Idk if this is me wildly misinterpreting the manga, but I thought Mayuri's attitude towards Nemuri was a positive step for their characters. Like he isn't abusive to her like he was with Nemu, he isn't controlling her every little movement or denying her interests. He gave her her own surname because he recognises that Nemuri is her own person and corrects her like a parent would when she gets too loud instead of tearing her down like he would have before. Idk I thought it was sweet?

I don’t think Mayuri’s treatment of Nemuri is bad and I agree it’s positive for Nemuri. It’s been a while since I’ve talked about it but definitely, Mayuri is a calmer creature after TYBW.

But personally, after reading through Pernida vs Mayuri, it doesn’t feel like Mayuri is treating Nemuri well because he has learned the lesson that she’s a person who deserves respect. But because he’s decided to treat her as something replaceable; he woke up and realized she’s an experiment and NOT a person. His view of Nemu was that she was a special person and his greatest accomplishment. His dream. And he never treated her well.

Like, the outcome is great for Nemuri. But I think it’s giving Mayuri way more credit than he’s due that he’s suddenly treating Nemuri more mildly because he respects her and has realized it’s not okay to be abusive/is giving Nemuri autonomy from a place of personal care. Nemuri has the same kind of last name Nemu did before Mayuri was sure she would survive past childhood, for instance. Nemu’s was Nanago before he changed it. It’s still just a number. He never bothered to give Nemuri an actual surname.

I guess to say it in a condensed way, I don’t think his improved treatment of Nemuri comes from a place of positive personal growth.

It's not in him to celebrate in the traditional sense. His own birthday had long since lost meaning, only found again with each new birth, each miracle of life. And his latest stands before him, vibrant and thrumming with potential. There won't be any gifts this year or the next or the next, nothing so tangible. Nemuri's eyes brighten in curiosity. She had so many questions about Nemuri Nanago! She'd already read all she could find on her from their father's own research to personal things like diaries she'd found. But her unquenchable thirst for knowledge was never truly satisfied. Yet she knew her big sister was a sensitive for Mayuri.

"Do you think she'd like the story Tale of the Bamboo Cutter? She reminds me of the moon and therefore makes me think of Princess Kaguya! And I wanna read the story to the stars and moon for her tonight."

I was reading translations for the bleach novel three years after the Great War. And it's filling in gaps that were left open in the original story so I'm just putting this here for my own reference. Nanao wanted to be put in the Kido corps, but due to her status as Head librarian in school, a title given to those who read over a thousand books, Lisa took interest in her and requested she be brought to the eighth division. Shihoin Yoruichi was offered the position of the Eighth Division captain, and if she were to say no, she would have to teach at the Shino Academy. She chose the Academy. The Omaeda's jewel shop get their products from Komamura's werewolf clan. Rose plays many different types of instruments. Him and Yoruichi are good friends. Kira found it annoying at first, but grew accustomed to it when he found it made him work more efficiently. Kotetsu Isane was put as captain immediately after the war as they needed a healing expert. She was so thrown off by it when Kyoraku gave her the paperwork for her promotion, but immediately asked if her sister would become her lieutenant, so they could console each other after both losing great mentors. Hirako refers to hinamori as his daughter and often urges her to play hooky. Hinamori inherited unohana's malice-stare. Kuchiki Byakuya threw a good luck party for abarai and rukia's marriage announcement party. He ordered all their clothing and told Renji to take care of her. Komamura became full wolf after using his human transformation technique. He lives on the outskirts of the 7th division and Iba occasionally visited him, but he cannot understand him. Iba promotes ieuma, the previous 3rd seat of the 4th division as his lieutenant, and he feels like Iba takes advantage of him because he overtrains and then asks Ieuma to heal him. The entire division gets inspired by this and he is forced to heal them as well. Iba reported that Komamura was killed in action, and although the other captains can barely feel Komamura, they all act as though he has been KIA. Two werewolf children from Komamura's clan came to the 7th division to become shinigami. Iba adopted them with guide from Komamura. Lisa was placed as captain six months after the war. She first wanted Nanao as her lieutenant, but when Kyoraku refused, her second choice was Ieuma, the 3rd seat of the 4th division. But when Iba took him, she wanted Yumichika, then asked about Hanataro. She said her third seat wasn't someone to be promoted. Mashiro and Kensei defended the Shino Academy from the Soldat during the war, protecting the students but unable to defend the teachers. Everyone knows about Hitsugaya's second Bankai form. Hitsugaya also now knows that his former captain is ichigo's dad. With Yachiru gone, the Shinigami women's association is disbanded, but Kotetsu reinstates it by having all the other women visit Hachigo. Hachigo is infused with Nanago's brain. So she has her memories and manners. Three years after the war, Kotetsu is said to have seen her and she politely nodded and bowed to her. Kurotsuchi views Nemuri and Kira in high regards as being his greatest achievements. Shiba Ganju plays pretend with the children of the rukongai based on ukitake's story he wrote in the Seireitei communication. He's sad that it will forever go unfinished, and it seems to be a coping mechanism as he felt like he knew ukitake when his brother would come home after working with him and tell him all about how great he was. I could honestly do without the romantic stuff, but it's so nice getting some of the blanks filled in with that terrible ending!!
