Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “From the Desert Comes a Stranger” - Review
Tumblr media
The Book of Boba Fett tosses aside its title character for the second week in a row for a well directed episode that is filled with ambitious and questionable story telling turns.
Din Djarin has committed to joining Boba Fett in his standoff against the rising threat of the Pyke Syndicate. But, before joining in on the Tatooine gang war, he must visit his young friend Grogu, who is in the midst of his Jedi training. Meanwhile, the Pyke’s have recruited some muscle of their own.
If there was any doubt that The Book of Boba Fett has lost interest in its titular character, “From the Desert Comes a Stranger” should put the debate to rest. Sure, Boba actually appears in this episode, but he quite literally has nothing to say. At least some of the various plot threads from the first four episodes carry through here, but even the ongoing threat of the Pyke’s ends up getting lost in a sea of stories carried over from other media. It’s a truly head-scratching development for this series that slouched along for four weeks only to be subsumed by a primer for the third season of The Mandalorian and other upcoming shows.
On a larger storytelling level, I really wonder how this is all going to play out. It was always clear that The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic (if it even still exists) were all going to play in an overlapping sandbox that would culminate in some major crossover event that is almost certainly going to be a remake of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy, but just how much these shows were going to connect wasn’t entirely clear. If “Return of the Mandalorian” and “From the Desert Comes a Stranger” are any indication, it’s all going to be one continuous show with narrative threads that aren’t contained to any particular series. For all the faults of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (of which there are many), at least that franchise is able to maintain some form of individual identity for its properties even as they interact with other narratives or tee up new plots or characters. This is even the case for their often middling Disney+ shows (WandaVision being the shining exception). Yelena Belova may appear in Hawkeye but she functions as a complication to Kate Bishop’s mentorship under Clint and a way to challenge his guilt and grief over losing Nat. We may get our first glimpse at Kang the Conqueror in Loki, but his appearance does at least gesture to the themes of fate and self determination that the series was playing with. The Book of Boba Fett isn’t nearly that elegant. The appearance of the many (and I do mean many) other Star Wars characters in this episode don’t click in a way that serves Boba Fett’s character arc or, in several cases, even the criminal intrigue unfolding on Tatooine.
It’s hard then to really process the sequences of Luke and Grogu that take up such a sizable chunk of “From the Desert Comes a Stranger.” While Luke has the chance to be more than a fanboy wet dream here, it still can’t help but feel off. Sure, I like getting to see Luke getting to be the Jedi teacher he wants to be so badly at this point in his life and him passing on lessons to Grogu has a sweet symmetry to his own tutelage under Yoda, but is this really the time to get his story? I understand Din wanting to check in on Grogu and his training, and  learning to let his surrogate son step into the next stage of his life on his own is an important part of Din’s character arc, but the sheer extent that we spend with Luke and his first apprentice feels misplaced.
There’s also just something off about these scenes and I don’t mean in the “why does Luke Skywalker look like a character from a video game” uncanny valley that undercut his appearance in “The Rescue.” Luke certainly looks better here. There’s just a certain stiffness to Mark Hamill’s performance that falls flat. There seems to be this willingness to write Luke post-Return of the Jedi as this serene, enlightened being that’s above human emotion, when that has never really been the case for the character. Luke has always been a man that lives by his passion and brashness. This is apparent throughout the Original Trilogy and one of the reasons I adore his controversial direction in The Last Jedi. He makes an attempt to appear above his emotions when facing Vader, but it doesn’t work. He still gives into his anger but also his compassion. Serenity is not a trait I would ever attach to Luke Skywalker. Sure, he may try his damndest to get there, but it’s not a state of being that sits naturally for him. To see him speaking in his relative monotone to Grogu here feels off. It also feels similarly weird for Ahsoka as well? Oh yeah, she also makes her appearance in this episode if you had any doubt that this was a Dave Filoni production. Ahsoka is a character that tossed aside the ways of the Jedi in part because of their impersonal detachment. To have her and Luke lecturing our two leads from The Mandalorian on letting go may make sense for Din and Grogu’s respective character arcs, but are these really the characters to do that?
