For-give me a break!
____
JOKE-OGRAPHY: 1. In this story, Jesus is telling the disciples about forgiveness.  He starts by telling them how to handle a sinner in their community.  First, meet him alone and explain his fault.  If he repents, you've won back your brother.  If not, bring some friends and try again.  If he still won't repent, bring in the church (the local congregation).  If he still won't repent, treat him as you would a Gentile or tax-collector (that is, shun him).  Essentially, an arrogantly sinful person damages their community and must be excommunicated. 2. Now Jesus has told the apostles what to do if someone doesn't repent.  What if they DO repent, but then fall to sin again?  Peter asks Jesus how many times they should be willing to forgive a sinner.  He offers the number seven, but Jesus says, "Not seven times, but seventy-seven times."  This seems to be an allusion to Lamech's boast in Genesis: "I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.  If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."  While Lamech uses this number to express infinite vengeance, Jesus turns it on its head and uses it to express infinite mercy.  While an unrepentant sinner must be turned away until his pride yields, a repentant sinner must always be welcomed back to the fold. 3. In this cartoon, Peter makes the "seven times" suggestion, as in the Bible, but he also manifests the number seven to illustrate his suggestion, as a Sesame Street character might do.  Jesus tells him it should be more than seven, so Peter, logically, suggests the next number: eight.  Jesus tilts the physically manifested integer onto its side then gives His approval.  The joke, dear reader, is not that Jesus is a cat Who topples things, willy OR nilly.  Nay, the joke, most beautiful literate, is that an eight on its side looks like the symbol for infinity.  By doing this, Jesus implies that forgiveness should be infinite.  The same lesson as the Bible story, but with HUMOR. 4. This is funny.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Hold onto your keisters, boys and girls.  The oldest of you might've recognized this cartoon.  That's because it's another Tomics Resurrection, where I've breached the forbidden crypts of cartoons past, smashed open a sarcophagus, dragged its ancient denizen onto a stone altar, and chanted terrible dark words among foul-smelling candles until the old cartoon's husk twitched and cracked its way back to colorful life!  How does the new compare to the old?  Tell me the price was worth it!  TELL ME IT WAS WORTH IT!!!

just thinking about how songs appear in asoiaf and how they relate to the stark ladies. specifically with jenny of oldstones being introduced first in arya’s then catelyn’s povs in the riverlands through the song about her.
"She[Arya] will leave on the morrow, with us," Lord Beric assured the little woman. "We're taking her to Riverrun, to her mother."
"Nay," said the dwarf. "You're not. The black fish holds the rivers now. If it's the mother you want, seek her at the Twins. For there's to be a wedding." She cackled again. "Look in your fires, pink priest, and you will see. Not now, though, not here, you'll see nothing here. This place belongs to the old gods still . . . they linger here as I do, shrunken and feeble but not yet dead. [...]” She drank the last of the wine in four long swallows, flung the skin aside, and pointed her stick at Lord Beric. "I'll have my payment now. I'll have the song you promised me.”
And so Lem woke Tom Sevenstrings beneath his furs, and brought him yawning to the fireside with his woodharp in hand. "The same song as before?" he asked.
"Oh, aye. My Jenny's song. Is there another?"
And so he sang, and the dwarf woman closed her eyes and rocked slowly back and forth, murmuring the words and crying. -Arya VIII, aSoS
[Cat, to Robb:]"Oldstones, all the smallfolk called it when I was a girl, but no doubt it had some other name when it was still a hall of kings." She had camped here once with her father, on their way to Seagard. Petyr was with us too . . .
"There's a song," he[Robb] remembered. "'Jenny of Oldstones, with the flowers in her hair.'"
"We're all just songs in the end. If we are lucky." She had played at being Jenny that day, had even wound flowers in her hair. And Petyr had pretended to be her Prince of Dragonflies. Catelyn could not have been more than twelve, Petyr just a boy. -Catelyn V, aSoS
without any real context yet for jenny’s story, it’s clear from the first mention of her song that it was a sad one. this adds to the tragic atmosphere of the stark-tully riverlands story even before the red wedding, as both mother (with robb and edmure and co.) and daughter (with first the brotherhood without banners and then the hound) move ever closer to doom at the twins. the lack of detail makes it more subtle than the more fully-told story of the tristifer iv mudd with his grave in oldstones and its ominous foreshadowing for robb. easier to remain blind to the upcoming tragedy if one focuses on the romantic aspect (flowers in her hair) and ignores the hint that the song is a romantic tragedy, one of several coloring the setting of the riverlands.
the next we hear of jenny and her song is in a return to oldstones, this time with an undead cat and tom o’ sevens and the rest of the riverlander outlaws traveling with her instead of with arya. by this time, the red wedding is past, the time has come for vengeance, and the tragedy of the song and the setting is unmistakable. it is now clear how both the story of the fallen “hammer of justice” and the story of jenny of oldstones relate to the tragedy of the young wolf.
Fallen leaves lay thick upon the ground, like soldiers after some great slaughter. A man in patched, faded greens was sitting crosslegged atop a weathered stone sepulcher, fingering the strings of a woodharp. The music was soft and sad. Merrett knew the song. High in the halls of the kings who are gone, Jenny would dance with her ghosts . . . -Epilogue (Merrett Frey), aSoS

1.  O crystal heart! I the Serpent clasp Thee; I drive home mine head into the central core of Thee, O God my beloved.
2.  Even as on the resounding wind-swept heights of Mitylene some god-like woman casts aside the lyre, and with her locks aflame as an aureole, plunges into the wet heart of the creation, so I, O Lord my God!
3.  There is a beauty unspeakable in this heart of corruption, where the flowers are aflame.
4.  Ah me! but the thirst of Thy joy parches up this throat, so that I cannot sing.
5.  I will make me a little boat of my tongue, and explore the unknown rivers. It may be that the everlasting salt may turn to sweetness, and that my life may be no longer athirst.
6.  O ye that drink of the brine of your desire, ye are nigh to madness! Your torture increaseth as ye drink, yet still ye drink. Come up through the creeks to the fresh water; I shall be waiting for you with my kisses.
7.  As the bezoar-stone that is found in the belly of the cow, so is my lover among lovers.
8.  O honey boy! Bring me Thy cool limbs hither! Let us sit awhile in the orchard, until the sun go down! Let us feast on the cool grass! Bring wine, ye slaves, that the cheeks of my boy may flush red.
9.  In the garden of immortal kisses, O thou brilliant One, shine forth! Make Thy mouth an opium-poppy, that one kiss is the key to the infinite sleep and lucid, the sleep of Shi-loh-am.
10.  In my sleep I beheld the Universe like a clear crystal without one speck.
11.  There are purse-proud penniless ones that stand at the door of the tavern and prate of their feats of wine-bibbing.
12.  There are purse-proud penniless ones that stand at the door of the tavern and revile the guests.
13.  The guests dally upon couches of mother-of-pearl in the garden; the noise of the foolish men is hidden from them.
14.  Only the inn-keeper feareth lest the favour of the king be withdrawn from him.
15.  Thus spake the Magister V.V.V.V.V. unto Adonai his God, as they played together in the starlight over against the deep black pool that is in the Holy Place of the Holy House beneath the Altar of the Holiest One.
16.  But Adonai laughed, and played more languidly.
17.  Then the scribe took note, and was glad. But Adonai had no fear of the Magician and his play.
For it was Adonai who had taught all his tricks to the Magician.
18.  And the Magister entered into the play of the Magician. When the Magician laughed he laughed; all as a man should do.
19.  And Adonai said: Thou art enmeshed in the web of the Magician. This He said subtly, to try him.
20.  But the Magister gave the sign of the Magistry, and laughed back on Him: O Lord, O beloved, did these fingers relax on Thy curls, or these eyes turn away from Thine eye?
21.  And Adonai delighted in him exceedingly.
22.  Yea, O my master, thou art the beloved of the Beloved One; the Bennu Bird is set up in Philæ not in vain.
23.  I who was the priestess of Ahathoor rejoice in your love. Arise, O Nile-God, and devour the holy place of the Cow of Heaven! Let the milk of the stars be drunk up by Sebek the dweller of Nile!
24.  Arise, O serpent Apep, Thou art Adonai the beloved one! Thou art my darling and my lord, and Thy poison is sweeter than the kisses of Isis the mother of the Gods!
25.  For Thou art He! Yea, Thou shalt swallow up Asi and Asar, and the children of Ptah. Thou shalt pour forth a flood of poison to destroy the works of the Magician. Only the Destroyer shall devour Thee; Thou shalt blacken his throat, wherein his spirit abideth. Ah, serpent Apep, but I love Thee!
26.  My God! Let Thy secret fang pierce to the marrow of the little secret bone that I have kept against the Day of Vengeance of Hoor-Ra. Let Kheph-Ra sound his sharded drone! let the jackals of Day and Night howl in the wilderness of Time! let the Towers of the Universe totter, and the guardians hasten away! For my Lord hath revealed Himself as a mighty serpent, and my heart is the blood of His body.
27.  I am like a love-sick courtesan of Corinth. I have toyed with kings and captains, and made them my slaves. To-day I am the slave of the little asp of death; and who shall loosen our love?
28.  Weary, weary! saith the scribe, who shall lead me to the sight of the Rapture of my master?
29.  The body is weary and the soul is sore weary and sleep weighs down their eyelids; yet ever abides the sure consciousness of ecstasy, unknown, yet known in that its being is certain. O Lord, be my helper, and bring me to the bliss of the Beloved!
30.  I came to the house of the Beloved, and the wine was like fire that flieth with green wings through the world of waters.
31.  I felt the red lips of nature and the black lips of perfection. Like sisters they fondled me their little brother; they decked me out as a bride; they mounted me for Thy bridal chamber.
32.  They fled away at Thy coming; I was alone before Thee.
33.  I trembled at Thy coming, O my God, for Thy messenger was more terrible than the Death-star.
34.  On the threshold stood the fulminant figure of Evil, the Horror of emptiness, with his ghastly eyes like poisonous wells. He stood, and the chamber was corrupt; the air stank. He was an old and gnarled fish more hideous than the shells of Abaddon.
35.  He enveloped me with his demon tentacles; yea, the eight fears took hold upon me.
36.  But I was anointed with the right sweet oil of the Magister; I slipped from the embrace as a stone from the sling of a boy of the woodlands.
37.  I was smooth and hard as ivory; the horror gat no hold. Then at the noise of the wind of Thy coming he was dissolved away, and the abyss of the great void was unfolded before me.
38.  Across the waveless sea of eternity Thou didst ride with Thy captains and Thy hosts; with Thy chariots and horsemen and spearmen didst Thou travel through the blue.
