Kirkwall, the City of Ruins

I can finally share with you my contribution for the @afterkirkwall​ zine! I am really proud of this one and very excited to share it with everyone. This is a Carver-centric fic focusing on his time as a Templar following the Chantry explosion.

Thank you @laugan-art​ for putting this project together and for all your hard work. I am infinitely grateful to have been a part of this amongst so many talented artists and writers.

There is a giant hole in Hightown where the Chantry once stood. The entire neighbourhood is black with lasting scorch marks. Ashes are still drifting through the wind like dark snowflakes, carrying with them the sins of humankind. People say the place is haunted. They say the ghost of Grand Cleric Elthina roams the ground at night to exact revenge on the unrighteous, and that's why the templars need to keep a close watch over this blasted place. It's a load of crap, Carver knows this. He and the other soldiers have been stationed here to stop civilians from getting too close to the ruins, that much is true, but only because they want to prevent people from falling into the deep dark pit. 

Yet, something about this place feels wrong to him, unnerving. It's too cold, too silent in spite of the small crowd of faithful who still gather in front of the shattered stairs to offer tears and prayers. Shaking his shoulders to regain his composure, Carver reminds himself that this is still a better position than guarding the Gallows and Meredith's grotesque remains. The thought alone makes him shudder. 

The Gallows… Now that is what a haunted place looks like. The Veil has grown so thin over there that the templars have to fend off demons almost every week. It once housed hundreds of mages: men, women, children… Some managed to escape thanks to the Champion’s intervention. Most, however, did not. And it is now the templars’ duty to remove their twisted corpses from the ancient prison, a long and gruesome task that many find unbearable. Guilt tears at their conscience. It sits in the pit of their stomachs like bad seafood, going so far as to make some of them physically ill. As it should, Carver thinks. It's the ones who don't shudder at the sight of dead children that terrify him the most.

It’s true, mostly because I tend to wait until they are well developed to properly do anything with them, which doesn’t happen all that often. So consider this a formal introduction to my current OCs :)

Sad Mages Worldstate

It’s probably the one I talk about the most. It’s the most developed worldstate, with the most developed OCs and I’ve written a lot of fics about them.

The Warden: Ana Surana [Tag | Complete bio | Fanfictions]

pairings: Ana x Daylen Amell (friends with benefits), Ana x Alistair (DAO romance), Ana x Carver (current pairing, now married) + I occasionally throw Isabela into the mix because reasons.

Born in the Gallows and taken to an orphanage in Highever until her magic manifested.

Grew up close to Anders, Jowan, Amell and (to a lesser extent) Finn.

Had a baby that she was forced to give to the Chantry.

Main DAO choices include: romancing Alistair, getting her heart broken after making him king, stupidly refusing to do Morrigan’s ritual and watching him sacrifice his life for her.

Later she starts dating Carver (whom she actually met at Ostagar where they had a brief fling before the Battle).

Takes part in the Mage Underground and helps Anders build his bomb.

Starts hearing the Calling shortly before DAI.

Is Hawke’s contact during HLtA.

The Champion: Alwyn Hawke [Tag | Complete bio | Fanfictions]

Carver becomes a warden.

Breaks up with Anders after the Chantry explosion, wishing he’d trusted him enough to share his plan with him. They do get back together later on.

Is the first one to learn about Ana hearing the Calling.

Stays behind in the Fade during HLtA, but eventually finds a way out.

He was found by Inquisition scouts in the Western Approach, suffering from amnesia.

Later falls in love with Rylen.

Orlesian who grew up in Ferelden during the occupation.

Was a close friend of Malcolm Hawke.

Had her baby (Ana) taken by the Chantry. Later escaped.

Hates the Chantry.

Attends the Conclave in the hopes that Ana might be there.

Starts sleeping with Samson after his capture because he basically said fuck the Chantry to her face and it turned her on.

Hardened Leliana becomes Divine.

Is Ana’s daughter. She got her out of the orphanage after the Blight (thanks, Leliana).

Her father is Daylen Amell. Carver adopted her when he married her mama.

Is 18 as of Trespasser.

Second Chances Worldstate

This one started off as an AU for a fic starring Ana and Alistair which is why these two worldstates are so similar. The point of divergence is that Jowan went to Amell for help instead of Ana for some reason.

The Warden: Daylen Amell [Tag | Fanfictions]

pairings: Day x Ana (friends with benefits), Day x Morrigan (DAO romance and while I did consider for a while not having him follow her through the eluvian, I changed my mind. There’s too much growth potential.)

His father was Maurevar Carver, because I say so.

Main DAO choices include: Sparing Loghain, Alistair becoming a drunk, not doing Morrigan’s ritual because he can just throw Loghain at the Archdemon (which he did).

