There is something going really messy in the Mabel's arc btw. Idk, I appreciate the late bloomer issue, I appreciate the impostor syndrom issue, I understand the heavy idea of having no future neither prospectives, being a Millennial with no money, but where is her mother at this point? I'm Italian, maybe culturally it's different (I have no idea, I just wonder), but if you're in such difficulty, your family tries to help you, right? (I know, I know that it's in part a necessity for the storyline having all three in the building.. but still)
And maybe I take too personally, because I went to art school, (don't mind me) but what happened to artist Mabel? She was part of her, she also painted when she was going through the worst times - the teenage trauma with Zoe, Tim's death and then the trauma of her father's death. I need her back yy
At least, we left love interests per season behind, thank god 👀👀 I mean... I hope so, we are just in the middle right now... so... we are safe(??).

2023 in kdramas
*that i finished
**in order of how deep and lasting the brainrot was/is from barely a smidge to stitched to my soul
[12] I figured See You In My 19th Life would be trying when I couldn’t understand why an extraordinary individual in her 18th life—18 incredible lives lived over some of history’s most happening centuries—would fixate on one pesky schoolboy. I bought it because (a) Shin Hye-sun was selling it (b) the show tried to make it clear that while she remembered her past lives, it is not the same as living the one she is in. So when the young Ju-won meets Seo-ha, she is still a 12-year-old who happens to fall for a 9-year-old, except she has heightened emotional maturity.
The plot follows Ju-won, who is reincarnated as Ban Ji-eum, her 19th life after her 18th was cut short in a car accident with Seo-ha. Then, the show fumbles its own logic, unable to choose if the real gift is living in the present or remembering how we got there. We are told that Ji-eum is determined to fix the life she didn’t get to live as Ju-won and because Ju-won’s family and Seo-ha are still alive, that’s who she seeks out. She also finds a dear one from her 17th life. The twist is that the 18th life was meant to be a fated reincarnation of two lovers, who in their time—the first life—were wronged. In the end, when the sins are atoned for, Ji-eum loses the memories of her past lives. She is Ji-eum, smart and talented, daughter of an abusive man and born destitute, free of karmic obligations. But who is this Ji-eum? Who does she love? Why are the memories of everyone who knew her as the extraordinary Ju-won/Ji-eum so valuable and hers isn’t? Milquetoast writing and a genuine lack of interesting characters in the rest of the show.
[11] I didn’t finish the first season of Dr. Romantic because I had a violent reaction (derogatory) to Yoo Yeon-seok’s character. I went straight to the additional episode ft. Kim Hye-soo who is ~flails~ and warmed up to this fantastic ensemble, thanks to a YYS-less sequel. Season 3 is ambitious and follows the raggity crew of overworked doctors in a country hospital now coping with its expansion into an elite trauma centre. The show does neither this premise nor the incredible cast they managed to bring back together (at least four of who could demand three times what they were paid in S2) any real justice. It had all the ingredients and an emotional core that is most pleasing to me. Seriously, it was so good: in reaching for the Michelin stars of healthcare, ostensibly Kim Sabu’s legacy, both he and his colleagues find that they may need to reassess what he taught them. Look at the implications. Doldam is a hospital that has run for two seasons on the strength of close-knit interpersonal relationships in ways (some might accuse) hazardous to professional codes. Something's gotta give.
DRR S3 does not trust the emotional tensions that these ideas can provoke and instead, throws in spectacle after spectacle. A bloodbath on a ship carrying illegal migrants, a raging forest fire, a building collapse. And there are villains, written as yangs to yings, in a main character's father played by an actual trash person, and then groan a politician. I mean, the vagaries of ill fortune and death is right there. Isn’t that enough? Makes you wonder just how did Lee-Shin partnership accomplish what they did with HosPlay. Someone who loves DRR’s characters will sit through it. But it’s junk food.
[10] Lee Bo-young is a force in Agency. It's a tried and tested formula: a brilliant creative person with abandonment issues in fantastic clothes. I enjoyed the snippy dialogues, peppered with refreshing metaphor and irony reminiscent of vintage Hollywood flicks. The writing isn’t confident about what it wants to say about an ambitious single woman in a workplace (and other women too including working mothers, women who find no need in dressing up to do their jobs, expert women who still have to struggle when they want to build something). But perhaps you, like me, can let it pass. It is not ideal to fetch a real answer to women’s struggles amidst capitalist excess.
[9] Our Blooming Youth begins with a cursed prince (Park Hyung-sik) and a noblewoman (Jeon So-nee) accused of murdering her entire family joining hands to free each other. Lurking behind is a national conspiracy spearheaded by several degenerate officials who wish to erase a people and their history—interesting that OBY and My Dearest later in the year featured the most marginalised being branded as traitors. The prince and noblewoman (cross-dressed as a eunuch of course) are joined by four young individuals who feel a sense of duty. I adored this band and their shenanigans. The show is kind to the youth in question, to their capacity to chase freedom and friendship. I was moved by such love for characters in this story about nationhood as an ongoing project.
But enjoying OBY means reading in between the lines because the show doesn’t know what to do with its 20-episode length or the depth of its interest in the scars of unacknowledged genocide. I felt impatient and unfulfilled more times than I’d like. I wish OBY was more meaty because it had the opportunity to be radical and chose to be inoffensive. Hyung-sik, very dear to me. So-nee, GOSH. I have loved her since Encounter (2018) and she fills a frame like nobody’s business. If there is such a thing as female gaze, she’s got it. I caught her in the little I watched of Soulmate (2023) recently. A marvel, just like Kim Da-mi.
[8] One Day Off is whimsical and celebrates the mundane in eight chapters following the wanderings of a school teacher, played by the luminous Lee Na-young. Japanese entertainment does discovering minor joys and its everydayness so well that it’s a genre in itself. I have seen it in a handful Korean variety shows too. As a drama, this is new to me and ODO felt special. It giveth in multitudes taking us to a monastery, an art exhibit, a film festival, a planetarium, many bakeries. At other times, it puts us in the middle of a rainy day and ancestral rites and a bus station where the teacher is stuck with condescending boomers. It's lovely.
[7] King The Land benefitted from low expectations of prestige. Junho lovers were tuning in to see him frolic after his Baeksang-winning performance as King Jeongjo, I can’t speak for Yoon-A lovers. The makers wanted to bank on these beloved actors and there is minimal friction between who they are and what they play on-screen. Junho, handsome, rich, kind. Yoon-A, pretty, hardworking, warm. There is a good chance that this show was part of a joint marketing campaign by Dior and Estee Lauder. And also, possibly, Thailand's tourism department. KTL is classic popcorn, easy on the eyes, easy on the mind (save for that irritatingly stupid arc with the ‘Arab prince’), designed to be innocuous. Here’s the thing, though: the cast and crew were not messing around with that dough. They chose to inject this fan + consumer service with an earnest desire to entertain missers of fluff romance. Lee Junho, permanent resident of my heart.
[6] Going in with low expectations helped when I watched My ID is Gangnam Beauty too. Kang Mi-rae is starting college with a new face, having shed her old one at the surgeon’s table because of life-long bullying at being conventionally unattractive. But Mi-rae now has to deal with gossip and judgement about the extents she has gone for what’s deemed as a vanity project. When Mi-rae says that it matters what people think of her, I can't object. It’s because Gangnam Beauty tells a story about familiar feelings and yet, it is also defiantly about Mi-rae. You can walk with her but you’re aware that not all of us walk in her precise shoes, and it’s not about measuring who’s having it worse either. I loved watching her settle into her skin, remaining compassionate in whatever is the opposite of noble idiocy.