On a related note, as much as it may hit an emotional soft spot to see Ahsoka compare Luke to his father, I was a bit let down by their meeting in this episode. Ever since we knew that Ahsoka survived into and past the Age of the Empire, fans have waited for the moment that she and Luke would meet. And while there is a quiet, understated quality to their interaction here, I can’t help but wonder at the missed opportunity of having their first on screen scene together be their first meeting in continuity. The emotional wallop of Ahsoka discovering Anakin’s son and Luke discovering this living connection to his father as his purest self has so much potential for all-time great Star Wars material. Slipping in this moment here isn’t bad, but it’s a teaser for some of other, better story that happened at some point prior to this show’s start.
Also, this show is about Boba Fett and Tatooine crime lords? I just wrote several hundred words about Luke, Grogu, and Ahsoka and I’ve barely talked about the actual narrative for this series. The Pykes remain a mostly empty antagonist. Sure, they have an in universe connection to the various forces opposing Boba Fett’s claim on Mos Espa, but they are a (almost always literally) faceless villain that doesn’t have much of a personal edge.
It’s why the appearance of another Star Wars legacy character is so welcome here. Yes, Cad Bane swaggers his way out of the Dune Sea to rain judgement down about Boba and his allies. Not only is it an actual thrill to see live action Bane be rendered in such a downright creepy fashion, but it’s also a relief to have a character arrive to challenge Boba that carries with him an actual sense of personality and menace. And it genuinely hurts to see him gun down Timothy Olyphant’s swoon worthy Cobb Vanth. Cobb is another character whose inclusion in The Book of Boba Fett makes sense and honestly feels overdue. (There’s a world where there’s a whole very solid episode of this series where Boba and Cobb have to build an uneasy alliance between crimelord and law man and also deal with the fact that they both wore the same armor for years. But that belongs in a better show.) Olyphant is such a charmer in the role of this old west style marshal that having him saunter onto screen at the episode’s start was already a highlight. To have him face down a character like Bane, especially after such a haunting entrance, is the most tension I’ve felt in this series to date.
Bane’s whole arrival sequence is so expertly tense that it’s fairly easy to forget that this episode is directed by the same man that gave us the absolute turd that was The Mandalorian’s season one low point, “The Gunslinger.” Despite my issues with the scripting, “From the Desert Comes a Stranger” is easily the best live action direction we have seen from Dave Filoni. Actors feel more comfortable. Shots feel more dynamic. There are strange moments of Star Wars like wonder like seeing a swarm of ant like droids building a hut of stone. I’m still not sure that Filoni is as suited for live action as he is for animation where his big ideas and sentimentality feel much more natural, but he’s at least learning to operate on the level of the other accomplished directors in the rotating live action Star Wars machine.
Next week’s finale is going to have a lot of ground to cover. There are still a lot of moving plot threads that are going to be resolved some how, and presumably Boba Fett has....some sort of character arc that’s going to need to be rounded out? I’m not completely pessimistic on the idea that this series will be able to pull off its big finale, but there is serious work to be done and very little time left to be sidetracked. But for all I know Han Solo will show up and send our title character careening back into the Sarlacc pit where Jon Favreau and crew seem to think he should have never left.
Score: B-

My unpopular opinion about this character:
I’m...kinda glad /now/ that she’s not in the Disney reboots I think it wouldn’t have been good.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
THAT SHE HADN’T DIED AND BROKE 11 YEAR OLD ME’S HEART.
my het ship:
luke/mara
my fem/slash ship:
Uh, i guess i could ship leia/mara?
my OTP:
Luke/Mara
my OT3:
I don’t really have one but I’ve read some Luke/Mara/Lando fic and that one Luke/Mara/Thrawn fic recently was FIRE.
