I'll tag @sleepyowlwrites, @sarahlizziewrites, and @outpost51 plus anyone who wants to.

Rules: give us your characters' names and definitions and vote whether or not they fit the meaning.

I very rarely choose names for their meanings, and a lot of them I just make up, but here are a few from Nicea that I thought were interesting. All of the meanings are from Behind the Name.

Althea

Originally chosen just because I liked the sound of it.

From the Greek name Ἀλθαία (Althaia), perhaps related to Greek ἄλθος (althos) meaning "healing".

Me: well that's not very Pirate Queen

In Greek myth she was the mother of Meleager. Soon after her son was born she was told that he would die as soon as a piece of wood that was burning on her fire was fully consumed. She immediately extinguished the piece of wood and sealed it in a chest, but in a fit of rage many years later she took it out and set it alight, thereby killing her son.

Me: nevermind that's spot on

Martin

Originally chosen because I liked it/it felt like a good older brother name.

From the Roman name Martinus, which was derived from Martis, the genitive case of the name of the Roman god Mars. Mars Possibly related to Latin mas meaning "male" (genitive maris).

Kara

In Old Canon Cady also had an older sister who I think I never actually named? But instead of dealing with the complication of another sibling and their family, I converted that character concept into Martin's wife. I went with Kara because it felt right, and as an extra little easter egg for a family that was Northern Irish in Old Canon, it's similar to the Irish word for friend.

Variant of Cara. Cara From an Italian word meaning "beloved" or an Irish word meaning "friend".

Apparently I got that one exactly right.

Allison

I don't remember if I picked up the name Allison from Scottish name popularity records or if I just sort of said "haha why not" years ago when I created this character.

From the middle of the 20th century this has primarily been used as a variant of the feminine name Alison. However, prior to that it was used as an uncommon masculine name, derived from the English and Scottish surname Allison. Allison Means "son of Alan" or "son of Alexander" (as well as other given names beginning with Al).

I don't know if I ever looked up the meaning of Allison but uh. His dad's name is Alan so. Kinda literal.

@talesofsorrowandofruin and @dotr-rose-love both tagged me to share the meanings of the characters' names from my WIP. I don't name characters based on meaning, so it's always a trip to look these up afterwards and find out what I did by accident.

Right, time to make Google think I've given up the childfree life by searching for name meanings (not guaranteeing the cultural accuracy of any of these btw).

ARIA

Lioness, air, noble, honourable, or melody, depending on who you ask and what language you speak. What an absolutely dreadful name for a career criminal. Well done, brain.

VIANDE

Literally just French for meat. It's a chosen name that the character took as an act of empowerment after escaping a situation where she was brutally and repeatedly devalued as a person. I don't know what her given name was. She hasn't told me.

FREYJA

Noble lady, or an expression for lady-in-an-important-way. Did I get this from the Norse goddess who is beautiful but also extremely tough and not to be fucked with? Maybe?

MUSTAFA

Chosen, selected, appointed, preferred. I guess this sort of fits a crime boss who is also very Decent Human Being and does his crime in a fuck the system way.

RAFE

Counsel of the wolf. Ooooh, OK, that's cool. His full name is Rafael, meaning god has healed, which is somewhat less relevant. I don't think god had anything to do with this guy's life.

GILLEN

Anglicized version of Irish name Gillean, meaning servant of Saint John. I'm Irish, so there's that, but I'm not Christian. I am low-key obsessed with Christian mythology though and Saint John is fascinating in the extreme. Nothing to do with this character, but hey.

The greatest injustice ever faced is that I almost certainly started the still thriving "clown husbandry" tag on here, but any discussion about it (from a know your meme page to a youtube video with 500k views) says it's a joke of "unknown origin" or credited to this post, likely bouncing off of mine (which was actively circulating at the time with like 30k notes):

This is a tragedy for many reasons, most of all because it wasn't just an offhand joke but actually a direct response to some of the funniest online hate I ever got:

They're erasing the truest history of tumblr: its desperate need to seethe and argue over every obvious joke with more than 10 notes.

I think there's something to be said for fanfiction that loves canon in a way that’s rude. Like thank you for this wonderful thematic tragedy made out of this character’s entire arc ending in death, it was emotionally and intellectually moving, but also fuck you fuck you fuck you they live, this time and every time they live, they never died, their flaws are not their undoing, actually they have no flaws, actually they save everyone, actually who cares about a story, any story, where this one dies, actually i cared about that story so much i made a new one, actually i cared so much i unmade the old one, you gave me morals and i left them for the mortal, but they’re mine now and i will never let them die, actually thank you, actually fuck you, strongly worded letter to follow
