Meek's Cutoff (2011, dir. Kelly Reichardt) - review by Rookie-Critic

Meek's Cutoff paints a very bleak image of the Western frontier and continues Reichardt's tradition of films depicting people who are either metaphorically or physically stuck in life and showing the more melancholic-ally optimistic side of being in those situations, albeit this time around the situation is way more dire and the "optimism" is completely up to viewer interpretation. Set in the early days of the Oregon Trail, a group of Americans emigrating into the still foreign-owned Pacific Northwest find themselves lost after allowing their massively incapable and racist/sexist guide Stephen Meeks (played by an unrecognizable Bruce Greenwood) to lead them off the main path. Running low on food and water and after running into a relatively healthy-looking Native American man, they have to decide whether to kill him, or trust him to lead them to a water source before their time runs out.

Filmed in a very unconventional 4:3 fullscreen format, the closed-in frame of the film adds stark contrast to the many shots of the sprawling Western landscapes, making for an incredibly disquieting and unique form of claustrophobia. The film is acted exquisitely by the ensemble cast, with Greenwood, Michelle Williams, and especially Rod Rondeaux, who plays the Native American, acting as standouts. All of Rondeaux's lines are both spoken in a very rare (by today's standards) Native American language and completely unsubtitled, leaving his intentions and, by proxy, the fates of our travelers, up to interpretation. A magnificently slow burn that intrigues and haunts, this is an anti-Western worth seeking out and one that puts certain other modern Westerns to shame. The Power of the Dog, eat your heart out.

Also, for anyone interested, the Native American language that the character is speaking in the film is downriver Nez Perce, although some of the lines were delivered in Crow by Rondeaux, as he doesn't natively speak downriver Nez Perce and only about 3 people in the entire world did at the time of the film's production.

Still thinking about my TBR list and trying to narrow my next options

I went ahead and started picking up books from my TBR list so :

- I've just started Equal Rights and I already love it (Reader's note : Don't start the Discworld books with The Eighth Color, it's not as enticing)

- I've read To Be Taught, If Fortunate. This one's a very moving read. All the Chambers' stories -including this one- I've read show an incredible faith in humanity and love for the rest of the universe. I'm weak for this short but precise and imaginative piece of writing

- I've also indulged kid me and read The Giraffe, and the Pelly and Me. Reminescent of other Dahl's works, it was everything it promised to be

i made a reading list for 2023, but tbh, i really didn't check off most of it. to my surprise, i read a lot of fiction and i'm really grateful that 2023 exposed me to great stories (shout out to fairy tale, my first stephen king novel) in that spirit, i'd definitely like to read more fiction in 2024 to expand and broaden my perspectives b/c as we know, that's the true purpose of literature. so:
