Nettles Week-Day 3: Favorite Platonic Character Dynamic 🐑

In the end, the brown dragon was brought to heel by the cunning and persistence of a "small brown girl" of six-and-ten, who delivered him a freshly slaughtered sheep every morning, until Sheepstealer learned to accept and expect her. Munkun sets down the name of this unlikely dragonrider as Nettles. Mushroom tells us the girl was a bastard of uncertain birth called Netty, born to a dockside whore. By any name, she was black-haired, brown-eyed, brown-skinned, skinny, foul-mouthed, fearless...and the first and last rider of the dragon Sheepstealer.

DAY 4 AN UNLIKELY DRAGONRIDER: A WEEK OF NETTLES.

Arranged Marriage .

Nettles in an arranged marriage is my favourite trope. No matter why or who, placing her in such a complex situation is always great. Personally, I'm prone to her and Daeron getting together with this trope, but, Nettles and the other seeds, Nettles and the great houses and even just as a plot for her and Daemon, it just has so much potential and if we get her in hotd i hope its one of her biggest fanfic tropes. If you look for Nettles x Cregan Stark or Nettles x Random Dayne, I've made my love for this trope known with au poste for it. Some fanfics that reference it:

Fire Witch

One thing about this trope is that typically, it doesn't deviate from what little we know about her after Maidenpool. It's her in universe, written potential ending and leaves a lot of room for her to grow. It has potential from, cult leader in a time of grief to found family undertones for her. No matter how you view it, it's one of her best tropes. Most importantly, it's criminally underutilised for her, so an intervention is required. A fanfic for reference however,:

This is in the realm of aus and so on where, in some sense of happiness, when Nettles leaves Westeros, she ends up in a situation where she can love and be free. Her dragon is safe. She is happy, and the rest works out. I tend to stick to Au's and not actual fiction about her but there are a few gems to look to. However, I'm going to recommend one:

A flash of red catches James Potter’s eye for the very first time.

James Potter was twelve years old the first time he really noticed Lily Evans’s hair. Obviously, he’d seen it plenty of times before, just like he’d seen Sirius’s hair or his Mum’s hair. The difference was that he hadn’t ever looked at it properly before. 

The day it happened, he and Sirius were in their usual seats in the Potions classroom, at the bench in the back right corner; the one that was least visible from Slughorn’s desk and therefore offered the most potential for messing about. 

Sluggie had finished his opening lecture on the topic of Swelling Solution - or at least that was what James assumed he’d been talking about, since that was what was written on the board, but he honestly hadn’t heard a word; he’d been too busy scribbling notes to Sirius. In fairness, Swelling Solutions did sound like they could be quite entertaining, and the idea of slipping some into the pumpkin juice at the Slytherin table convinced him that it might be worth actually putting a bit of effort in for once.  

He and Sirius played Spell, Shield, Serpent to decide who had to go and get their ingredients from the supply cupboard. Sirius lost, and made a rude gesture at James as he scraped his stool back along the stone floor. James smirked at him, then started to flick through his textbook looking for the right page, when a flash of red caught his attention; Evans, sitting next to that greasy loser Snape at the bench immediately in front of him, had flipped her hair back over her shoulders.

Her hair, he noticed, was remarkably thick and shiny, and James idly considered asking what Sleekeazy products she used. It was a very unusual colour, too. Auburn, he thought it was called; not an obnoxiously bright red, like the Prewett twins, but a darker, richer shade altogether. It seemed to change as she moved her head, the lamplight creating rose gold highlights and purple-plum shadows amidst the rich chestnut. 

As he watched, she picked up three sections from near the front, and began to weave them together, nimble fingers dancing a fascinating waltz down her head. She deftly pulled more and more strands into the pattern as she went, and the repetitive movement was oddly hypnotic. It left James entranced.

She’d just reached the nape of her neck when Sirius returned.

“How the hell is she doing that?” he muttered. 

“How is who doing what?” asked Sirius, dismissively.

“Evans.” He nodded towards her. “Doing that with her hair, behind her head, without a mirror or a charm or anything.”

