Favorite Archetypal Evil Villains

Jafar - If there's one villain who defines villainy, in all its classical, theatrical, archetypal glory, it's Jafar from Disney's Aladdin. He's got it all: the black robe, hat and cape, the elongated face, the arched eyebrows and glaring eyes, the twisted beard, the shoulder spikes on his outfit, the pathetic sidekick, the secret lair, the dark magic powers, the snake-shaped staff, and the deliciously sinister voice courtesy of Jonathan Freeman. He unashamedly seeks power and dominion over all, engages in any ruthless means possible to achieve it, and has a dry, witty and sophisticated personality that eventually gives way to bombastic, cackling madness as he wreaks sorcerous havoc on his foes. How can you not love to hate him? Beyond the iconic Disney version, I must also give praise to the live-action version from Once Upon a Time, played by Naveen Andrews on the In Wonderland spin-off that he serves as the Big Bad of and by Oded Fehr on the main show. This version manages to embody all that is great about the character while excising the cartoony caricatured aspects in favor of a darker, more realistic and frightening take who commits some truly heinous (and violent!) atrocities.

No Heart - From The Care Bears Family we have this dark wizard, who has much less of a personality than Jafar but stylistically accomplishes a similar feat in representing evil. Living in a twisted castle that resides within perpetually storming clouds, No Heart is a demonic conjurer who seeks to rid the world of love, friendship, caring, and all tender feelings. Powered by a mystic amulet, No Heart is capable of transforming into anything he pleases, from vicious animals to a freaking tornado. While generally depicted as a serious and legitimately creepy threat, especially in the first season, No Heart does have his moments of comedy when playing off of his dim-witted minion Beastly and spoiled teenage niece Shreeky. Incidentally, a new version of the character appeared this year in the series finale of Care Bears: Unlock the Magic. While not nearly as fearsome as the original incarnation, this version of No Heart is still the most dangerous threat this series' Care Bears have ever had to contend with, pulling off a Near Villain Victory before the Care Bears saving and making peace with their regular foes, the Bad Crowd, unleashed a wave of positive energy that vanquished the demon in No Heart, turning him into a good human sorcerer (an outcome lifted straight from Dark Heart of the second Care Bears movie, a somewhat similar villain. Which honestly begs the question both times as to what to call them now. Just "Heart"!?)

Naveen Andrews Joins Paramount+’s ‘Last King Of The Cross’ Season 2

EXCLUSIVE: Naveen Andrews has joined the cast of Paramount+‘s Australian drama series Last King of the Cross.

He will play lead antagonist Ray Kinnock in the second season of the show, which tells the story of Sydney nightclub kingpin John Ibrahim (Lincoln Younes) and his brother Sam (Claude Jabbour).

Filming is underway on season 2 in Sydney, as John sights set on capturing a new kingdom — the glittering prize of Oxford Street, Sydney’s nightclub empire.

Andrews will bring to life the fictional character of Ray Kinnock, who is determined to either keep John out, or take him down. The actor is best known for his role on ABC cult drama Lost, for which he won a Screen Actors Guild award along with the rest of the cast. He also appeared in the iconic classic movie The English Patient and, most recently, The Dropout, alongside Amanda Seyfried and is a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award nominee.

Also joining the show for season two are Luke Arnold (Scrublands, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart) and Matuse (The Fall Guy, Furiosa), who will play Dean Taylor and Benny respectively, two new drug lords hell-bent on bringing their booming trade into John’s clubs.

Paramount Australia’s Creative Advisor Drama, Rick Maier said: “Going up against the Ibrahims on screen is no easy task. Naveen promises to give Lincoln and Claude a run for their money. He’s a brilliant actor, and a fantastic inclusion for series two.

“The addition of Luke and Matuse, only add weight to the feeling that this is the hottest ticket in town for actors keen to join this red hot ensemble. They will be terrific.”

“Naveen is a highly respected and celebrated actor who has captivated audiences with stunning performances in major hits such as Lost, The English Patient, Bride and Prejudice and more recently The Dropout,” added Mark Fennessy from producer Helium Pictures. A massive addition to Last King of The Cross, as our primary antagonist, he brings a delicious mix of cool and class to a diverse and multi-talented cast”.

