result, there’s not really any major design changes from the more recent UK costumes. Unless otherwise noted, you can assume that most details are pretty standard.

As always, the boots were custom La Duca. They were most likely embellished by Crystalled by Jane, who had done all the UK boots from very early on, but I couldn’t confirm that. Cleves has the usual thigh highs, but everyone else has a single strap (the double thickness) which the UK has slowly been standardizing to.

The actors, with a few exceptions, seem to be wearing their own hair rather than wigs.

The actors have the Roman numeral earrings.

The actors have the same glitter IEMs style as the UK cast.

As usual, the actors have makeup looks that line up with the popular styles in their country. In line with K-beauty trends, these queens generally have more subdued makeup looks than what we've usually seen in the US/UK and sometimes Aus.

Aragon: 이아름솔 (Lee Arum-soul) and 손승연 (Son Seung-yeon/Sonnet) I can’t confirm who made these costumes. They were possibly made by WhiteStar Costume, who made the most recent West End cast change Aragon costumes. It also might have been made by Rainbow Mascots, who made Jarneia Richard Noel’s costume for Hampton Court. Just like all other recent UK costumes, there’s black threaded through the chains of the necklace. Lee Arum-soul has her straight bob with peak-a-boo black/blonde coloring. Son Seung-yeon has her curled blonde hair. For both the front sections are just pulled loosely back; this isn't out of the norm historically, but it does differ from the French braids that are slowly being standardized in the US/UK/sometimes NCL.

Boleyn: 김지우 (Kim Ji Woo/Jennifer) and 배수정 (Pae Su-jeong/Shannon) Most recent Boleyn costumes have been made by White Star Costumes, but I’m not positive that these are. This costume uses the darker monotone green vinyl. It was introduced for Broadway with reopening, but has only been making its' way over to the UK in recent months. The skirts are also proportionally wider and longer than most recent skirts. Kim Ji-Woo has her bangs styled to the side and front. They both have green clip-in hair extensions.

Seymour: 박혜나 (Park Hye-na) and 박가람 (Park Ga-ram) These costumes were most likely made by Kirsti Reid. Just like all other recent UK costumes, there’s black threaded through the chains of the necklace.

Park Hye-na has a little bit stronger of a side part to accommodate her widow's peak, while Park Ga-ram has a stronger center part (although usually still styled slightly to the side). The softly styled front is in line with typical US wigs, but differs from most UK which usually is pulled fairly straight back.

Cleves: 김지선 (Kim Ji sun) and 최현선 (Choi Hyun-sun) The costumes seem to have been made by Paul Aspinall. He has been the primary UK Cleves costume maker in recent years.

Both queens have a front bump with small buns, in the same style as what Rachel Rawlinson wears on the West End. They also have a temporary red hairspray used on the front and separate red bright red extensions added to the back of their hairstyle, although it seems like there's been some variation and change in those specifics even throughout the run.

Howard: 김려원 (Kim Ryeo-won) and 솔지 (Solji) The costumes may have been made by Rainbow Mascots, who made Aimie Atkinson’s costume for Hampton Court, but I can’t confirm that. Note that Solji has flat boots due to an injury. Just like most other productions, Kim Ryeo-won and Solji have a ponytail hairpiece attached over their own hair. At the time of their debut, every other current Howard’s hair was pulled directly back into that ponytail piece. Instead of that, both have a side part with hair pulled to either side and a few small wispy bangs. (Note: Lou Henry has since debuted with a side swept front style as well)

Parr: 유주혜 (Yoo Ju-hye) and ​​홍지희 (Hong Ji-hee) The costumes were made by Ashleigh Cherry Costumes, who has been the primary UK Parr costume maker in recent years.

Both actors have the same front bump, braid, and back ponytail that we’ve been seeing become standardized for non-Black Parr actors. The ponytail sits lower here than for most other variations of the hairstyle.

Happy Lughnasadh!

February 1st - March 20th

Today is the second day of Lughnasadh for us in the Southern Hemisphere! ✨

🦋 Origin 🦋

Lughnasadh (Loo-Nas-Ah) is the celebration of the First Harvest. It is celebrated in the middle of summer to late summer, between Midsummer and Mabon. 🍁 It is a celebration of seeing what you’ve grown and cultivating it for the winter season. This tradition came from Irish Celts and named from the Celtic Sun God, Lugh.

