The 9/11 Attacks: A Nation In Shock
Tumblr media
On the fateful morning of September 11, 2001, the world watched in horror as a series of coordinated terrorist attacks unfolded on U.S. soil.
The attacks, orchestrated by the extremist group Al-Qaeda, targeted the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
These events would come to be known simply as "9/11" and would leave an indelible mark on the United States and the world.
The Twin Towers: The World Trade Center towers, iconic symbols of economic prowess and architectural achievement, were the primary targets. Two hijacked commercial airliners were flown into the towers, causing catastrophic damage and eventually leading to their collapse. The attacks on the Twin Towers claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, making it one of the deadliest acts of terrorism in history.
The Pentagon Attack: In addition to the attacks on the Twin Towers, another hijacked plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. The strike resulted in significant damage and loss of life, further escalating the national crisis.
Flight 93's Heroic Sacrifice: Amidst the chaos, a fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was also hijacked. Passengers on board, learning of the other attacks via phone calls, bravely fought back against the hijackers. The plane ultimately crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, preventing another potential target, likely in Washington, D.C.
Immediate Impact: The 9/11 attacks sent shockwaves through the United States and the world. In the immediate aftermath, there was a profound sense of grief, fear, and anger. The nation was united in mourning, and a strong sense of solidarity emerged.
Response and Consequences: The U.S. government, under President George W. Bush, launched a war on terror, with a focus on eliminating Al-Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden. The Patriot Act was enacted to strengthen national security, but it also raised concerns about civil liberties.
Homeland Security and Airport Security: The attacks prompted a significant overhaul of U.S. security measures, including the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Airport security was enhanced with more rigorous screenings and the establishment of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Global Implications: Internationally, the 9/11 attacks had far-reaching consequences. The United States engaged in military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, leading to a prolonged period of conflict in the region. The attacks also reshaped global politics and intensified discussions on counterterrorism efforts.
Memorials and Remembrance: In the years following the attacks, several memorials were erected to honor the victims and remember the events of 9/11. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City stands on the site of the former Twin Towers, serving as a poignant reminder of the tragedy.
Never Forget: As the years have passed, the phrase "Never Forget" has become synonymous with 9/11. It serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost, the heroism displayed, and the enduring impact of that tragic day.
In conclusion, the 9/11 attacks were a watershed moment in American history, leaving the nation in shock and reshaping its policies and security measures.
The scars of that day remain, but so does the resilience and unity of a nation determined to stand strong in the face of adversity.

Remembering September 11th 2001
Watching 9/11: Inside the President's War Room on AppleTV was like opening a time capsule from the darkest day of my childhood. I was just eight years old, and I can still recall the chaos and confusion as I was rushed into the main hall of my school. There, we gathered in silence, eyes glued to the screen as the unthinkable unfolded. Planes hit the Twin Towers, and the world changed forever.
Tumblr media
The documentary stirred emotions I hadn’t felt in years, emotions buried beneath the layers of time and the rush of life.
As I watched the events of that day play out once more, I was transported back to that innocent child, who couldn’t fully grasp the magnitude of what was happening but felt the fear and uncertainty in the air. The images on the screen were the same ones that haunted my young mind for years, images of destruction and despair, of lives lost and a nation under attack.
No matter how much time passes, we must never forget what happened on September 11, 2001. That day, the world stood still, and we all bore witness to a moment that would reshape our lives and our collective history. It was a day of unspeakable horror, but also one of extraordinary bravery and resilience. The firefighters who rushed into the burning buildings, the passengers who fought back on Flight 93, the countless heroes who emerged in the aftermath—these stories remind us of the incredible strength of the human spirit.
In the years since, there have been countless debates about who or how it started, but one thing is indisputable: September 11th changed America and the world forever. Our sense of security was shattered, our way of life irrevocably altered. The ripples of that day are still felt in the policies we live under, the wars fought in its name, and the scars it left on our collective psyche.
The innocence of my eight-year-old self was lost that day, replaced by a somber understanding that the world could be a dangerous place. Yet, amid the sorrow and the fear, there was also a profound sense of unity and resolve. Strangers comforted one another, communities came together, and a nation found strength in its darkest hour.
As I reflect on those memories, now with the perspective of an adult, I realise how crucial it is to keep them alive. To honour those who perished and those who survived, to teach future generations about the courage and resilience that emerged from the ashes. We owe it to the past and the future to remember September 11th not just as a day of tragedy, but as a testament to the enduring human spirit.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, was the same after September 11, 2001. The world we knew was gone, but in its place, we found a deeper sense of what it means to be human. To love, to grieve, to stand together in the face of unimaginable loss. As we move forward, let us carry these lessons with us, keeping the memory of that day alive in our hearts and minds.
May we never forget.

Richard Bausch, author of "Before, During, After," talks about how each of us has our own private traumas that can often supercede public traumas.  This full interview from a 2015 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" can be heard now wherever you get your podcasts.

This inevitable insurrection has been fed for years of lies and division created by the president and supported by the top arbiters of congress and feeding the far right extremists have been given privilege and calls to violence. If there was ever a reason to invoke the 25th amendment this is it. A reckoning for everything that led to this needs to be fixed because if we don't, the next time could be worse.