a head cannon fact:
This is kinda canon, but not exactly, but I love the idea of Luke and Mara quietly pining for each other and thinking that it’ll never happen and then BOOM! Force Bond! Rushed Engagment! lol

We are the same; Bucky x teen reader
Alright guys like I promised here is request #2 that I received from an anon who wanted a Bucky barnes x teen reader. Now be warned there is hints of parental neglect, some swearing and it’s not a bad warning but the rest of the story goes into Bucky’s POV so I hope that’s alright with everyone and if not *shows you the door and gives u the boot* Also there’s STAR WARS refrences so I do NOT own SW or the Avengers, they belong to Disney/Marvel/Lucas Films. Anyways that’s all the warnings for now. Hope u all enjoy my lovelies ;)

I didn’t know how it happened but it happened all so fast.  I was sold to Hydra for drinking money by my own abusive parents and for years I was subjected to testing like an animal.  No in fact I am an animal.  Hydra wanted to combine human and animal DNA to create a monster that could take down an entire army and kill a thousand men.
My name is (y/n) and they call me Beast-girl, the ability to change into any animal alive or extinct.  And my life was a living hell that I barely felt any life in my anymore.
Until they came.
Explosions came from outside the base, the alarms were blaring so loudly they made my sensitive ears bleed, and next thing I knew, I was taken by some of the scientists to be “terminated”.  I was strapped to a table and given a paralyzing serum so that I couldn’t fight back then just before they gave me “the death” serum, the doors were busted open and a shield came flying in as well as guns firing.
As my vision was going in and out, I saw a man with dark brown hair and the deepest blue eyes standing over me trying to talk to me but thanks to the serum I could barely hear his voice.  Then my vision went black due to hunger and dehydration.
Next thing I knew, I woke up in a bed with needles in my arm.  Thinking I was being drugged again, I tried to take them out but I was stopped by a metal hand and he assured me that these were good drugs to counteract the ones I’ve been given for years.
I knew who he was once I got a clearer picture of him.  It was the Winter Soldier, the prized soldier that Hydra always spoke of.  They hoped one day they could’ve had us work together that was until the fall at Washington DC and they lost their prized weapon.
He assured me that I was going to be alright and that I was safe now.  That I was never going to go back to that horrible place again.
*Bucky’s POV*
It’s been over a month since we had saved (y/n) and I have been paying very careful attention to her.  I was in the same spot as she was when Steve found me three years ago but poor (y/n) was acting even worse than I was.  She always looked so frail, so fragile like a broken kitten.
As I read more on her file, it broke my heart even more to see that she had never been given a single bit of love in her entire life, not just from Hydra but her parents as well.
I mean who the hell would ever sell their child to an organization like Hydra for drinking money no less!?  I hoped that those bastards drank themselves to death, if not then I’ll hunt them down myself and put them out myself.
Currently the rest of the team and I were just casually hanging around the living room watching some movie that I was barely paying attention to because I had seen (y/n) come down in the form of a cat trying to find something to eat.  I watched as she turned back to her normal human form and saw her sneak into the cabinet and pull out a bag of chips that I’ve noticed she always goes to, assuming those are her favorite out of all the chip bags we have (and I kid you not, we have a shit ton of chips).
She then turned back into a cat and took off the opposite way back towards her room.  I looked at her with empathy when I heard Sam’s voice say.
“Yo Vanilla Ice whatcha starin at?”
“(Y/n) came down just now”.
“And we missed it? Damn that girl is more of a ninja than you were” exclaimed Tony.  I glared at him and Steve getting the message slapped Tony in the back of the head as well as Natasha for being offensive.
“This isn’t a joke Tony!” snapped Natasha. “What (y/n) has been through both before and during Hydra is no laughing matter, be thankful that your parents at least cared about you”.  That got Tony to shut up then Steve turned to me and said.
“What are you thinking?” I sighed deeply and said.
“I don’t know”.
