happy national sugar cookie day! posting these now since i didn't get around to doing so during their respective seasons (image descriptions under the cut).
one of the few good things to come out of the lockdown was me learning how to bake cookies. these were my first attempts with a basic sugar cookie recipe, gel food coloring, assorted sprinkles (including some in shapes such as eyeballs, candy canes, stars, beads, snowflakes, and so on), and three different sets of seasonal cookie cutters. the hardest part was mixing the food dye to get the colors just the way i wanted.
[ID: a series of digital photos of hand decorated homemade iced sugar cookies in assorted shapes and colors laid out on a table. the two sets of spring cookies (for easter and may day, respectively) are cut into shapes representing rabbits, butterflies, flowers, easter eggs, carrots, chicks and bluebirds in appropriate pastel colors. the two halloween ones include black bats and witch hats (as well as a couple of orange bats because why the hell not), white ghosts and moon, and orange jack-o-lanterns. the last two pics feature yuletide shapes mostly colored red, white, and/or green, such as candy canes, santas, snowmen, angels, and christmas trees, as well as reindeer which are colored brown, and a couple of stars and snowflakes which are white and silvery blue. /end ID]

National Peanut Butter Lovers Day
For those who simply adore this delicious food, it’s tons of fun to enjoy and celebrate everything to do with peanut butter.
Peanut butter is a well-loved high performance food that is great for snacks, baking and cooking. It’s an extremely versatile food that offers a whole variety of ways to appreciate and enjoy it. Though it has a little bit of sugar, it also contains a lot of beneficial components that can be part of a healthy and tasty diet.
And for those people who absolutely love peanut butter? Well, this day is just perfect because it’s time for National Peanut Butter Lovers Day!
History of National Peanut Butter Lovers Day
Peanuts have origins that go far back into human history. Some researchers believe that peanuts (which aren’t actually nuts at all but are really legumes) have been domesticated by humans for thousands of years! But it wasn’t turned into the modern food we call peanut butter until more recently.
After some rudimentary experimenting with peanut paste and a patent granted in 1884 to Canadian inventor, Marcellus Gilmore Edson, an unnamed doctor seems to have used peanut butter as a way to feed some of his patients a nutritious, easily edible food in the year 1890.
National Peanut Butter Lovers Day was first celebrated in 1990 to commemorate the first commercially available peanut butter in the United States. The day was founded by a collaboration between the National Peanut Board and the Adult Peanut Butter Lovers Fan Club in the US.
One great fact about National Peanut Butter Lovers Day is that it actually falls on the first day of March, several months after National Peanut Butter Lovers Month, which is in November. That way, peanut butter lovers have the opportunity to spread the celebration around throughout the year!
As it turns out, there may just be a great geographical divide in the United States among peanut butter lovers! It seems that those people who live in the West Coast of the US tend to prefer crunchy peanut butter while those living toward the East Coast would typically prefer creamy peanut butter. But whether it’s creamy or crunchy, in the west, in the east – or anywhere else in the world – National Peanut Butter Lovers Day is the perfect time to celebrate!
National Peanut Butter Lovers Day Timeline

How to Celebrate National Peanut Butter Lovers Day
National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day is the perfect time to enjoy and show appreciation for peanut butter in all its glory. Get started with some of these ideas for celebrating the day:
Learn Some Fun Facts about Peanut Butter
Raise awareness for National Peanut Butter Lovers Day by learning and sharing some delightful bits of trivia related to peanut butter. Try out some of these:
It takes approximately 540 peanuts to make a twelve ounce jar of peanut butter.

The United States has four different cities named Peanut, in these states: California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia. Plus, Pennsylvania also has cities named Lower Peanut and Upper Peanut.
Enough peanuts grow on one acre of a peanut butter farm to make approximately 35,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
Host a National Peanut Butter Lovers Day Party
National Peanut Butter Lovers Day is a great reason to have a little gathering with a few friends to celebrate the beauty of peanut butter. Invite some friends over (just be sure they aren’t friends that have a peanut allergy!) and have an entire party celebrating the merits of PB.
It might even be fun to ask friends to dress up in peanut or peanut butter lover costumes. For instance, they could come as Mr. Peanut, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or even Elvis Presley. Of course, the center of attention and guest of honor at this party would obviously be all of the peanut butter themed food that is served.
Get Creative with Peanut Butter