Dr. Wes here again everyone, it hurts to have to make back-to-back IG posts on national tragedies but our country and especially its kids have had a horrible past couple weeks, and the shooting in Texas a few days ago was a special sort of anguish. @iambeckyg posted up this collage of the children who lost their lives in the deadly onslaught at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, and seeing each of those faces is like a new gut punch every time. Especially for a parent or anyone planning on starting a family soon but also for America in general, as we mourn yet another horrific tragedy in our schools. Like Sandy Hook all over again, but in some ways even more tragic with the news that law enforcement waited over an hour (78 minutes) to move in and take out the shooter (and even then it was an off-duty Border Patrol agent). Que descansen en paz, niños inocentes, y que Dios esté con Ustedes y sus familias. I could finish this with a note of cynicism and resignation about anything being done to prevent this in the future, and the truth it's probably justified, but the US is already rife with such corrosive sentiment. Right now, there's still a need for blood donations for all those still recovering from their injuries at that nightmarish scene. If you're anywhere nearby, please consider giving blood; we need all types and as much as we can store up. #uvalde #uvaldeshooting #nationaltragedy #schoolshooting #massshooting #texasshooting #shootingintexas #robbelementary #deathofachild #lossofachild #lostinnocence #perdidadelainocencia #masacredelosinocentes #tiroteo #tiroteoenuvalde #tiroteoentexas #tiroteoentejas #tragedianacional  #salvadorramos #elementaryschool #schoolmassacre #sandyhook #78minutes #niñosinocentes #iambeckyg #beckyg #blooddonations #giveblood #donateblood (at Uvalde, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeKrpbRMe6i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Run Violence” The absolute tragedy of Ahmaud Arbery’s death and the injustice in its aftermath continues to haunt the nation, adding insult to injury in these troubled times. Arbery’s murder came at the hands of a former Employee for the DA in Georgia and his adult son who followed the harmless jogger and shot him from a pickup truck. The white supremacists excuse being a series of local burglaries, so 2+2=5, effectively. The absolute circus thereafter with a boys club of former cop buddies who’ve had to recuse themselves, and legal loopholes that have dragged out the “hate crime” status, not mention whomever shot the death on video remaining at large. With this quarantine the freedom to be in the public space now seems even more nonexistent, when your only crime is being black. 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 🕯 #inmemoriam #ahmaudarbery #justiceforahmaudarbery #whitesupremacyisterrorism #pumpedupkicks #digitalcollage #weekinreview #shameful #nationaltragedy #editorialillustration #activistart #opinionart #oped #adineroillustration https://www.instagram.com/p/CAGpIw9pkiW/?igshid=17tw9fgwrcry0

Isn’t it strange how this shooter Stephen Paddock was an employee of Lockheed Martin who is the world’s largest defense contractor? I have heard they treat their employees very badly often subjecting them to very intense lie detector tests, etc. they keep their thumb on the pulse of their employee’s lives. So far 2 mass shootings have come from ex employees of this place. Just saying...sleeper cell. This man had no previous history of violence or mental illness, he was subjected to various background checks etc, just in the process of getting all of those guns. So this happens, just out of the blue? He wakes up one day and decides to do this? No history of training concerning heavy artillery whatsoever? It makes sense. Think about it. My heart goes out to all of the victims and all of those injured. I am proud of all of the heroes I have read about saving lives concerning this horrific act, America is proud of you.

It's me Dr. Wes again, first off thanks to all of you in our wonderful fanbase sending well-wishes recently while I've been battling this horrible pneumonia, I greatly appreciate it. I kind of went AWOL from the news and events while just trying to survive this thing, and it's been an adjustment practically waking up to this brave new world since Memorial Day. Some friends helped to keep me abreast of the events in Minnesota and I saw that wrenching video of what happened to George Floyd. I've laid eyes on some grisly, terrible sights but nothing prepared me for the abject disgust and horror of what Derek Chauvin did to him. I know how divided the US can be these days and (based on some of your comments in my feed) how we can get shoved into opposing camps by the way America has been polarized, but what transpired that day in downtown Minneapolis is the type of thing that should cut through all the walls that divide us. Whatever one's opinions about Mr. Floyd and his flaws (as all of us have), no human being, no sentient being should suffer what he did, having his life slowly crushed out of him by a kneeling, grinning psychopath. It was appalling, and to anyone with a shred of empathy, only outrage and sadness should emerge as a response. Whatever else may cross our minds in regard to events nowadays, let's try to set all that aside in this case and just keep things simple, to sympathize with Mr. Floyd his family and to make sure they see justice. . . . . . . #georgefloyd #justice #policebrutality #protests #marches #policereform #marchesforjustice #Minneapolis #Minnesota #nationaltragedy #juneteenth #mural #georgefloydprotests #minneapolisprotests #memorialday #memorialday2020 #pneumonia #pneumoniarecovery #thankstofans #derekchauvin #wrenchingscene #wrenchingvideo #lungs #respiratorysymptoms (at Minneapolis Minn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBrr8KMpVD5/?igshid=kww7qvnrkwys