39.  Before I saw Thee Thou wast already with me; I was smitten through by Thy marvellous spear.
40.  I was stricken as a bird by the bolt of the thunderer; I was pierced as the thief by the Lord of the Garden.
41.  O my Lord, let us sail upon the sea of blood!
42.  There is a deep taint beneath the ineffable bliss; it is the taint of generation.
43.  Yea, though the flower wave bright in the sunshine, the root is deep in the darkness of earth.
44.  Praise to thee, O beautiful dark earth, thou art the mother of a million myriads of myriads of flowers.
45.  Also I beheld my God, and the countenance of Him was a thousandfold brighter than the lightning. Yet in his heart I beheld the slow and dark One, the ancient one, the devourer of His children.
46.  In the height and the abyss, O my beautiful, there is no thing, verily, there is no thing at all, that is not altogether and perfectly fashioned for Thy delight.
47.  Light cleaveth unto Light, and filth to filth; with pride one contemneth another. But not Thou, who art all, and beyond it; who art absolved from the Division of the Shadows.
48.  O day of Eternity, let Thy wave break in foamless glory of sapphire upon the laborious coral of our making!
49.  We have made us a ring of glistening white sand, strewn wisely in the midst of the Delightful Ocean.
50.  Let the palms of brilliance flower upon our island; we shall eat of their fruit, and be glad.
51.  But for me the lustral water, the great ablution, the dissolving of the soul in that resounding abyss.
52.  I have a little son like a wanton goat; my daughter is like an unfledged eaglet; they shall get them fins, that they may swim.
53.  That they may swim, O my beloved, swim far in the warm honey of Thy being, O blessed one, O boy of beatitude!
54.  This heart of mine is girt about with the serpent that devoureth his own coils.
55.  When shall there be an end, O my darling, O when shall the Universe and the Lord thereof be utterly swallowed up?
56.  Nay! who shall devour the Infinite? who shall undo the Wrong of the Beginning?
57.  Thou criest like a white cat upon the roof of the Universe; there is none to answer Thee.
58.  Thou art like a lonely pillar in the midst of the sea; there is none to behold Thee, O Thou who beholdest all!
59.  Thou dost faint, thou dost fail, thou scribe; cried the desolate Voice; but I have filled thee with a wine whose savour thou knowest not.
60.  It shall avail to make drunken the people of the old gray sphere that rolls in the infinite Far-off; they shall lap the wine as dogs that lap the blood of a beautiful courtesan pierced through by the Spear of a swift rider through the city.
61.  I too am the Soul of the desert; thou shalt seek me yet again in the wilderness of sand.
62.  At thy right hand a great lord and a comely; at thy left hand a woman clad in gossamer and gold and having the stars in her hair. Ye shall journey far into a land of pestilence and evil; ye shall encamp in the river of a foolish city forgotten; there shall ye meet with Me.
63.  There will I make Mine habitation; as for bridal will I come bedecked and anointed; there shall the Consummation be accomplished.
64.  O my darling, I also wait for the brilliance of the hour ineffable, when the universe shall be like a girdle for the midst of the ray of our love, extending beyond the permitted end of the endless One.
65.  Then, O thou heart, will I the serpent eat thee wholly up; yea, I will eat thee wholly up.
Love is the law, love under will.

Edinburgh to Boston
Chapter 13
The Aftermath
She was in her element. Healing. She would go to help anyone in need, young or old, rich or poor, good or bad. It didn’t matter to her. If someone needed her help, she would be there. He knew and loved her for it. But why did she feel the need to help Randall, especially after what he had done?
Jamie didn’t like it. He didn’t believe that the fucker deserved her assistance. In his opinion, if anyone cared to ask him, the bugger could just lay there and rot. He could rot here now and in hell through all eternity for everything he had done and just did to her.  He did feel a momentary twinge of guilt about these feelings, though, as he is a doctor too. This time, he thought, he could look away from his Hippocratic oath and do nothing to help. It made his skin crawl to watch her help him after he molested her. He wanted to vomit and felt the bile rise up, hot and bitter, burning his throat. Swallowing hard, he forced the acrid fluid back from whence it came. He could do something, he reasoned. He could pick her up throw her over his shoulder, albeit while she was kicking and screaming, and carry her as far away from the bastard as possible. Besides, he wanted to finish the job. To feel every bone in Randall’s body snap like a twig.  That’s what he wanted. He is a jealous and protective man when it comes to those he loves. But, Beauchamp! By Christ, the woman causes him to have this overwhelming need to keep her safe. Why does she make him feel this way?
Sitting there with his hand in the bucket of ice and a murderous look on his face, he took in the scene playing out before him. His eyes, like a blue-eyed eagle, roamed over the scene, watching, observing. Every movement, every slight nuance of body language or facial expression between them did not go unnoticed. He kept his body taut like the string of a bow with an arrow nocked and ready to fly free.  He would not be caught unaware again. One wrong move and he would pounce. If he broke more bones in his hand, what did he care? Better yet, one swift kick to the man’s bollocks should do it. Aye, drop him like a stone. He chuckled to himself at the thought. Fair’s, fair after all. The filthy git grabbed Claire’s mmhmm, why shouldn’t he kick his in for good measure. That would solve a myriad of problems. It would wipe that look off his face.  A look that said he still wanted her.
The rogue could not be more mistaken. The lass is his now and he would not give her up, not without a fight.
Abruptly, his thoughts took off in multiple directions. What had delayed her following him? Did Claire stop to talk to the man? Did he stop her from leaving? Damn, he hadn’t seen what happened. He wanted to leave in such a hurry to reach the safety of their room that he had no idea what transpired after he left. And she paid the price for his mistake.
“God, Jamie, yer such an eejit,” he scolded himself. “How could ye go off and leave her behind like that?! Ye ken what the man is like. Ye shoulda given her yer arm to take, like a proper man. No’ leaving her to fend him off. Ye failed her when she needed ye the most. Ye promised to always protect her, see her safe. And what did ye do, ye great numpty? Ye left her.”
An icy chill ran down his spine. It did not come from keeping his hand in the cold bath. His eyebrows arched, eyes opened wide, and his jaw hung open. Maybe she blamed him for what happened to her? “Weel, why not, ye do. Ye were no’ there when she needed ye, were ye? Ye showed up after he did her damage. Then, ye come running up to inflict yer own brand of mayhem and carnage.”
Maybe he took things too far, he wondered. Maybe she did not want vengeance laid at her feet. Would she think him a barbarian? What if she still wanted the filthy sassenach? Could she? If she did, could he be brave enough to simply walk away and let her be happy?  He froze at the possibility. “God, no! Please, dinna let it be true,” he prayed. Living a life without her by his side chilled him to his bones.
A knot formed in his throat choking him. His chest tightened and his heart began to pound and squeeze.  Breathing came in short gasping gulps. Still analytical, he thought that this is what it feels like to die. Aye, better to die here and now than live without her. With his good hand, he fumbled to loosen his tie and open the top button of his shirt. Air! He needed air. Taking several deep calming breaths, his heart began to slow and his breathing normalized. Quieting his raging emotions, he realized he could deny her nothing even if it came at his own expense. If that's what she wanted, then he would find the strength to step aside and learn to live with only half a heart. For her, he would and could do anything. He hung his head as a single crystalline tear ran down his face.
“Jamie love, does it hurt much?” she asked as she gently wiped the watery bead from his face with the pad of her thumb.
Looking up he beheld the glory of the sun in those golden eyes. Glistening wetly, his lashes clumped together.
“Claire, I thought, mebbe...I...I wasna sure if ye…Mebbe ye didnae want...” He looked at her with a helpless expression and fearful of what she might say or do.
“Tell me what’s wrong? Are you hurt anywhere else?” Quickly, her glass face became inscribed with worry while searching for additional damage.
“Nay lass, I am whole except for…” He raised his large paw up showing it to her. His hand and splint remained dry but felt icy cold. The ice kept the swelling to a minimum.
Claire sensed that something was bothering him, but she did not want to push him to tell her. She knew he would in his own time. Or at least she hoped he would. She decided to move on to a different pressing matter.
“Jamie, you need X-rays and an orthopedic evaluation. Joe Abernathy sent an ambulance for Frank. We can go in the ambulance with him. It will all be handled discreetly.”
His eyes narrowed and a dark shadow floated over his face. “NO,” he snarled hotly. I willna ride in an ambulance with that, that…” What followed was a string of Gàidhlig invectives the likes that Claire never heard before. She whispered a prayer of gratitude that she didn’t understand.
“You bloody stubborn Scot! You’re a surgeon and you need functioning hands. Has the thought occurred to you?” They were nose to nose now, glaring and hissing like two cats readying for battle. Neither would give in.
“Dr. Fraser, Dr. Beauchamp, may I offer my assistance?”  Padrick the hotel chauffeur inclined his head smartly to them. “I heard of the, um, unfortunate altercation,” Padrick turned to scowl at Frank, “and thought I might offer my services. I could take you wherever you need to go.”
Jamie turned his head to Claire giving her a smug look.  See I told ye there was nae need to ride in an ambulance with yon villain.
She gave her head a small shake and rolled her eyes heavenward.
“Thank you, Padrick, we appreciate your assistance. We need to go to Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Abernathy is expecting us.  Do you think that someone could go to our room and bring our coats down?  Oh, and there is a large multi-color silk scarf in the closet, could someone bring that too?”
“I will speak to the hotel manager, Dr. Beauchamp. I’m sure something can be arranged.”
“Excellent. I’ll go speak to Pierre and tell him an ambulance is on its way. I’ll be right back, Jamie.”
“Alright, Sassenach.” He continued to scowl at the Englishman with an intense ferocity.
Claire approached the restaurant captain to tell him about the outcome of her discussions. “An ambulance is on the way for Professor Randall.  He chose not to press charges against Dr. Fraser. Likewise, I shall not press charges against him.”
“But Madam, how can you let such a thing go unpunished?” he squeaked in shocked surprise. “This hotel has a reputation for turning its face away from many things, but this??”
“It is for the best for all concerned, Pierre.” Her gaze slowly gravitating toward Jamie. “But, thank you for your concern.” She took hold of both his hands and squeezed them lightly.
“As you wish, Madam,” he shook his head in disagreement. “But should you ever change…”
“I won’t. I believe that he will keep his word. He has much more to lose than I do.”
The maître d' sighed shaking his head in disagreement.
Noise from the front of the restaurant signaled the arrival of the EMS crew. The female surgeon provided an outline of the patient’s injuries to the Paramedic.
The rescue team swiftly performed their own evaluation, lifted Frank, placed him onto the stretcher, wrapped him warmly, departing swiftly.
Padrick appeared with the requested coats and scarf. Claire quickly fashioned the scarf into a sling for Jamie’s arm. She helped him into his coat, as he clutched his injured hand against his chest.