Later that night I was laying on my bed in my Brooklynn apartment, rattling my brain thinking on how I could start to break the ice with (y/n).  I wanted to break the ice with her slowly because I know that suddenly coming onto her would traumatize her further and she doesn’t need that suffering anymore.
Suddenly an idea came to me.
The next day after going on my daily morning run with Steve and Chocolachino I was the only one left in the kitchen because I wanted to wait for (y/n) to come down which she always did whenever we came back and then would enter the kitchen as soon as we had our quick breakfast.
I then saw her hiding behind the wall of the kitchen but as soon as I turned around, she hide back further against the wall. I then took the soda can I had sitting out and as soon as I opened it, the fizz came spurting out like a volcano all over me as well as the counters and the floor.  If this wouldn’t work then I’m gonna kill myself for it but I soon heard the sound of soft laughter coming from behind the wall.
It was (y/n). And she was laughing as well as smiling.  Aww she had a cute laugh too, kinda reminds me of my sister Becky’s laugh in a way.
“Well now that we’ve managed to break the ice a bit why don’t you come over here and help me clean this up before Stark kills me”. She was hesitant at first but I assured her, “I won’t hurt you (y/n), I promised you that no one was ever gonna hurt you while you were here and I’m sticking to that, so come on come here”. Finally she stepped out from the shadows and cautiously walked towards me and I handed her a bunch of paper towels to help me clean up the kitchen.
Every day after that, I made it my soul mission to make (y/n) smile at least once a day.  If not by making a fool of myself, then by pranking Sam or Scott which really got her laughing.
After trying to learn how to do some lightsaber moves with a bow staff and hitting myself a few times, I really got her giggling and I even got her to finally talk to me.
“Why do you do that?” Her voice was so quiet and shy anyone else who would’ve heard her, would’ve just brushed it off as the AC running but I didn’t.  So I answered her.
“Do what?”
“Make those noises, that’s not what a bow staff is for”.
“I know, I was just pretending it was a Lightsaber”.
“A what?”
“A Lightsaber, Steve and I just saw the recent Star Wars movie for the fifth time and everytime I see those things light up…..ohh I get chills”.  I looked at her and told her, “You haven’t seen any of the movies yet have you?” She looked down shamefully and I assured her, “It’s okay, hey how about we skip training for today and you and I have ourselves a Star Wars day hmm?”
“But…..but Natasha she’ll….”
“I’ll take care of Nat okay, I’m also one of your teachers and I say you need a day off, plus I could use another Star Wars movie buddy besides Steve, sometimes he still gets lost with it”.  I then led her out of the gym and the two of us got comfortable in my room and we began to watch Star Wars from the very beginning starting with the originals.
Turns out (y/n) freakin LOVED it as much as I did. And she was a fast learner with all the facts about each character and just like Steve and I were, she was shocked at the fact that Vader was Luke’s father.
By the end of the week, I took her to see “The Last Jedi” and by the end of it, we came in talking all about it in the secret code of Droid talk. I would do my best impersonation of R2 and she did an amazing BB8 imitation.
As the weeks went by, (y/n) was beginning to come out of her shell more and more around me but she was still a little hesitant around the rest of the team which I still understood.  At night, she would be screaming Bloody Mary due to Nightmares, but I was always the first one there to comfort her and bring her back to reality and not leave her side until morning.
I would then prepare her a good breakfast especially after a terrible nightmare because I knew having some comfort food after reliving the torture in your dreams can put so much weight on you and make you feel utterly miserable.
One day as she and I were watching “A New Hope” together and quoting some of the lines, Steve came in and said I was needed for an emergency meeting regarding (y/n).  She looked at me and I told her to just keep watching the movie and that I would be back in five minutes.  I then followed Steve downstairs to the meeting room and saw the entire Avengers all sitting around looking at me.
“What’s going on here?” I asked.
“Well we’ve been noticing lately of how you and Lone Wolf have been getting along recently” stated Tony.
“You’re the only one who she seems to really like out of all of us, plus you’ve helped her in more ways than we ever could” said Natasha.
