me trying to explain the reason Charles is bald and walking in the eighties during the og3 xmen films is because the original origins for that was magneto: origins and not first class
Tumblr media
when we first meet him in the script he’s literally described as a “chrome dome” 😭
he lost his hair at a young age due to his brain being so powerful 💔😔😿
i’m making a whole other timeline for this, man its all different nothing connects ☹️
this is the writers fault by the way, they can’t keep up consistency

About Lip Flap...
So, Ending 72 of Detective Conan got me thinking about lip flap:
youtube
What do I mean by that? Well, in some circles of the AMV-making world, it's maybe viewed as a "sin" to leave lip flaps unedited when there are no audible words. You either cut out the movements entirely, or you sync up the movements to match the lyrics of the song. Lip flap is distracting and immersion breaking.
Yet... this Detective Conan ending—mixing anime and music just like an AMV!—has lots of lip flap. Characters are talking and living and spouting out conversations, and there's no effort at all to hide or remove that. In fact, this sequence was deliberately animated that way.
And it's far from the only Detective Conan example in this vein. Which brings me to my next thought: early episodes of Detective Conan include instances of montages or characters otherwise moving their mouths without sound, but the FUNimation English dub seemingly found this so uncomfortable that words were added in:
Sometimes, I really love this choice! Conan's voice fading into Shinichi's in Episode 39 is one of my all-time favorite moments in the dub. Similarly, Conan's added little "but"s in Episode 32 are adorable.
But I feel like the montage in Episode 37 is weakened by the added dialogue because we didn't need any words to understand the story, and while Episode 42 might be argued to be more compelling and "show don't tell" without Conan's narration, we do miss a fair amount of information from that narration.
Overall, though, I think the changes indicate a cultural difference. Lip flap without audible words is fine for Japanese audiences, but overseas, it's seen as awkward and jarring.
So, is it a "sin" to include unedited lip flap in your AMVs? Well, it probably depends on who you ask!
But personally, my mindset has changed to not at all. I think there are moments where the indication of words can be quite powerful, just like in Detective Conan Ending 72 or the montage in Episode 37. While I mostly try to remove or sync lip flap in my own AMVs, there are also definitely times where I leave it. What's wrong with showing that there was a conversation?
That said... I gotta come clean. One of my first reactions to Ending 72 was to almost cringe at all the lip flap! But then I thought about it some more. While I'm rather inexperienced with making MMVs (Manga Music Videos), ever since I started, I've been a fan of leaving the speech bubbles unedited, text and all—despite the fact that this, similarly, seems to be somewhat of a "sin." I liked providing context, I liked that there were creative things you could do with the dialogue... and hey, is that really so different from leaving in some lip flap from time to time?
In the end, AMV editing is very subjective. Everyone has their own preferences and styles that speak to them, and that's part of what makes the art form so beautiful to me. But Ending 72 made me step back and reconsider some of the "rules" that I'd drilled into my head. Maybe what I've become so used to seeing as a "flaw" can actually be quite powerful in its own right!
#ramblings#amv talk#long post#video#detective conan#case closed#funimation english dub script#hmm maybe i should make a tag for rambling about amvs...#but this is an essay i've been rotating around in my head for a while! but honestly i feel like i didn't have that much to say ^^;#what took the longest was compiling and subbing that video... wish i could have subbed that insert song better#but there are no lyrics for the english version included anywhere officially afaik#and crunchyroll didn't translate the japanese version either... i tried my best 😭#but yeah i think this is a part of amv editing that probably isn't considered unless you're into the hobby#i definitely didn't think about it at first! even though i *loved* watching amvs! i think i made a few amvs before i was like#'hmm isn't it neat if i edit the mouth movements to line up with the song a bit?'#and then i kind of tried to remove and sync as much lip flap as possible because i got more into editing and saw the mindsets around it#but i think the tl;dr here is that any editing choice can be really powerful and work depending on how it's used#and i think that definitely goes for lip flap too!#but i hope this is interesting for folks not into editing as well! i found the funimation thing pretty curious#even before i was an amv editor. but now that i *do* edit amvs i'm like hmmmmmmmmmm#haha anyway gosh again i need to get back to my hd english dub project... gonna use the tag for#my edits#because the eng dub was all mixed in hd by me! and apparently will never be done officially because of the changed names#i'm over halfway there right 😭 76/123... (feel free to message me about it too haha....)