Sure, it makes a great peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a tasty cookie, but this might be a day to use peanut butter in some more interesting and creative ways. Create a National Peanut Butter Lovers Day Playlist
In celebration of National Peanut Butter Lovers Day, don’t forget to have a collection of tunes on hand to help enjoy the day! And, of course, this would be a great playlist to add some tunes to that party noted above.
Make a start on the playlist by enjoying some of these fun songs around the theme of peanuts and peanut butter:
Peanuts by Little Joe and the Thrillers (1957)
Peanut Butter by the Olympics (1991)
The Peanut Vendor by Dean Martin (1952)
Peanut Butter by the Marathons (1961)
Perform a Peanut Butter Taste Test
When it comes to loving peanut butter, many people are particular about the different brands of peanut butter they prefer to eat. So National Peanut Butter Lovers Day might be the ideal time to perform a little taste test, whether on your own, with family or with friends. Although it is easier to do a blind taste test when accompanied by someone else!
Arrange a blind taste test by putting peanut butter into bowls and marking them with numbers that coordinate with the different brands of peanut butter. Then choose to eat it by the spoonful, place it on a piece of bread, or dip a cracker into it. Try each type of peanut butter and see which brand is the favorite. It’s a delightful way to celebrate the day!

It’s the 4th of July and my brain went to Atlantis…Again.
I imagined Vinny making homemade fireworks and causing absolute chaos! Cookie would be having a blast on the BBQ, cooking up a shit-ton of baked beans. Mole would probably be diving headfirst into the giant bowl of potato salad. Milo would probably be reading a ton of the books in the shade of an apple tree. For some bizarre reason I can imagine Audrey, Helga and Kida joining a baseball game and getting VERY competitive. Mrs. Packard would be chatting it up with her lady friends. Meanwhile Rourke is taking the day off to work on his tan at the edge of a lake or something. Only to have his day off be interrupted by the other’s shenanigans (like a stray baseball or a . Oh, and Mr.Whitmore would probably be trying the high dive (and scarring the eyes of local children with his old gentlemanly physique).
Basically, one big chaotic multi-national family. 🥰

god i honestly hate when theres an article or passed around statement (that may or may not be true) about how [really common food/ingredient] is ~secretly bad for you~ because like. god do yall really wanna die hungry and unsatisfied bc you stopped consuming anything that wasnt Three Specific Vegetables and bottled spring water? this isnt even like a "you MUST eat chocolate, wine, three loaves of bread, one pound of rice, and a pan full of bacon grease EVERY day" but like...dont you get tired of abstaining from shit completely bc it has the potential to cause problems in the future? like having a sandwich with white bread once a week will not kill you, i promise. and its just....hm...food is something people created because generally speqking humans like variety, different tastes and textures and the like. food constantly evolved because we Wanted to expand our palates, use new spices and fruits and herbs and meats, like its a very human thing! if our ancestors didnt on some level crave bread (and other carbs) they wouldnt have gone to the trouble to keep experimenting with the ingridients. additionally a large portion of cultures and nations on the planet have Some verion of bread so like...cmon now.
and before anyones like omg shut up youre literally fat 🙄 i did in fact do the rigid restriction, keto, no-drink-but-plain-water thing for a while and it made me feel physically and emotionally awful and is still affecting the way i view food to this day. i am so fucking lucky to have access to a wide variety of diverse foods, im not going to rob and starve myself out of some misplaced desire to assign morals to food groups. like idk maybe its just me but i honestly think there will come a point when almost every food will be slapped with a negative label by Someone, and obsessing about it seems needlessly stressful. like have some cornbread baby, eat your mother's homemade cookies, have some of your niece's ice cream cake, i promise it wont kill you!
(do not come into my inbox talking about x, y, or z diet created with the intent to lose weight bc i promise i do not give a fuck)

Coming home from travel, just in time for Christmas, and ted has decorated your apartment, baked cookies, and all the other lovely Ted things -- just for you.
you wanted to let out a sob as the taxi pulled in front of the cobblestone side street, a mere hundred feet or so from your flat, from ted, from home. you weren't supposed to have been away for so long. what was supposed to be three day trip to the states to deal with a family emergency turned into a weeklong stay in kansas thanks to the many storms across the nation and shitty airlines.
going to your shared home state, ted was determined to come with you, he could see his family, see henry, and not have to be away with you. but with booking a ticket the day before a flight, you were lucky to even find a seat for yourself, plus he had important end-of-year meetings with the team's entire management team, you couldn't let him miss those for you.
you dreaded spending three days away from ted, so when that separation was extended by four days, including you missing out on christmas, your heart absolutely broke. your absence, even though out of your control, added to the dread you know ted was already feeling from henry not coming for the holidays. sure he would see henry in five months, and he was staying for the whole summer! but it wasn't the same. transcontinental parenting sucked sometimes, and this was one of those times, and you weren't even there to help it feel a little less sucky.
after a three-hour flight from KC to new york, a seven-hour flight from JFK to heathrow, and the thirty-minute drive from london to richmond, you were absolutely beat. you paid the taxi driver, wishing them a happy holidays before trudging to way to your flat, checking your phone to make sure you hadn't missed a text from ted. he still hadn't answered from when you let him know you had landed, not that you were surprised. it was 2:30 in the morning on boxing day, you begged ted not to wait up for you, insisting that he needed sleep after a day of celebrating with the team at the higgins' household per the tradition formed two years ago.
you carry your suitcase up the stairs, thankful that you only took a carry-on and not a checked bag, knowing the larger (and heavier) option likely would have resulted in waking up at least one neighbor. a small smile rests on your face when you notice a faint light coming from the crack under the door, ted left the entryway light on for you, of course he did, he was always thinking of you. but when you opened the door after undoing the lock, a small gasp leaves your lips when you take in the apartment. the entire living room was covered in lights, christmas lights strung along every wall and emitting a soft glow.
a vinyl of christmas classics played softly from the record player on your bookshelf, a barely-heard humming to the music made its way through the apartment. leaving your backpack and suitcase in the entryway and softly toeing off your shoes after hanging up your coat, you tiptoe to the kitchen, tears pooling in your eyes from what you see. there he is, the love of your life, in flannel pajama bottoms and a chiefs tee, his side profile on display as he stands at the counter next to the over, spooning cookie dough onto a baking sheet.
sensing your presence, ted looks up and turns to you, a smile growing on your face when he sees you, a glimmer in your eyes, "well hey there, darling." you look around the kitchen, seeing some decorated sugar cookies on the table next to some bare cookies and bowls of frosting, seemingly so you can decorate the rest together. apple and cinnamon fill the air, drawing your eyes to the stove where a pot of apple cider, your favorite, is cooking, homemade you presume. you turn your gaze back to ted, who has been looking at you this whole time, a loving look in his eyes, "wh-what is this?"
ted wipes cookie dough crumbs onto his apron before eliminating the space between the two of you. it is only when he places his hand on your cheek, wiping away a tear, that you realize you're crying, "merry christmas, sweetheart." you shake your head slightly, still a bit confused but also in denial that someone would ever want to do something like this for you, "but it's the 26th." ted swipes away one more tear before pointing at the wall you're standing next to, pointing at the daily rip-away calendar hanging there, the paper reading 25, "nope, you're normally always right honey, but not this time. see, right there, it says it's december 25th. christmas, not the 26th."
you turn your head to look over your shoulder, showing a tight smile as tears continue to run down your face as while you turn back to ted, "ted, you didn't need to do this, i'm late, you already celebrated..." ted shakes his head, holding your head in between his hands as he takes a step closer, placing his face right in front of yours so you are forced to look into your eyes, "i was around people celebrating the holidays, not even all of them were celebrating. but that was them, and i was happy to be with them. but my girl wasn't there, you weren't there, so no, i haven't already celebrated. nothing important happens without you."
ted's lips meet yours in a sweet kiss, both of you tasting some salt from the tears that had run down to your lips. though neither of you are bothered, you are simply happy to be reunited after a week apart. you concede, too enamored with ted and in awe of his loving act to argue with him anymore. you pull away slightly, running your tongue across your lips to capture your tears as ted rests his forehead against yours. "merry christmas, teddy," you whisper, a soft smile on ted's face in response, "merry christmas, sweetheart."