“We have come to a decision as a group that the best place for (y/n) isn’t with the Avengers, but with you Mr. Barnes” finished Vision.  I looked at all of them and said.
“With me?”
“Yeah I mean you’ve gotten that girl to talk hell you got her to laugh the moment you got her alone with you with that soda can gag while the rest of us couldn’t get as much as a glance of her”. Stated Sam. Steve then came up to me and said.
“You and her both know what it’s like Buck. To be taken and twisted until you were what Hydra wanted you to be. Ever since she got here, I haven’t seen you this happy or determined to make a girl smile since your sister Rebecca”.
“Yeah….she reminds me of Becky every now and then” I stated with a soft smile.
“Both her and you are most happy around each other. You and her deserve each other, you draw strength from each other, you look out for her and I know that when she finds enough strength, she’ll do the same for you”.
“Thanks man, thank you all”.
“Take care of her Buck, and yourself as well”. I nodded to Steve then I took off back up the stairs to my room to see (y/n) still sitting there quoting the Princess Leia Obi-Wan message.  I stayed hidden for a bit until she finished and knocked alerting her of my presence.
“Hey (n/n) can I talk to yah real quick?”
“Sure what is it?” I then sat down beside her and told her.
“Well what the guys wanted to talk to me about is that we’ve decided where you’ll be staying at. So how would you feel like coming to live with me in Brooklyn?” She looked at me shocked and said.
“Live with you?”
“Yes but the final decision is all up to you. You can stay here in the Tower with the rest of the team, or you can come live with me”.  She looked at me and immediately hugged me tightly.  I was shocked at first but I relaxed and held her in my arms.
“I want to live with you Bucky”.
“Then live with me you shall, we’ll move your stuff to my place first thing in the morning”.  She cuddled into my chest and as the two of us continued watching Star Wars I heard her whisper as she was starting to fall asleep.
“I always wanted a brother”.  I smiled down at her and kissed her forehead and said to her.
“I promise to be the best brother you’ve ever had”.  I then held my sister in my arms until I too succumbed to the force that was sleep.

Not the Guy You Would Have Figured (Acts 10:1-8) | TMBH Acts #43
COMMENTARY:
As I say, my Christian vocation has emerged to include promoting the Holy Spirit as a capitalist tool. In process theology and economics as a moral science, capitalist tools are an important structures of capitalism. The economics of Jesus is based on capitalist tools.
For example, the community as a capitalist tools. A community we know a great deal about, generally, is the kibbutz associated with the synagogue at Caperdeum. That's absolutely existentially fixed in history including most of the building materials on site and the general anthropology of the synagogue kibbutz. Very successful community organization, historically. Rushville IN is a similar farm community with a number of similar community organizations. In terms of the pure sociology, the group dynamics of Capernaum and Rushville, if you left it to the Amish in the county, would look very similar because of the pure socialism, the group dynamics. Flush toilets and regional fresh water aquaduct system are the most beneficial modern innovations but a civil war that the assholes in the Joe McCarthy Conservative element of the GOP Shadow Agenda say will happen if treason is not rewarded by acquital can end those advantages. Like after Katrina. Only no Air Force One on the way.
Anyway, as I say, my perspective on Jesus is from that of Cornelius. Back in the day, Jesus could have been a potential VC terrorist or NVA sapper for me. I'm a Green Beret, living outside the known universe, and doing leading edge Pieace Corps shit as the living example of the Jedi Knight in that time and place. That was Plan A for me. This is part of Plan B, which didn't exist at the time I might have been a Green Beret and, in that situation, you are trained to keep your eye out for people like Jesus in the crowd, beginning about 14. For one thing, you might want to recruit him to play short-stop on your regimental soft-ball team after He finished basic. Or he might end up being like the young prisoner this SEAL killed as an object lesson to other young assholes that might try to fuck with me. There is a pretty broad continuum there.
