every single time I learn more things about ancient or prehistoric people I wish I could reach through time and fucking hug them like, you're me, you're human, you had a favorite random trinket that you loved, neanderthals brought flowers for their dead, you guys had friends, and loved to have soup your mom made for you and served in that ceramic bowl I saw at the museum, you made household items shaped like silly little animals, I love you, you're me, we would have been friends, I want to cry

We went to the Neanderthal museum yesterday, which is also the place where they discovered the first Neanderthal, or at least recognized it as such anyway. It was such a beautiful exhibition and the sculptures felt so alive. It gave me Big Feels and made me feel so close to these humans that once excisted.

At The Museum Of Ratural Ratstory.
The Squeakerthals were an ancient Ratoose that coexisted with the Wooti many millennia ago. Their disappearance remains a mystery to this day although the dominant theory is that they were simply outcompeted by what became the modern Wootus. There is evidence however that at least in some cases they coexisted peacefully and even bred with the Wooti, but those who speak such blasphemy are soon silenced.

Some feel-good recent news:
Stone tools of Neanderthals were discovered in the Pindus mountains, particularly in the region of Samarina, Grevena. They date from 60,000 - 80,000 years ago. Mountain archaeology has not been very developed so far in Greece as archaeologists believed the human activity was centred in coastal areas and the lowlands. This discovery is an incentive for the development of that field of archaeology here as well.
The antiquities are returning to the Thessaloniki subway. Yesterday a massive fountain building was put back to the station. It dates from the 4th century. Another one will return on the next weekend. The road (decumanus maximus) has been returned already. The lighting planning has been given to the public.
Wind parks in Europe use more and more a Greek technology, aiming to prevent birds from falling on the wind turbines. The turbines have sensors which detect the approach of a bird and start producing noises that repel it. If the bird does not change its direction, the turbine stops moving.
There are talks between the government and the British Museum for the repatriation of Greek antiquities, intending to find some middle ground. Greek PM didn’t reveal details but the rumours are that it is discussed for a branch of the British Museum to open in Greece, where the antiquities will be transferred.
The ERTFLIX streaming platform published its viewership statistics. The platform has more than doubled the viewership of the public state TV channels. Only in November about 9,000,000 views were recorded (the Greek population is 10 mil). The platform improved significantly the viewership of the TV shows as most users would watch an episode several days or weeks after an episode aired on TV. To foreign followers, this might seem trivial, but the state channels have always been a) funded by the public and b) of a high quality but suffering from low viewership, so it is very pleasant that more and more people appreciate and enjoy what the state channels offer, especially since they contribute financially to it (with a slight tax, but still).
I have professed my love for ERTFLIX before and I just interrupted this post to go to the app again and I stumbled over a short stop-motion animated series teaching the kids about significant exhibits in Greek museums???

Isnajzankajznanan this is Emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus and my Byzantine-phile ass is losing it now
And then a little later there is a show about Ozzy Osbourne’s world tour. Man I love ertflix, it’s definitely better than all paid subscription platforms in Greece and it is free.

Hey Nick! I’ve noticed that your dad doesnt work a very safe job so do you ever feel worried or concerned for him
Oh yeah, all the time. I mean, night guarding is already a difficult job to begin with. The late hours, the threat of burglary, minimum wage... Then you have to consider the living exhibits he watches! And not all the exhibits he meets are exactly, uh... nice either. So I do worry about him sometimes. He's my dad, I'm always going to. But he has everyone at the museum by his side, which has got to be like having the coolest bodyguards ever, right? I know he'll keep them safe, and I know they'll keep him safe!

hello! 8 & 10 for the museum ask, please!
Thank you for the ask, dear @ouiouixmonami. :-)
8. If you could have a behind the scenes tour of any museum, which one would you pick?
I would probably choose the Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann. I love Neanderthals and human evolution and would not even dream to imagine what all I could see and learn during a behind-the-scenes-tour.
10. What piece of art (that you haven’t seen) would you like to see in person?
It’s a tie between two paintings. The first Guernica by Pablo Picasso:
Tumblr media
A copy of the painting adorns a wall in my church, right next to the organ. When I was younger, I was absolutely frightened by what I saw but over the years, fright turned into fascination and fascination turned into adoration. It is still somewhat shocking to behold – but by God, it brings its message across.

The second painting is De sterrennacht by Vincent van Gogh. There is probably no other artist that I admire quite like van Gogh and De sterrennacht has always filled me with an otherworldly fascination. I hardly can describe it.

THE ANCIENT ONE I never understood it, but he thought it was hilarious. Every time he saw me, he would greet me as Kennewick Man. No one else laughed. But he sure did. I never took offense. I was more confused than anything else. Looking back, I consider it an honor. I am Kennewick Man. We are all Kennewick Man. The Native American moniker for this man is The Ancient One, which I think is pretty cool.