Sunday, October 1, 2023 - National Homemade Cookies Day
My all-time favorite cookie recipe comes from the Northern Exposure Cookbook. It’s Ruth-Anne’s oatmeal cookies. I jotted down the ingredients onto a post-it note years ago from my grandma’s copy of the cookbook. I usually add chocolate chips (not part of the original recipe). Sometimes I mix in a bag of trail mix. Today’s cookies got most of a bag of banana split trail mix - chocolate covered peanuts, dried banana chips, roasted cashews, dried pineapple, and dried cherries.
Happy National Homemade Cookies Day!

Happy Birthday to Nina!!!
Nina's birthday is on the 7th, which of course puts her three days after the 4th of July
Leftover burgers (sometimes not necessarily cooked already, like there was some left to grill)
Discount cupcakes
Sparklers! Ever since she was a little girl, the night of the 7th was spent running through the backyard with sparklers and drawing her new age in the air.
Still, her birthday is very much her day and not just 4th of July leftovers
Has definitely spent her birthday at Cedar Point at some point, although even she grows tired of there being almost nothing other than coasters.
Waking up at exactly 7 am to make a wish on a passing cloud
Riding her bike on the trail running through Cuyahoga Valley National Park
After coming to Anubis House, she gets multiple IMs, calls, and texts from her housemates. Fabian calls and sings her happy birthday, which makes her whole morning.
She feels awkward doing so, but at 2 pm she shoots a quick text of happy birthday to Joy and gets a bunch of emojis and emoticons in response that she thinks means happy birthday because Joy didn't use words
Gran takes her to get birthday freebies
Eddie coordinated a visit one time to Cedar Point to fall on Nina's birthday and he drags her up there
Mostly though, she spends the day outside with her family, eating homemade cookies and cake
Blowing out the candles with a smile