Very sweet romance. I may not have noticed Cha Eun-woo if I hadn’t been derailed to the hilt by him in Island—also a show I finished but you will not find it on this list For Reasons.
[5] I wanted to love My Dearest a lot more. It was promising what with Namgoong Min as the perfect Lee Jang-hyun and Ahn Eun-jin as the perfect Yoo Gil-chae. NGM’s ability to smirk in a way that elicits both a punch and a blush is unparalleled. He owns the role of clever playboy merchant who sees the rules of polite society as impositions and who values human life above platitudes. AEJ's Gil-chae is stubborn and witty and audacious and has no interest in anything that distracts her from her desires. I loved them, and that became one of my problems when Part 1 ended. NGM is the perfect Jang-hyun and AEJ is the perfect Gil-chae but I wasn’t able to root for their romance. I never quite got over how the desire that they shared, which war put a damper on before it got a chance to bloom, gets cheapened at the end of Part 1—please read @elderflowergin's excellent post about this. In Part 2, that conversation isn’t adequately addressed but I was there to watch these two actors earn their Baeksang nominations. I found myself willing to move with the tides when Jang-hyun and Gil-chae let each other in after they learn to devote themselves to the people who make their community.
I cannot fault MD, however, on its commentary about how war disrupts ordinary life. There is nothing more moving in the show than the Joseon slaves in Qing singing their songs and harvesting rice, yearning for home while the King and his scholars commit to preserving standing and write these countrymen off. It’s a sharp critique of an upper class that delude themselves about their importance. MD is courageous enough to say that the nation does owe something to its people and the nation must prove itself worthy of sacrifice before it can demand such a thing. I haven’t stopped feeling the pangs of this love letter to a people and their land. The first seven episodes, set during the invasion and in the early days of the Joseon surrender, is real television. It’s what I watch sageuks for.
What else? Great telling of Crown Prince So-hyeons’s story. Lee Chung-ah is captivating. MD would have risen in my heart and on this list if it were more attentive to Ryang-eum. Double amnesia was comically exhausting to watch but I do feel generous now. The first time round Jang-hyun regains his memory because of a tangible article that proved Gil-chae’s love for him. The second time he traces back the arc of his life that spawned enduring memories of love and dreams. He’s not looking to retrieve what he doesn’t know he has lost. He knows he has lost and he is piecing together what he can. That’s a bold note to conclude on by makers who have risen to question the state of a nation in the hands of incompetence and cruelty and obscene pride. The racism is unsurprising—I wish this meant that I had better tolerance for it. I also wish the story knew better than to push Eun-hye to the sidelines. My favourite scene is Gil-chae finding Jang-hyun clawing to life by a string on a pile of corpses and proceeding to play dead while holding him tight to escape.
[4] I kept tuning in to Moving week after week despite my reservations about high school life, superheroes, and gore because it is a feat of storytelling. A rewarding first act, an absorbing second, and a near perfect third. It’s a compelling story on its own about superhero parents who will go to any lengths to protect their superhero children. But it’s also poignant in how it tackles passive peace.
Critiques of the state’s abuse of power often turn fangless in the face of this idea about national security, the notion that secures our future. Writers fumble because they feel forced to provide an alternative: how else do we protect what we must? Moving kills the question by letting you see past that what (national security) and takes you to a who (our children, our literal future). It dismantles the illusions with its central stage as a highly-surveilled school where undercover secret agents observe and train gifted children. The litmus test isn’t going to be the abstraction of a nation. It’s going to be whether our children can grow up, can learn, can be free to be who they want to be, irrespective of talents they may or may not possess.
A state which can’t imagine freedom as such is a failed state and a failed state resorts to joining hands with those who have every interest in keeping us from seeing that we do in fact want the same things as our neighbours. The real world bleeds in when the story of two Koreas becomes apparent. It’s acutely observed in a way that’s trope-y but perhaps not untrue. But the show is more interested in the shared Koreanness, in their love for their children, and for the unimpeachable desire to make their lives better.
Park Hee-soon had me hugging myself from his first frame to the last. Electrifying performance. Han Hyo-joo, oh my god.
[3] My Lovely Boxer was made for me. It’s about Gwon-sook (Kim So-hye), a boxing prodigy who disappeared from public eye after failing to show up for a championship game and Tae-young (Lee Sang-yeob), a ruthless sports agent at the cross hairs of matchfixing. Tae-young has messes to clean, payments to make, and he finds Gwon-sook to bring her back to the limelight for one final game to lose. Gwon-sook wants nothing to do with the sport and Tae-young promises that if disappearing for good is what she wants, then this plan would work for her too. It’s exactly as angsty as it sounds.
The show works because it doesn’t touch a thing that it isn’t willing to gnaw into. It doesn’t merely dangle matchfixing as plot omen—it explores the emotional and economic damages for the sportsmen with heft. Gwon-sook feels no love for boxing but she isn’t the only boxer in the world and that feeling is hardly universal. One of my favourite characters this year is Ah-reum, the opponent of that championship game for which Gwon-sook didn’t show up. That day, Gwon-sook may have chosen to leave the game for self-preservation but she also took away Ah-reum’s right to fair play. MLB is at its best when it navigates Gwon-sook seeking Ah-reum’s forgiveness because therein lies sportsmanship and what it means to tirelessly push your body for a shot at the ring. It’s an exhilarating journey with these two girls because (a) you want Ah-reum to have her moment (b) you don’t want Gwon-sook to lose and let the matchfixing bookers pocket money (c) you begin to wish Gwon-sook could win because she is too good. The stakes are delicious because the bookers are also a tad bit murderous and the final match had me at the edge of my seat.
Lee Sang-yeob was a shock to my system with his intense stare and a thespian interpretation of a man in shades of grey. Sexy bitch. I want to see Kim So-hye and Shin Se-kyung play sisters one day.
[2] Into The Ring tops my list of kdrama romcoms. Nana is a star and the fact that Se-ra cannot walk straight to save her life makes me giggle. She is blunt in the wrong ways, sharp in the wrong ways, and honest in all the right ways. Her heart is big and she has a sense of service to the people around her as though she really believes she was raised by a village. I loved Se-ra’s parents who reminded me of my own in their warmth and clownery. Park Sung-hoon’s Gong-myung is the dream guy: competent at work, loser in everything else. There’s only one kind of valid workplace romance and it’s this: accidentally becoming an elected representative and your childhood nerd friend volunteering to be your secretary to cover your ass. Perfect, no notes.
I happened to be reading Sara Ahmed’s Complaint! around the same time and I think it made me love the show's take on political action more. This is where Se-ra begins, just her and her complaint diary. That early episode where it dawns on her that she wants this job as much as she needs it got to me. There’s much to love in a show that is okay with however small a population she represents, as long as they are fun about joy and serious about justice.
[1] At the outset, Call It Love sounded like the makjang I avoid—a relationship between a woman and the son of her father’s mistress? Turns out, it's possible to tell that story like an accomplished spare poem with meticulously composed frames overdoing headroom and pared down dialogues. In effect, CIL is beautiful to look at and inviting to spend time with. This is kdrama caviar. Debut writer Kim Ga-eun has a gift for writing loneliness and solitude as not mutually exclusive to being a loved and loving person. She’s drawn comparisons to the extraordinary Park Hae-young who is the master at this sorcery. To my mind, the comparisons hold merit in subject but they operate with different intentions and styles. I hope they meet one day and I get to be a fly on the wall.
I was struck by how Lee Sung-kyung played Woo-joo as the responsible middle child, the one most burdened by the timing of her family’s collapse. The show is about her revenge but often, you see her struggle with the coldness this demands of her. She cannot resist what comes easiest to her and that’s her ability to see people having bad times as a reflection of the times, not the people. It's why she can forgive the aggrieved man who harms her, and why she tidies Dong-jin’s ex’s house while the ex is recouping from the heartbreak of losing the same man she is falling in love with.
No one has gotten the allure of the quiet guy, the shy guy, the good guy who is too awkward to be nice like Kim Young-kwang has. Dong-jin knows he has to work very hard to keep up with the pace of the world. He knows his mind but is afraid to impose it, because he doesn’t think it matters and because he doesn’t want to be a bother. Young-kwang just gets that line between clarity and low-esteem. I will never forget his teary eyes and total submission to loving Woo-joo in the single word he lets out with a hitched exhale. He slouches a lot but he will look you in the eye when he has to say something he doesn’t want to repeat. I loved him for that dignity. Special kisses to him for ditching neck ties.
It is true pleasure to see two male leads, majestic and towering in physique, composed to look tiny and frail. At one point, the costume department steps up Woo-joo’s wardrobe as her feelings intensify and it doesn't come across as a makeover. It is presented as the ordinary consequence of paying attention. I loved everything and everyone. The siblings. The ex-girlfriend, the bad mother and also, the generous & kinda clueless one. The stepfather who lingered, the best friends, the loyal & competent manager lady. Favourite kiss.
*
I am currently watching four dramas: A Good Day To Be A Dog (cute & fun), My Demon (silly & fun), Park's Marriage Contract (testing my patience), and Tell Me That You Love Me (relishing but for some reason not investing). I missed Not Others and The Eighth Sense when they were airing and they are the two shows from 2023 that I am adding to my watchlist. I am looking forward to 2024 because we seem to be getting at least one release from several greats and beauties. See you then! I hope no one emails you for the rest of the year and you eat well.

During the barrage of accusations on Jinlan City, time suddenly freezes. Perhaps, SY should be surprised or moved, but mostly he's annoyed.
"What do you want, stupid system? I agreed to my fate!"
But instead of the automated voice pack, he hears the first modern sentence not from himself or airplane in years.
"User 002, Fantasy Fork, Designation: Proud Immortal Demon Way has submitted more complaints than literally any other user. More than any two users combined. Fucking system complaints georg over here."
The speaker is an idyllic, xianxia, fairy-type woman whose skin was so white she went past jade-like right into European. Europe didn't even exist in PIDW, more's the pity since neither did coffee.
The fairy touches her temple and her expression tightens even as one eyebrow lifts. "I'm a System Moderator and no one else can see me, can you please contain yourself for five minutes?"
"Wait, you're an actual person, person?"
"Once the world is instantiated, everyone in it is a real person," she says casually, matter of factly, as if she's not making the most insane lore-drop in the world-ly. "But am I originally from your world? Yes."
"What the fuck?" SY says articulately.
She sighs and pulls out a fucking iPad knock off from her sleeve. What was the point of dressing herself like a fairy and then a) still being white and b) being anachronistic. "Existential crisis later, addressing major complaints now. You're ruining my metrics, I hope you realize."
"Why are you American? Shouldn't I at least get a Chinese representative? Do you even have YY novels?"
A vein pops in her temple. Rather, a little anime anger-symbolizing vein floats next to her head.
"Can you focus for five minutes? Computers are racist, that's why I'm white." Before he can get a word on, she yells, "Moving on! You have too many complaints filed. Unless something changes, you're going to be fast tracked to a system-shutdown."
"So no matter what I do, I'm sent back to my decaying body? No thanks, unsubscribe. Fuck your metrics."
"You're currently in the pre-after life where your soul, memory intact, has been cached and inserted into the IP you thought about the most. System shutdown results in leaving the pre-after life for the after life. No existential questions, I don't know!"
...
"How come you're a moderator and I'm a scum villain?"
Behind her, a candle appears, burning in front of a paper that says "METRICS" in English.

While I am not in the least shipping Chu Qiao with YY this time around, I do like him as a character a lot. And I think the main reason is he is a rare person who accepts responsibility for his fuck ups and outcomes of his actions or inactions.
Think of the scene when he visits Yan Xun in jail. YX, desperately, keeps asking him whether he did X, Y, and Z - all actions that contributed to the platform tragedy (not warning him, preventing his escape etc etc etc.) And YY admits to it all even though there are explanations or excuses for each and every one of these.
He provides none of those explanations or excuses because he gets something most people do not - that all those explanations and excuses would be insults to Yan Xun, that all they would be is attempt for YY to justify himself as not that bad, but none of them would change the ultimate fact - his actions and his inactions (even if different in gradation or kind from what YX believes they are) all led to Yan Xun on that platform, being broken over and over. Trying to justify himself would be trying to go "I am also suffering! see, I also have pain" to the actual victim.
The closest he comes to that is this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he stops after that one sentence escapes him. Because ultimately whatever he did or didn't do, he realizes it all comes to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He protects them from outside prison (the only way YX and CQ survive the waves of assassins is because of him) but once again, neither knows because for all his coldness, for all his passivity, YY understands what is fair and what is deserved for him, and does not deviate.
PS As I was telling @aysekira, I have pictured LGX as my Mo Xi from Yuwu for years and years but never could figure out who I wanted for Gu Mang. And now I am going - aaaaaaa just have Shawn Dou be Gu Mang in my head cast. The look, the vibe, hell even the fact that he's a little shorter than LGX all work. And hey, they totally were great at both jumping into beds or fighting to the death. So mmmm.
PPS I normally loathe love triangles, but rewatching PA made me realize something - I don't really hate the trope, it's just that it's almost never done to my satisfaction. It's always ML and SML clearly delineated so you know the outcome/importance so what is the point. Also, it's either an OTP and an annoying interloper who has no chance or FL is waffling and if she doesn't care enough to pick, why should I? BUT!!!!! The very few times it's done right, I lose my mind - this, Bu Bu Jing Xin, Lost You Forever. By that I mean, both choices have to have equal narrative importance and arcs and time (PA for example, is definitely a dual ML drama in the traditional, not "we are putting a fig leaf over a danmei adaptation" form), but also I am a sucker of there is a possibility for either depending on reactions and the world and/or FL loves both differently for different reasons during different points in her life. This is vvvvvvvv hard to pull off right but when they do, mmmmm!
PPPS I don't usually go "threesome would solve all your problems" (and here it definitely won't since YX's issues are not of the type to be healed by love) but it would be at least worth a try? Chu Qiao definitely has enough energy for both of her dudes, YY is icy enough he needs two people to melt him and clearly poor YX needs double the TLC. win win win, say I.

How I feel before the fic - 6/10, 😐🙃🫠🙍🏻‍♀️
Right off the bat, can feel how frustrated darling is with the way dami asks things!!! Can practically see the fuckin eye roll as he asking where and with who!! (As if he probably doesn't have a tracker on half the shit darling owns)
Pls the way Damian is questioning darling like it's an interrogation! And then is almost like okay and? When darling answers him!!! Like sir!!
Firmly believe that yes Dami is much better than when he first arrived at the manor, he still has those moments where the teachings fucking seep into his frontal lobe like something awakening. Hence the 'owning' darling part and the fact that he gets why it's not socially acceptable but.....neither is half of the other things he does so it's kinda catch 22 with that one for him at times.
