fuckin love blown away. just a group of insanely talented camera-awkward people sweating buckets in a dim warehouse while a host who knows exactly zilch about glass cracks bad jokes. highly recommend if you like reality competition shows and know nothing about glass.

OK, I'm not gonna respond directly to 1.5 year old tags on one of my posts with less than 100 notes, but it's been eating at me ever since. Is Deborah Czeresko, winner of season 1 of Blown Away on Netflix, a terf?
I can see why, after watching the show, you would come to that to conclusion. Lucky for you, I went down a deep internet wormhole tonight.
Evidence Deborah's a TERF:
Tumblr media
TERF bangs and lots of eggs as female symbolism, both in a domesticity way and a bioessentialist way.
Doesn't look good BUT:
Evidence Deborah's not a TERF:
Tumblr media
They/them pronouns and trans flag in official Instagram bio.
Describes themselves as queer on their homepage (but uses she her pronouns on it) and says their art is about queer issues.
instagram
Makes these adorable glass trans eggs and donates part of the profits to lgbtq Healthcare.
This quote from a NYTIMES profile:
Glass “is nonbinary on a molecular level because it is a super cooled liquid that has the physical properties of both a liquid and solid,” Czeresko. “Even when cooled and solid, the molecules are constantly moving, similarly to a liquid. As a compound, it exists in multiple states.”
Final verdict: not a TERF.
Thank God, i can rest easy now.

something about jesse custer repeating cycles of what's been done to him and how the show drives the point home of how that's Literally Hell. reliving the same day over and over with tulip after dallas. trapping the saint in the armored truck in the swamp like the coffin he was put in. when he's mad or challenged or upset, dropping back into the righteous preacher casting judgement on everyone around him for not being good enough, fully and hypocritically aware of his own mountains of sin and not sure if he'll ever be forgiven for them. boy you are sooooooo fucked up

watched blown away season 4! i detest morgan she gives me 2013 edgy tumblr vibes. her stuff isnt even that scary/creepy and theyre all “ooo terrified to my core” like shut up.
spoilers for s4 ending
ALSO she shouldn’t of won, genuinely there was so many times she shouldve been sent home!!! definitely shouldnt have won! one of the criterias was creativity and she just did the cell block tango murders in glass form. tbf it is a cool installation (im a sucker for interactive work) BUT IT WASNT HER IDEA??? it wasnt a sloght reference or a clever twist on it, it was just the 6 murders in glass form ://// boring. she shouldnt of won the spooky challenge either he mushroom was boring asf and average.