genuinely it’s this kinda shit that makes me seriously question my existence as a film major, specifically one focused on screenwriting for television. like it’s such a disgustingly hostile environment for any creators and just seems like an industry that gets progressively harder and more painful to participate in. why am I even doing this if whatever I may end up putting my time and effort and soul into will probably end up spat on and tossed out (if it even miraculously gets picked up by one of the handful of big malicious streaming entities that control what is and isn’t produced and seen in the first place). it’s either 1) don’t make any money and be doomed to have a second job forever, or 2) be subject to the torment and humiliation of the streaming service empire for eternity. that’s the state of show creation right now and it actually makes me sick and I just hope one day soon everyone gets tired enough of this status quo to shift the norm of how shows get produced back to a state where shows don’t require the permission of streaming services and other big corporate entities to exist and continue existing. that’s the only thing that’d make me feel like I have a real future in my own field.

And another thing-
I'm not a super big fan of the way that CK subtly reframes (through the perspective of other characters criticizing Daniel in story) Miyagi very obviously sharing his culture with Daniel out of mutual respect and affection as, instead cultural appropriation.
Why? For what purpose?
#do not get me started on the “dont be there. what. you couldnt even teach him English”#i Will start throwing rocks#ck negativity#i swear im not trying to be like thia but just i mean what#they did that to try to make him less sympathetic i think.#which. tbh. is bad writing.#ghe same way they flipped the script to Daniel being rich and johnny being working class to frame them against#each other. and in a situation where jt was obvious story telling shorthand which person you were SUPPOSED to find sympathetic#which. did NOT. need to be done. because it could've been very easy to humanize johnny#and flesh out his character. without trying to walk back or reframe his already canon characterization#because people and characters can be complex and are allowed to be more than one thing at once#which again. was better done in the first two seasons and then juat dropped?#what because they were worried the new fans werent smart enough to get it?#or because they were purposefully aiming to please those new fans who Did Not Get It#and just liked the classic rock and beer and jokes#the number of times uve seen “hes so un PC i love it!” no. like. a vwry big part of his character arc#in the first two seasons was that he was getting better about that! his entire thing with Miguel. “hes Dominican”#his entire thing like “oh. maybe violence isnt always the answer”#just to be like “lol psyche”#I would like to sit johnjoshhayden down and make them try to explain exactly why they made all these writing choices#disrespectful to the characters and the audience tbh#im fine lol

one one hand, I kinda see why all the other classes would make their jack ace and al jeannes their class leader. like, if you were a univeil student, I can see the student logic of going, "yeah this guy knows how to put on a good performance, let's make him the leader!"
but in hindsight... that's such a bad decision?? like, imagine as the lead performer, you have to be in charge of both the performance and the class. that's too much responsibility! instead of focusing on delivering on stage, you now have to split your attention with everyone else's roles. not even takarazuka does this. the top star and kumichou are usually not the same person. so I would assume that's also how the tamasaka troupe works. univeil students what are you doing lmao
I think one of the reasons why quartz works is because neji isn't the lead performer. he writes, he directs, he acts, he dances, he sings, but he's not the main lead. by taking on responsibility for the backstage work (except for props/tech/etc.), fumi/kai/kisa/whoever can focus on their own craft as performers.
like. how is kaido leading onyx while also being the jack ace? how is he getting and working on feedback? I could say the same for tsukasa, but at least tsukasa has minorikawa doing a lot of the heavy lifting. amber is kind of a special case, I guess, because they all want chui to be the stage. but honestly if chui was a better leader, amber wouldn't have to be this way lmao. like, chui is great but he's holding amber back, sorry to say. they could do so much more than this
(hm I guess the teachers in other classes are more hands-on and provide more guidance and support than enishi, so they can get away with lead performers being class leaders)
I was thinking about this because I was imagining what kisa's year two in univeil would be like. the next class leaders are gonna be mitsuki, sugachi, and minorikawa, right? and all three of them tend to step back to let other people shine or to play support, so I actually think they're very logical choices for the next class leaders. plus that would probably be the year chui would try to like. make friends and human connections. so I'm just imagining that year two would be quite healing for univeil, especially since in year one they are all still kinda hung up on tsuki being univeil's treasure. you can have other treasures!! love tsuki, but he isn't the only golden boy here!!