AND RHEN SAYING HE WOULD HAVE STOPPED HAD HE KNOWN DARLING FELT THAT WAY WHEN IK FOR A FACT HE WOULD SIMPLY NOT BE SO OPEN ABOUT IT!!! HE WOULD KEEP THEM AS INSIDE THOUGHTS !
Damian the manipulative king ngl
Man's probably thinks manipulation is much more extreme than what he's doing, probably considers what he does is just expressing himself :/
Damian really thinking he can talk darling down until being "threatened" with darling actually leaving!
My baby boy, yr father's relationships are ALSO UNHEALTHY! FIGHTING ESPECIALLY IN SUCH CAPACITY ISNT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE IN LOVE?!??!
him on his knees as a way to show you his devotion, willingly kneeling before only you and ever only you is something that means the highest level of love and devotion. And then the please, and the kissing? It's him trying to show you the fact that you're his deity and only wishes to keep you safe from the grime that is humanity! AND THEN ASKING TO CORRWCT HIS BEHAVIOR? ESSENTIALLY BEGGING TO ATONE FOR HIS SINS AT THE FEET OF HIS DIETY????
He just wants his soul to mingle with yours<3 your life lines intertwined in such a way that it'll extend past this life time<3 you'll be each other's in any and all times.
Damian is dastardly good at reminding darling why it's him. The way his body was born into this world to be with you and give you pleasure, as you were to him. You've belonged to each other since your first breaths and you will continue to be so until your last. At least, that's what he thinks.
The way you write Damian is so good, I really just adore it because it's so him but also just.....I can't see him falling in love normally. It always ends up like this, it's damn near hereditary. It's so good. Loved this fic and all the other Dami fics you post<3
Me after reading this - 9/10🫡🙂‍↕️🤤😲🥴🤭
Also no cookies yet, forgot I needed to soften the butter so been waiting on that while reading.
Much love Damian anon
Pls the way Damian is questioning darling like it's an interrogation! And then is almost like okay and? When darling answers him!!! Like sir!!
tell me why i got pissed off and i wrote it KJGHJSLDJFAHISD . while damian worships darling he also is. Damian. also at that point he just thought 'oh we're fighting right now. whatever. lovers fight (bruce x talia/selina) its always fine in the end,' not 'oh i'm about to lose your ass' KGHDSIOJHISDGI so he course-corrected real fast
Man's probably thinks manipulation is much more extreme than what he's doing, probably considers what he does is just expressing himself :/
EXACTLT YY EXACTLY YOU'RE IN MY BRAIN . YOURE IN MY BRAIN!!!! LIKE ITS JUST HILARIOUS THINKING ABOUT YAN DAMIAN B/C HE REALLY JUST THINKS HE'S EXPRESSING HIMSELF. he thinks "i'm just being forthcoming this can't be manipulation." HE'S SOOOO MISGUIDED AND EVIL BUT DOESNT EVEN KNOW IT. ITS SO SAD I LOVE IT . he thinks mistreating you would be like physical abuse or yelling at you.

(TGCF book 7 spoilers!)
After being so busy in the last few days, I was finally able to finish it! Let's just say that I have so many thoughts!
First things first, Shi Qingxuan my beloved 🥹 I missed him a lot! Though I am sad at how much trauma he went through, it's nice to know he isn't completely unhappy and even became a beloved figure in his new community.
Second things second, Yin Yu! Even though he was full of ressentment over always being in the shadow of his shidi, he still protected Quan Yizhen, and I think this means a lot more than he realized! Deep down, I think he still cared deeply for him, and I felt quite sad over his death. (Also, is it just me, or do YY and QYZ remind a lot of SQQ and LBG?)
Speaking of characters I feel sad about, Qi Rong is probably the one I'm going to miss the most. I have so many thoughts on him, I almost don't even know where to start! He was always the character that brought a smile to my face with his shenanigans when things were more serious, so seeing him die was sad, but he had a very satisfatory ending imo! I think that, even after he started hating XL, deep down, he wanted his approval/attention/love, but because of his personality (shaped by multiple circumstances neither he or XL could control), he never truly got it. I think what QR truly wanted was someone who loved him inconditionally and genuinely regardless of his sociopathic and immature behaviour, something he didn't get since his mother died. And, in the end, he got it in the form of a child. Even after threatning Guzi so many times, he always stuck by his side, and, without realizing, QR also became attached, because deep down he just wanted to be loved. As he died, he realized this. Realized that he never got XL's love, but that didn't matter, because in the end he still had what he needed, which was his child's love. 🥹 (Also the irony of him accidentally being right about most gods is not lost on me!)
And of course who can forget about the main highlight of this book? I always knew Jun Wu was related to White No-Face (in part because I was already spoiled he was the big bad of the series, thus they had to be related), and I always suspected White No-Face was the prince of Wuyong, so the reveal didn't surprise me at all. That being said, the way the reveal was executed gave me chills nonetheless! I think JW is perhaps the biggest projector I've seen in a piece of media, he really saw (sees?) XL as a version of himself and thus wants him to "join the dark side", because XL choosing the bright side might mean that JW could've become like that as well, and that perhaps hurts him. He succumbed to his own despair, so someone so identical to him must follow the same path... Right? But I wasn't expecting him to be so... In control of the narrative up until now. I wasn't expecting most monsters to be related to him as well, and I always thought that the HX/SQGX/SW ordeal was something mostly related to the three, so the reveal that JW was planning on getting rid of SW in one way or another... JW truly had eyes everywhere uh.
Another character that was everywhere in the narrative right under our noses as well was Mei Nianqing, he reminded me of XL as he recounted being involved in so many things since the days of Wuyong, to him being the person who tried to warn about SQGX's fate at the hands of the Reverend, to being the state perceptor of Xianle. I knew he was going to play a big role in the story after he was mentioned in book 6, but I wasn't expecting him to have such a big role in the story, to the point where it was him who basically explained the truth about literally everything.
I also liked seeing LQQ again, and Pei Ming was the funniest character besides QR. The shenanigans he gets himself into are always entertaining, but I can't help but pity him. One of his friends is dead, the other works directly for JW, and in the end he had to deal with a crazy ex-lover and a crazy ex-friend as well. Also wasn't expecting Ling Wen to be so... Cold, as she was one of the first characters we saw in the series to be somewhat amiable of XL. Then again, the hints of her coldheartedness were there since the Brocade Immortal arc anyways. It makes her quite the intriguing character!
And last but not least: Mu Qing and Fen Xing. I became much more found of them once I realized they where their own supposed subordinates who helped XL in the beginning. I was quite lukewarm of FX's doomed romance, but after these last two books I understand now why it makes sense within the story. Also, Mu Qing acted quite sus in this book, it didn't cross my mind at first, but I wonder if he's working for JW...?
So yeah, these are my thoughts on book 7! I admit I thought this was the last book of the main story and book 8 would have the extras, but I'm glad the story didn't finish just yet! I hope to get the special edition with merch this christmas haha! Also, I'm glad you liked to hear my thoughts on the story up until now! :)
Yay! Love reading this!
And oh yeah, YY and QYZ are definitely SQQ and LBH. That's kinda why I'm always side-eyeing the statements that all characters are straight besides the main pairing. Like. Girl, they clearly aren't lol.
And yes, Qi Rong! I think I did an analysis in the past about how if you look at exactly what he says early on in the story, he's right about every single god except for two: Quan Yizhen and Shi Qingxuan, the two gods who are actually the most pure hearted and kind and good, but otherwise, on paper, seem not fit to be gods--Quan Yizhen because he doesn't care about pleasing others and the clear autism subtext, and Shi Qingxuan because his brother literally took his god-exams for him to get him ascended. Yet, these are the two best gods in a lot of ways, and the only ones Qi Rong can't read for filth because he's seen so few examples of actually good people in power.

