I'm going to have on as much of Many A True Nerd's playthrough of Starfield as I can until he touches on something I haven't done, at which point I will do a high precision backflip away from the screen.

(Incidentally, the "high precision backflip" to avoid spoilers originates from another YouTuber called NakeyJakey reviewing The Last of Us Part 2. I remembered it as a "tactical backflip," but the point is I now associate avoiding spoilers with backflips.)

please, please, please can everyone on this site just learn how to make their points without insulting other people? can't we just be kind?

(re: me disliking mods that add a truce between mr. house and the brotherhood of steel) oh, goopy goblin gamer brain is an admittedly niche reference to a nakey jakey video that in its original context describes his own tongue-in-cheek dislike of story-driven game elements that distract or interrupt action-packed moment-to-moment gameplay, but which has since wormed its way into my vocabulary to describe overly harsh distaste for basically any kind of in-game pushback on the player's unquestioned power or control over the game world that can't be circumvented through sheer skill proficiency, such as "story-related consequences for one's own actions" or "the obligation to make one of two mutually exclusive decisions due to incompatible outcomes or irreconcilable differences between the parties involved." goopy goblin gamer brain in this sense becomes a problem when the indignity of not having things go personally your way causes players to interpret intentional artistic choices in the game's narrative or overall design as "problems" to be "fixed."

like believe me i am an occasional sufferer of goopy goblin gamer brain myself but that's why i have my once-a-month random night of topscoring in team fortress 2 as heavy weapons guy

I ADORE NakeyJakey but his Last of Us 2 vid just missed the mark in SO MANY WAYS for me here.

He'd bring up the supposed failures of the story / his care towards certain characters while simultaenously throwing out ANY thought towards their actual place and potential reasoning within the story outside of his first-impressions.

While I agreed with his general stance on gameplay it was infuriating to see someone go "eh who even cares about why (literal integral story character) was here, it was CLEARLY pointless" while ignoring the very fact that the fact any of them were there at all was 1. Very obvious and 2. Meant to make you reflect on how deep in the Trauma of it All Ellie is and how it affected them as well as how they treated/understood Ellie.

His implication that Dina was nothing more than a love-object was also patently false. We get SO MUCH insight on how she handles grief and the lengths she'd go to get her own revenge on the people who harmed her family - as well as literally HAVING THE STRENGTH TO LEAVE ELLIE when she bailed on their family aGAIN.

The facts and pieces to interpret were ALL RIGHT THERE but just because he CHOSE not to see any of them as anything other than filler he just kind of willingly removed like half the point of the story from himself and then complained about it for 40mins.

Part II was a complex and throroughly more interpretive story and anyone that simply looked at it face-value kind of ate-the-bait of poetic-irony / surface-level story motivations and what they appeared to be versus what they (quite obviously) actually were I feel. You just had to do more than play, you had to digest and actually think about it rather than wait for the game to explain it all with a pretty little bow.