Love love LOVEEE your depiction / modifications of Al-Qatala. I’d never noticed before how weird their actions in the game are until you pointed it out. Why the fuck Would a agitating liberation organization fuck with anything in Piccadilly???? I really love the differences and dynamics you highlighted between the ULF and Al Mudahiyn!
Hi, Thank you so much!
I kinda understand why they did this from the dev's POV, bc for them, a way to show an organization is "extremely dangerous" and "ruthless", is for them to come to the 141's home turf in the UK (because showing them harming people in Urzikstan or Russia wouldn't be "scary enough").
I'm glad you like Al Mudahiyn. They're definitely gonna show up in part 2, so I'll be interested to explore their motivations more in the future!

i wish i could hide individual posts on twitter like sometimes people i like post my gifs (other than the ones i've posted here for everyone to use freely) and i have no more fight in me left to ask people to credit because people over there have been hostile about it (so like, even when the poster is nice about it, i've had "popular" accounts jumping in on conversations they weren't part of to try and claim that crediting other fans for their work was "unreasonable", and in the first place it's pretty 50/50 whether people respond reasonably and add credit or if they ignore and mute/block me so they can continue stealing my gifs without me being sooooo mean and unreasonable and linking to the source i guess) and it's someone i don't wanna unfollow or mute but it just drains my spirit to see that post you know. please let me know if there is a thing like xkit on tumblr that works for hiding individual twitter posts

I forget if I ever actually posted my Aubrey open mic performance but if you haven't seen it here it is!! This is the mic I went to with Scott back in July which was the first time he ever saw any of my comedy. I flubbed the order of a few sections and the microphone being taped to the stand threw me off but overall it was a good time. Also I have no idea why the audio pans weirdly with headphones and idk how to fix it so sorry about that:
youtube
the rest of this post is me deliberating about an aubrey decision bc i find the best way for me to figure things out is by explaining them to someone, so if you want an insight into my creative process read on, otherwise hope you enjoy!!
ok deliberation time lmao!!
i hadn't rewatched this set since right after i did it and honestly i think i feel a lot more positively towards it than i did before, but i'm also sitting here thinking, do i want to do this monologue anymore?
because the "uncle reg" monologue is the one i've performed the most times, and more than that, i think the introduction of reg really unlocked aubrey's characterization beyond anything else i've written. reg allows aubrey to contrast against someone, find unlikely common ground, and also is an outlet for comedy about some of the most unique relationships in my life
but the monologue itself? i mean, it's fine. it's not horribly out of character or anything, and the jokes work. it's a little more firm in one label than the aubrey i currently know, but it still scans.
but idk, i've written so much more aubrey and reg material since then (both monologues and sitcom-like episode concepts, some of my favorites being "nom de plum", "reg's funeral-orgy", "re-claiming the f word (friendship)", "don't grill the baby", and "hospital hookup"). and when i look at this character introduction, i feel like it gets bogged down in the little squabbles about labels and doesn't really have a story to it like the newer material does. it has a little bit of a story, with the pride stuff at the end, but that's barely developed (and my ideas for what else happened that day might work better as a sitcom episode).
and y'know maybe that's also reflective of how my own intergenerational-queer-friendships have evolved since i first wrote uncle reg, no longer getting bogged down in labels and arguments and instead going on zany adventures. but even tho the monologue is called "uncle reg", uncle reg isn't confined to one monologue
and i know i could always keep doing this monologue and just mix in others, or rewrite it to give it more of a storyline, but i kind of just want to leave it as "aubrey stage one". part of me wanted to keep doing it until i got a "perfect" recording (not flubbing any lines), but this might be the best it gets, and i'll keep getting better with the material i actually want to do lmao
idk i think the reason this is on my mind is bc as i'm going over the plans for scott's tour, i already had this goal that any time we stay in a city for an extended number of days, i'd seek out local open mics and do my own unofficial aubrey tour. and one of the other tour-members has a lot of connections to small clubs, so he said he might be able to get me booked shows as aubrey (and someone from toronto said the same thing at scott's new years party). so i'm wanting to firm up my material and practice it in my hometown a bit before taking it on the road. and also it's interesting navigating this culture-war-bullshit as this character, because i don't think aubrey can only appear to queer audiences or gen z or liberals etc. (you might disagree, but i don't want to perform in a bubble) but i need to figure out how to strike the right tone, and i think i have other material that works better for that (sometimes even edgier material, like the "hypothetical penis" monologue is still in)
idk it's daunting bc even tho i have a lot of aubrey material (two and a half notebooks worth), i haven't put it into a polished-monologue-format in a while bc i've been procrastinating. and the "uncle reg" monologue is the only one i ever completely memorized. but i want to get better at this so i just have to do it!!!
anyway thank you for reading this far if you did! i think i'm pretty much settled on not doing this monologue anymore (or at least just putting it on the shelf for now so i can motivate myself to do other material) but feel free to give your thoughts. and before you go...