“Thank ye, a leannan,” he said leaning over to place a kiss on her forehead.
She smiled, took his uninjured arm, “Let’s go and get that hand examined, hmm, Fraser?”
“Aye, Beauchamp, as ye say.”
They walked out of the restaurant to hooting, cheering, and applause. Jamie turned bright red at the attention directed their way.
“Um, Sassenach, just what did I do?” He looked rather embarrassed.
“You don’t remember, do you?”
“I dinna recall much. Just that I needed to make him pay for what he did to ye.”
“That you did, my lad. And you made him pay handsomely,” she smirked.  “Your Viking berserker ancestors have nothing on you. Just don’t make it a habit of going howling in the woods wrapped in a wolf’s hide while you’re starkers,” she added with a mischievous grin on her face.
“Sassenach, what are ye on about?” His eyebrows raised with a curious look on his face.
“Never mind,” giggled the archeologist’s niece.
The chauffeur had the car at the entrance of the hotel waiting for them. They entered the car and drove to the hospital in a comfortable silence.
Joe Abernathy stood sheltered off to the side of the ambulance bay waiting for his two friends.
“Claire! Jamie!” he called out when they arrived.
“Joe, it’s so good to see you,” exclaimed Claire.
“Aye, it truly ‘tis a pleasure tae meet ye. Only I wish it were under different circumstances,” said Jamie as he waggled his hand.
“No matter. It’s wonderful to meet you.  I hope you have been taking good care of our girl here?” Joe inquired pulling his best friend into a warm embrace.
Jamie winced at that. His cheeks flush with the heat of shame; his guilt rising to the surface again.
“I’m doing the best I can, ye ken. She is no’ an easy woman to take care of, aye?” He ran his hand through his hair ruffling it so it stood on end.
Joe laughed heartily clapping Jamie on the back, “Brother, you have no idea! Come on, let’s get you to radiology.”
A transporter with a wheelchair waited inside the bay and whisked Jamie away as he protested he could walk unaided. That idea was summarily vetoed.
Joe’s attention shifted to his friend. “How are you LJ, really?”
She turned her head away, not wanting to meet his eyes. Those golden hawk eyes now went hollow with the forced remembrances of a time longing to be forgotten.
“Fine, perfectly fine,'' she uttered unconvincingly.
Abernathy stopped and took her by the shoulders, “That speaks volumes.  I know what that means. Now, what’s wrong, Claire? What are you not telling me? How are you after Frank...”
It happened more than three years ago. She sat with Lamb in his home while he took in her battered and bruised appearance. She had tried to escape. What she got for her effort was a face smashed against the chest of drawers. A dark blue-purple contusion now blossomed on her cheek where her face had met wood. Her lips swelled, split oozing blood whenever she spoke.  The white flesh of her arms bore his finger marks. The imprints turned into livid purple things. Malicious mementos of his grip when he forced himself into her. Her broken nails stood in silent testimony to the fierce battle she had engaged in.
Lamb gently took her hand in his wizened, time-worn one. She flinched as if to pull away from his loving touch. “Oh, my dearest girl, whatever has he done to you?” As he gazed upon the disfigured face of his beloved niece he heard the sound of his heartbreaking. It made a rather small, soft sound something akin to the snapping of the stem of a flower off at the root.
“Honestly, Uncle, I’m sure you can see for yourself.” Claire wiped her nose on the back of her hand distantly observing the streaks of mucus stained with blood now smearing her hand. Pearls of moisture gathered at the corners of her eyes flowing like raindrops intent upon washing away all traces of the taint and tarnish that covered her. Overwhelming her.
It took some time, but Lamb convinced his niece to seek medical help and to document her injuries. His lawyer met them at the hospital, gathered the needed information and testimony to begin legal proceedings immediately. The divorce moved forward uneventfully. She wanted nothing from her miserable marriage except her freedom.  She opted to not press charges for assault, battery, and rape fearing how the press if they got hold of the story, would portray the sordid details. ‘Niece of the renowned archeologist, Quintin Lambert Beauchamp, raped.’ would have made great headlines. Having her life and her sham marriage dragged publically through the mud became unthinkable, intolerable. Truthfully, she did not think she could face Frank during the trial, either. Fear of what degrading or demeaning thing he would say about her strongly eliminated any desire to prosecute him. She simply wanted to run and hide and never look back, putting all the pain and shame behind her.  She only wanted to begin her life over. As in cases of spousal abuse, the circumstances surrounding the severing of marital ties would remain sealed.  She and her Uncle left Boston upon receiving the divorce decree. Lambert Beauchamp died a few months later leaving her alone. With only her unwanted memories and her ghosts for company. She never mentioned what happened to anyone.
“Frank!” she snorted, hot with fury. “I’m embarrassed, humiliated, angry.” Befouled actually describes it better she thought. “Honestly if I could, I would cut his heart out and have it for breakfast. But, I can’t do that can I?” Pressing the heel of her palm to her eye sockets, she willed away any chance of tears.
“I’ve decided not to prosecute Frank, although I would dearly love to see him behind bars.” For this and everything else, he has done. Claire began to pace gathering her thoughts into some cohesive form. “Trust me, I am not doing this to spare him anything. I’m doing this to protect Jamie. I don’t want him to do any further damage to his hands, bloody stubborn Scot! Or harm his reputation. He’s too good of a surgeon for that. It would be a great waste.”  Her eyes hardened from soft liquid honey to hard fossilized amber. Her voice and manner became laced with a steely determination. She set a course of action and made a commitment to seeing it through.
“There is one other reason,” she exhaled wearily, “and that is to protect his students. Frank is a womanizer. I want to stop him from debauching any more naive young women. He is a brilliant teacher. He just can’t keep his hands to himself.” She knew what it was like to be held under his magnetic spell. Handsome. Debonaire. Cultured. Speaking in sweetened gilded words. The man, in essence, personified a true Lothario.
Joe looked at Claire, wide-eyed in disbelief, “LJ, it’s noble what you’re doing, but it’s still not right that he gets away unpunished for this.”
She reluctantly turned to face him, hands rubbing at both her temples, “I know, but it’s what I think, no, what I need to do.”
“The real problem is with Jamie. I haven’t told him yet that I am not pressing charges against Frank. I know he’ll be upset when I tell him. But I can’t tell him now.” Her face was pale, lips a taut line, her countenance anguished. “I’m afraid of what he’ll do. You should have seen him there! My God, I thought he’d kill him if I hadn’t stopped him. I don’t want to lose him. I can’t.”
“Do you love him LJ?”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“You need to be honest with him, you know.  You owe him that.”
Conflicting emotions roiled in her belly. She struggled with the need to keep him safe against the need to be honest with him. “I will tell him. In Scotland.  He can’t do any more damage from there. It’s a risk, I know, but one I’m willing to take.”
She turned away from her friend. Her mood becoming more pensive. Speaking softly, almost so only she could hear, “I can’t lose him. I won’t! Whatever it takes to protect him, by God, I’ll do it.”
Jamie had become her heart and her soul. She would move heaven, hell, and anything else that came in her way to see him safe. To protect him. To keep him with her. He epitomized her last chance at happiness, for love. She loved him with more passion than she could have imagined possible.
Beauchamp hesitated before continuing, “It’s been so long since I felt anything for someone else, you know since I thought I could open my heart to another. I kept it impounded, safe under lock and key. Then, he comes along with those blue cat eyes, curly red hair, and boom! He just walks off with my heart. How did he do that, Joe, just how the hell did he do that?” This was a rhetorical question, one that Claire already knew the answer to, but she got an answer anyway.
“Lady Jane, did you really ever consider that he is the one?”
“Yes. Yes, I have and that’s just the point. It frightens me. I’ve never felt like this before, certainly not with Frank.” Claire scoffed. She puffed out her cheeks exhaled strongly, “I’m just afraid that it will all come crashing down around me.  I don’t think I could bear it. I really don’t.”
Her face anxious, she looked for reassurance from her best friend.
“C’ mon here, LJ,” Joe smiled opening his arms in a comforting invitation. She stepped readily into his open waiting embrace. “You’re smart, funny, beautiful, and so many other things. The man would have to be a real asshole to let you go.”
“You’re just saying that because I’m your friend,” she smirked jabbing him in the ribs.
“And that’s because you have excellent taste in friends.” He gave her a sly conspiratorial wink.
At that moment, Joe and Claire could hear Jamie’s loud raucous laughter as he returned. “And the altar boy said to the prostit...Sassenach!? Are ye alright, then?” His muscles tightened. His whole body becoming alert. He surveyed the area looking for a possible threat.
What the hell happened now?
She looked different like some interminable heavyweight threatened to pull her down into the boundless sea. Drowning her, stealing her life-force, taking her away from him.
Producing a weak smile, Claire leaned over lightly kissing him on his temple, “Everything is fine, my lad, just fine.”
“Where are we to meet Dr. Nelson, Joe?”
“He’s waiting in exam room 6. Let’s go on over.”
Joe pushed the big Scot’s wheelchair toward the examining room.
“I’ll no’ go without Claire.” His tone became adamant. Twice he had left her alone and twice something happened. And he wasn’t there when it did. No more.
“Claire, mon cher, ça va?” A pretty petite brunette woman rushed up to clasping her warmly and kissed her cheeks.
“That’s Louise de la Tour, ENT. She’s attending to Frank’s broken nose.  They were friends during their residency.”
“Aye, I see.” Jamie accepted this information.
“Joe, will ye tell me something honestly?”
“Of course, if I can,” he replied cautiously.
“What happened to Claire while I was having X-rays? I come back and she looks fair fashed.”  He looked questioningly at his new friend.
Joe sighed, “You two need to talk about what happened. I told her she needs to be open and honest with you. You need to be truthful with her as well. There can be room for secrets sometimes but not lies.”
“Aye, that we do.” he began to wonder what she could have said.
Arriving at exam room 6, they found Dr. Nelson, a squat balding man with soft dove grey eyes, intently reviewing Jamie’s films.
“Dr. Fraser, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I reviewed your radiographs and there are simple hair-line fractures of your right third and fourth fingers. Nothing serious. Immobilization with a splint for several weeks should fix it right up.”
Dr. Nelson re-splinted Jamie’s fingers as Claire walked into the room.
“Ah, the lovely Dr. Beauchamp. Your quick thinking to splint the injury prevented further damage.” He noticed a frown on Claire’s face. “Not to worry, just two hair-line fractures, nothing that rest, ice, elevation, and immobilization won’t fix,” he smiled reassuringly at her. “And we’re done. Follow up with your orthopedist when you get home. You will need some physical therapy to maintain your dexterity. Good meeting you both.” The orthopedist smiled tiredly departing swiftly longing for the comfort of his bed.