“Oh. I dunno. Oi, Evans!” called Sirius. “James wants to know what you’re doing?”

Quite unexpectedly, James felt his skin heat with embarrassment at the thought that Evans might know he’d been looking at her. It was the strangest feeling, one that was completely unfamiliar. James decided that he didn’t like it, not at all. 

Lily shot them a disdainful look as she secured the tail of her hair with a band. “I’m plaiting my hair, obviously. You know, so it doesn’t get in the way while I’m brewing.” She looked pointedly at Sirius’s collar length locks. “Maybe I should teach you?”

Sirius looked horrified. “What? Like a girl? No way!”

Evans rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to the ingredients on the bench in front of her. 

“Why are you so interested in Evan’s hair all of a sudden?” asked Sirius, curiously.

“I’m not,” huffed James.

And he wasn’t. He had far more important things to think about after all, like Quidditch trials, for instance, and how he and Sirius were going to sneak their Swelling Solution out of the classroom without Sluggie noticing. Resolute, he started measuring out dried nettles to add to his mortar. He wasn’t going to think about Evans’s hair ever again; he was sure of it.

Chapter 2: Waiting

Chapter triggers: Violence, PTSD

Katara has no idea how long they’ve been imprisoned in this room. 

The minutes and hours bleed into one another until she can’t tell whether days, weeks, or mere seconds have passed. The lanterns either side of the doorway never go out. Their dim light flickers incessantly – making the passage of time even more confusing. The only indication that more than just a little while has passed is her steadily growing appetite. Between the hunger, the unrelenting cold, and the fleeting, fitful moments of sleep, Katara’s energy begins to wane, leaving her feeling like a wrung sponge.

She and Zuko haven’t exchanged a single word since those few spiteful comments in the wake of Commander Shai’s visit, and the air hangs heavy between them – yet another thing that rubs at Katara’s frayed nerves.

She watches him now; inspecting the manacles around his wrists with cool precision. He feeds one length of chain through his hands, following it back to the small hole in the wall through which it disappears. He pokes at the opening. It’s clearly far too narrow to get his finger in alongside the chain, yet he seems intent on trying to do so. Katara scoffs derisively.

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like I’m doing.” Zuko responds flatly, not bothering to pause his inspection. 

Katara scowls at the back of his head. It feels as though she’s always scowling whenever Zuko is around. Being trapped in here with him is going to give her premature wrinkles.

“What’s the point?” She snips, “Even if we get free of the chains, the door is still locked from the outside.”

“We wait until they unlock the door, then overpower them.”

She exhales heavily through her nose. Haven’t they just had this conversation? If he wants to behave like a petulant toddler, then she’s going to speak to him like one. 

“We talked about this. Even if we get out of these chains and through the door without being killed first, we still have no idea what we’re going to find outside this room.”

Zuko finally turns, frustration evident in the set of his jaw. “We have to try something. Don’t you want to get off this ship?”

“Of course I do,” she snaps.

“Are you sure? ‘Cause you’re acting like you wouldn’t mind hanging around for a while.”

“For Spirits’ sake Zuko!” 

His sarcasm nettles her immediately. Like he has any right to be mad at her— 

He has every right to be mad at you. You got him into this mess and he hasn’t once blamed you for it. 

Katara ignores the intrusive thought and barrels on. 

“When was the last time we had anything to eat or drink? We’re running on empty. And you’re clearly injured, even though you’ve been trying to hide it from me." 

It hasn’t escaped her notice that Zuko has been favouring one side: Bruised ribs, she guesses, based on his movement. Evidently he hadn’t gone down without a fight after she’d been knocked out. Certainly fits his nature.

Zuko roars his frustration and twists, driving a fist into the wall behind him. The dull clang is immediately followed by a yelp, and he shuffles from one foot to the other, clutching at his hand. 

Katara smirks darkly. “Feel better?”

He shoots her a glare as he turns, sliding back down the wall to sit and rub his sore knuckles.

“You should really work on your anger management issues.”

