Flower in a desert?

The picture, taken by Belgian photographer Marie-Thérèse Ullens de Schooten (1905-1989), on the road to Mashhad in Iran, shows a beautifully otherworldly plant of the genus Ferula. Most likely, it is a specimen of Ferula foetida, a species that occurs over a wide swath of Eastern Iran, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan. Along with several other species of Ferula that grow wild in Iran, it is the source of the spice asafoetida.

Another, unidentified species of Ferula is considered a likely candidate for the source of the ancient spice and medicinal herb silphium, highly valued by the Greeks and Romans. It was produced only in Cyrenaica, the coastal region of what is now eastern Libya, and was reported to have become extinct in Roman times, due to excessive exploitation and/or the progressive desertification of the area.

Day 8 - Cowboy riding into the sunset in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming on April 22, 2005. A client called me needing photos of a silhouetted cowboy riding into the sunset for a marketing campaign. I talked one of my best friends into saddling his horse and helping me and luckily we got a great sunset.

May is National Photography Month. Explore over 2000 images from our virtual collection of Early Photography of Japan!

Early Photography of Japan is a virtual collection of more than 40 souvenir photograph albums and illustrated publications with over 2,000 images from Widener Library, the Fine Arts Library, and Harvard-Yenching Library. These images primarily document the early history of commercial photography in Japan and are representative of what is often called Japanese tourist photography or Yokohama shashin. They reflect the Western image of traditional Japanese culture before the dramatic transformation brought about by modernization during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

This image is from the “Views of Tokyo, Japan,” an album of 30 hand-colored albumen prints from the Meiji period.

National Photography Month and another favorite photo from the last 25 years.

Day 7 - Image from breakfast before a photo shoot at Gabriel’s Cafe in El Paso, Texas on September 21, 2010. I assisted for a commercial photographer in Fort Collins, Colorado. A great guy, a great photographer, and a great friend, even though he is a CSU fan, go Wyoming Cowboys! He hired me as a part-time assistant just out of college in 1999 and to this day, he still hires me for big photo shoots, or I hire him for big photo shoots. He taught me a lot over the years and we still have way to much fun working together. Many of our photo shoots are on the top of my all-time favorite shoots. He also still introduces me to his clients as Cowboy Matt.

To celebrate National Photography Month, we're taking a look back at the 'Ravine' exhibit from the 2019 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival. . Ravine is a portrait of an environment created with natural elements in conjunction with objects that symbolize the evidence of human presence. It focuses on the beauty of nature through a variety of plant life and evokes the feeling of a playful and youthful past. The artists constructed vignettes that replicate memories, and, as with the formation of memories, there is always a hint of fabrication.  More on the site!