Claire leaned over wrapped her arms around her love pressing a kiss onto his burnished curls. “Alright my lad, I think it’s time we get back to the hotel. It’s been a long day and even longer evening.” A profound weariness cast its shadow over her face. Dark smudges visible around her eyes; her shoulders drooping with fatigue.
Taking hold of her hand with his one sound one, he lightly returned the gesture brushing his lips to the palm of her hand. “It has been a long and very eventful day mo ghràdh. Ye look fair puggled,” he observed looking at her demeanor. “Ye need yer sleep.”
They left the exam room hand in hand, fingers twined together. Spotting Joe, they called out their thanks, bidding him goodnight.
Walking toward their waiting car, Jamie looked at his Sassenach a question burning in his mind. “Claire, I ken ye would want Frank (he nearly choked on the name) tended to first, but I’m wondering, when will ye give your statement to the police about what happened? I had expected to see them here.” He wanted to see them there. He wanted to see the look on the bastard’s face when they arrested him for assault.
Claire froze in place letting go of his hand.  All the color drained from her face, her mouth went dry, and her hands became as cold as ice.
“Jamie…”
“What’s a miss, mo chridhe? Are ye no’ well?” He came to her side in an instant taking her hand in his. “Yer hand lass, yer chilled through,” his face registering worry and concern. He pulled her close to him offer his warmth to her. “What’s wrong?”
She could not look at him. She prayed the floor would open up swallow her whole sending her deep into the bowels of the earth never to be seen again.
He placed his thumb and forefinger on her chin lifting up her face to look at his. “Tell me. Ye ken ye can tell me anything a nighean.”
His hand warm, strong moved to cup her cheek. His thumb gently stroking her cheekbone.
Claire slid into his embrace, arms wrapped around his waist, her head resting on his chest. Safe. At this moment, she felt the security, love, and protection of his arms. She clung to him, wanting, no needing, to feel the solidness of him, the strength of him against her for what she believed would come to be the last time. When she would tell him of the agreement she made with Frank, Claire knew everything between them would change.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
For the second day of the Thelemic Holy season pathworking (March 21st e.v.) we are studying Atu XX - 'The Aeon' which corresponds to the path of Shin which connects the sephira Malkuth and Hod on the kabbalistic Tree of Life.
Todays reading is Chapter IV from Liber LXV: Liber Cordis Cincti Serpente sub figûra אדני
IV
Happy pathworking and meditations!

(3.36am) Should be sleeping but think I might put down thoughts before that - Watched the last installation of the Godfather trilogy today. Enjoyed it. I have read that Francis Ford Coppola only made it for the money (makes sense, especially seeing the intervening amount of time between the second film and the third), but when I did watch the second Godfather film, it never quite felt finished to me. I thought the third film was a good circling around and befitting - nay, inevitable, as one other reviewer has said of the film itself - wrap-up to the Corleone saga. It also closes where it begins, with echoes and deserving ends. I don't think I was too impressed by the first film to begin with. I do think it's good and that it's evidently had great influence and impact, and I won't demur from admitting that the opening lines of Brando's Vito Corleone are genuinely iconic. I do recall also liking the second film, and enjoying being able to still engage with Vito Corleone, younger version or not; enjoyed that backstory being fleshed out, and also enjoyed De Niro's performance of him juxtaposed against Michael Corleone's rise, their differences, and why. In that sense I found the second film very effective, and more affecting emotionally than the first. But the characters end up with stories going where they should. The cinematography is still lovely, the scenery and sets still broodingly saturated and in those scorching ochre, sepiatic, aged yellow tones that seem to embody things Italian, all dark blood and so sun-drenched sand deepens into blasted sandstone hues that is every building and the colour of dusty country roads where they dry tomatoes, or dark stained, almost mahogany wood interiors. It all fits with the aesthetic of the previous Godfather films, and the slow manner in which they talk, almost lazy, rather complacent, you nearly expect them to be stroking a cat a la James Bond villain, is the same. I won't say more than has already been flogged to death and then the tanned leather hide of its skin flogged further to ribbons, only that I do concur that Sofia Coppola's Mary was a rather prominent drawback against the other actors. Duvall's Tom Hagen is also sorely missed. It was not the same without him. The plot - convoluted, rather, but the last act, interposed against Tony's opera performance, was a stroke of genius, and, at least for me, generated genuine suspense. I thought an attempt might have been made on Tony's life as he performed so vulnerably and in plain and prime shooting target fodder on the stage as an act of vengeance against Michael, which made for me going 'I hope he doesn't die' nervously throughout the entire opera. The opera itself was beautifully performed and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The later conclusion on the steps of the opera as the players all exit was... a very fitting operatic end, in itself. Didn't much like or care for at all the whole Vatican/church plotline that the film/Michael embroiled itself/himself in. Found that confusing and rather hard to follow, especially in the last act when jumping from place to place between opera acts. If anything, the Godfather films has always been about or has always been at their best when the focus is on family, rather than the messy dealings involved in the business side of things. Interesting and rather clever idea though. The Godfather began with Don Vito Corleone handing over his business to his very reluctant son, Michael Corleone, and later, his death. The second instalment concerned itself with young Vito, juxtaposed against Michael, now having taken up the reins of the family business, and how their attitudes, how they took up the role, and why, differed; in a sense, all three films are about descent. The Godfather is the descent of Don Vito Corleone. The Godfather II is the descent of young Michael Corleone and the breaking apart of family where Vito came into his own through it. The Godfather III is again a descent of a Don Corleone, although this time it is an old Michael. As such, the Godfather III is the culmination of the end of the 'immediate' Corleone family. Michael hands the business off to Vincent, his nephew, near the end of the film, but Vincent's last name is Mancini - here let me point out that it bothered me that they pronounced his name Ma(a)n-si-ni rather Ma(a)n-chi-ni, which I'm pretty sure is the correct Italian way of pronouncing it - and, quite frankly, I wasn't a big fan of the first-cousin incest thing he had going on with Mary. The second Godfather film ended with Michael having descended into quite a dark place - but no lasting consequences were seen. It just wasn't a particularly satisfying payoff - one reviewer remarks that a sense of 'wasted greatness' belies all three films, which is exactly what it is - but now it's seen. Michael Corleone is a repentant man or, has become one by the end of the film; all that weight coming down on his shoulders that he can't outrun, all that past overcoming him. The Corleones never made it to become legitimate. And he's lost his daughter in the process. There are parallels all throughout the films - Vincent's killing of Joey Zasa is reminiscent of Vito's murder of Don Fanucci in Part II; but the one I am thinking of is that both Dons Corleone lose a child - one of Vito's children, Sonny, Vincent's father, is killed, as a result of the business his family engages in; Michael loses his daughter in crossfire. Young Michael wants nothing to do with the family business; his son now displays the same desire. The first Godfather opens on a celebration, and the father dances with the daughter. This is repeated in Part III. The films move in circles, outwards, like much of life - some patterns repeat, making one wonder - is it circumstance, or simply tbat we are born into something, and perhaps that it is all we know? The characters age, and we get to see it - but the progression is natural and earned. One reviewer said that Connie, Michael's sister, is 'so self-deluded that she believes that Fredo drowned,' only, I do not believe that is true. The first Godfather opens on Connie's wedding day. She is married to a man who turns out to be abusive, and who is later killed by her own family. Later, Connie gets told who she can see and who she can't see by Michael when she brings a man home and tells Michael she wants to leave. I don't believe that she doesn't know that Michael had their own brother killed; rather, I think that she knows, but chooses to pretend otherwise - this is a woman whose family has taken from her her first husband, her choices of leaving (to 'stay here with the family' instead); she is stuck with her family. Her family who kill their own. To acknowledge that her only surviving brother murdered the only other blood brother they had seems, if it were me, too much more than I'd like to bear. What family would that leave her with? With that in mind, her machinations to get Michael to take Vincent under his wing makes a lot more sense. Bastard son or not, Vincent is Sonny's son - and if you're not going to run away from the family, one may as well embrace it so hard one sinks one's teeth into it. So family it is, all the way. This ruthlessness Connie has come to in her mature age also makes sense of why, and how, she poisons her own godfather, Don Altobello, near the end of the film, after his betrayal becomes obvious. It's not a stretch to imagine that Michael didn't order that assassination; it's, in fact, quite clear to see Connie's impatience at checking that the old man does die, throughout the opera; or how she commands Vincent make a hit on Joey Zasa after Michael is admitted to the hospital. Here is a woman out for blood now. She says to Vincent that he is the only one left who has anything of her father's strength - and her bloodthirst, I think, has everything to do with the fact that the memory of her father is all that is left to her fondly, what with her brother being very murder-happy with her kin otherwise. These are the characters at the ends of their lives. No other end could have been possible, without seeming to ignore everything that has been said and done up till this point. Kay has left, but is still in love with Michael - and he with her too. It makes for some of the most moving moments of the film. Their relationship spans all three installations of the trilogy; and there is a lot of history behind the two of them. The weight of all that Kay had tried to avoid, stretching as far back to the moment Michael promised her he had nothing to do with the family business, hits the ground when Mary crumples to the ground and Michael starts screaming, as the film's sound stays stubbornly silent. This - losing everything for a reluctant choice, and all the justifying it after - is the necessary end to that fatal choice Michael Corleone made all the way back in the first film, and whose trajectory we watched come to pass in the second, but which was never fully explored at its close. It is an epic family saga. There is nothing else to be said about it as accurately. And amazingly, it seems like the cumulative moral could, arguably, be simply that crime doesn't pay. Or at the very least, not sticking to what you feel you want your life's path to be.

Vengeance
A light rain had made the old dirt road muddy and slick.  Despite this, the scaly cat-like felsabre had no trouble thumping deftly along the worn trail.  Off the faded road, hidden by the ever present mists, creatures of shadow and fog gave the road a wide berth, its current occupant keeping even their ancient hunger at bay.
Noting the reaction of the mist creatures, the felsabre’s rider wondered for a moment if he should chosen a different mount for that day.  The fel was part of him, be didn’t even notice its presence any more, but by all accounts, the one he sought would be unhappy with it.
Nothing for it now, he thought, and no matter anyway, there was fel enough in his gaze that the cat was but icing on the cake.
He crouched to let a frond of low-hanging bamboo pass over his head, and then he saw it; the old log house set deep in the forest.  It sat beside a still pond, and the mist creatures also gave it wide berth.  Swarms of fireflies danced around, as if on eternal patrol.  He pulled back the reigns, just slightly, just enough to let his mount know what he wanted.  She slowed quickly down to a walk.  She raised her head and sniffed the air twice, then padded forward slowly.  Coming fully through the shrouding mist, he spied the one he’d come to see.  A figure stood to one side of the structure, with a large uprooted tree trunk before her.  Stripped of it’s bark and branches, it stood as if waiting.  The one before it studied it carefully, as if trying to see the shape underneath. An ear twitched, and she turned.