At 3:47 finally finishes his Campus Crusdade for Christ invitation to learn the Gospels and brings you to speed on the time line. In terms of chronology, The Gospel of Mark has a time like like a police blotter: Just the facts, laid out according Local Stanard Time. Mark 1:1 - 9 relays everything the Roman military intlligence service knew about Jesus when He appeared to be anointed in some way by John the Baptist. Everything that occurs from Mark 1:10 to Mark 15:1 is derived directly from the Q source and the actual time span is really murky. 3 years is the given metric, but I think that was John Mark's chronology that began in Canaan probably just before Jesus feeds the 5000 which is just before the Passover just before the Passover in Mark 15. The one existential event universally acknowledged is the cross. A debate rages between people like Gary Habermas who hold that the first Easter occurred in 30 and another school of thought that 33 is the year. I happen to align with that timing: among other things, 33 reinforces Habermas's resurrection argument from minimal evidence because the expansion and proliferation of what has become the Apostle's Creed is even more dramatic. Everything that happens in Acts 1 - 9 happens by Acts X: the issue is, did it  all happen between 30 and 39/40 or did it all happen from 33 to 39/40.  Acts 10:34 - 43 is the basis of the Apostle's Creed, which Haberman correctly intuits began to spread throughout the world as a result of Pentacost. Just in terms of the main stream media in operation in Acts all the way through, plus the other epistles being circulated in the gentile realm, this is the animation of the  Apostle's Creed going virile.
What you can't see is that the eyewitness reports of the Resurrection went through the Roman legions like grass through a goose.
And that's the situation in the larger universe of the Roman Empire, media wise. The Roman spy system knew an awfully lot about Jesus before He was remanded for sedition to the Romans in Mark 15 and had collected it, routinely, in their bureaucracy which Cornelius probably ran for Pilate as his Administrative Chief of Staff. Both Pilate and Cornelius are part of the Praetorian Guard because that's the way Rome ran the Empire until Constantine dismantled the Praetorian Guard and replaced with a theocracy that survives in the Vatican, the Poliburo of the Roman Church.  Functionally, 2nd Temple Judaism, the Vatican and the Kremlim as the nexus of Soviet Marxism are all standard versions of King David's Kingdom, but with various bells and whistles added that didn't improve the outcome: they are all decadent structures: they rot from the inside.
Pilate and Cornelius represent a superior organic structure. And Cornelius and Herod know a lot about Jesus  and. apparently, so does Pilate's wife. Pilate is compelled to do his duty as an officer of the Emperor in an "orders are orders" kind of way. He is trapped from the very beginning and represents a study in the nature of duty exactly analogous to the binding of Isaac.
So, in Acts, the chronology beings to flow from the Cross, one way or another and by 40, Tertullian tells us the term "Christian" has been introduced to Rome by Tiberius from intelligence he received from Pilate and Cornelius and it will begin to work its way to Antioch by around 42, which is pretty date certain. Tiberius dies in 37, which means sometime between the cross and 37,  the civilian world was beginning to attach a meaning to the legend of the Resurrection in the Roman legions, which was, publically becoming a Christian was a bad career move, but the rudiments of the Eucharist were carried into Britain by Claudius and found fertile soil in the Druid women.
And, by 40, Pilate had been recalled just in time for Tiberius to die and the Romans continue to track the Christians from the outside, but, then, Peter walks in the door with everything that happened from the time he was recruited until he went to ground after Gethsemane from the inside and Cornelius plugs  Peter's testimony into the existing time line, including validating specific events from various sources, including Herod's file on Jesus, all the testimony from the X Legion in the Pratorium with Jesus and Cornelius's own experience of Jesus. The author of Mark uses "εὐθὺς" (immediately) 41 times between Mark 1:10 - 15:1 and it is an apparatus similar to an * to mark a second source.
And that's where Cornelius fits into Matt's commentary up to 3:47.