The last thing you remembered was comfortably sitting in the backseat of your Uber ride, scrolling through your phone while what you think was Maroon 5 played over the radio. You’re not really sure but the song gave off that ‘good but strangely generic’ vibe that most Maroon 5 songs have.
Well as you were idly scrolling to fill the silence of the trip you glanced out of the car window to your right just in time to be blinded by headlights before pain shot through your skull, then in the same breath things went black. It felt like you were submerged in a thick viscous liquid, so thick your limbs couldn’t move without heavy strain. You didn’t need to breathe so you just floated there thoughtlessly before you saw a light some distance away.
You squinted and without thinking just started wading towards the light, but a voice stopped you. It wasn’t coming from the light, but instead it came from the inky dark behind you. It sounded like a man’s voice, an old man, like really old. It reminded you of your grandpa kind of, and he was calling for help. You glanced back at the light before turning back to the darkness and walked in what felt like slow motion towards it. At some point you noticed the darkness ever so slowly shifting into a scene. Like the black was fading to reveal a melting nighttime landscape.
The more you trudged forward the easier it got to move, thankfully. Soon the blurry splotches of green, brown, and tan started to solidify more until they actually began forming the details of a dirt path beneath your feet and a forest on either side of you. You continued until you were walking normally, just looking around the dark forest, realizing it should probably be pitch black since it seemed to be nighttime but there was a light right on the spot you were standing. You looked up and around you but saw no light source, though when you moved the light followed you. Then it hit you, the source of the light was you, which made no sense at all. You didn’t look like you were glowing but you couldn’t think of any other explanation for you being able to see in the 8 foot diameter around you.
“Can you hear me?”
The voice that’d been calling for help suddenly sounded much closer, causing you to flinch from surprise. They definitely sounded closer, so you raised your hands to cup around your mouth to yell back… but your stomach sank before your hands could reach your mouth. You stared at the hands before you, heart speeding up as you realized.. they were not your hands. You damn well knew what your hands looked like, you’d been looking at them for decades. But the ones attached to you now were pale, the fingers long, almost spindly with the nails clipped short.
Your breathing hitched as you watched the hands move as you willed them to, same as if they were your own. Your eyes traveled up your arms, thin unlike how they should be, but not weak either. You looked down and froze when you realized… your fucking boobs were gone. You could actually see your feet, neither of your lumps of fat blocking your view like they usually did. Your heartbeat was definitely faster now, panic settling in your veins like poison. What the fuck was going on? This wasn’t right. Why was your body not right? Were you dreaming? You had to be; the weird darkness and sudden forest and your body being wrong. It had to be some messed up dream.
“CC-aann yy-oouu hh-eeaaar mm-ee?”
This time the original voice, the male one, sounded spliced with another one, this one female. The more you listened the more the voice lost its male tone and solidified as a strictly female one. It was higher pitched and sounded really worried. You couldn’t tell who she was calling for, but it didn’t sound like your name. Though that thought slipped away when you noticed the scene around you washing away like ink from a canvas. Soon you were in darkness again and suddenly you needed to breathe, but it was so hard. You were struggling and closed your eyes to focus on making sure you were taking air in before letting it out, rinse and repeat.
You felt suffocated, like you needed to reach the surface for air.
Light spilled into your vision, causing you to close your eyes again. You could hear too many things at once, but they sounded muffled, like you were hearing them from inside a body of water. The clearer those sounds got the more you were pulled to consciousness. Each slow blink of your heavy eyelids showed you a different distorted view.
You blinked.
First you were looking up into the faces of a man and a woman, both  of whom doubled in your vision, making you feel almost nauseous. Them shuffling quickly around you wasn’t helping with this. The woman gave orders you couldn’t understand to the man who barked something to someone out of your field of view.
You blinked.
More people surrounding you, different ones this time, in scrubs and face masks. But their forms doubled and blurred, making your stomach roil unpleasantly. Blinding lights passing by above you one by one as you were pushed along on something, a gurney? Yeah probably. You were in a hospital then. The voices talking all around you mixed with the ringing in your ears, causing the churning in your stomach to become worse.
You blinked.
You felt weightless for a second before you were on something cold. You sucked in a breath, but it hurt when you did. You let the breath out with a weak moan. Suddenly bright light was in your face, making you wince and clench your eyes shut. Thankfully darkness overtook your vision again and the light disappeared.
You blinked.
The bright light was gone, thank fucking god. But you felt groggy, but in a different way than you had before. Before you could do much more than glance around the room you were in, a woman came into your view with a calm smile on her face. Why was she wearing what looked like blue sleep clothes? She warned you to stay calm and not panic, which honestly just made you worriedly wonder if there was a reason for you to panic, but she went on to explain that you currently have a tube down your throat to help you breathe. She said you needed to remain relaxed so you didn’t freak out and trigger your gag reflex and throw up. You swallowed around the tube anxiously but otherwise didn’t react, which the nurse took as a good thing.
“Do you remember how you got here, Mr. Afton?”
It took a full 3 seconds before you registered what she’d called you. Your eyebrows furrowed as you gave her a confused look, not sure what was going on? Then your ‘dream’ from before flashed in your memory. You glanced down at your prone body laying in the bed and noticed two things very clearly missing. You could feel your heart speeding up in your ribs, as a matter of fact you could hear it too, both beating in your ears and from the electric tone of the EKG machine you were hooked up to. You could feel your hands shaking as panic washed over you. This wasn’t a dream anymore, what happened to you? You got hit in a car, but why was your body different? This wasn’t making sense.
The nurse gave the now rapidly beeping machine a concerned look, asking you if you were in any pain. You closed your eyes and focused on breathing to calm yourself, missing how the nurse hurried over to the machines you were hooked up to in order to check on your vitals. You opened your eyes just in time to see her hook up a vial to the saline drip, half hearing her tell you that you’d be getting some morphine in a moment to ease any of your pain and help you calm down. She was right, hardly any time later you felt your eyelids droop as lethargy took over your aching body and soon you were drifting off to sleep again.
-0-
The second time you woke up you were alone in your hospital room. You took your time blinking the sleep from your eyes before checking out the room around you. It looked pretty normal.. at first glance. It was more rectangle shaped than square with your bed against the middle of one of the longer walls. Huge windows that took up most of the wall to your right with a matching sofa and recliner under them, giving the room a more relaxed, less sterile feel. And to your left were two doors on both the short wall and the longer wall across from you, one was open and showing the hallway while the other was closed and went to what you assumed was a bathroom. The walls were almost a pale salmon color, while the floor was… carpeted? That was weird. Actually the more you examined the room the odder it actually seemed. There were floral curtains on the window and a big ass box tv in the corner on a dresser showing some juice commercial.
And was that a fucking ashtray on the table next to you???
Okay, something was clearly fucking WRONG. You tried to recall the last thing you remembered, before the lady in the blue pjs. Bright lights.. people.. doctors most likely.. oh. You’d been in your Uber when you’d been t-boned by some asshole on your right. So that’s where shit went wrong. But that didn’t explain.. You looked down at the body you were attached to. The body that wasn’t yours. Your heart rate sped up and you knew it would pull someone in here so you closed your eyes and took deep calming breaths. It was okay, just breathe. Just breathe. In… Out... In... Out… Okay.