Lughnasadh comes from two origins of Lugh’s mythology. One is that Lugh wanted to a festival to honour his foster mother, Tailtiu (Tal-Chi-Uh). She had died clearing the Irish plains to prepare them for agriculture.

The other origin is that it was to celebrate Lugh’s marriage. It’s also a time where couples would make a “temporary marriage” which would be only for a year, until the end of the next years festival.

It is also known as Lammas in the Anglo Saxon tradition. Early Christians would take a loaf of bread to a priest to be blessed on August 1st. This loaf of bread was called loaf mass, which the where Lammas came from.

🍇 Celebration 🍇

Every source says that it was either a celebration of funerals or of marriage, but it’s always a festival of Lugh.

Ways that you can celebrate are:

Baking or buying a loaf of bread to celebrate the grain harvest. 🍞

Eating seasonal fruits / veggies. 🍒🍇

Putting colours of yellow, green, orange into your life or onto your altar. 🌻

Using crystals of red, yellow and orange. Carnelian, amber, citrine, and clear quartz for example. 🍓

Using symbolism of scythes, sunflowers, grain (which could be bread!) on your altar. 🌾

Gathering with friends for a potluck! Celebrate summers abundance and take this moment for rest! 🌼 Lughnasadh themed items include: bread, grains (like quinoa), berries, fruit, wine and beer.

Making corn dollies to hang around the home as an offering for a good first harvest, and asking deity (such as Lugh) for blessings. 🌽

Day Forty-seven

The time spent at Applecross Campsite has been very enjoyable and it's definitely a place I'd love to return to sometime. But the weather is finally clearing up so it's time to crack back at it!

After having one last glorious hot shower and a good breakfast, and ensuring my brakes are tightened up, it's back on the bike and almost directly out of the campsite the road leads on to Applecross Pass. One of the highest roads in the UK, it's a climb up over the hills passing over 2000ft.

The gradient isn't too bad at first, and whilst it's slow and sweaty going I'm able to make aome fair progress as the climb heads up over the initial foothills, with some nice views behind me of the bay and islands over the water.

Up and up and up, the road starts twisting around as it gets steeper, carving its way up the moorland hills towards the craggy hilltops ahead, with plenty of pretty streams bubbling their way down the hillside around me.

Before long the really steep ascents start to crop up, with a few alpine-style hairpins going around the jagged cliffsides. I keep pausing to look back down the hills as the views during the climb make the work very worthwhile.

I'd been advised by a few folk that I was fortunate to be heading over in this direction, as the other side was far steeper. And I manage to surprise myself by rounding a few more corners and arriving at the summit viewpoint around an hour and a half after setting off. Not bad!

The reward for reaching the top is a stellar ciew of Skye across the water, which is savoured awhile before rounding the corner and beginning the descent through the infamous Bealach na Ba.

Wow. Today I'd been expecting a rough climb, but I hadn't been expecting the incredible view and amazing ride down this twisting, glorious ride down.

The valley floor thousands of feet below has the meandering Russel Burn twisting its way along, with the audes framed by some beautifully craggy mountainsides. Along these, the road loops and twists back and forth on its route down to Loch Kishorn far below.

A good few folk I've spoken to reiterated how challenging this section was on their journey through it, and yes, in cars and campervans this is a real tough road to navigate around in places. But on a bicycle...

I'm not sure I can really express how incredible riding down that road is on a bike. I had an idiot grin on my face the entire way down, the stunning scenery combined with some truly joyous riding made it an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. Pictures can't do it justice.

It's all downhill and minimal effort as the road zooms down around the hillside and past the River Kishorn, before finally coming to an end at Tornapress. I have a good few tears to wipe away where my eyes have been streaming horizontally from the wind rushing past my face, but the smile stays plastered on as I rejoin the traffic on the A896, and the climbs begin once more.

It's a slog up through another valley and across some more moorland before riding down to Lochcarron, where I take a much needed break for a spot of lunch. Unfortunately the weather has decided to head back in this afternoon and the waterproofs are aoin deployed, and by the time I get going again it's turned into a torrential downpour.

Despite the rain, it's some good going here, with the ride up around the far wnd if the loch through Strathcarron being some of the flattest stretch of road I've been on in weeks, and I get ro enjoy putting the miles in regardless of how soggy I am.