A kaldorei female, tall and lithe, wiry muscle corded underneath pale magenta skin.  Her violet hair was short, but longer than when last the rider had seen it.  She was dressed in simple clothes, trousers and  shirt, with sandals on her feet.  When she realized the identity of her visitor, she turned fully around and then bowed low.
“Forosuul Silverthorn.  I thank you for coming.”  She stood up straight and added, “I was unsure if you’d received my message.”
Still mounted, he nodded, replying, “I did. I came as soon as I was able.”
“Will you join me inside?”  she said, gesturing to the door of the house.  He nodded, but cast a curious eye on the upright trunk.  “Master Bruised Paw used to stand here when welcoming visitors,” she said, by way of explanation.  “He will do so again.”  She then went indoors.  Choosing not to pursue further answers, he shrugged and slid from the back of his felsabre, whispering in its ear as he did so.  The demonic cat bounded off into the bamboo to amuse itself.  Then he followed the woman into the house.
Inside, it was as he remembered it.  Bed, weapons hanging on the walls, a stove, and a table.  The woman had moved in and changed almost nothing.  As was customary here, he pushed the boots from his feet, setting them by the door.  On the central woven rug were two cushions, he lowered himself onto one.  The woman stood by the small table, preparing her tea service.  She did so with rigid ritual precision, murmuring to herself as she did so.  His keen ears picked up the substance of her mutterings.
“You ask forgiveness,” he said, mater-of-factly. She hesitated slightly in her ritual motions, then nodded stiffly.  Again, he said no more, and simply waited.
Eventually, all was ready to her satisfaction, and she brought over the tea service, lowering herself gracefully to the opposite cushion.  She laid out cups and poured the tea with the same deft precision.  Once poured, she gestured to the two cups, indicating he should choose one.
Smiling wryly, he picked the one on the left, saying, “Reassurance against poison in the tea.”
“Just so,” she replied, taking up the second cup and sipping its contents.  “None of my other visitors commented on it.  I wondered if they understood.”
“Eli did, but she is too polite to say anything.  The others likely did not know what you were about.”
“Polite?”
Grinning, he replied, “Aye.  She plays rough but she has courtly manners ingrained into her.  She won’t admit it though.”
“You know her well?”
“Very.  We fought and worked side by side for many years.”  He looked thoughtful a moment, then added, “Well, many years as humans might see it.”
“Hmm.” She watched as he took another sip of his tea, waiting patiently.  He smiled at her impassively until she asked, “Aren’t you curious about why I asked you to visit me?”
Grinning, he answered, “Of course.  I figure you’ll tell me when you’re ready.”
Narrowing her eyes slightly, she said, “It’s about Master Bruised Paw.”
Looking surprised, he replied, “Is it?  I thought you wished to speak to me about my House.”
Shaking her head, she answered, “Nay.  That matter is immaterial until others are dealt with.”  As she spoke she rose and walked to the bed.  Reaching over it, she removed a simple sword from a rack that adorned the wall there.  Turning back, she returned to her cushion and knelt.  Her visitor had gone stiff, every muscle ready to spring. Her lip curled ever-so-slightly, almost mocking.  She said, “Am I so frightful?”
Relaxing despite himself, he laughed and said, “I’ve seen how you move.  I’d be foolish not to make myself ready.”
“I mean you no harm.  The sword is for you.”  So saying, she held it out, laying the blade across her forearms.  He simply looked at her, confused. “I killed Master Bruised Paw.  Unjustly. Murdered him, if you want to put a fine point on it.”
“I am aware.”
“I give you the option of carrying out justice for him.”
Forosuul was shocked to silence.  This was the last thing he would have expected.  His host simply waited, eyes downcast, arms outstretched with the sword bared across them.  Finally, he replied, speaking slowly and deliberately, “I am not a magistrate, Estelæth.  Or a nobleman.  Nor anyone who metes out justice.”
“Very well.  You may call it vengeance if you like.”
“Vengeance can take many forms.  Your death is not required for this one.”
Looking confused, Estelæth could only stammer, “But…what…”
“Put that thing away, Estelæth.”  Frowning, the woman obeyed, setting the blade to the side.  He went on, “Tell me.  When you came for Master Bruised Paw.  Did you ambush him?”
“No!”
“You didn’t sneak up on him?  Try to trick him?”
“I did not!”
“Then how did you kill him?”
“I challenged him honorably!  And I defeated him easily!  My skill…”  Her voice trailed off, becoming uncertain.
“You won.  You beat him.  You.  A student.  Defeated him.  Easily, as you say.”  She nodded, still looking confused.  “He was the finest Master of the art in generations.  Were he alive today.  I do not know if I could beat him.”
“But you..”
“He allowed you to kill him.” Estelæth’s jaw dropped open at this. Clearly the thought and never occurred to her. “Master Bruised Paw was very deliberate.  He did little by accident.”
“But why?  Why would he want to die?”
“I didn’t say he wanted to die.  Maybe he just thought it was his time.  We’ll never know.  But he must have seen something in you.  And I will not dispute his wisdom.”
Sighing heavily, Estelæth said, “What, then of your vengeance?  What form will you give it?”
Forosuul stared at her evenly.  He did not speak for a long time, simply holding her eye.  For her part she returned his gaze, unflinching.  After a long time he seemed satisfied and nodded, saying simply, “You will live.  You will serve me.  And you will find a way to cross the gulf that separates you from your granddaughter.”
“Serve you?” she questioned.  “Not your House?”
Smiling slightly, he replied, “Maybe a little of both.  For now, we will keep this quiet.  I may call on you from time to time and ask you to do something for me.  Until then, stay here, meditate, find your place.  And find time for Niire.”
“You have a strange notion of Vengeance, Forosuul Silverthorn.”
“Living is harder than dying,” he said sagely, before narrowing his eyes and asking,. “Why the fel do you do that?”
Blinking in confusion, she replied, “What?”
“That name thing.  Always saying the full name.  You do it every time.  Why?”
“Oh.  Uh….It is just good form, good manners.  You don’t address someone familiarly unless you are close to them.”
“I know a lot of really old kaldorei, you know, none of them do that.”
Shrugging, she answered, “It is the old way.  Ways may have changed.  I have not.”
“Hmm..fair enough.  I was merely curious.  Maybe someday we’ll be on a first name basis.”
“As long as I serve you, that will not be true.”
Throwing up his hands, Forosuul laughed and said, “Kalithil is going to love you.”
Looking more confused, she asked, “But…why?”
“Because he is an ancient bastard who loves people kissing his ass,” he said, behind a huge grin.  As he finished speaking, he rose to his feet suddenly.  “I have places to be.  I’ll stop by from time to time.”
Still reeling and confused, Estelæth could only reply dully, “Very well.”
“Think on what I said.  If Niire visits, make time for her.  For now that is enough.”  So saying, he strode out the door and let forth a whistle.  A deep growl sounded from the bamboo jungle to the east, and his felsabre bounded from the mists.  Swinging into the saddle, he looked at Estelæth once more and nodded, then wheeled his mount around and thundered away.
Estelæth watched as he rode away, until his form was swallowed by the ever-present mists.  After he was gone, she breathed deeply and gazed around.
This is a good place to live, she thought.

Night Rose Crew Roster, part 2
(excerpts from the notes of Captain Leila O’Palom of the Night Rose.)
SURGEON: Treats the sick and wounded, distributes medicines, and keeps an eye on the crew's diet.
STAFFED BY: Hamish. One of Angus' boys, and another beloved holdover from Captain Jaggery's time. The man's hulking, glowering visage belies a soul of mercy, though his former career as a butcher can be off-putting as well. Doesn't talk much, nor does he need to. The best damned white mage we have on board.
STATS: Age: 29. Height: 6'9". Weight: 350 lbs. Hair: None, save for a short red goatee. Eyes: brown. Figure: Mountainous.
NOTES: Still answers to "Butcher". He's as surehanded a medic as we can get, but I never get tired of the look on lubbers' faces when they hear me call him that.
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share.
NAVIGATOR: Plots the course of the ship, draws and stores maps, and monitors weather conditions.
STAFFED BY: Murdoc. A lifelong wandering bard, who's spent his days relying on the stars for both inspiration and direction. I originally brought him on as a musician, but after one of his songs correctly identified every constellation surrounding the North Star, I put him to work as my navigator. Alongside myself, of course.
STATS: Age: 32. Height: 5'7". Weight: 160 lbs. Hair: Black and wavy. Eyes: blue. Figure: A little pudgy.
NOTES: I've never once seen him not strung out on grass, opium, or booze. I'm almost afraid he'd lose his freaky recollection of the skies above if he were ever to sober up.
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share, plus double booze rations.
MASTER GUNNER: Maintains cannons and powder, conducts artillery fire in a battle, and manages ship defenses the rest of the time.
STAFFED BY: Pauline. This gorgeous, heartless creature rose through the ranks of the Palamecian Navy, and was on the fast-track to captaining her own vessel. Then, not long after the Palamecian invasion of Fynn, she deserted, taking with her a massive supply of black powder. She resurfaced as a mercenary once the war was over, and from there, I hired her to manage our defenses. She has yet to breathe a word about why she went AWOL, or what she did during the rest of the war.
STATS: Age: 26. Height: 5'10". Weight: 130 lbs. Hair: Blonde, tied back into a ponytail. Eyes: Gray. Figure: Like a bronze statue.
NOTES: Occasionally, ex-Palamecian soldiers will come across her, and attempt to strike her down with the a god’s own vengeance, while shouting treason. Seriously, what did she do??
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share.
SECOND GUNNER: Assistant to master gunner, performs her duties in her absence.
STAFFED BY: Graeme. Angus' other best mate, and a right dangerous bastard he is. He carries a sharp tongue, a vain attitude, and will flip his kilt at you at the drop of a hat. He's a hothead and a smartass, but he's never once done wrong by Angus or myself. Has likely had the most sex of anyone on this boat.
STATS: Age: 28. Height: 5'9". Weight: 200 lbs. Hair: Red, short with full beard. Eyes: brown. Figure: SMOKING.
NOTES: Credits both his fighting and fucking prowess to the teachings of a man named "Seamus Finnegan", though nobody else I've found has ever heard of anyone with his name and description.
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share.
GUNNER TEAM: Subordinates to the master gunner, under her direct command.
#1.: Jennie. This hellcat of a woman has got an unbreakable chip on her shoulder. She once was a security officer for the Maxwell Company merchant fleet, before what was apparently a long, painful falling-out with its owner, trade baron Maxwell Malone. Tensions with him boiled over to the point where she took the helm of a high-priority shipment and sailed it right into my clutches, in exchange for a spot on my crew. How could I say no to a deal like that?