Helps Ana get their daughter out of the Kirkwall orphanage. Bails on them right afterwards.

Does follow Morrigan through the eluvian and actually ends up being a decent dad to Kieran.

Does not become Ferelden’s Warden-Commander.

The Champion: Alwyn Hawke (yes, again)

Like I said, this was originally an AU, so it made sense to keep the same Hawke. There are quite a few differences, however.

pairings: none.

Does not bring Anders to the Deep Roads. Carver dies.

Suffers from severe depression afterwards.

Goes from purple to full blue after Leandra’s death.

Stays behind in the Fade. Probably won’t make it out in this worldstate.

The Inquisitor: Asaara Adaar [Tag | Fanfictions]

pairings: Asaara x Cullen (starts before DAI, now married).

Meets Cullen shortly before the Chantry explosion. They fall in love.

Not going into too much details because it will be part of Second Chances’ main story.

Built a handheld cannon. It’s clunky, not very accurate and is prone to misfire. In other words, it still needs a lot of work.

Varric thinks she’s adorable so he made her his personal bodyguard.

Angry Dalish Worldstate

The Warden: Shaelyn Mahariel [Tag | Fanfictions]

pairings: Lyn x Tamlen (Origin), Lyn x Bethany, (considering Lyn x Alistair between DA2 and DAI but even that might be too cruel.)

Doesn’t want to be a warden.

DAO choices include: Alistair remaining with the wardens because he doesn’t want to be king.

No in-game romance, she was too heartbroken after losing Tamlen.

Eventually starts dating Bethany.

Travels to the Free Marches after the death of her clan to kill the man responsible.

Almost dies in the resulting fight against Hawke (thank the Creators Anders was there).

Goes home and confesses to Bethany that she almost killed her brother and that she would have done it had he not been so badass. They break up.

The two of them reconcile post-DAI, after Hawke and Merrill’s wedding.

The Champion: Kris Hawke [Tag]

pairings: Kris x Merrill (now married).

Blue Hawke.

Sadly couldn’t save Merrill’s clan.

Didn’t want to hurt Lyn that badly during their fight, he was just defending himself. Deeply regrets it afterwards.

The Inquisitor: no one specific yet, but likely a Lavellan romancing Solas.

Alistair stays behind in the Fade.

Elves in Luuuuv Worldstate

The Warden: Kallian Tabris [Tag | Fanfictions]

pairings: Tabs x Alistair (DAO romance)

Probably the most canon-compliant OC.

Main DAO choices include: making Alistair king with Anora as queen and becoming his mistress.

Madly in love.

Will have a happy ending.

No Hawke or Inquisitor yet.

Homecoming Worldstate

The Warden: Elaine Cousland [Tag]

pairings: Elle x Nathaniel (pre-DAO, now ex-husband), Elle x Leliana (DAO romance), Elle x Sebastian (current).

Was BFF with Anora during their childhood.

Actually met Sebastian before he was sent to the Chantry. The two of them had similar lifestyles back then, so when Elle visited Starkhaven with her father, the two of them developed a rivalry of sorts in their romantic pursuits (think Merteuil and Valmont, but a lot more light-hearted). They do spend one night together after learning that he is going to be sent to the Chantry.

Eventually fell in love and married Nate. They kept their relationship a secret, however. They divorced after the Blight.

Main DAO choices include: romancing Leliana, making Alistair king with Anora as queen, sparing Loghain and performing the ritual.

Her relationship with Leliana didn’t survive the distance.

Leaves the Wardens after the Chantry explosion and basically goes on the run from everyone because she feels responsible for what happened.

Helps Sebastian reclaim his throne. They fall in love. (I’m currently writing a fic about this, actually)

Still unsure about her DAI fate. Either she replaces Hawke in HLtA and stays behind in the Fade, or she becomes Inquisitor.

The Champion: Violetta Hawke [Tag | Fanfictions]

pairings: Letta x Isabela (DA2 romance).

Yes, she was totally named after Violette.

Is Kris’ sister.

Carver becomes a Templar.

Spared Anders.

Sails into the sunset with Isabela.

DAI fate will depend on what I decide to do with Elle.

The Inquisitor: no one yet.

Loghain survives HLtA.

I am considering having Neriah (yes, again) be the Herald with someone else as Inquisitor since she’s only a kid. In this worldstate, she grew up in Kirkwall’s orphanage before being taken to the Gallows. She escapes the massacre and Carver eventually takes her under his wing.