National Peanut Butter Day
Spread this creamy, nutty treat far and wide, experiment with mouthwatering recipes or tuck into a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Who doesn’t love peanut butter? Whether as an ingredient in a candy bar or some cookies, or simply eaten by the spoonful, pretty much everyone loves it in some way or another. And, of course, it provides the most important ingredient to one of America’s favorite quick and easy meals: the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.
So now it’s time to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day!
History of National Peanut Butter Day
Peanut butter is a culinary treat that actually most people think is a fairly modern invention, as food histories go. However, that may not be exactly the case.
I’m going to take this God-given gift of being funny, and I’m going to spread it out like peanut butter on everything I do.
Peanut butter, as it is known today, has only been around for a little over a hundred years. But, actually, there is some evidence that ancient Aztec and Inca peoples may have been grinding peanuts into a sort of paste several hundred years ago (or maybe even a few thousand years ago!).
As far as the modern world is concerned, peanut butter arrived via the United States at some time in the late 1800s. Some theories claim that, like many foods, peanut butter probably started in someone’s kitchen in their home. One popular theory suggests that a woman named Rose Davis started making peanut butter in New York at some point in the 1840s. She got the idea from her son, who had learned about something similar that was being made in Cuba at the time.
Many people credit George Washington Carver with the invention of producing peanut butter but, while he was an amazing inventor credited with more than 300 uses for peanuts and is considered the father of the peanut industry, Carver did not actually invent peanut butter.
The creation of modern peanut butter, along with its production processes, can be traced back to at least three more people. In fact, it was Canadian Marcellus Edson who patented “peanut paste” first, back in 1884, but this was created from roasted peanuts. In 1895, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, of the famed Kellogg’s cereal company, filed to patent a process using raw peanuts to create peanut butter, which was then referred to as “nut meal”. Then, in 1903, a peanut butter-making machine was patented by Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis, Missouri.
As far as National Peanut Butter Day is concerned, it seems that this auspicious occasion was created many years ago, to allow peanut butter lovers to celebrate the creation of this wonderful food. And celebration is the whole purpose of the day!
National Peanut Butter Day Timeline
14th Century A.D. Peanut butter is invented
The Incan peoples of Peru are believed to have been the first to mash up peanuts into paste and use it for food. It was more coarse than modern peanut butter (and was likely unsweetened) but was the predecessor to today’s smoother, sweeter version.
1840 Rose Davis creates modern peanut butter
A resident of New York, Rose Davis was rumored to have gotten the idea for peanut butter from her son, who had traveled to Cuba. So she started making it in her own kitchen.
1884 First peanut butter patent is granted in the United States
Marcellus Gilmore Edson was a Canadian chemist who first applied for (and was granted) a patent for a peanut paste which he called “peanut candy”. Although he held the patent, no evidence shows that he never actually made the product available commercially.
1890 Bayle’s Peanut Butter claims status as “original”
St. Louis food manufacturer, Bayle’s, is rumored to have collaborated with a doctor who was looking for ways for patients to ingest protein when they could not chew meat. This led to the production of ground peanut paste, which was originally sold from barrels for 6 cents per pound.
1928 Peter Pan becomes the first branded peanut butter
Receiving a license for his creative churning process from inventor Joseph L. Rosenfeld, Peter Pan makes its name on the market. This is followed only a few years later by Rosenfeld’s own brand, Skippy.
How to Celebrate National Peanut Butter Day
Celebrating this day can be something super simple or extra involved. No matter how it is enjoyed, Peanut Butter is the star of the show on this day! Try out some of these ideas for getting involved:
Enjoy Eating Some Peanut Butter
Peanut butter can be eaten and used in many different recipes, whether sweet or savory, baked or fried. Plus, a lot of people see nothing wrong in sitting down and indulging in a jar of the creamy or crunchy delight with a spoon. What more would a person need? Today is the day that can be best appreciated in whatever way each person’s taste buds enjoy the most.
There are some individuals who commit to eating nothing but peanut butter-themed foods on National Peanut Butter Day. There are even schools that will serve peanut butter sandwiches to their students on this festive day. What better sandwich is there in the world?
Try Some New Peanut Butter Recipes
Families and friends can celebrate National Peanut Butter Day by getting together and creating delicious recipes containing peanut butter, from cookies and cakes to sauces. These can of course be consumed at home, or some prefer to make a day of it and go on a picnic-style outing. No matter what way it is eaten, getting creative in the kitchen with peanut butter can be a whole load of fun!
Try out some of these ideas for creating peanut butter dishes:
Crispy Tofu Stir Fry with Cauliflower Rice. Super delicious and vegan (which is great for the health and the environment), this Asian inspired dish tosses cubes of tofu into a peanut butter marinade sauce after being baked and also pan fried.
African Peanut Soup. Filled with chicken, nutritious sweet potatoes and other vegetables, this peanut soup is super healthy and also delicious!
Peanut Butter Frozen Yogurt. Easier than it sounds, this recipe simply requires combining premade yogurt, peanut butter, vanilla extract and maple syrup. Place in bite-sized dollups on a parchment lined cookie sheet and freeze (or make them into popsicles). A perfectly delightful summer snack for kids and adults!
Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream. Speaking of frozen treats, why not make one out of the tasty ingredients of this classic American sandwich? The combination of sweet with salty is fabulous–especially when using crunchy peanut butter!
Share Some Peanut Butter Treats
After checking to be sure there aren’t any allergies, a great way to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day is by making (or buying) and sharing a variety of treats that include peanut butter.
Take a plate of peanut butter cookies to share with coworkers at the office, create a peanut butter pie to give to the neighbors, or take a close friend out to a restaurant for a peanut butter shake! National Peanut Butter Day is certainly tasty in any way that it is celebrated, but most people will find that it is best enjoyed when shared with others!
Learn Some Facts for National Peanut Butter Day
In celebration of National Peanut Butter Day, it’s time to brush up on some interesting facts and tidbits that can be shared with friends, while also sharing a peanut butter sandwich.
Peanut Butter was officially introduced to the world at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, USA where a businessman named George Bayle started selling it. But it still took some time to gain popularity.
The first recorded recipe for a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich was in 1901. It was written by Julia Davis Chandler and published in the Boston Cooking School Magazine.
In the United States, in order for a product to be labeled as “peanut butter” it must contain at least 90% peanuts. This rule keeps the manufacturers from substituting other ingredients into the mix.
The US has elected two different peanut farmers to represent them as the President of the United States of America. These include Thomas Jefferson of Virginia (who was president between 1801 and 1809) and Jimmy Carter of Georgia (who was president between 1977 and 1981). However, since peanut butter didn’t yet exist when Jefferson was president, the peanuts grown on his farms were probably not used to make this delicious treat.