The list, Q1
When I completed my christmas calendar in December I made a list of (for me) new series I'd like to watch in 2024. This is what I've got so far:
Griselda
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩
This was mine and my boyfriend's mutual project. We don't really have the same taste in series, but sometimes they overlap. Like, when it both have drugs, murders and Sofia Vergara. This one's really Sofia in her prime, she does an amazing job portraying the strong, targeted drug queen of Miami. Highly recommend!
------
Heartbreak High
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩🦩
This has come up as a sugestion for me for a long time, since it's in my absolute most common genre; teenage dramas with queer elements. That also comes with some high expectations when I finally get around to watch it. Heartbreak High mostly lives up to this, there's a lot of well developed characters and a story that reminds me a lot of Sex Education. I'm looking forward to how season 2 (drops April 11th) will develop the story. And yes, Quinni is the best!
------
The Unlisted
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩🦩
This was practically all my childhood nightmares come to life and I was so hooked by the ever thrilling story. I sat in angst cheering so hard for the kids to succeed with their mission. Looses one flamingo mostly because it ended with a cliffhanger and then got canceled.
------
One Day
(Netflix)
🦩🦩
First and foremost, I do have a big problem with these kind of stories. It concists of building up a lot of hope, just to tear it down by the end. I don't really see the fascination in that. But I did mostly like the movie from 2011 and therefore it felt obvious I should check this out. I really liked the production, the environments and the overall look of it. But I was not that impressed by the actors', more specifically the leads', performance. Big bonus for Essie Davis as Alison though, would love to see more of her.
------
Never have I ever
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩
This is also a series that's been lying around in my list, waiting to be seen, for a while. I can't say it entirely lived up to my expectations, but it definitely has its highlights and insights. I like the comedy-drama-mix, cultural representation and the adults. But I'm having trouble with a lot of Devi's personality and how they handle queer representation. From time to time I mostly found it a bit boring.
------
Everything now
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩🦩
This was HEAVY on so many levels, I had to watch this from time to time spread out over several weeks, mixed up with lighter stuff. But it was also SO good! Not having ED myself I can't say weither this was a good representation of it, but I really felt I got to be inside Mia's brain and understand anorexia a bit better. I liked how not everything was about that though, it was also just normal teenage life, because yeah, why shouldn't it? I also liked how everyone's sexuality was normalised.
------
My life with the Walter boys
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩
This was the kind of series that got me giggling, hiding behind a pillow several times. Not cringey, more like I really felt their feelings and cheered for them not to make bad decissions. It's a beutiful story and a bit like a teenage version of Chesapeake Shores meeting all Hallmark christmas movies. The queer representation leaves a lot to wish for. And I can't stop thinking about the fact that Jackie moves in to a family, directly sees some of them as siblings (Parker, for example) while she has no trouble falling in love with two others. Isn't that a bit...strange? What am I missing?
------
The White Lotus
(HBO)
🦩🦩🦩
My immidiate description of this series is; odd. It was not at all what I expected and I'm having trouble describing it at all. Is it good? Well, it's not bad..? There are definitely some amazing cast performances from i.e. Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson, Leo Woodall (I actually found him to be better here than in One day), Murray Bartlett and Jake Lacy. The constant background music is mostly just annoying, but otherwise the sets and production is great.
------
Smiley
(Netflix)
🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩
Don't even know how to start here, because I was kind of floored by this. I binged it all in one night and I changed between crying and laughing the whole time. It's a wonderful, cute, well-written, queer love story set in the city of my dreams (Barcelona). The agonising feelings of falling in love are so relatable and so are the challenges meet by friends and family. This is a slow burn, opposites-attract story for when you just want to feel good. Bring tissues!
------
Other highlights and rewatches:
Young Royals season 3; one of the best last episodes ever, even caught the eye of my very hesitant boyfriend.
Modern Family; when the world's in shambles - go back to comfort.
Blown away season 4; who knew a reality show about glasblowing would be this thrilling? I've saved the finally for a rainy day.
Young Sheldon season 7; last season is droping one episode a week. I'll sure miss this!
Glamorous; I was very sad to find out this was cancelled, but a rewatch still makes me happy!
XO, Kitty; I'm getting more impatient to hear what's next, give me season 2 now!
But, the biggest thing dropping during these first months was obviously;
Heartstopper season 3 will drop in October!!🍂
See you in June for the next report!

Blown away : Season 4
It was a blast.
Morgane and Ryan should have won both of them. They are so different.
Some quotes:
"- It blows my mind how calm and composed you are." (Episode 1)
"- Oh, you get used to that. My first instructor in undergrad made us pick our favorite thing, and then we went outside and smashed it. So that was, like, lesson number one, don't get attached to your work." (Episode 1)
"- That is the saddest story I've ever heard in my entire life." (Episode 1)
"- There's certainly a personality type that gravitates towards glass." (Robert - Episode 2)
"- Adrenaline junkie meets artsy sad boy." (Episode 2)
"- My problems are other people's dreams. That's what the piece is about." (Morgane - Episode 8)
"- Being top three is amazing. Did I think I would get here in my fantasyland, where I like to live 100% of the time? Yes, I saw myself in the top three." (Morgane - Episode 9)
"- Jonathan clearly has what glassblowers like to call "cane fever". You use cane all the time, nonstop. You just can't stop. Can't stop, won't stop." (Ryan - Episode 9)
"- The plan was to be unapologetically myself." (Morgane - Episode 10)

Angry Rant Incoming: Blown Away glass competition on Netflix
I don't usually watch competition TV, because I know there is that judge that is made for you to hate and makes you root for the competitors that win them over, and editing makes the whole thing staged even if the talent is real.
But when I was a kid I would go to the glass museum with my mom, I love seeing different types of artistry (I mean it's my url), and my lunch is 30 minutes long so we've been watching an episode a day.
I have never seen a more biased, hypocritical, bigoted, and corrupt competition in my life. Besides the first season winner, who has made performative feminism her whole personality, the winners work has been dogshit. They are either friends with the producers or gave the show a lot of money to buy their win. This show has piggy backed off the literal blood, sweat, and tears of their token minorities with unbelievable talent and stolen thousands of dollars of their time. Dangling a possible success in front of them with well earned praise, and the fact that the first winner was a women in a male-dominant medium.
I am most appalled at whatever the fuck is going on with John Moran. (Spoilers I guess but don't watch this show) He is the winner of season 3 for no good reason. This man taught himself how to color and texture glass and nothing else, bought a studio, and then got some of the worst criticism I've heard on this show. And won???
I know art isn't always pretty and is made to make you think about the nitty-gritty, but sometimes they are just bad at art. MOST of his finale piece was the work of his assistants, who he then took credit for even though he admitted on camera he had them doing what he himself was unable to execute. Then got credit for it without it being labeled a collaboration. That. Isn't. Art. That's plagiarism, something a Karen got eliminated for in a previous epsiode.
I have seen indigenous and queer artists with mind blowing talent be knocked off the show in favor of this asshat (and other white dudes) who has had nothing original to say, and makes sculptures that look like plastic my dog chewed on.
I haven't seen any news outlet look into this show but 90 percent of the people watching it are furious and for good reason. I just had to vent that shit instead of looking up where John Moran lives