I'm planning to have two additional worldstates (I want one per warden origin). One called "Happy Dwarves" with a male Brosca romancing Zevran and one called "Dead Heroes" with a male Aeducan romancing Leliana (and probably Alwyn again, idk). I also have a couple of Cadashes that I want to put somewhere, a woman romancing Josie and a man romancing Divine Cassandra. Idk yet if they'll be Inquisitors or if I'll just add them to one of the existing worldstates. Odds are one will be Inquisitor while the other just tags along.

I probably missed a few things here and there, but that’s basically the gist of it. Thanks to anyone who actually stuck to the end, lmao.

She sees him before he sees her, in the courtyard, entertaining the children they rescued months ago from the Gallows. They’re playing a game of hide and seek and Ana is tempted to slip behind a pillar to surprise him. She knows it’s foolish, with the darkspawn taint coursing through their veins, he would spot her before she could even make it halfway through the courtyard (and perhaps he already did sense her presence), but the idea is alluring.

Neriah, her sweet daughter, is the first to notice her. Maker, how she’s missed her. The twelve-year-old charges towards her like an overexcited mabari and jumps into her arms despite being quite a few inches taller than her mother. The other kids soon follow her example, albeit with a little more restraint (save perhaps for little Stevie who, at the top of his five years, hasn’t learned restraint yet).

“Did you bring anything back from Orlais?” Riah asks excitedly.

“Cheese! Lots of gross stinky cheeses!” She punctuates her answer with a few tickles directed at the nearest child.

Carver stays in the background, waiting patiently for the excitement to settle down. As the children make a little room for him, he finally walks up to her and wraps his arms around her with a smile.

“What about me? Did you get me anything?”

Standing on the tip of her toes, Ana plants a soft kiss on his plush lips, which Carver is quick to deepen. The rise of a few “eww” from the younger kids and a couple of “get a room, you two” from the older ones is enough to bring them back to reality. Carver chuckles, but he keeps his arms firmly set around her waist and it isn’t long before the children start dispersing again. Ana pulls him into a strong hug. Maker, she missed him so much.

“Actually, I did get something special just for you,” she purrs.

“Is it more cheese?” he teases her.

“It’s a little something I can’t show in front of the children.”

It takes a moment for the innuendo to sink in. Then, a smile stretches wide across his face. His blue eyes shine with desire. Maker, it shouldn’t be allowed to be this handsome.

“Well, someone else can take care of the kids. My brother must have awakened from his nap by now.”

Lifting an eyebrow, Ana is about to protest (she’s got things to do and people to see, after all) when Carver slides a hand behind her legs and sweeps her off her feet. She giggles as he kisses her again before carrying her back to their bedroom.

really like the idea of neriah being the herald of andraste in the homecoming worldstate (elle’s worldstate), with someone else being inquisitor  (either elle or hawke depending on whether or not i decide to switch their places during hlta) because she’s only 14/15 at the start of DAI. main problem, though, is that while i can make a case of why she might tag along on some of the main quests, i can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would take her to adamant.

Fire at the Heart of the World

Chapter 5

Read on AO3 [chapter 1 | chapter 2 | chapter 3 | chapter 4] fic summary: when violette surana escaped the gallows thirty years ago, samson never expected to see her again, let alone as the chantry’s blessed herald of andraste. but here they are now, on opposite sides of the war and very much not ready to fall in love. pairing: raleigh samson x inquisitor. rating: explicit (not yet, but soon enough). chapter summary: in which samson recalls the day he first met the hero of ferelden. warnings: some implied abuse (very light).

Samson spent days suffering through Cullen's interrogations — which was to say, answering a lot of questions with “I-don't-knows” followed by a contemptuous “As Corypheus' general, you know surprisingly little about his whereabouts.” He'd already given Cullen the locations of all the Red Templar camps he could think of. What more did he want? Samson didn't know where the Elder One was hiding and he never had. Besides, he had a feeling Corypheus would show himself sooner rather than later. The Inquisition had thwarted his plans at every turn, he was pissed and desperate. And desperate people made stupid mistakes. Even when they were ancient magisters with a God complex.

Now, the two former templars spent most of their time glaring at each other in tense silence until someone else came to their rescue. With Violette still on the Storm Coast, the task usually fell to Nemea who would share lunch with the two of them while trying to make conversation. She was sweet, and Cullen was clearly very taken with her, but even she couldn’t find a way to make them utter more than a few monosyllabic sounds.

In the hours after lunch, Samson’s guards escorted him through the corridors of Skyhold to a place deep within the belly of the fortress. It was an undercroft that had been converted into a forge by the Inquisition. The place reminded him of Maddox, the lively young apprentice and the stone-faced tranquil Meredith had turned him into. It wrecked his heart — or what little was left of it — to know that never again would he find Maddox working at his anvil, nor hear the sound of his hammer hitting steel and ringing through the night in a symphony of blows and crackling fire.