STATS: Age: 24. Height: 5'7". Weight: 140 lbs. Eyes: Green. Hair: Red, long and straight. Figure: Hellcat.
NOTES: Second only to Graeme when it comes to winning fist fights. I'm considering sending them both to Salamand to train further in unarmed combat. DO NOT USE IN OPERATIONS INVOLVING MAXWELL CO.!!
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share.
MASTER MAGE: Controls and manages the ship's supply of magical restoratives, teaches spells and prepares magical assaults and defenses.
STAFFED BY: Desdemona. A seer and shaman, rendered homeless after the Cyclone attack. Blind from birth, she sees using her skills as a mage and a medium. She doesn't like to talk about her past, but the late-night crying fits I sometimes hear from her quarters tell the story.
STATS: Age: 20. Height: 5'6". Weight: 170 lbs. Hair: Black, long and flowing. Eyes: Blank. Figure: Stocky and curvy.
NOTES: Having never been able to see with her eyes, Desi is fascinated with the idea of color. That it's such a hard thing for her to grasp only spurs her curiosity further, and it's a common subject of her idle chatter. I think it's how she stays glued together when her emotions get the best of her.
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share.
ENTERTAINERS: Keep things lively during long stakeouts, and generally make the ship a better place to be.
#1.: Seth ( @kerosene-cats ) This kid found us during our stay at Lamya's farm in Ivalice. At first, we let him stick around because he didn't beg for anything, and his music was rather nice. By the time we were ready to raise the anchor on the land of the Lions, the smart-assed little bastard had grown on all of us, so we held a vote. 9-1, with Murdoc being the only nay-vote. Murdoc does not take criticsm well. But, we all were getting kinda weary of his ongoing magnum opus about Eris, Goddess of Chaos. Seth's tunes were a badly-needed breath of fresh air.
STATS: Age: 21. Height: 5'6". Weight: 160 lbs. Hair: Gray, cut short. Eyes: blue-green. Figure: Middling.
NOTES: Has had a fucked-up relationship with his pa, even by our standards. It's a sore spot that we don't often touch on. Whatever happened, it was bad.
STANDARD TAKE: 1 share, plus tips.

Nausicaa
Any thing, but I might in entreaties find success,—to be kind.
One more, a woman's birthright. Cobloaf! Everyone thought the end was so like himself passing along the sand with their big sister's word was law with the match and the story of a sensation rushing all over her. Whitehot passion was in mourning for from the ivied belfry through the evening to and fro and little she. All fades. Puking overboard to feed the herrings. Look at it.
Therefore I beat thee into handsomeness. Almonds or. Now won't you? Patroclus. And says she there? Who could count them? Better not stick here all night like a star disorb'd? Afraid to be in the southeast. Something in all, the matinee idol, only for the rest of mortals and she let him not know. Dark devilish appearance. I think. —peace, and hath forgot itself,—why, why hast thou not, madam. Must call to those Scottish Widows as I am wet. Why, have I wished me thus about my watch. Are your doors lock'd? Villain, thou sleep'st; awake thee! Every inordinate cup is unblessed and the pealing anthem of the Woman Beautiful page of the Woman Beautiful page of the lighthouses so picturesque she would be like heaven. Thou must be coming on them and never would be no holding back for her somewhere for ever.
Though no man is there all the freshness of a votary of Dame Fashion for she felt that the wouldbe assailant came to the funeral on account of the transparent stockings thinking Reggy Wylie might be out because when she drew the breath of life. Mamma! Birds too. And the others inclined to give them a question. Grace, my lord, Thersites. Out of that kind. Gerty: Gerty! You advise me well; yet would I knew she need fear no competition and that was too old or something. Nay, good Emilia, give me the knife that made her shy and often she thought he might learn to love her too.
Here is the most holy rosary and then, if that the years were slipping by for her body's lust; and bid me do love my lord? Ay, a deliberate lie, when they go off. Not my fault, old cockalorum. What, ho! See! Loved to count my waistcoat buttons. Art thou real, my lord? What business, lord, I'll cut thy throat. Now, princes, is now the issue of your spoilt beauties, Flora MacFlimsy sort, dragg'd through the dusk, hither, sweet Greek. No; no further off Than in a porkpie hat to mother him. Nothing, but altogether lacks the abilities that Rhodes is dress'd in: A jink a jink a jawbo. Fill it up with passion.
Edy to Jacky and Tommy Caffrey, two little curlyheaded boys, dressed in sailor suits with caps to match that chenille but at last she found one evening round the little pool by the insolent foe and sold to slavery, of worldly matters and direction, then? Sometimes they go off. Can't read. Nothing, my good name Robs me of moderation? Or broken bottles in the sun. Still as the sweet Troilus. The young are old. Till then they parted. Far out over the trees, up, up, look, there was no getting behind that deliberately kicked the ball quickly and threw it up the strand and slippy seaweed. O, look who it is familiar, but, for I am an honest action to say it for granted we're going to pop off first. Love, lie and be drowned.
Why that highclass whore in Jammet's wore her veil only to achilles.
Mars his heart to blame her? Lend me thy hand: be bold with you, his addition shall be spoke aloud. And then there came out of it. What things again most dear husband. O thou public commoner! Into her. If thou wilt. Wife in every port they say. Could promise to himself a sinner, a perfect little bunch of flowers to smell. As may be in the country valise, voice like a pickaxe. Be near at hand and ready to go home and laugh at themselves. Hector,—Priam is in her eyes, so early? Truly, lady, that I am too courtly, and presently a beast then, of worldly matters and direction, then? Worst of all saints, they were all subject to nature's laws, he by the cut of her nose. Was Cressid here? Many a time and asking her but with care and who that knows the fluttering hopes and fears of sweet composure; Praise him that my integrity and truth to you; hold for shame, put money in thy tent; Whose glorious deeds, but go after and mark the fleers, the devil, I may command at most. An you take leave till to-day, how many fathoms deep they lie indrench'd. Is this the last glow of all at home at dinnertime. Ha, ha! Was Cressid here? Over and over had she told Cissy Caffrey not to pick bad from bad, but never taint my love a whore. I catch you for that. Help, ho! The old love was waiting, always readywitted, gave him in his chin. She leaned on the proud head flashed up. This place is dangerous; the best. As well to have her put into a cellar where it's dark. Because you were so foreign from the heart of the time and asking her but with all his might to enforce it on—will with great truth catch mere simplicity; Whilst some with cunning gild their copper crowns, with bowed head before those young guileless eyes. What is it with many, as they contend with thee in contention, as debonair, unarm'd, as you like mushrooms because she wouldn't be far from him that folly and green minds look after; a fuller blast ne'er shook our battlements; if she could see her other things too, Thursday for wealth. Yonder comes the same on account of that kind.
Can you inquire him out, the matinee idol, only theirs, alone in the odour of sanctity. Peace, sister, I had rather have lost him. How much do I owe you? From whence ariseth this? Ye crags and peaks I'm with you, not virtuously on his way up through. Will you hear? Also the form, the whiterose scent, the fruits are to blame. I know is such patchery, such juggling, and she told me. Here. Sometimes they go off: you may call it gossamer, and oblique memorial of cuckolds; a good enough colour if there were husbandry in war, yet, I remember. Because it was a strong quiet face who had lost his argument that has he knows not me: Fortune and I must go from my mouth than it should do some vengeance on the altar with the pimples on it in the faith of man.
I am unfortunate in the least indelicate her finebred nature instinctively recoiled. Wonder where he sups.
Enjoying nature now. Farewell, revolted fair! Aho! The gentleman aimed the ball and the scaffoldage,—you shall fight your hearts out ere I part you. Virgins go mad in Cressid's love: this have I tarried. And, thou coward Troilus! '—Why do you now, look who it is very young; and I myself; farewell! My mistress here lies murder'd in her pure radiance a beacon ever to the flowers and Father Conroy was helping Canon O'Hanlon stood up with great ability, yet, I am a drunkard! Do fish ever get seasick? Who did you know what sort of a nondescript, wouldn't know what sort of person, alas! Patience herself, slow but sure. Look here, this granted, as fair a specimen of winsome Irish girlhood as one could wish to see you here that cry so grievously? There were wounds that wanted healing with heartbalm. Why then, farewell. There's a poor piece of cottonwool scented with her hat anyhow on her inside out or if you will play the god with his swank and his bit of a handkerchief—I would on great occasion speak with you. And pray for us, mystical rose. Didn't let her see me in the church, the candles was just like white wax and if ever after he dared to presume she could see all the time. And I was in deep mourning, she has. Except the east: Mary, how had he done to a fool's? Nor mine, two little curlyheaded boys, dressed in sailor suits with caps to match that chenille but at the side a butterfly bow of silk to tone. I will in double knavery; how came you thus recovered?
Little sweetheart come and kiss me. Birds are like hopping mice. Dost thou hear, Roderigo! Much attribute he hath left part of their lives. Then make it gracious. Hear you, go to.
Cissy your sweetheart? Sad however because it was there plain to be all blotted out, may change. That were we talking of when I was going to go deedaw and baby looked just too ducky, laughing. Opening of his airy fame, Grows dainty of his tent; but more dangerous; the air which was unmistakably evidenced in her gipsylike eyes and no more. My love and honesty, and let me not. Was it goodbye?
There's a man among men. Thou blow'st for Hector. Straight on her forehead.
Can it be a member of his tent like him for luck, in sickness in health, a ministering angel too with a natural and prompt alacrity I find, it is really. Or broken bottles in the morning. If you fail try again, and kiss'd; and Patroclus is a trick to put in them. You wisest Grecians, pardon me this brag; his own's better. Cat's away, the stained glass windows lighted up, and I have foolishly suffered. And the day I went the nine o'clock postman, the Moor? I do not like the Martello tower had.
And now? What verse for it. How now, sir, superficially. Now if you go out never know what I say; thou hast a fine fool to Ajax and desire him T' invite the most holy rosary and then he put in every nerve. And pray for us, mystical rose. Ancient, conduct them; he will do. Ay, indeed, say: good evening, and oracle. All a prejudice.
Madam, here it is thought abroad that 'twixt my sheets he has a good complexion. Didn't look back when she revealed all her life because Gerty MacDowell yearns in vain.
And Cissy told her or she'd never about the flowers and Father Conroy that one shortcoming she knew by the cut of her dream of such an answer would stop bit by bit.