Last King of The Cross comes from Helium Pictures with Cineflix Rights as the exclusive international distribution partner. The series received major production investment from Paramount Australia in association with Screen Australia and is financed with support from Screen NSW through the Made in NSW fund and Fulcrum Media Finance. Post, digital and visual effects supported by Screen NSW and Screen Queensland.

i assumed for a while that you were into bbc sherlock because of your icon but it occurred to me recently that you could be into other things from his filmography lol

Judging based on when this image was first saved to my computer, this has been my user image on various sites consistently for about 10 years now. It was definitely already my LJ icon when I first made a tumblr. So there's a good chance the impetus for changing it (from idk whatever I used a lot before this, maybe Naveen Andrews?) was probably BBC Sherlock. So you're maybe not that far off? I watched the first two series of Sherlock and enjoyed a lot of it, although it wasn't without its weaknesses. It went a bit downhill after and I didn't keep up with the show or the fandom. I do keep up a role play that's a modern day take on Sherlock Holmes where we based the physical appearance of the characters and a bit of the modernization of the characterization on the Moffat-Gatiss show, but it's pretty divorced from the actual series at this point. (The current iteration of this RP starts with their meeting and completely re-writes everything with no regard for what happened in the show, so it's really that Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are the faces of the characters, but very little else.)

I will say my interest in Sherlock and Martin Freeman really was a bit the other way around, though -- I'd been a fan of Martin Freeman on The Office since around 2003 when it was wrapping up and I binged it by ordering the DVDs online (lol) and had watched some of his other TV shows/appearances (which on the whole were a mixed bag, but had some good moments) before Sherlock came on. I was excited for Sherlock largely because "omg it's Tim from The Office!" Similarly, I was absolutely vibrating out of my skin with excitement when rumors first started circulating that he might be cast as Bilbo in The Hobbit, and for all that those films have their faults, I still think that was absolutely impeccable casting, and I can never imagine young Bilbo any other way. There was definitely a point where I'd watch just about anything he did, and he's still one of those actors I'd probably follow into a show or movie I wouldn't otherwise watch, although I haven't kept up with his most recent work as closely. I'm definitely more a general fan of him than a fan specifically and narrowly of Sherlock, though, and I haven't actually seen the last couple series of Sherlock.

Anyway, having had him as my icon for literally 10 years across multiple platforms, at this point it's just ... kind of a part of my online identity. I see it and think "that's me!" not "that's my icon of Martin Freeman." But yes, based on the dates I can see on my computer, I'm pretty sure it became my icon around the lead up to series 2 of Sherlock, so not necessarily a wrong assumption!

YES Robin Hood is a fox in that film but hey he’s still hot af and I was like 9 or something when I watched it 😂 I forgot to mention Disney’s 1953 Peter Pan, Prince Naveen, Gerard Butler from the 2004 Phantom film (guilty as charged), Rachel York in Kiss Me Kate, Colin Firth (basicccc), Amy Adams, Jenna Coleman, 70s Cher, Cherie Chung - a local Hong Kong actress in the 80-90s who will forever be the epitome of beauty to me and yeah Andrew Garfield is cute! I never watched Sherlock but I am/was a Doctor Who fan so I had a short Matt Smith phase lmao. I was also obsessed with the singer JJ Lin when I was 16. But Brian!!! Hoo I actually got a horrible start with him because back when I didn’t know much of anything about Queen my friend made me read this RPF as a joke - basically an extensive epic-novel piece of Brian-centric porn with plot that involves Roger, Brian, Adam (yes it’s present day) and a freakishly young Y/N doing… stuff (i feel like if you’ve even caught a glimpse of this fic’s summary you’ll KNOW this is what I’m talking about). it TRAUMATIZED me, and I couldn’t even bear to look at him without nauseating images flashing in my mind lmao. But um yeah I did see that photo you linked, also that other low angle shot of him playing guitar in 1974 and just the entire Music Life 1976 photoshoot and my world was ✨forever changed✨ BUT um your next sentence… that never crossed my mind😭✋ I personally don’t really have a specific limit but it sort of ends somewhere in the mid 1990s although I do understand how some people thirst for him beyond that,, to a certain extent 😃

*sigh* I absolutely know the fic you’re talking about. I hate to speak negatively about fics publicly but I think that one is a little infamous in the fandom lol. It’s definitely not the only old man smut out there, though. I enjoy reading posts and fics lusting over current Brian to my mom lmao. I wish I’d recorded some of her reactions. I’ve done it to some friends too and they’re like 🤯 Now you have a new mental image for that ‘74 pic ;) We all get that moment with Brian like *Squidward voice* oh no he’s hot!!!!

Ah, favorite musicals! My all time favorite is Sweeney Todd. I do prefer the movie adaptation and think it’s the most cohesive version of the show, but I still like the stage show. I can go on about that one for a long time. Others, in no particular order, are: Into the Woods, Les Misérables, Hamilton, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Book of Mormon, Company, Fiddler on the Roof, and Avenue Q. I’d say Into the Woods to JCS are in my top 5 with Sweeney Todd and the others are ones I really enjoy.