The machine’s beeping slowly evened out. You kept up your measured breathing even as you heard someone enter the room and call out ‘Mr. Afton?’ to you. You heard another voice pipe up and say ‘he’ was probably just having a dream. You’d never been super strict on the whole pronouns thing, but usually people just automatically used female ones with you. So hearing them use male ones was pretty surprising, though not impossible you guess. You listened as one checked your vitals and chatted amicably with the other. You heard them discussing you and you perked up to listen, curious what they’d have to say.
“Afton. Why does that name sound familiar?” One asked with a hum.
“He’s one of the men who opened that family diner out by 7th Street. The one with the singing robot bear for the kids. My niece loves that place, won’t shut up about it.” The other replied with a chuckle.
The first woman made an ‘ohhh’ sound of understanding before asking how in the world you’d gotten in the hospital. You listened numbly, the information not really sinking in that they were actually talking about you. Apparently “”you”” were side swiped pretty bad by some drunk driver and landed here as a result. You know that’s not how you got here but.. you think you might be in a coma. Why the fuck else would you be ‘Mr. Afton’ the guy who ‘made robot bears’. You’ll admit you just finished playing FNAF 4 again and watched one of the Game Theory videos on the series so maybe this is why your brain decided to do this for you while you were in a coma. Better than sitting in a black void you suppose…
“Oh! Turn the volume up, I wanna see this,” said the younger sounding woman.
You heard feet shuffling over to your bedside before the tv volume got louder. You could hear a man with a genial voice talking seriously, and when he spoke you couldn’t help but furrow your eyebrows in confusion.
“This is the CBS evening news with Walter Cronkite.”
You knew who that was… sorta. He was a famous news guy, at least that’s what you’d gathered from that movie Bruce Almighty, where Jim Carrey gets all of God’s powers. He seemed to have a lot of respect for Walter Cronkite, enough to look up to him as inspiration and keep a framed photo of him at work. But you’re pretty sure Walter Cronkite was dead now, or maybe he was just retired? He was one or both of those, so why was he on tv? Maybe this was just your brain messing with you, like you’d figured before. If you’re in a coma then yeah your brain might have picked him to be on the news because it remembered him being a ‘news guy’. That and because.. you didn’t really know any other people in the news field.
You were so lost in thought that you didn’t notice falling back asleep.

A pair of lips belonging to a rather sweaty but familiar face slowly inched close to the elderly man attempting to read a magazine whilst sitting on the sofa, riddled with cat hair. Little Claude Jr. Took this opportunity to use Billy as a ladder to easily access the cozy sitting place: clawing his way up his legs and back before falling off his shoulder with a 'pomf'.
"Ohhh, my pretty.. pretty piglet... would- mheheh... would you be Quite Interested-" he emphasized in a british accent, "in giving my- pfft." The old man snorted, simply unable to finish his sentence without laughing at it himself; Elouise was beginning to smirk as well but trying to keep his face straight.
"My..." again, he couldn't fully finish what he wanted to say without wheezing and breaking into a giggle fit, which was starting to contaminate the other.
"Ah-hass hair-" he snorted inbetween giggles, which intensified by the moment "g-giving my ass hair braids..." he finally managed to laugh out, now fully leaning into the sofa for support as he was beginning to crack, with his partner not too far off either as his grip on the magazine was becoming increasingly shakier as he had lost all focus the more the other spoke, he eventually just had to put it down to properly allow himself a laugh.
'You two degenerates.' Spoke Maxwell condescendingly from within the headspace,
'We are!' Barked back Elis in the headspace as he kept laughing while fronting.
"Yy...you stupid bitch-" Elis breathed in-between gasps of air, attempting to compose himself (and doing a not-so great job at it). He made the mistake of speaking out loud instead of the usual inner-talking, as he meant those words for his nosy headmate but, well.
Of course, Billy thought those words were meant to refer to him. Oh, he wanted to play tough? It was on.
"Ohhhh..." said he in an exaggerated 'shocked' tone. "Am I, now? Ya cunt." He chuckled, Elis tried to explain his mistake on the matter, but it was too late! Now the Moaner's face inched closer to the other's. The magazine had lost all the attention it previously basked on as it carelessly got dropped on the floor as the man welcomed the other crawling his way into the sofa from behind, into his embrace.
"You..." Billy growled, though his tone was playful, "you are a filthy cunt! Filthy! Cocksucker!" His wording was obscene, one could even say aggressive, but his tone was endearing and jolly.
It was no use arguing with him about his innocence now. He had initiated another swear-fight and Billy would not be satisfied until it was over.
"And you are a dickhead!! Pussy! Ass-licker!" Elis barked back, his tone ever so slightly raising. He didn't often yell or speak loudly at all in constrast to Billy, whom would scream, sing, make noises and overall loudly talk.
It was somewhat strange to see, yes. An elderly couple practically insulting eachother lovingly as they...? Aggressively cuddled? Wrestled? It tended to be complex. Both of them enjoyed physical and sensory overstimulation- and this went beyond any sexual aspects. It was funny in a way- neither could handle being overwhelmed while out in public, but the moment it was just the two of them causing that overwhelming feeling again by practically play-fighting, it felt nice. Tiring afterwards, but nice.
Meanwhile, Claude Jr. Made it his personal mission now to remain seated in his rightful spot. No matter how much these two geriatrics he called dads brawled on his cozy couch.
No sir. He was not getting out of this sofa.

untitled xiaoyang fic #2, ~900 words, rated T
gender/sex swap au (barely), ranma 1/2 inspired (barely .) au where yy would have c cups. very silly
For all things considered, Yangyang thought he had kind of gotten the sweet end of the deal.
Bro’s trip to the countryside: cheap booze (sweet), cheaper weed (SWEET), beautiful scenery and the strengthening bond between him and the homie Guanheng (nice, or whatever), and Guanheng even let him drive his car the entire way over.
Then there was the whole falling into the cursed hot springs on a tour thing (it’s over).
But neither of them had drowned at least, so they shook it off well enough until back at the inn, where Yangyang took the shower first and discovered the cursed part of the whole thing.
“Okay, wait,” Guanheng stammered out, eyes covered very gentlemanly, actually. “Lemme go find out what I got then real quick.” And in the timespan between this and a mid-sized panda floundering out of the bathroom, Yangyang checked out his new “cursed” form in the mirror and came to the conclusion: Girl-him was kind of hot (we’re so back?).
-
His internal gloating only lasted until the end of the trip however. The two of them got back home to the city and Guanheng almost immediately flipped the whole turning-into-a-panda-with-cold-water thing into a lucrative at-home photo-op business while Yangyang got slapped with an ultimatum from his parents— reduced rent on an apartment, courtesy of them, on the following conditions:
1) 3.0 GPA at uni minimum.
2) Part-time job on top of that.
3) Dad’s old college roommate’s son’s gotta be his roommate now.
That’s how he got stuck living with Xiao Dejun, who, for someone who’s apparently stuck in the same boat as Yangyang with limited housing options outside of this, has acted like he’d rather die than ever have to interact with his new roomie beyond Venmo-ing his half of rent every end of the month.
Yet even then, it could be worse. Having something of a near-death experience on vacation opened Yangyang’s eyes to a new lease on life. He’s got to get his shit together. He’s pulled his GPA up already from library and study hall stints in-between his not one, but two part-time jobs: the guy taking Guanheng Panda’s pics for Instagram, and the girl passing out club promo flyers at the mall.
He even passed out a flier to Dejun today, to which Dejun turned up his nose and narrowed his eyes, pointedly away from Yangyang’s exposed cleavage. What a gentleman.