Cornelius is having a seista and has a frightful dream. I've had a couple of these and being in the presence of the Lord is a frightful experience. Mohammad's experience with Gabril receiving his prophecies was always unpleasant. Khadijah was there to comfort him and give him courage to become The Prophet, but it's not like being chosen for the All-Star Team. As I say, I've had a working relationship with the Holy Spirit since 1954 and he's fun to be with but can pass on a memo from The One that makes you wake up in a cold sweat. Emotion and dreams are the way The One communicates: the Holy Spirit manages these experiences for effect.
Cornelius has a relationship with The One in some aspect. Cornelius is the centurion in Matthew 8/Luke 7 who Jesus justifies by faith "Not in all of Israel have I found such faith": it is important to understand this as the moral equivalent to Genesis 15:6.  It is the nature of the profession of arms in a True Military milieu, such as the Roman legions.
Cornelius is not a hobbit. He is part of a horizontal strata of the Roman army that makes the difference between the Roman legions and everything that came before it: the centurion is the iron teeth in Daniel's lion with the iron jaws.  This is the point where the cuddly Campus Crusade for Christ narrative acquires it's Disney world "Happiest Place in the World" League of Justice skate board mythology that people like Richard Dawson and Richard Carrier justifiably scorn. Cornelius is heroic as a job description.
If it helps, centurions and NCOs have the same function as Dave Martinez of the Nats. The centurion is the leading edge of the industrial revolution. Pilate is the leading edge of the State Department/Pentagon executive  in a constitutional republic by way of Federalist 10.

Star Wars Celebration 2017.
As I write this, it’s 4 AM on a Tuesday morning.  I should be asleep.  It was nearly a week ago today my great friend, Nat, and I began our drive from Springfield, Missouri to Orlando, Florida. Our final destination of course; Star Wars Celebration.  After 16 hours on the road we arrived in Orlando.  Nat and I picked up the rest of our group, Kyle, Salomon, and Gio from the airport and we made our way to the Orange County Convention Center.
How do I begin to describe such an incredibly special event?  The magnitude of this convention was something I could have never imagined.  The amount of people attending was eye opening.  Sure, we all know how popular Star Wars is, but it’s the fans dedication to it which makes it amazing.
The first big event was the 40th anniversary panel on Thursday morning.  If we wanted to have any chance to watch it live, we had to camp in the convention center the night before. Once we got through security, we were put in massive queue line that was partitioned off in a big left to right pattern.  People camped out with camping chairs and sleeping bags.  In all honesty, it looked more like a refugee camp than a Star Wars Convention.  As 1 AM approached, the party started.  Disney brought out a DJ who played dance music and got the crowd hyped up.  People danced and had a great time.  There was even a “King of the Hill” style light saber fight among those who wished to participate.  Which, by the way, the writer of this article was the winner. Bring it on, Ray Park!  I’m ready to kick some Darth Maul ass!  Did I mention Deadpool was there?
Sadly, the first day, wasn’t without issues.  Before I get too deep into this subject, I’m not going to turn this into a finger pointing rant.  I would not know where to begin when it comes trying to organize a massive convention like this.  As I said, we waited overnight to get into the 40th anniversary panel;, so we would be guaranteed a spot to the stage.  This did not happen for our group.  Although we did get into auditorium where the panel was live streamed.  It was better than nothing.  So, what happened?  I hate to say, but some fans waiting after us figured out a way to circumvent the line. Wrist-bands were handed out and some folks figured out a way to get ahead of those who waited overnight. How this happened, I have no idea. But, there it is.  All I can say is I hope lessons were learned and the organizers can improve things for the next Celebration.