Looking around him, Samson found the cave impressively built. Its structure was solid and durable. Whatever purpose it had served in the days of yore, its foundations had remained strong and sturdy. No wonder it had been chosen to house the Inquisition’s workshop.

He also did not fail to notice the precipice on the far side of the room, a steep fall from the mountain. Maybe this was why he'd been brought here. The Commander couldn't bear to so much as look at him anymore so he'd asked his men to push him into the abyss.

It just occurred to me that since I have 5 (and counting) worldstates where all my OCs always (or almost) coexist, it can get a little confusing when I talk about them. So just assume I'm talking about their main worldstate, where they're the hero.

But then there's Neriah who's fucking important in not one, not two, but THREE worldstates!!!

Sad Mages: She's the Warden's (Ana) daughter and Hawke's (Alwyn) adopted niece. Her mother raised her and loves her so very much.

Second Chances: She's also the Warden's daughter, but it's a different Warden (Day). While he is absent from her life, her existence is still important to his story.

Homecoming: She's Hawke's adopted niece, but a different Hawke (Letta). She's never met her parents (yet) but she became the Herald of Andraste somehow.

So yeah, that's a lot and I was thinking I should probably start tagging individual worldstates and AUs...

Eldest daughter of two Tal-Vashoth, she has a younger sister; Issala.

The two sisters are very close and picked each other’s names (note: I headcanon that Tal-Vashoth usually let their children choose their own names).

Met Cullen while he was still a templar and they were both chasing the same apostate. They fell in love but went their separate ways once their mission was over.

Cullen is the one who suggested hiring the Valo-Kas as security for the Conclave.

The two of them are reunited after the explosion.

Interesting facts about Ana and how she came to be

So, I was going through some very old files I’ve got saved on my Google Drive and oh boy, what a trip down memory lane! It’s so interesting to see just how much my baby’s evolved over the years! She’s the reason I started this blog, you know. I was planning a fic and I wanted to share it with other DA fans. But the funny thing is, I never wrote that fic or shared anything about it before 😅

Anyway, here’s what Ana was like in the beginning:

Her parents were a mage and a templar who had run away together. At some point, I decided to make her a Circle baby and Orsino’s daughter, but I kept the idea of having a templar parent for Amell.

I had originally kept the default name, Neria, but after making her a Circle baby, I decided that Surana would be her only name (shortened into Su at first, then Ana). I eventually named her daughter Neriah as a little personal easter egg.

Her relationship with Anders wasn’t particularly strong. They got along well enough, but wouldn’t really become friends until Awakening. And their relationship would have gotten strained along the way, resulting in her going after him for what happened in Kirkwall (yeah, not my best idea...)

She was going to be paired with Cullen. They would have met again during or after DAI and their relationship would have blossomed from there.

Alistair was going to die killing the Archdemon right from the start. It’s one of the only ideas I kept when I finally started posting about Ana, and only recently did I change my mind about it.

I was going to write a story where Ana attempts to go physically into the Fade to rescue Hawke.

It’s at that point that I stopped shipping her with Cullen and started shipping her with Bethany (yup, Hawke was a Rogue back then!)

Fun fact: The Reason was originally written with Ana in mind and she would have told Bethany about her experience as a Circle mage.

Back then, Carver was paired with Mahariel, and I had started writing Broken Nights with her in mind. Though I don’t remember why I decided to switch them around 🤷‍♀️

I hated the concept of soulmates in the romantic sense (I’ve since then come to realize that I’m aro) so in order to subvert it, I was going to make Ana and Hawke platonic soulmates (not explicitely, but I wanted to develop a strong friendship between them). I never really got around to do it though. It could still happen, I guess, but it’s starting to look more and more like Ana is Samson’s “other person” instead, which is fine by me.

Was betrothed to Sebastian but since neither of them liked it, they decided to do everything in their power to avoid getting married. Their plan worked and, even though they’d grown close, the wedding was cancelled.

Sebastian was subsequently sent to the Chantry.

Marries Nathaniel a few years later in secret.

Main DAO choices include: romancing Leliana, making Alistair king with Anora as queen, sparing Loghain and performing the ritual.

Her relationship with Leliana doesn’t survive the distance.

Covers for Anders after he runs from the Wardens.

Leaves the Wardens after the Chantry explosion and basically goes on the run from everyone because she feels responsible for what happened.

Helps Sebastian reclaim his throne. They fall in love and eventually do get married.

Leliana contacts her to help the Inquisition fight Corypheus.

She stays behind in the Fade.

She eventually finds a way out of the Fade and returns cured from the Blight. Because I said so.

Finally marries Sebastian.