“I do not have anger management issues,” Zuko yells.

She raises an eyebrow, “Sure. You’re always in perfect control of your emotions.”

He shoots back to his feet with an agitated growl, and begins pacing as much as his chains allow him to. The metal links jerk and rattle, smothering any sound of his footsteps which are catlike even in his anger.

Katara watches him fume and finds it oddly calming. This is a Zuko she knows: The angry boy who chased them from Pole to Pole. It’s familiar, and there’s safety in that. There’s no safety in the confused, anguished boy who opened up to her beneath Ba Sing Se. Nor in the earnest young man who had shown up at the Western Air Temple in their hour of need. Nor the ‘selfless hero’ that had braved the Boiling Rock with Sokka to rescue her father and Suki. It is too hard and too confusing to reconcile all these different versions of Zuko. She doesn’t know which one is real, and she therefore does not trust any of them. 

At last, he rounds on her, shoulders bunched beneath his black tunic.

“So what?! So what if I feel things strongly? That’s who I am, and I don’t have to justify that to you. I’ve made my peace with it. And right now we’re trapped on an enemy warship with a raving psychopath and no one knows where we are and I don’t know how to get us both out of here safely. So yeah – I think anger is a reasonable thing to be feeling.”

Katara bristles – offended by his emphasis on her safety. As if she isn’t capable of looking after herself. She doesn’t want him feeling responsible for her, doesn’t want any ties between them, and definitely doesn’t want any favours owed.

“And you’re hardly any better than me,” Zuko continues, barrelling through her thoughts, “You feel things strongly too, just like I do, and you never hold back from expressing yourself.”

“Expressing is one thing – at least I’m in control of my emotions.”

“Are you?” He cocks his head knowingly. 

Katara clamps her mouth shut so hard that her molars clack. She glares at him, her nostrils flaring with each breath like an enraged bull.

“Exactly,” he sneers, “You and I are more alike than you think.”

“I am nothing like you!” She shoots to her feet with a clanging of chains, and squares up to him as though he isn’t a head taller and confined to the opposite side of the cell. Too furious to care that her response has given merit to his claim. 

But Zuko doesn’t gloat – only glares right back with a matching ferocity, “That isn’t true and you know it.”

Katara growls in anger, tearing her gaze away before it reveals too much. She begins to pace on her own side of the room; an almost identical reenactment of him.

“Perhaps that’s your issue with me,” Zuko insists. “You hate that we have things in common. You hate that you see yourself in me even though I’m from the Fire Nation.”

“Shut up.” She doesn’t want to hear his bullshit.

“It’s why you let me come on this mission with you in the first place – because you know I’m the only one who understands. Because you know I’m the only one who wouldn’t judge you for however you wanted to handle it.”

“And how would you handle it Zuko? If you were faced with your mother’s killer?” 

Behind the bite in her words, the question thrums. Suddenly, she finds that she truly wants an answer. What would he have done, if their positions were reversed? Because even as she had walked towards the Commander, his blood bending to her will… she hadn’t known what came next. To plot revenge is one thing – to make a vow of action, and to play out fictitious scenarios in the minds eye – but when it comes down to it… would she really have killed him? If it had been the right man, and not Shai? 

Is she capable of such things?

Katara watches Zuko carefully. His anger seeps away, leaving an expression that she has absolutely no idea how to interpret. He does appear surprised by her question – his lips forming a small ‘oh’ shape – and surprised further as it dawns on him that she is genuinely waiting for an answer. But before he can offer one they’re interrupted by the heavy scrape of a deadbolt.

We are in the business of life! Our 2023 seed production in Ojai, California.

Spring never really got going here in Ojai, and as I write these words summer is nearly here. Between the heavier winter rains (this a 45 inch - and counting - rain year) and weeks of overcast days, moon cycles have been an afterthought.