Around to the other aide of the loch and deapite a couple of stiff hills being thrown in, the scenery is lovely to ride by. The road by the waterside is bracketed with a steep rocky cliffside that still manages to have plenty of vegetation, and even has a tunnel for me to eide through at one point. And with the sun trying to break through and ahine down on Lochcarron across the water, it's a lovely sight to ride along to.

I turn off the busier road by Achmore to continue around the coast, and the scenery changes once again into aome really lush vegetation with dense trees and ferns all around the roadside. After weeks of moors, it's a very pleasant and welcome surprise to be cycling through tunnels of greenery once more.

As the road passes Craig, I get a beautiful glimpse of the massive hills over the water where the road earlier had descended down, having now ridden all the way around to the opposite side of the water.

There are a few more climbs through the woodlands south of Loch Carron, but it's reasonable going overall, with the rain having desisted and the verdant greenery being very enjoyable to ride through, and I cook up a quick dinner by Duirinish.

A bit further on by Erbusaig, I finally get a glimpse over the water ahead to see the Isle of Skye wreathed in clouds with shafts of sunlight bursting down all around it. Whilst the Highlands offers stunning view after stunning view, this looks like something out of an art gallery.

With the evening approaching, and Google estimating 3474ft / 1048m of ascent climbed today, I think a bit of a lie down has been earned! Fortunately I find a nice little patch of woods in the hills around Kyle of Lochalsh and get setup with some nice soft forest floor to rest up on.

Though whilst setting up camp for the night, and hear a bellow from around the corner, and 10 steps from my tent is a ridiculously pretty view. The noisy seal in the water below dives back down, and I'm left with a gorgeous sight of the forested hills around the water, with a spectacular view of Skye looming across the Inner Sound. What a view!

And what a day! We'll see what tomorrow brings!

A thief in New Zealand took the unusual step of leaving his contact details at the site of his crime. The man reserved a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall at a record shop in Christchurch, leaving his name and phone number, before robbing the till. He was a regular customer at the shop and already had several records on order.

2008 - Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne was suing US Republican presidential candidate John McCain for using one of his songs without permission. Browne claimed the use of his song Running on Empty in an advert was an infringement of copyright and would lead people to conclude he endorses McCain. Browne was seeking more than $75,000 (£40,000) in damages.

1999 - Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin topped a chart of Britain's most bootlegged musicians, compiled by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), after identifying 384 bootleg titles featuring Led Zeppelin performances. The bootleg chart was complied from the BPI's archive of some 10,000 recordings seized over the past 25 years. The Beatles came in second with 320 entries, other acts listed included The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd.

1979 - Anita Pallenberg

The New York Post reported that Anita Pallenberg (the wife of Keith Richards) was linked to a witches coven in South Salem, New York where Richards owned a house. A policeman claimed he was attacked by a flock of black-hooded, caped people and a local youth claimed he had been invited by Pallenburg to take part in ‘pot smoking sex orgies’. Locals also claimed they found ‘ritualistic stakes’ and small animals that had been ‘sacrificed’ near the house.

1974 - Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 461 Ocean Boulevard, a No.3 hit in the UK. The house featured on the album cover is 461 Ocean Boulevard in the town of Golden Beach, Florida (near Miami) where Clapton lived while making the album.

1973 - Paul Williams

Former Temptations singer Paul Williams was found dead in his car, after shooting himself. He owed $80000 in taxes and his celebrity boutique business had failed.

1969 - Woodstock Festival

The final day of the 3 day Woodstock Festival took place at Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York. Acts who appeared included Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, John Sebastian, Sha Na Na, Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish, The Band, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter and Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Over 186,000 tickets had been sold but on the first day, the flimsy fences and ticket barriers had come down. Organizers announced the concert would be a free event, prompting thousands more to head for the concert.

1968 - Doors

The Doors started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Waiting For The Sun. The group's third album spawned their second US No.1 single, 'Hello, I Love You'.

1968 - Young Rascals

The Rascals (formerly the Young Rascals), started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'People Got To Be Free'. The group had thirteen US top 40 hits.

1965 - The Byrds

The Byrds were forced to cancel a concert during their UK tour at The Guildhall, Portsmouth when only 250 of the 4,000 tickets had been sold.

1964 - The Beatles

Glasgow council in Scotland announced that all boys and men with Beatle styled haircuts would have to wear bathing caps after a committee was told that hair from 'Beatle-cuts' was clogging the pools filters.