finally watched rottmnt movie! i’ll put my thoughts below the cut lol
so basically, i...just kinda thought it was okay? nothing great, unfortunately? it obviously had some great moments, but i think the arc of the movie as a whole was hindered by a couple key things:
1. it was kinda just Leo: The Movie. and i didnt really dig that. i think it would’ve made a much stronger story if they’d had ALL the turtles grow in some kind of way, but all of them stayed static except for Leo.
2. and even if people WERE clamoring for a Leo-centric movie for some reason, his movie arc is LITERALLY AN OBSTACLE HE’S ALREADY OVERCOME IN THE MAIN SERIES. IT’S LITERALLY A POINT OF GROWTH FOR HIM TO STOP BEING SO ARROGANT ALL THE TIME AND WORK AS A TEAM. THEY ALREADY RESOLVED THIS?!?!?!?! ASJHCFJKNHKGMH. just...why????
3. i’ve heard people saying that the creative team was pressured to make this as appealing as possible even to tmnt fans who maybe didnt actually watch Rise, but in the end it that means we lose a LOT of what made the Rise characterizations and writing so great in the series itself. the writing isn’t as snappy or quirky; maybe these writers are just more suited for writing serialized stories instead of a feature-length story, and that’s fine! or maybe they felt the need/were pressured to tone down some of the more Rise-specific narrative style, if that makes any sense. (small example that i feel reflects this vibe: the moment where they finally call themselves the teenage mutant ninja turtles. it was a running gag in the show to never actually claim that name for themselves in that exact order, and so when they finally do, it feels almost inauthentic, because i think that running gag helped re-inforce the whole theme this series was going for in terms of separating this iteration of the Turtles from the past iterations and really stepping out and making their own way. that’s the joy of the Rise series, honestly, is how unafraid they are to make their OWN world with these characters without diverging completely from the source material.) And i couldn’t help but feel the stark absence of the typical Rise running jokes/catch phrases/references in the movie. that’s something i love so much about the show: the careful attention to detail in maintaining continuity and continuing/resolving past gags. they literally only said “hot soup!” twice in this movie. and i feel like that’s really, really indicative of the whole vibe of it, honestly. it just lacks the explosive energy that makes the show so great. :(
as for a couple key things i did like:
the animation was obviously gorgeous, just as it is in the main series, too. seriously, rottmnt has forever spoiled me for tv series animation. and i did really like what they did with the Krang! THIS part certainly felt like how the series normally runs—taking a traditional TMNT concept and breathing fresh, new life into it, making it take on a different form so it’s unique to THIS tmnt universe. i love it!!
they went out of their way to devote time to donnie’s softshell! ahhhhhh!!!!!!! i love it!!!!!! (tho i think a majority of donnie’s dialogue was missing a little.... je ne sais quois. the donnie-ness, if you will. his snark often felt either too dry, or not quite witty enough—never in the sweet spot that it’d hit in the show. but maybe im just being nitpicky and other fans didn’t really find a problem with it!)
the escape pods just as a general concept were fucking GREAT. (tho here’s another negative, oops: i feel like donnie’s tech didn’t feature in the movie NEARLY as much as it does in the show, precisely because of how this was trying to still have watch value even for non-Rise fans. i mean, the number of times donnie’s been without a battle shell and just called one to him remotely, and yet somehow that couldn’t happen this time? am i missing something here or.....?)
all in all, it was definitely enjoyable, but i’d say it has MUCH lower re-watch value than the show does for me. i think what’s the most telling, though, is how i teared up and had goose-bumps for the entire final fifteen minutes during the Rise series finale, during the absolutely GORGEOUS Shredder fight scene—which was even better than the final battle in the movie, imo (though the fight scenes in the film still looked fucking amazing). i truly loved the emotional catharsis at the end of the movie, and mikey’s big savior moment was well-executed, too (huge shout out to the movie soundtrack which really helped drive the tension and emotion in critical scenes like this!), but all in all, i guess i’ve just got one thing to say to sum up how i’m feeling:
i never thought i’d prefer leo’s odachi over his katana.