The plants keep growing through the fog, rain, and cloudy weather. Kendall harvested our Fizz Kale plants two weeks ago, making this our first seed crop of the year. Fizz is a salad kale, with smooth, oak shaped emerald colored leaves and white veins. It was the very first lot of seed we logged for the company back in 2011, and was definitely in need of improvement. We focused on one thing: culling out early bolting plants, prolonging the usefulness and flavor of the leaves as they mature. (Given this kale is harvested young as a micro green, it’s unsurprising this might have been not a priority, as harvest would typically occur long before any chance of flowering occurs) 

Up next is our largest production of Cherry Glow Breadseed Poppy. We did smaller runs of these in 2017 (me) and 2022 (Richard Gambino/Topa Vista Farmstand). The last few of Richard’s packets are still available, along with a bulk size. 

(We also have a new variety we are adding: Flemish Peony Poppy. I first spotted this on Cacia Huff’s Feral Farm instagram feed, and she sent me some seed stock)

We planted 10 pounds of Chimyan Garlic last fall, and harvesting was completed earlier in the month. Hardnecks aren’t always suitable for Southern California climates, but these bulbs look promising, and a quality planting stock would allow us to make this available to our customers in 2024.

New crops of Double White Hollyhock and Krishna Holy Basil are currently in the ground. Krishna seems to be the most temperature sensitive of the holy basils I’ve ever worked with. It really didn’t like this cold, and needs a really long production window for harvest. When it gets established, it’s a sight to be soon. Rama Holy Basil seedlings are also ready to go in, Heavy Hitter Okra seedlings are at the nursery, and I think our first Ojai production of Zanadoo Corn is on the way as well. Another round of Hibiscus was necessary, as we are packing the last of our current seed supply today, and it will likely be gone before the summer is up.

New crops of Silk Mullein, Dense Flowered Mullein, Clary Sage, and Marshmallow are well on their way to producing. Stinging Nettle and Scarlet Bee Balm will likely just increase our planting stock and not be available for sale this year.

After adding Double Black Hollyhock and Madder to the catalog in this past year, and feeling a little inspired by the work of Ride and Dye Ojai, I’ve been wanting to further expand the availability of our dye plants: Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) seemed like an easy place to start and is now in production. I also had two other proper Indigo species “True” Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) - or Guatemalan Indigo (Indigofera suffruticosa) we sent to the nursery, but the germination was too scanty to move forward. Next year!

Steve put a lot of flowers in the ground in this past fall-winter so it’s possible that a lot more will be coming than planned, or just refreshing/replenishing existing stalks. I’m pretty happy to see a new crop of Gaillardia coming on. I’m spying some mixed yarrow and bachelor buttons and a lot of silvery rose strawflower.

I’m continuing to work with my Southern California natives / rugged perennial crops. I planted a lot more Western Vervain this year, and new crops of Black, Purple, and White Sages are nearly ready. I continue to have problems with harvesting quality Hummingbird Sage seed, but after taking a year to experiment with harvesting and timing methods, I’ll give it another go. This is the first year I’ve worked with Cleveland Sage, and it’s looking spectacular.

Elderberry and Matilija Poppy will likely be back in the catalog too. These are quite easy to propagate clonally (root divisions or just straight up branch plantings), but it seems people enjoy the challenge of starting things from seed.

Our network of producers has grown substantially over this past year, and we intend on highlighting their crop production for the company in another blog post later in the year!

22/09/2024. Bonjour à tous 👋, it’s a cloudy day and not particularly warm at 17c.

The photo above was taken on the 16 October 2017 from the window of the apartment I lived in when I first arrived. The church, Saint Maclou, had been closed since about the 1950’s and was becoming an eyesore. A European Fund provided money to restore the building, to become what, I am still unsure. Obviously with Covid, work was halted and it seemed as if the restored building would never appear. However, a walk to town on Friday, took me past the church and I am pleased to report that the portacabins and shuttering are no longer there and the church looks amazing. It is one of the 12th century churches in town and it’s wonderful to see it come to life again in the 21st century. (See photo below). Apparently, the outside work is complete it is now the interior work that needs to be finished.

As I only had one hospital visit this week, I was going to have more time for ME and the things that I like doing.