The 40th anniversary panel had so many great surprises.  To see George Lucas, the man who seemed to have sworn off his own creation, happily attending felt so good. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and nearly the entire old cast was perfect.  Of course, the one person we miss so dearly, Carrie Fisher was spoken about extensively.  Her daughter, Billie Lourd, gave an impactful and personal speech that didn’t leave a dry eye in the room.  The last part of the panel was something no one expected.   A huge curtain right of the stage moved away to reveal an full orchestra and a conductor.  The man slowly turned to wave at the audience… It was the iconic John Williams. Never in my life did I think I would see the man play live!  Once the crowd realized it was him, a standing ovation and cheers from the crowd erupted.  What was a crazy sight to see and watch how much control he had over us all the fans.  In the midst of us the cheering, he turned toward us the crowd again, smiling he put his finger to the front of his mouth asking for silence.  I’ve never heard a room so loud, get so quiet in such a short amount of time.  The orchestra played all of our favorite Star Wars music to close out the panel. It was perfection.
We moved on to exhibit floor. The booths, the Cosplay, the droids rolling around as if we were really in the Star Wars universe;  it was nothing short of breathtaking.  There is was so much to do and see, you really do need the 4 days to take it all in.  The area that attracted me most was the art section.  I’m already an art nerd, so I was very happy.  To meet the artists was a real treat for me. If I were a rich man, I would have bought every art piece there.  No joke.  My house would have looked like a Star Wars museum.  The cosplayers not only looked amazing, but were so gracious with people wanting to take pictures and ask questions.  I’ve been seriously considering making some for myself.  Meeting the Mandalorian Mercs has really inspired me to make some Mondo armor.
The next big panel was The Last Jedi Panel. This was another overnight camp out.  So, yes, we lived in the convention center for 2 days.  I will tell you now; it was 100% worth it.  In the middle of the night, Rian Johnson, the director of The Last Jedi, came out and visited all of us staying overnight.  He made the rounds in the line and began to sign autographs.  Here is why this guy is amazing.  A line formed for his autograph and he stayed until every person who wanted one it got it one. Nearly 4 hours later, he made his way out.  That night alone showed the fans that Rian Johnson isn’t just a director, he’s one of us.
In the morning, we made our way into The Last Jedi panel!  I’ll get right to it, this room was alive. Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, and new to Star Wars Kelly Marie Tran, were all in attendance.  Josh Gad made for a smart and hilarious host.  You can watch it on YouTube, so I won’t get too deep into the interviews.  I want to move right to the poster reveal.  What an absolutely beautiful, dark, and meaningful poster.  It’s simple yet says so much. The saber going from blue into red is ominous.  Then, the trailer was shown.  WOW.  “It’s time for the Jedi to end”. What an absolute gut punch to hear from Luke. Go watch it. You will be amazed.  When the lights came up, Rian Johnson came out on stage.  People were cheering, screaming, clapping.  He asked us, “Do you want to see it again?”  Obviously!  So we all watched it again with the utmost attention.  Looking for details we missed the first time.  The trailer did a perfect job of not giving away too many plot details but getting everyone excited for what’s to come.
Other special experiences were meeting Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka.  She baked cupcakes and yes, they are as amazing as people say.  I also got to shake hands with Sam Witwer.  We watched the Collider Jedi Council Show live show.  Met and spoke to Perri Nimeroff and Mark Ellis from Collider. Speaking of Jedi council, we made it on the show! You can see us stand up and the Collider crew clapping for us when Sal told them about the Jedi Council Facebook Fan Page hitting over 14k members. Lastly, Sal and Nat getting a signed Timothy Zahn signed Thrawn Poster and Barns and Noble exclusive Thrawn book for me.
Finally, I want to talk about what was the best part for me on this trip.  It wasn’t the famous people I got to see or some piece of Star Wars merchandise, it was the amazing time I had with my friends.  Nat and I have already been friends for years, but now there was Saloman, Gio, Kyle, and Lance with us.  We’re all very different people, with different life experiences.  Yet we bonded and formed a friendship that is hard to come by.  There was one night where we laughed for over 2 hours as some of the stupidest jokes.  The only part missing, was the rest of the Admin Holocron crew.  But damn, what a fantastic time. We were also part of one of the most special parts in Star Wars history, the 40th Anniversary.
I cannot wait to do it again with all of them.
Until next time, thank you! And may the force be with you, always.