“Don’t do that again,” Dejun says in lieu of hey, or how are you even, when he gets back to the apartment later in the evening.
“God Dejun, you’re so— sex-negative or whatever,” Yangyang swings his legs up off the back of the couch, long as they are in guy-form too. He stifles back the giggle when Dejun pointedly looks away again and sits up-right for the lecture he’ll take in stride as penance. It is way too fun to fuck around with Dejun in this way. “See, I pay attention in Gender and Sexuality studies too.” Yangyang grins.
“I am not,” Dejun puffs out his chest— he’s very proud of the steady B he has in that class. “I just know you only approached me to mess around with me. Quit it.”
“I think you wouldn’t even be this bothered by it to begin with if you just gave in to the tension you have with her.” Yangyang shrugs.
“With you.”
“Me?” Yangyang gasps, a demure hand on his chest.
“That’s not— there’s no tension, and she is you—!” Yangyang reaches over with a pat on Dejun’s shoulder as a truce. No more messing with him tonight. Dejun’s red-face and sputtering still but he seems to accept it once he quiets down.
Dejun actually letting Yangyang touch him in any way at all has been a recent development, an improvement on things. It’s clearly not dependent on whatever form either, as Yangyang had once suspected. Dejun had just seemed so…put off by Yangyang essence entirely, from the get-go.
Yangyang can’t say it didn’t hurt his feelings a bit. He wasn’t too thrilled with the living arrangement thrust upon them three months ago either. But there had been something about Dejun anyway, that didn’t make Yangyang want to retreat into an introverted little corner, tail between his legs.
When Yangyang comes out of the shower a little later, back in boy-form, to a steaming bowl of stew left on the kitchen table, the feeling squeezes somewhere in his chest, just a little.
“Dejun, let’s play something together,” Yangyang calls out from the kitchen sink, washing up.
“Don’t get me wet— stop.” Dejun grumbles at Yangyang’s ever-widening grin, shaking out his shaggy wet hair. He hands him a Switch controller anyway. This is definitely the closest Yangyang gets to Dejun, at this point, a quivering little space between their shoulders as they play Mario Kart together now on the couch, occasionally.
It’s been weighing on Yangyang a bit lately, the physicality of that space. Guy or girl, Dejun’s eyes flick away. From annoyance at first, he knew. But now, from just barely catching dark eyes, framed with heavy lashes, skimming across damp skin, the flushed column of Yangyang’s neck?
-
“Dude, you’re actually doing me such a solid right now.” Yangyang jumps a little, just to let them jiggle, just a little. There’s certain things shifting between them lately in their small little apartment, he knows, but. Old habits die hard, what can he say? “They check the trashcans to see if I’ve been dumping these things out.”
“Shut up,” Dejun responds, red-faced, taking the flyer anyway.

ok but kitty!yy in snuggle mode.. the purrs and nuzzling alone is so adorable but consider also... the kneading 🥺 but he'll already be denying it if you try telling any of your other friends how sweet he's being. but anyone who knows him already knows that he's equal parts sweet babie and relentless imp from hell.
the kneading 🥺
omg because he totally would once he gets super comfy with you. like imagine you're coming down after another round of sex one night. you had finished a joint a while before, but neither of you want to move to get more weed. besides, you both feel high enough, letting the afterglow of great sex mingle with that familiar haze to create a feeling of subtle euphoria. you both just pull the blankets up, basking in the warm embrace and the soft blue lighting from the leds. he doesn't even think about it when he snuggles with you, since he's done it a bunch of times already, and your arms automatically wrap around him. you’re already smiling, as you love the feeling of his body against yours, loving the warmth and comfort you feel. you stroke the fur of his ears, listening to his contented purrs moreso than the music that plays softly in the background. after a while, his hands come up to your boobs and he starts gently squeezing and fondling them with an almost methodical approach, nuzzling your neck all the while. while it is really cute and does feel really nice, he's also never done that before, which prompts you to ask the question.
"what are you doing?" you mumble softly, raising a brow.
he halts, hands still splayed out over your boobs, and he looks up shyly, "oh, nothing. i can stop if you want."
"no no, it felt nice. you've just never done that before, that's all." you snuggle against him more, letting him know that it's ok, "but it's nice."
"oh i was-" he cuts himself off, bashfulness fully setting in, "i-i was kneading."
"what's that?"
he murmurs an explanation as he rests his face between your boobs, "the way i was just touching you, that's called kneading. we do that when we're really cozy sometimes."
saying it out loud only makes him shyer, and he ducks his head to avoid your gaze. he can be a touchy guy from time to time, but he never kneads anything but his own pillow, let alone another person. not until now, that is.
"it's cute, and it feels nice." you tell him, rubbing the tender spot behind his ear with gentle fingertips, "you can keep going if you want."
elated, he purrs louder as he starts kneading again, his touch firmer and more assured. feeling him massage your boobs like this is fucking heavenly, giving you the perfect amount of sensation as you enjoy the rest of your high. you hum in content and hold him close, absently toying with the pink strands of his hair. he in turn presses against you, nosing at your neck. he lets his lips brush over your skin, right where your neck meets your shoulder, just enough to make you moan softly. his lips trail down to your chest, he pressed kisses all along your boobs, all over the flesh his hands aren't currently fondling. you run your fingers through his hair, petting him as he slowly toys with your boobs. neither of you are up for another round, but it's still nice to touch and kiss each other like this, and share this moment of intimacy and connection. you never want to leave his bed, and you never want to leave his side, and the way he nuzzles you in an attempt to get impossibly closer tells you he feels the same way.
Edit: k I was half sleep when I wrote this so I'm gonna rewrite it 😤 it'll be in a whole new post

Quarterly Debut Review: Q2 2024
Quarterly Debut Reviews are a supplementary series to my biannual Periodic Rookie Group Reports, which are published quarterly. Each installment covers three rookie groups that debuted over the past three months. For the sixth installment, I covered Triple iz (April), TOZ (May), and Crystal (Future Idol Asia) (June).
Tumblr media
April / Triple iz Debut: April 8, 2024 Debut Song: “Halla”
Call me Lettuce90. That is what ifland, SK Telecom’s social metaverse application, dubbed my avatar, a guy sporting a gray overcoat and gray pants with a gray beard and gray undercut. Although I could have changed both, as avatar customization is billed as a “feature, I did neither. I had not downloaded the app to talk to other users’ avatars or decorate the customizable 3d virtual space which in the parlance of the app is called a “room” or participate in k-pop karaoke or any of the other activities, but in the name of research. I wanted to get to know the self-described multinational metaverse girl group Triple iz and considering that they had been formed to promote the app, this seemed like a good place to start.
That I had to download the app to get to know the group is by design. Triple Iz’s whole raison d’etre is to attract new users through incentives and promotions tied to ifland. As of now, this has meant a pre-debut reality show Road to Debut, which although promoted on their official YouTube and Instagram, was only available on the app.[1] The same goes for their debut XR showcase, Global Fan Live show, and weekly news show “Weekly Izland News”, which takes place every Thursday in their official room.
I dropped into one of these weekly shows on a Thursday in early May, my avatar materializing on a bench on a peachy pink island, floating in a purple and pink sky dotted with puffy clouds, the planet Saturn, and rainbow tracks. Navigating around oversized candy pieces, scaled-down windmills, and banners with the group’s images, I joined the dozen other attendees including two whose outfits identified themselves as staff from the English language news site kpopmap (their website describes them as Triple iz’s Official Media Partner).[2][3] We stood in front of a large screen where the two MCs, RaRa and Serri, who wore tops that said ‘Triple iz,’ used to host the show. As their voices were piped in, the screen changed in tandem with the segments, including a quiz. Attendees could answer questions through the chat function, their answers appearing over their avatars’ heads, who are otherwise stationary.