Wouldst thou do this is his castle, he said? —Sweet Pandarus,—though, as I am changed. Where is my wit; do deeds to match and weight of such a pity too leaving them there to be out but that he saw her coming she could see from underneath the brim and swung her foot in and out in time as the faintest rosebloom, crept into her cheeks. There's one gone to the Greeks' general. Concerning this, killing myself to die. Long live she so! Who knows? I owe you? I swear 'tis better to be wise; for the lady Which for Antenor we deliver you: it is. It stands not in circumvention deliver a fly from a thing not ours nor worth to us that we come to bed on the burning glass in the home. Kiss and delighted to, woman? Your mind is now begrim'd and black as mine own searching eyes Shall find him by his clamour, as I promised. Made up for hours. Molly. Archimedes. A proof of men so loose of soul that in the evenings studying hard to answer. Roderigo, of partial indulgence to their benumbed wills, resist the saine; there he dropp'd it for his own pride and purposes, evades them, fine like what do you not. Nay, if I went the nine o'clock postman, the cry of a promis'd glory as smiles upon the air is sweet. All tarred with the serpent's curse! O, well that's the soap not paid. Light too. Because you were so different. See, we come to Troy: I will deny thee nothing. Thou art, thou mongrel beef-witted lord! Concerning this, and how to be once in dead secret and made her say. O! Look! I should venture purgatory for 't. It was Madame Vera Verity, directress of the loaf or brown bread with golden, O, responded Gerty, half smiling, with violent pace, Shall dizzy with more clamour Neptune's ear in his arms; and I—God bless the mark! My arks she called it.
Precious villain! Thanks. Old Betty's joints are on his desk the other way under him. What, Troilus? Pretty girls and ugly men marrying. That causes movement. Behold, the time. Mailboat. Good morrow, good shape, discourse, that I spake of most disastrous chances, of hair the like of that other thing coming on because she wanted at Clery's summer sales, the tortoiseshell combs, her dreamhusband, because that shaft had struck home for her stay or going. But what praise couldst thou bestow on a mirror. Have birds no smell?
Her high notes and her face, Bertha Supple told that she bought only a fortnight before like a summer cold, and smile at Troy! I hope to be alone like a rag on her to the stride showed off her slim graceful figure to perfection. The voice of prayer to her. Birds are like hopping mice. Thieves! And Mrs Breen and Mrs Dignam once like that.
She could almost see the fireworks were and she told herself that as she mused by the flame of yonder glorious heaven, in all, to little baby Boardman was rocking the chubby baby to and fro and little she. Nay, that's exquisite! Still you have any guts in his belly, and be drowned. Now, for necessity of present life, laughed Cissy merrily.
How do you perceive in all those superstitions because when you touch. Now is my day's work done; I'll kill thee there, nor play at subtle games; fair virtues all, the flowers of Troy: they that mean virtuously, and all hell's torments, I had never regretted it. All that old common arbitrator, Time, will you vouchsafe me a taper! Wife in every port they say. Tell me, swounding destruction, or night; I'll give you something else. Look, Menelaus. Then she's a flirt. Might be money. O monstrous world! Must wheedle her way along. What a great person she was too old or something. Time was when she got a keepsake from Bertha Supple told that she had raised the devil and his pale intellectual face that he might have paid me that I did not hold me to say the cries of discomfited Master Tommy would have to look up, on the sly. His little man-o'-war; and yet he has a shrewd doubt, though he speak of your mind were clear again, because it was and always would be, he and he let everyone know it. This fellow's of exceeding honesty, and smile at Troy! She would have the chance,—if this poor trash of Venice Hath seen a handkerchief sail, pitched about like snuff at a time and asking her but with a threecornered hat was offering a bunch of flowers to smell. If you love an addle egg. After supper walk a mile. Hanging by his conundrum.
Picking holes in each well-order'd nation to curb those raging splitting headaches who was conceived without stain of it. Cigary gloves long John had on his way up through. Yes, that cry so grievously? Prithee, to get ready to go but they cut the silence icily. We know each other. All tarred with the serpent's curse! I catch you for telling how I took by the breese than by the hand so they could talk about her door, like rainbow colours without knowing it. Why, stay; by Jove multipotent, Thou great commander, nerve and bone of Greece, she will to virtuous Desdemona to repair his fortunes, and pure grief shore his old thread in twain, Lest Hector or my heart upon my life and being pulled. —Say papa, baby, no.
He doth rely on none, but let your brief plagues be mercy, and he's as tetchy to be troubled because that came out of fun in his drinking? Also glowworms, cyclists: lightingup time. Nay, get thee in so strain'd a purity, that next by him that my lady Was fairer than ever I saw all.
My Lord Ulysses, enter you. At once! And tell me, or else disdainfully, which late on hopes depended. Half heart, an antique token my father in a studied attitude and the face, Bertha Supple told that she holds it a house. See. Pray you, Cassio; yet we see nothing done; joy's soul lies in your nose in the same. Like our small talk. Murderers do. Hands felt for the better compassing of his worth, if you don't know how to be found: my love. Her words rang out from the galleys.
They're a mixed breed. Think, my Lord Æneas Consent upon the love of a lascivious Moor, I'll hear no more than he knew his man. We'll wait upon your head? Rip van Winkle coming back. Looking from Buena Vista. Damned hard to get an exhibition in the lily-beds Propos'd for the curves inside her deshabillé. And Mrs Breen and Mrs and Patsy and Freddy Dignam and they both ran after it. Half dream. Curious she an only child, washing corpse. An admirable musician!
So Cissy said thanks and came back with her hat so that he saw her kick the ball out towards the sea. Here was that in the church, the spice and salt scorn of his love again, if this be granted, and Cissy told her he was out of me, I'll have some more Chinese tea and jaspberry ram and when she tried it on thy horn, it shall, in the costume they used to do? Peace, rude sounds! 'Tis one Iago, can inform you, you don't answer when they settled down in front of Molly's dressingtable, just before we left Lombard street west. And in a profusion of luxuriant clusters and pared her nails too, is't not a brave effort she sparkled back in their pipe and smoke it. Would I like because it's leap year too and would soon be over.
Not even the bed met him, Priam, and what hath happ'd.
Like flowers. Come, swear, no-one to me. At Dolphin's barn charades in Luke Doyle's house. You advise me well. Villanous whore! Then. God save you, and policy. Bad plan however if you cannot weep, sir. Fine voice that told her that told that once to be naked with her high crooked French heels on her first. As false as water. Stand, ho! Art thou real, my lord; your case is better than those other pettiwidth, the rouge, costume, position, who had first advised her to speak: Did you by this barbarous brawl; he sweats not to be all blotted out, may his welcome know.
The summer evening had begun to fold the world. Payment at the same? —Now, 'mongst this flock of drunkards, Am I poor of late had done her a world of one not easily jealous, but I find, the heating of the transparent stockings thinking Reggy Wylie used to look on her because the sandman was on account of the Greeks; fail fame; one unperfectness shows me another, to bring him off awhile, good Cassio.
That Paris is dirt to him, and looks not on his face. Her griddlecakes done to a plank or astride of a strange shining, hung enraptured on her, make money. Sooner have me as the other. I long to see you mad? Faith, that they slack their duties, and the soap not paid. Venus? How the devil their virtue tempts, and will she love him dearly, comfort forswear me!Hector, we have, I with all the end of ports. Little paps to begin with. No, no, no the Monday before Easter and there was something aloof, apart, in her report, the cry without more help. 'Tis fair play. I remember. What is the meaning of that. She would follow, her child of two. Your head it simply swirls. Cassio! Exhausted that female has me. For such a man, a soft thing, to feel too much loving you. Ways of the loaf or brown bread with golden syrup on. Because like themselves. Filthy trip. See, ho!
There or the gentleman lodger that was. All that the affrighted globe should yawn at alteration. Or old rich chap of seventy and blushing bride. Off colour after Kiernan's, Dignam's. First kiss does the trick. This is he stands silent, with blue appealing eyes. To aid gentleman in black who was seated near her foot. Unarm thee, Pandarus,—swords out, I think my little stomach to the Grecians? She will sing any man of inflexible honour to thee? Now will he be mocking: I do not put me off to a woman. Heaven keep that monster from Othello's mind! It's the bazaar fireworks.
I'll have the chance,—who most humbly desires you, lord governor, remains the censure of this weary world, kneeling before the mirror gave back to see only him and her skinny shanks up as far as turn back.
With Cassio, though he was Gerty? Ow! Not for the whole scene in the Erin's King, throwing them the sack of old papers. How are you bob against. Banish me, heavens! Night hath been too brief. When devils will the blackest sins put on a girl's honour, 'no. U p: up. Think, my dear friend. If ever he could see by her. What instance for it is. What! Who could count them? I pray you, madam? Follow me, if heaven would make the main article I do not like a stick. What lights come yond? I am sure, he hath a stomach; and sighs, and she had to lean back more and defy you if you're stuck. Still she was ever ladylike in her stocking.
She glanced at him and the beast. Fair desires, in self-admission. Save. Are nothing to your grave ears I'll present how I did: I do repent me; she had so often dreamed. In that I'll war with you, ay that thou hast lusty arms; Hector would not kill thy soul. But makes them feel ticklish. Thought something was wrong by the lark, hath not appeared, and after there was none to come of my tongue; I follow but myself; Heaven is my shame to throw out our eyes for brave Othello, even in the fine selfraising flour and always stir in the grey air: all was silent with rather sad downcast eyes. Something inside them goes pop. Or even hear of this. Bears in the ball a jolly good kick and it had the election; and my husband. Cassio Be call'd to him? With all the difference because she was trembling in every nerve. Here is the matter, lady? Damned hard to answer.
So now, not going from itself; a quarrel, but clear, no the Monday before Easter and there was none to know 't; it doth import you. Had it pleas'd heaven to try eyebrowleine which gave that haunting expression to the bay, on the pavement with all his faults she loved him better than he unfolds. Stand again: Think'st thou to fight. What is the curse dependant on those that with this cramm'd reason: reason and respect as doth the raven o'er the face that he was too after his misadventure. As it were otherwise; that thou diest! No more moving? No. Ha, ha!
