Honestly loving playing in the Netherdeep campaign setting with my d&d group, especially with there being rival mechanics.

I did read the campaign setting before nagging my DM to DM it and now we're 6(?) sessions in and holy shit I love the lore.

The party consists of a Tiefling Blood Wizard, a Kenku Way of Astral Self Monk, and a Pallid Elf Moon Cleric that worships the Moonweaver (my character), all of our characters are Ruidisborn, and currently we've made it to Bazzoxan (yes we met Verin Thelyss) and are getting more information on the Jewel of Three Prayers but also trying to create relationships (platonic or romantic) with the rivals, slightly complicated for my elf since I asked my DM, initially as a joke, if her and Galsariad could be exes

(kind of a bland description but morning coffee hasn't kicked in :') )

Chapter 1:

But its sharp-toothed smirk turns into a hiss of pain as the shadowy version of Verin’s glaive emerges from the demon’s stomach with a sickening squelch. Verin’s echo grabs hold of one wing, pulling it back enough to let Verin slip free. With a quick retaliating slash, his echo dissipates, but it gives Verin just enough time to drag his dagger through the wing’s tender flesh. He throws his weight against the demon, taking advantage of the distraction, and they fall hard to the ground. Verin stabs his dagger through the unhurt wing, pinning the demon to the ground like a butterfly on exhibition.

Several chapters later:

Verin wakes to find Mairon sleeping next to him, red hair splayed across the pillows, his wings temporarily shape-changed away. His arm is casually thrown over Verin’s hips, his face turned toward Verin’s. He must have come back at some point in the night, but Verin had been so exhausted he hadn’t noticed.

He studies Mairon now, looking for… something different, a change that’d give him a clue to his late night activities. He’d also shape-changed his scars away, all except for the one low on his stomach, where Verin had run him through the first day they met.

Verin traces his fingers along the raised line, thinking about all the hidden marks that no longer adorn Mairon’s smooth porcelain skin. Were they ever real? Just an act he put on? Or were they too real, evoking painful memories? Either way, Mairon had kept this one, seemingly as a keepsake of their fickle relationship. It’s weirdly sweet.

- one character’s ex was abusive and awful and murdered her best friend  - one character’s warlock patron visited her - EVERYONE is ruidus-born (in one way or another)  - general alyxian lore drop after lore drop  - one character’s aunt (who she’s been looking for) wrote an ominous message on the wall

Air genasi barbarian self-proclaimed archivist (of dangerous items) with looooow CHA can have a little accidental ruidium corruption on a failed save, as a treat XD. Whoopsies! 😘

Ahhh, Call of the Netherdeep is a blast, love me some Critical Role campaign settings XD

an interesting detail about otohan is a treat for netherdeep fans: she is the near spitting image of alyxian in his youth. she has the same shade of tan skin, the same build, the same short hair thats curly in some iterations and later has the same silver. she wears more high-tech, but similar gear to what alyxian did. both were champions of gods only for a disaster to strike regarding their religion with such intensity they and the continent marquet were forever changed. it is as if otohan wishes to emulate alyxian, to be this generation's legendary ruidisborn as the wheel turns again to calamity. what she doesnt know is that alyxian never died. that (in a good ending of a netherdeep campaign) alyxian has begun to walk exandria again, an old man who did not truly lose faith in the gods but who has decided to find peace. she intentionally or not has tried to become him in a war of vengeance when his entire story is about facing what he & the gods did in the calamity, and realizing he is more than the trauma of war & ostracization, more than being a weapon, and more than his red mooned curse.

it's all fun and games until the safest place for your party to be is inside the terrifying monument to the greatest evil to ever afflict the world :)

(Netherdeep crew has officially entered the Betrayers' Rise, despite the professional recommendations of nearly everyone in Bazzoxan! I'm sure absolutely nothing will go wrong from here on out!)