In Kpopmap’s words, the show was supposed to be a “hangout sesh” but felt more like an awkward school assembly, lasting around a half hour. After that, the crowd thinned out as people moved to other “rooms” or onto other activities, like using their avatar to cover the choreography of the group’s song, or like me, logged off. I never went to another of their Weekly Shows and not long ago I deleted the app off my phone. While Triple Iz may have convinced me to try out the app, no virtual fan cafe, contest, or giveaway (all offered through the app) offered a compelling reason to stay.

May / TOZ Debut: September 27, 2023 / May 2, 2024 Debut Song: “Magic Hour”/ “Nu Shoes”
Whether or not my choosing the boy group TOZ for my May blurb violates the spirit of this series hinges on one date – that of their debut. I considered their official debut to be September 27, 2023, when they simultaneously released their mini album Flare in Japan and Korea. My belief in this date is not entirely unwarranted. A Korea JoongAng Daily article published on September 7, 2023, titled “Boys Planet's four contestants to debut as TOZ with 'Flare'” explicitly describes the release as their debut,
The four-member band will make its debut under YY Entertainment on Sept. 27 with the album "Flare," a title "symbolizing the flare to mark the beginning of TOZ," according to the agency.
YY Entertainment would beg to differ. When teasing TOZ’s new mini album TO MY NEW FRIENDS, they announced that as their first Korean mini album, it would mark their Korean debut. This implies that their previous debut referred solely to their debut in Japan and that their debut date, according to their label, is May 4, 2024.[4]
In my ten-plus years of tracking Rookies, this is not the first time I have encountered the problem of determining a debut, but it has become more common in the last few years. Previously, a debut date corresponded to a group’s first release or initial music show appearance, usually in Korea, that no longer holds. Now, between extended pre-debut rollouts that can last months, previously debuted and independent groups “re-debuting” under labels, individual units of larger groups promoting independently, and international promotions a debut date is a moving target, one untethered from a group’s history.
In other words, entertainment agencies stretched the concept of the debut until it broke. Today, freed from any pretense of convention, if an agency chooses, a group could have multiple debuts like TOZ.  unlike TOZ, whose double debut is a strategic move. With the group’s initial introduction, less than four months after Haruto and Anthonny had joined the label, YY Entertainment tried to capitalize on the member’s association with Mnet’s Boy’s Planet, in which all four members had participated and concluded five months before their debut. Then, marketing their first Korean mini album as a “debut,” not a comeback, lends it the sheen of a traditional debut when the audience’s lack of familiarity with a group is not yet a detriment but an opportunity, a chance for a group to make themselves known.

June / Crystal Debut: June 14, 2024 Debut Song: “Dreams Come True”
Rainbow E&M fell one group short of their ambitious goal to debut one new group a month for the first six months of the year. While they debuted at least one new group in January (Flora), February (Bluebell), and April and two groups in March (Heimish and Pearlys) and June (Ivory and Crystal), they did not debut a new group in May.
This gap in an otherwise prodigious six months could result from their focus being elsewhere, like their third annual showcase. Held on June 10th at the World K-Pop Center in Seoul, the showcase, as I have written before, is the fulcrum of the project, the point around which the endeavor is organized. Rainbow E&M recruits participants, organizes them into groups, and gives them a “debut” song and video so that they can perform them at their showcase.
Alternatively, or perhaps simultaneously, this gap may also indicate a problem I began to suspect last year when they debuted multiple groups of members from other previously debuted Future Idol Asia groups. That is the project has been struggling to recruit new participants, a problem not unique to them. An August 2023 Korea JoongAng Daily article reported that entertainment agencies are struggling to find trainees. Data backs up this finding. According to Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)’s 2023 Pop Culture & Arts Industry Survey, the number of trainees working for agencies decreased between 2020 and 2022, going from 1,895 to 1,170.
This presents a catch-22 for Rainbow E&M. While such a shortage would make their service all the more indispensable to agencies, they would have to be able to find potential trainees, which would be difficult due to the shortage. Without participants for their project, the primary means of promoting their project, like debuting new groups and their showcase, also become more difficult, further exacerbating their recruitment challenge.
It makes sense then that Future Idol Asia has resorted to some creative accounting to pad their numbers. For example, at their recent showcase, most of the groups were not those they had debuted between their third and fourth showcase but “trainee” groups. Unlike the typical Future Idol Asia group, these groups perform not original songs but covers. Their introductions are rougher, and their performances are less polished. They are far from showcase-ready, but at the same time, they are necessary components for its success. Without them, the showcase would be noticeably shorter and smaller, signaling to the audience and potential recruits that the project is struggling. By including these groups though in a bid to reverse their struggle, they can at least create the illusion that the opposite is true.
Footnotes
[1] Post-debut, full episodes from the group's pre-debut reality show were uploaded to their official YouTube page.
[2] Not long after I attended “Weekly Izland News”, Kpopmap instituted a subscription model, hiding most of their articles behind a paywall. As a result, I cannot link to many of their articles on the group and ifland I used for research while writing this blurb.
[3] According to an article on Kpopmap (again, accessed pre-subscription change), members of Kpopmap’s staff join the show every week to “hang out with fans, take ideas and suggestions for future contents, ask for fans’ opinions, swoon over Triple iz, and more.”
[4] For my own purposes, TOZ will be considered a 2023 Rookie Group Debut. This will be reflected in the numbers for Rookie Reports No. 22 through No. 24.

What Are YY Chromosomes?

27 May 2023 — The 23rd pair of chromosomes are known as the sex chromosomes, because they decide if you will be born male or female.
Although genetics are hereditary, a phenomenon in genetic alterations occurs when male babies receive an extra Y chromosome in each of their cells, resulting in an XYY combination. The syndrome is commonly known as Jacob’s syndrome, Superman syndrome, XYY karyotype, XYY syndrome, YY syndrome, and 46,XY/47,XYY mosaicism. The genetic alteration occurs in one out of 1,000 male babies and can be traced back 100,000 years to one male ancestor.
What Causes YY Chromosomes to Occur?
The usual number of chromosomes inside every cell of your body is 46 total chromosomes, or 23 pairs. You inherit half of your chromosomes from your biological mother, and the other half from your biological father.
The first 22 pairs of chromosomes are called autosomes. The 23rd pair of chromosomes are known as the sex chromosomes, because they decide if you will be born male or female. Females have two X chromosomes, while males have one X and one Y chromosome.
The Superman syndrome occurs when males receive an extra Y chromosome at conception, creating an XYY combination. ‌This results in a male baby born with the XYY syndrome, which is a random occurrence due to the sperm cell’s formation before conception occurs.‌
Known as nondisjunction, this is an error in the sperm cell’s division. The resulting child will have an extra Y chromosome in every cell of his body. However, it’s not a hereditary trait — fathers with XYY chromosomes don’t pass on this syndrome to their sons.
What Are the Physical Characteristics of YY Chromosomes?
The physical characteristics in a person with an extra Y chromosome have broad variations. It’s important to remember that not all boys born with XYY syndrome will demonstrate observable differences. How your physical body functions is a result of the instructions encoded in your genes. You have an inherently unique genetic makeup that creates your genotype.‌
Your genotype combines with environmental factors to determine your physical body structure and function known as the phenotype. The entire embodiment of a full set of chromosomes results in your karyotype.