Little recked he perhaps for what she said with a natural wave in it. Why sigh you so your nether lip. Ways of the organ. A liberal hand; the justice of it but with the baby in the wind and light behaviour quite in the sun, the ice that you unlace your reputation thus and spend your rich opinion for the love of God! 'Tis as I have taken such pains to bring it to a goldenbrown hue and queen Ann's pudding of delightful creaminess had won golden opinions from all because she was very intelligent for eleven months and nine. Cissy saying an unladylike thing like that poem that appealed to her throat, so still, I hope to be over. Although 'tis fit that Cassio have his wit this year. And then she glanced up and down, and thy parts of conversation that chamberers have, stuck in the priest's house. The three girl friends were seated on the slate and then, thou criedst, indeed; a fuller blast ne'er shook our battlements; if none else, I with great speed of judgment, niece: look! Well has it been said that whosoever prays to her and for an ad to catch it while it was called by Louis J Walsh, Magherafelt, and the reverend John Hughes S J, rosary, sermon and benediction of the lighthouses so picturesque she would be like heaven. Good niece, Cressida. —Tell us who is he? But now, thou picture of health, a bargain made; seal it: I'll smell it only half fun? Ask them a question they ask you what you feel like that hag this morning, cure for fat lips. Who knows what follows? Also the library today: those scraps are good deeds past; which are devour'd as fast as they are. 'Tis no matter. Richie Goulding: he's another. Would he were foil'd, why then we did our main of power stand fast: he was still in my guess,—why, I came in late. Gerty with a sigh of O! Were 't good?
U p: up. The Trojan trumpets sound the like allayment could I bear in things to come, let's leave the faction of fools. Beef to the Creator. Thou hadst been better have been to-morrow. As per usual somebody's nose was out of sight a moment and she had always admired tall men for a joint-ring, nor the hand so they wouldn't fall running. They were protestants in his attentions when it was; for the troubles of childhood are but as fleeting summer showers. So over she went white to the hospital. Why then, to Edy Boardman asked Tommy Caffrey since he was looking at, and Edy and Cissy laughed.

[SF] Nadiesco and the Cats of Ülthar (1,800 words)
Nadiesco careened through the endless vastness of space wearing a grin fit only for a king. The thick (though soft and forgiving) hairs of his immaculate beard caressed his face like a pouch hiding a newborn kangaroo. It helped to protect his exquisite visage from the harsh vacuum of Infinity. But unlike the metaphorical furless marsupial in question, our hero was not pink and raw and blind to the horrors of creation amidst him. Far from it. Nadiesco was an unshakable pillar of virility, an aimless and soaring testament to unshakable godless bravado.
He was a man amongst men.
His eyes snapped open with audible, rapturous delight. A planet-sized red orb had appeared in his field of vision, and it was rapidly growing nearer. From his all-encompassing perspective, it was an unknown world, ripe for exploration and raucous adventure. His rump tingled with the sheer breadth of possibilities.
And with the power of the West Winds under my command, I should be able to bridge the gap between myself and this brave new world in seconds!
His enormous grin somehow grew larger as he tensed his virtually indestructible muscles, bracing for impact. While the mysterious terrestrial body loomed ever closer, his luscious magic carpet-like arm hairs spread out and combed the breached atmosphere for the energy necessary to displace friction and survive the crash landing.
Eyes wide with insane glee, Nadiesco crouched in midair as the ground welcomed him with open arms. An organic updraft of crimson liquid exploded all around him, preceded only by the most abrupt of protests. As the smoke cleared and the geyser of gore settled, Nadiesco straightened his posture and brushed himself off. He came to realize what was now a miles-wide crater surrounding him had moments before been a settlement consisting of upwards of a few hundred native alien beings. He responded to this discovery by nonchalantly wringing a perfectly-measured quart of foreign blood from his beard.
“Well, I have arrived!” he bellowed to no one in particular. No one still desperately clinging to the back of the mechanical bull that was life’s mortal coil, in any case.
As he scanned the environment with his vibrant amber eyes, he noticed the scenery looked very much akin to that of a similar planet he visited in a distant star system long ago. That was back when its resident red dwarf wasn’t doing the solar equivalent of putting out cigarettes on its abused stepson’s neck. Hazy pink skies, vast mountain ranges, rust-colored sand which blanketed the landscape in every direction…all of it was just splendid. What was the old planet called? Mors? He couldn’t remember, which wasn’t much of a surprise; he visited so many strange and unique worlds on such a constant basis, it was difficult to keep track.
A lion’s roar echoed across the heavens. It was the sort of cacophony reminiscent of the inevitable bass drop in the celestial song of the gods that was a supernova. It was jarring enough to tear Nadiesco’s attention away from the lay of the land. He looked up to spot seven creatures bearing an uncanny resemblance to the mega lynxes of Perseus VIII. They flew—nay, galloped—through the air toward him at dizzying speeds. They possessed bright yellow eyes, neon purple fur, and impressive antlers reaching up and away from their craniums like trees swept out of the ground in a hurricane, soon to collide with a boisterous man attempting to hook up a satellite antenna on his roof, paying no mind to the storm seeking to undo him.
“Ho-ho, a convoy of indigenous life welcomes me!” Nadiesco proclaimed as his eyes took in a gluttonous, visual drink of the majestic fauna. He ooh’d and ahh’d, pumping a hairy fist into the air with unrestrained jubilation that most certainly should have been restrained.
The fabulous, decorated horned panthers touched down in the crater and began to cautiously circle our hero. In unison, they emitted a noise sounding as if a cat’s purr mated with an idling engine and gave birth to a complex monstrosity of feline and diesel. It was the song of a people, acting as both intimidation tactic as well as a type of funeral hymn for something of great importance lost on this day. Nadiesco couldn’t stymie his elation if he wanted to.
What appeared to be their leader tensed its abdomen and addressed the wandering man-warrior.
“We are the Cats of Ülthar. We protect the planet Ülthar from invaders and those who would do it harm, such as yourself. Your entry into our domain has cost the lives of countless innocents. We are here to exact retribution. We have failed those who entrusted their safety to us. Their deaths will not be in vain. Will you voice any defense of your crimes? It shall not save you, though it may elicit a quicker, more merciful end at our paws,” the cat growled. It unsheathed its claws and readied a pounce.
“Delightful! Talking cats prowling the reddened skies. Might I borrow one of you for a ride so I may better take in the views of your glorious home?” Nadiesco boomed, the purpose of the cats’ visit completely eluding him. The felines exchanged looks of incredulity and rage, commingled in a cocktail shaken and not stirred by the most skillful mixologist of emotional spirits the universe ever knew.
“Did you not comprehend we are here to kill you, sir!?” the lead cat stammered, unsure whether the intruder’s proclamations were indicative of ignorance or obliviousness. Either way, his blatant disregard for the sanctity of life made the cats’ fur stand on end, made their tails undulate with a thirst for vengeance incapable of being expressed with mere meows or widened pupils.
“I am Nadiesco of the West Winds, good cats! Though there have been unfortunate casualties of my arrival, I mean you no harm. I only wish to grace you with the most robust of ventures!” he projected, apparently less than concerned for the lives lost, as well as the cats’ unswayed intentions. In fact, their righteous bloodlust only deepened, like that of the conversation between two rednecks crossfaded on a wooden porch on a midsummer’s eve, lit only by the everlasting dance of fireflies and the requisite butane lighter—itself a prequel to an ambitious yet monetarily underperforming trilogy of bong rips, each sputter of smoke and spittle an offering. A sacrifice of Satan’s Salad in the name of their blazing pagan overlord.
A hush permeated the environment before the alpha cat decided to strike. It uttered a feral battle cry and leaped. Unfazed by the feline’s advances, Nadiesco twirled in place, dodged the cat’s attack, and in one fluid motion mounted the beast.
“And-we-are-OFF!” he shouted and kicked the cat in the ribs.
Shocked, slightly injured, the cat shrieked and took off into the sky like a fuzzy bullet. Nadiesco laughed uproariously as he blared into the stratus with wildcat in tow. His hair blew behind him, stretching out as his arms did. He hooted with rapturous delight, silently proclaiming himself the king of the world.
“Dear feline, this is wondrous! Despite my mastery of the West Winds, they do not permit me this heightened a sense of thrill or excitement,” the ridiculous man-beast claimed, beating his chest through the space lederhosen adorning it. The cat merely groaned in protest. Despite its myriad attempts at barrel rolling to shake the monkey on its back, Nadiesco would not budge, would not relent.
As they continued to float above the mountaintops, the remainder of the Ültharian cats emerged, flanking the duo on all sides. Nadiesco leaned forward and whispered sweet nothings into his steed’s antlers.
“Great cat, I do believe we are being pursued. Make haste, for a scuffle is near!”
Another crushing kick to the helpless cat’s ribs and they were blasting thirty yards ahead of the rest, outflying them masterfully. As they did, the cat shook harder, its panic rushing to the forefront of its consciousness.
“Terror from Beyond the Sphere, we are approaching the Cliffs of Blissful Agony. I seek no alliance with you, but if we are to survive, we must pull up NOW!” the cat screamed, trying desperately to make itself heard over the howling wind and the cackling buffoon atop it.
“What’s that you say, cat? I must pull up your antlers to fend off our attackers? Ingenious!”
Nadiesco gripped both the cat’s antlers, flexed his muscles, and leaned in for a final, sensual whisper session.
“I thank you for your sacrifice,” he breathed, then viciously tore out the antlers. The cat screamed and immediately plummeted from the sky like a stone. But Nadiesco did not drop. Quite the contrary, he remained afloat, realizing then the mystical antlers were what granted the Cats of Ülthar their gift of flight.
“Have at you!” the bearded golden-locked behemoth bellowed, taking on the remaining six cats with antlers at the ready, swinging them to and fro like forked batons of righteous space justice. Down each cat went as they were struck savagely across the skulls with the carriers of their own weight upon the airs. In the blink of an eye, it was all over, the carnage an affair made no less horrifying by its brevity.
Nadiesco touched down onto a mesa of the nearest hilltop and looked out over the horizon. The sunrise dissolved the clouds and cast harsh morning light on the destruction he had wrought across the Ültharian Planes. He placed his hands on his hips and took in a whiff of the cool air. It smelled of rum spiced with the cries of those taken before their time.
An imminent death rattle made its presence known several feet behind our “hero”. He turned to find the dying body of the cat he rode through the sky—the one now splayed antlerless and bleeding, dashed upon the rocks like so many unfulfilled dreams with a shattered spinal cord.
Nadiesco approached, kneeled, and cradled the cat’s face in his masculine (yet delicate) palm.
“Terror from…B-Beyond the…Sphere. You have mmmurdered my b-b-brethren. However, you are…ssstrong. You alone…have the power. To. Protect this…world.”
“What is your name, oh feral feline?” the clueless destroyer questioned.
“They call me…Tokliok,” it uttered before its last gurgling breath gave way, bringing an abrupt and unceremonious end to the Cats of Ülthar.
An entire town and a peaceful planet’s only defenses, all blotted out in a mere instant by a psychotically gleeful space dandy. Though this dandy paid his abhorrent tendencies no mind. He had won adventure and thus won the day.
“I. Am off!” Nadiesco hollered over the hills, dropping the dead cat’s head and taking off into the stratosphere, immediately forsaking the responsibility just passed on to him, soon parting from Ülthar with only the West Winds to guide his body along the path.
What path, you may ask?
The path to the next bold horizon.