I’m not someone to complain about dubs cause I REALLY don’t care what people watch unless it’s a really inaccurate dub but there is something so infuriating about a dub that has a solid voice cast and direction but then you compare the sub and quality wise there on a similar level but then you see how they change lines, pause and go “what the fuck”
(I am talking about the casshern sins dub which- god damn it funanimation)

IA 2.0 voisona test with a short version of drag on dragoon's ending B song tsukiru/exhausted :) now i can hear Lia's beautiful dulcet tones sing scary scary songs
#vocal synth wip#maybe i'll finish it. not sure if im fully happy with the base file yet. ive been working on it + the growing wings ver for a thousand year#the timing is super tricky. why did i decide to make an svp of the most intentionally muffled smothering whispering song on earth#as my first attempt at making an svp by myself. why did i do this myself#also the instrumental probably needs work since its just a basic like software remove vocal situation LOL#there is no official instrumental rip..... i think someone had made a nice piano instrumental like five years ago but the videos down so#this is all we got LOL#the base file was an svp because i started this whole project in sv because..... its easier for me LOL BUt also i didnt feel like dealing#with the whispering in the bg of the original so i was like. just gonna make a flat track and maybe output the aspiration separate#and like fuck around with that until it sounds weird enough. but voisona and cevio dont have that function so i just stopped at the main#vocal + the chorus double. which also i have been so spoiled by sv scripts. randomize timing my beloved. i had to manually randomize it her#it took.... a thousand years 😔😔😔😔 although i guess thats fine since the tuning is like mostly default with just some tiny adjustments#i was more interested in messing with the different voice expressions and stuff in voisona <3 IA 2.0 has like this awesome exhale expressio#that im in love with because like. okay the one thing i think UTAU banks always have on any other synth is the end breath situation#no other software has given me as expressive end breaths as ur average utau bank. but IA's exhale is getting there!!!#also hopefully this isnt too loud. this is a very loud song. drakengard is a very loud game#edit: i mixed this like deliriously melting from a lack of AC and a bajillion percent humidity and listening back i now realize how#fucked up the volume levels are LOL ia's a BIT too loud and that double should be messed with a lot#but it works for demo purposes i think at least. kinda