I was awaiting the arrival of the man to finish cleaning the exterior walls of my house, on Monday. He had said around 9am but as it was a dull morning he didn’t put in an appearance until 2pm. Anyway, he worked like a good ‘un, as we say where I come from. He didn’t finish until 8pm 😳 any later and I would have left him to it and gone to bed!

Having watched the neighbour two doors up preparing the ground and building breeze block pillars to put a motorised gate on his property I was feeling that I needed to tidy my front garden before the winter arrives. Monique had said she would clear the weeds from the raised bed in the back but to be honest the nettles are almost two foot high and it is really bugging me looking so untidy. Can I wait for her to put in an appearance?

On Friday I seemed to have found someone else’s energy and after two walks I still felt ok, so went outside to clear weeds and cat poop from the potager, then cover it with cardboard. Well that’s the idea, the cardboard is too big and I can’t cut it (am hoping a friendly neighbour will do it for me). The friendly neighbour brought home a bag of bark from the supermarket and having found just short of half a bag in the garage, I set to and spread that out. Well it looks as if I will need a few more bags, plus I found a bag lurking in the bottom of the storage box outside. Anyway, to say it looks a little better is no exaggeration.

Yesterday, I had it in my head to cut back the clematis, it’s never been done which is maybe why I haven’t seen it flower. I cut the roses back by a third and had cut the hydrangea back too (not too harshly). As the garden is a jungle of weeds I thought to try and sort those out. Imagine my surprise when I found the majority of the weeds were actually in my neighbours garden and had just grown high and come through the fence. So now not content with the neighbour on the other side with six foot high nettles which come through into my garden I have the neighbour on the other side with his weeds coming through! He has the front of his hedge (forsythia) all looking spic and span and just behind the forsythia loads of big weeds growing into my garden 🤔.

I messaged the gardener to see if we are coming into the time for grass cutting to end and if it’s time for weed killing (like the ivy under the shrubs). No response as yet.

My friend, Sarah, a fellow Brit who lives in Haute Marne, came to see me on Tuesday. We had a wonderful natter and she had insisted on bringing lunch. We had steamed salmon, green beans with roasted tomatoes and new potatoes, followed by (a bought) succès cake. These cakes are delicious my absolute favourites. It made such a change to see someone different and being English it was easier to converse.

Then it was the day of the hospital visit, of course, being Wednesday the cleaner was here at 9am, it was a quick lunch and then the taxi arrived at 12:45 not 13:00 as had been arranged! Anyway, my blood results were good for haemoglobin and on the rise for platelets. I had my platelet transfusion, two injections and my PICC line cleaned and dressed. It was still 6ish when I got home but at least that was only one day.

I do like to think I can have a lie in, but my tablets start at 7am so I think if I have slept from around 10pm to 6:30ish I have had a good rest.

Friday saw the return of the knitting group but unfortunately I wasn’t there. I got a photo of them all waving to me and I sent one back. I really must write a resignation letter so that I don’t have that pressure on me. I will be sad to give it all up but my heart isn’t in it anymore.

Anie came to see me last evening. She brought me golden raspberries from her garden along with a posy of beautiful flowers. We sat and talked, looked into my garden at the four areas of cyclamen and looking for birds. Monique has been unwell with ongoing pain in her back, sciatic nerve and leg. She said she had been finding it difficult to drive. She is hoping to come and see me this coming week. Lise, the lady who was in charge of the office at HUDA ( the refugee office) had her baby at the beginning of September. A little girl (or not so little) she weighed 4 kilos (8lbs 13oz) at birth 🤔 same weight as one of mine. Her name is Leonore, what a pretty name.

I am pleased that my life seems to be more mine rather than the hospitals. Sometimes I have felt that I have done nothing else but get into taxis and visit hospitals. I feel quite “normal” now I am sure you understand what I mean. I have time to cook and prepare some wonderful meals which is great as I am eating lots!

Last night I made a pizza and I ate half with salad, it was delicious and I was pleased I made it.

