Hello, dear, sweet, lovely readers. 

We’re pretty happy today. Better than happy, even. We’re absolutely BLOWN AWAY by all the wonderful gifts that arrived in our inbox yesterday. Thank you so much to all of you for making it such an awesome day and for writing such amazing fics--we got a seriously cool variety of responses to this one, and we continue to be impressed by this fandom’s creativity and spirit.

31. “Can I kiss you?”

Jonas fiddles with the hem of his shirt, resolutely not looking up at Mikael. To face them now, after what he just said… He’s kind of hoping for the floor to just swallow him whole to save him any further embarrassment in front of his crush and the second best person he’s ever known (the best being Even, of course).

“Jonas, can you look at me?” Mikael asks, and Jonas tries, he really does. But he can’t. So he shakes his head and hangs it lower, his chin practically hitting his chest.

“I didn’t mean to say that.”

“Didn’t mean to say what?”

“You know, that…that I like you.”

Mikael rests a hand on Jonas’s leg, and Jonas looks away, off towards the window. A bird flys by and Jonas tries to tell what sort of bird it is, just by looking. “Of course you meant to say it. You asked to speak to me privately, brought me in here, said you had to tell me something, and then told me you liked me and that you’ve liked me for a couple of months now. What part of that was accidental?” They tease, and Jonas feels his cheeks light on fire.

“Okay, I meant to say it,” he concedes, looking back down at his lap, where Mikael’s hand is still resting. “But I wouldn’t have if I’d known you didn’t feel the same. I don’t…I don’t want to make things weird between us. This friendship means more to me than anything, and I’d rather have you in my life as my friend than not in my life at all. So, can you just promise me that nothing will change? Please?”

Mikael’s hand moves, this time to Jonas’s jaw, right where his neck meets it. “Jonas, look at me. Please.” When Jonas doesn’t move, Mikael moves their hand to Jonas’s chin, lifting it and forcing the eye contact. Mikael is smiling, Jonas realizes, and butterflies erupt in his stomach. “Can I kiss you?”

Jonas’s brain short circuits. “Can you… Huh? Can you what?”

Mikael laughs, “Can I kiss you?”

Dumbly, Jonas nods, already leaning in. Mikael leans in too, and their noses bump together from their lack of experience in kissing each other, neither of them sure which way to go. But they figure it out, and Mikael’s lips are so soft, and Jonas never wants to stop kissing them. He wants to stay in this exact position forever and a day.

Mikael pulls back first, running their thumb over Jonas’s bottom lip. “Can I kiss you again?” Jonas asks immediately, and the smile that crosses Mikael’s face is so beautiful that Jonas could cry. (He makes a mental note to call Isak after this is over because holy shit, this is a religious experience, and it’s all thanks to Isak that he even agreed to tell Mikael about his feelings in the first place.)

“Sure,” Mikael whispers. “As long as you don’t mind if I take you out for dinner tonight, too.”

“Okay,” Jonas nods, smiling so wide that his cheeks hurt. “Now kiss me again.”

Summary: The next couple of weeks go by in a rush, mostly because Isak spends more time studying at the cafe than at home. Midterms are coming up and he’s on the edge of a breakdown 24/7, to say the least. Even’s clearly noticed, seeing as he’s been giving Isak herbal tea or hot chocolate whenever he asks for a double espresso and not even Isak’s whiny “but I’m a customer you’re supposed to give me what I want” changes his mind.

At some point Eva and Jonas stage an intervention in the middle of the cafe when Isak is about to throw a fit after they refuse to quiz him while they’re having lunch.

He’s leaning against the wall in the corridor leading out, a pose which looks like it has been lifted frame for frame out of a high school movie. He’s looking all suave with one of his legs cocked against the wall, and he’s staring down at his phone, completely out of it.

“Boo,” Isak calls, and that’s the moment where all of Even’s supposed suaveness disappears, as the foot that is resting against the wall flinches, causing Even to lose his balance and topple down the wall. His hand immediately flies out to try and steady himself, which makes Isak laugh.

1)      Dust My Shoulders Off – Jane Zhang I found this on youtube a while back and was sucked in by its cool art nerd music video (i’m only an amateur art nerd but I love a gallery) but the song grew on me, it’s actually a banger (timbaland produced it though so it was never gonna be garbage)

2)      Fox On The Run – Sweet - I recently re-watched GOTG vol. 2 and it is such a GOOD trailer song for that movie. It’s just got such a bombastic opening and now I listen to it whenever I need to get pumped up for cooking or putting washing out.

3)      Seashore – The Regrettes - This was another youtube find, and the music video is great, but also the song is a great indie music feminist fuck you, and I love it.

4)      Final Song – MO - I did not have any thoughts on the girl from Lean On and then I saw her interviewed on british music tv and I heard this song a lot and it grew on me and then I associated it with something I was writing and now I’m still listening to it a year later.

5)      Sun/Changing Of The Seasons – Two Door Cinema Club – I’m gonna do an obnoxious subtle brag here so sorry but I saw them live overseas kind of by chance and it reignited my love of them. I couldn’t pick a song but these are the two I love a lot.

6)      Kids – OneRepublic – I saw this in a best of video, liked it, forgot about it, remembered it and associated it with a certain ship and now I’m very fond of it. I do this a lot and my phone is full of songs I used to be obsessed with and am too lazy to delete

7)      Hoops – The Rubens – This is the only Australian band on this list I should be ashamed of myself. It’s just a solid, moody rock jam that I rediscovered a few months ago and is a great writing song for creating a specific mood.

8)      Where Are You Now? – Lady Leshurr ft. Wiley – Traveling alone is fun except for when you’re in a tiny hotel room in the country by yourself, that can get a bit echo-y, so I often had the tv on the one channel I knew, the music channel, and it played this song and got me psyched up for the day – so I downloaded it and listened to it a lot where I went, and now , I’m very nostalgically fond of it. Also it’s a solid banger, with another bombastic opening.

9)      I Feel It Coming – The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk – When Starboy came out I thought they would never do a better collab. I was wrong. This might be the best version of The Weekend, romantic without being sappy, sexy without being misogynistic, backed by the assured production skills of two French DJ robot men. It’s like peak MJ. It’s been a year and I’m still obsessed with this song.

10)   Take On Me - Aha – I live my life in a constant state of never getting sick of this song, but this year for some reason I’ve been listening to it a lot, and accidentally getting it stuck in my head and annoying my poor friends who are in class with me. I’m sorry everyone, it’s just too strong of a banger.

This was originally a different post but tumblr mobile ate it and I’m petty so I left it a few hours and did it again. It was very fun to do though! Harder than I thought, I listen to a lot of stuff on repeat, and I’m sorry I said banger so much I can’t help it.
