I spent an hour at Hildacy Farm Preserve yesterday trying to get a photograph that had both a bumblebee and a snowberry clearwing moth (a bumblebee mimic), but all I could manage was a bumblebee next to a hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe). But I’m still posting because it’s a moth, and it’s National Moth Week.

Snowberry clearwing moth (Hemaris diffinis) nectaring on wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). Because it’s Moth Week, apparently. Hildacy Farm Preserve, Media, PA.

Ground crab spider (Xysticus sp.) patiently waiting on a leaf with two (2!) pairs of raptorial legs at the ready. Might look adorable on a phone screen, but viewed large it’s pretty terrifying. As always, glad to be large mammal. Hildacy Farm Preserve, Media, PA.

Oleander aphids (Aphis nerii) lined up on milkweed pedicels. Pestiferous and introduced (from Mediterranean), but you have to admit they are beautiful against the purple, eh? I believe the yellow pigment is a carotenoid, which animals can’t make. But aphids do. All thanks to some aphid ancestor, millions of years ago, that integrated a fungal carotenoid gene (or genes) into its genome. Present day color diversity among aphids is due to the subsequent duplication and modification of those genes. Evolution, folks.

Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis) waiting for prey near crown vetch (Securigera varia). Once fully grown they can take down small hummingbirds. They also eat pollen, so they’re pollinators, too. From China, obviously … and introduced to U.S. near Philadelphia (and thus near me), probably in plants shipped to area by noted nurseryman Thomas Meehan. Hildacy Farm Preserve, Media, PA.

Get ready to run for nature at Natural Lands Trust’s 2nd annual ChesLen Chase for Open Space, with 10K, 5K and Fun Run-Walk!  The challenge trail runs include steep hills, a creek crossing, woodlands, and open fields.

The fun continues after crossing the finish line with a post-race party at ChesLen’s Lenfest Center, featuring brews and BBQ from Victory Brewing Company, live music by the Mojo Gypsies, and an awards ceremony.

Race day registration and packet pick-up: Saturday, October 24, 8:30 – 10:30 am

10K Trail Run – 11:00 am $40 Pre-registration (on or before October 10), $45 Late and Race Day Registration (after October 10)

5K Trail Run – 11:00 am $30 Pre-registration (on or before October 10), $35 Late and Race Day Registration (after October 10)

2-mile Fun Run-Walk – 11:15 am $20 Pre-registration (on or before October 10), $25 Late and Race Day Registration (after October 10)

Natural Lands Trust members receive $5 discount! (Choose your correct category during on-line registration.)  (Not a Natural Lands Trust member yet? Join Today!)

Awards:

Top overall female and male finishers in 10K and 5K races

Top three female and male finishers in 10K and 5K races in the following age groups: 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-up

No awards for Fun Run-Walk

Race Schwag: Technical T-shirts for all registered participants. Pre-registration required to guarantee shirt size and availability. (Shirts are not guaranteed for late or race day registrants.)

Post-race Party: Thanks to our friends at Victory Brewing Company, who are sponsoring ChesLen Chase for Open Space with great beer and food. All registered runners receive one free beer and sandwich after the race. Additional brews and sandwiches are available for purchase from Victory’s iconic “Brew Pub on Wheels” truck!

The Mojo Gypsies will be playing live, delivering high-octane, rockin’ rhythm and blues to the epic, post-race party.

Race Course: Rugged 10K and 5K trail runs begin at the Lenfest Center, and proceed counter-clockwise through ChesLen Preserve.
