two female nanday conures were observed allopreening, cuddling, and performing mating behaviors in florida, where an escaped feral population has naturalized. same-sex pairings are common in birds. it’s possible that this pairing was due to a lack of male nanday conures in the area, but same-sex pairs still occur in areas with available opposite-sex mates in many circumstances.

August 22, 2022 - Nanday Parakeet, Black-hooded Parakeet, or Nanday Conure (Aratinga nenday)
These parrots are found in central South America in open woodlands and grasslands with some trees and have also been introduced to parts of the United States and Europe. They eat seeds, fruit, nuts, and berries, foraging in flocks. Nesting in tree cavities, females lay clutches of two to five eggs and incubate them alone.

We Accidentally A Bird (Help?)
In case anyone was wondering where we’ve disappeared off to the past few weeks: we went on a seemingly ordinary vacation to visit family and then returned 2 weeks later with an extremely traumatized foster bird in tow.
He’s an anxious little nanday conure named Dusky and we love him with all our heart! He’s rather camera shy, so the only picture we have of him features him hissing at the camera from the shadows -- we stopped trying after that because we didn’t want to cause undue stress:
Long story short: a family member didn’t want him, but the nearby parrot sanctuary had no space for more birds. We were alarmed by the conditions he was living in and worried for his safety, so we offered to take him back home with us and care for him until there’s an opening for him at the parrot rescue near us.
I wish we could just adopt him ourselves, but this just isn’t a good time for us to adopt a parrot. We’re not in a stable enough health or financial situation for that. Still, we’re doing our best to socialize him a bit and introduce him to some new foods and toys during his stay with us. He’s still got a long way to go, but he’s already improving in leaps and bounds now that he has toys, attention, and a humidifier and air purifier helping him breathe!
He came to us with nothing but a cage and food, so we’ve been doing our best to get him the toys, perches, treats, hygiene, and medical care he deserves! Which is very expensive and we are “buying basic groceries makes us want to cry” levels of poor. So if anyone would like to help us out, we have an Amazon wishlist for Dusky Stuff! Or, if you’d like to help us get some nice, safe perches and toys for him (he’s a chewer so he goes through them fast), we would make good use of gift cards to the Lil Monsters Bird Toys shop -- you’ll need our email for that, which you can get by dropping us a DM or an ask off anon. Thanks in advance to anyone who does help out!
We’ll probably continue to be scarce on Tumblr for the duration of Dusky’s stay with us, but we do still check for notifications regularly! We just don’t have much time to scroll through our dash.

I dunno if this has been talked about but what's your favourite dinosaur and why?
I've answered it before, but this blog is a decade old so why not do it again!
Maiasaura is my favorite dinosaur species! It was a foundational discovery in understanding complex behavior in dinosaurs during the dinosaur renaissance, and has since been an amazing model system (something nonavian dinosaurs don't have a lot of) for understanding dinosaur growth and life history. It's also an objective cutie patootie.
Second favorite overall is Ravens because they're ridiculously interesting and intelligent animals and I'm, personally, ready for them to take over the Earth from us. I welcome our Corvid Overlords. Also, they're super cutie patooties!!!! the way they play and talk and interact is adorbs!!!
Second favorite nonavian is Kulindadromeus (my prof pic!) because, like Maiasaura, it advanced our understanding of the complexity of dinosaurian evolution - specifically filamentous integument and the evolution of feathers. Kulindadromeus shows that it is likely protofeathers, inclusive of pycnofibres, are ancestral for Ornithodira. This plus the complexity of the feathers known from Tapejara showcase that feathers are a feature commonly found in Ornithodirans, not unique to the ones closest to birds. It also is a fricken cutie patootie and objectively the one we all want as a pet: roughly large-dog sized, herbivore, FLUFFY. it's like having a sheep crossed with a bird as a pet. who doesn't want this.
third favorite is a five-way tie between my individual pet birds, Ahsoka (cockatiel) Minerva (cockatiel) Ellie (my ESA, green cheek conure) Aurora (hybrid conure) and Willis (nanday conure)

Surprise re-release!
Long story short, I went to paint the Nanday and Jenday varieties on the previous template to find it had been corrupted. I wasn’t thrilled with the art anyway, so I took it as a golden opportunity to make the aratinga conure angels shine and finally release the custom features I had been promising.
Now available with halo-free and custom options in the shop!
