I know I've been rather quiet of late - I needed to take some time away due to some personal issues as well as a move. BUT! That doesn't mean that my needles or hooks have stayed cold! My most recent project is this capelet, and I've just finished the front panel and will be moving on to the back panel tomorrow. I've made this before, using all black yarn. However, I wasn't happy with it at all. I'm much happier with what I've got going on here, and am greatly looking forward to how it turns out! The pattern is "Winter Cape," by Merry Purdy (available on Ravelry), and the wool I'm using is Lion Brand Yarns' Wool Ease in Dark Rose Heather and Forest Green Heather, which is a nice 80% Acrylic, 20% wool blend.

A little spontaneous doily making after getting the urge to make lace. It's a nice little WIP!

Shortly after I first started opening commissions, I had coworkers who were interested in a project or two. I was absolutely overjoyed when one of my coworkers asked for a jumper for their cat. Here the little feline is modeling that very same jumper that I had worked up, and last I heard, she still greatly enjoys wearing it!

Coffee with a Spider: Fiber Interests
Something that I think I've started noticing throughout the fiber community is a love of branching out a little bit and trying out other fiber crafts. For myself personally, I already do crochet, nalbinding, and knitting... and have plans to delve into tatting and spinning and weaving in the future. I'm very interested to know what all of you enjoy doing and are interested in learning? Maybe we can all learn from each other! ^.^

Continuing the trend of projects I worked on with @patchypines, these are just three of quite a few oak leaf patches that I crocheted for them. As their favorite sweater was in need of repair, we put our heads together again and came up with a few ideas to help repair the holes and cover the damage. These were a fun and casual project that I was able to work up rather quickly while quarantined during an outbreak at the cafe that I was working at.

So far, nearly everything I've posted have been on a larger scale. But that said, I don't limit myself to larger projects. Micro-crochet is a fun little endeavor at times, and I was more than happy to crochet a little mothman for @patchypines and a little Fresno Nightcrawler for @crypticpuzzlebox! I definitely hope to do more of these in the future!

@patchypines asked me if I could make a skull with red eyes for him for a project he's doing. Sent me a pattern and I was happy to work this up for him! Looking forward to seeing what you use it for!

And fresh off the needles, this commission is finished! A pair of socks made from cotton, nettle fiber, silk, and linen. This was such a fun project to work on, and I do hope they serve their new owner well!

Coffee with a Spider: That Awkward Moment...
I've been working on a doily - something a lot of people seem to have been really enjoying seeing - and am getting to the last few rounds of the piece. I love lace so much, but sometimes life has a way of nipping at you in unexpected ways. The sheer amount of thread I just had to frog for two rounds was almost heartbreaking because after having an unexpected break from working on the doily (i.e, an emergency surgery) that lasted for over a week, I came back to it to find that I'd been getting my counts wrong, resulting in lace petals going off in odd directions. Shouldn't take me long to fix, but goodness, I needed to vent a little!

So I've recently started some new medications to treat my fibromyalgia as well as some mental health issues. This doesn't mean my hooks and needles grow cold! True winter is creeping ever closer here in New England, so an additional skirt seemed a good idea. So far it's coming along great, and I'm loving the colors on it!

Hot off the needles, and my first project working magic loop. It is very far from perfect, and the second mitt should hopefully be even better than this one!

Coffee with a Spider - My Fiber Journey, pt. 1
So, a select few know that this isn't my first rodeo with Tumblr. I used to host a surprisingly successful blog that I took down several years ago because of personal reasons. But now that I'm back on Tumblr, I realize I can do something that I wanted to do elsewhere but just didn't really have much impetus to do. I can share my fiber story. Gonna do that as part of my little coffee posts, since my coffee posts are meant to be random thoughts and the like. So, here goes!
Tumblr media
I can't say that yarn crafts were where I started. Growing up, I'd done a variety of crafts - loom beading, bead weaving, macrame, pyrography, calligraphy, fantasy cartography, and so on. It wasn't until 2020 that I fell off the deep end and really started getting into yarn crafts as a passion.
The world was closing down as the pandemic set in. I wasn't in the US at the time - instead, I was in Norway. While on a visit to Oslo, my friend @patchypines had asked me if I knew about naalbinding since I was in Scandinavia. Something the two of us have in common is a love of history, and when I mentioned that I hadn't, they encouraged me to look into it.
And look into it, I did. And then started digging into the history of naalbinding - looking at images of samples found in Scandinavia, Peru, Egypt, and more; learning about the different stitches that had been developed or otherwise reverse engineered from the historical samples; learning how to craft my own naal. It wasn't long before I had been able to get my hands on some wool and made my first naalbound bag (the very same in the picture above, which now belongs to PatchyPines).
Beethoven said "Don't only practice your art, but force your way into its secrets; art deserves that, for it and knowledge can raise man to the Divine." And that's something I took to heart. It wasn't long before I found myself wanting to learn to knit as well. And it wasn't like there wasn't a plethora of inspiration around me. Everywhere you look in Norway are beautiful examples of knit hats and sweaters and mittens and more. Needles were in my hands and I was practicing knitting in very short order, then the Norwegian purl. I was still naalbinding as well, but now the door had opened for exploration.
I'll share some more of my journey later on! But where I'll leave off is to say that if you find yourself interested in something, anything... don't let anyone dampen your excitement. It could lead into a world of possibilities or a new passion!