“The Recovery Coordinator” and “The Solicitor” have been eating healthily this last week. She messaged to say that she has lost 5lbs in weight and is very pleased. Work has been tough but she did work from home one day.

“The Solicitor” has been taking his lunch to work and thoroughly enjoyed what he has been eating. It’s good to see that they are on a health kick, getting out for walks as well as enjoying fruit and salads.

To be honest I have been eating lots of salad and really enjoying it. When I went to the hospital I had had soup and a sandwich which was quite filling. However at 4pm my stomach started rumbling and I could have done with having something tasty to eat. I am cutting out crisps, I had enjoyed them with a sandwich and they seemed to fill me up but I was conscious of the fat and salt content.

“The Photographer” went to London midweek and his company were very pleased with the photographs he had taken. This weekend he has his children, he took them to get some clothes for autumn and they were telling me what they had bought. My grandson went off to find his hoodie which had Marvel characters on it, then the three year old, quite patiently, explained to his aged grand-mere who each character was. I really wanted to laugh it was total role reversal 😂, he is just so adorable.

Now the music section. The first song is by Prince, it’s “Thieves in the Temple Part II” it was released in 1990. A bit of a change from me really.

The second song, is one I am surprised I haven’t had already, it’s by Labelle, it’s Lady Marmalade from way back in 1974.

Well we are heading into the last week of September, today is the autumnal equinox and here is a fact which has brought back memories of my visit there. “The staircases at the main Maya pyramid, El Castillo, at Chichen Itza, Mexico, are built at a carefully calculated angle which makes it look like a snake of sunlight slithers down the stairs the moment the equinox occurs.”

Well let’s see what the coming week has in store for me. Someone close to me will celebrate a birthday……. to say he has been looking forward to that day is an understatement. We will find out more for the blog next week!

Week #1

Introduction

In class I had explored the topics of Belonging, Movies, and the Uncanny Valley. After doing the mind mapping exercise, I decided that for this week I will explore the idea of belonging and nostalgia in unsettling media. I don't have a particular destination in mind with my research, so for this week I want to expand upon those ideas and just go wherever the internet took me.

Research

Beetlejuice (1988)

With the sequel coming out, I thought it would be interesting to rewatch the original which I haven’t seen since I was a kid and then watch the new one in theaters. After watching them both as well as looking into the reception of the new movie, I realized how Tim Burton occupies a very niche place in Hollywood. And I think it makes sense to research him because I guess I am interested in exploring things that are unsettling, but I am not a fan of typical horror.

What I found out was that Burton got his start as a Disney Animator but slowly transitioned towards things that were more “spooky”. Here’s a list of all of the spooky movies he’s done: Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Frankenweenie, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Hansel and Gretel, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and more. Looking into his background, Burton grew up in Burbank, California. Burton said that growing up there left him deprived of seasonal change, and the spooky holiday was a time he could experience that without actually having it.

Now knowing his background, it makes sense that most of his work is about a young outsider “suspicious of adulthood's normalcy”. I loved learning about his work. Going into this I actually was not a fan of Beetlejuice. I just thought it was too creepy as a child, but being able to look back as an adult now I was able to relate a lot more to the themes behind the films. While researching him, I also checked out some work from an art exhibit of his. I think the aesthetic in Beetlejuice is not for me, but I enjoy some of his other work a lot more.

I Saw The TV Glow (2024)

Another movie my research made me think about was I Saw The TV Glow.

The director Jane Schoenbrun uses nostalgia and horror tropes to portray the feeling of queerness but that can be expanded to feeling alienated in general as a kid. In the movie, the main character Owen is introduced to this one show that he becomes obsessed with called the Pink Opaque. We see many clips from it throughout the movie. There’s a really powerful scene near the end of the movie where many years later he rewatched an episode from the show and it looks nothing like it used to be. It was far more childish. I think the movie really captures the feeling of rewatching something and your perception of that media being completely different from what you had in your mind. Sometimes a memory of something from your childhood persists far past the actual thing itself if that makes sense.

Don't Hug me I'm Scared

Salad Fingers 3: Nettles

Going down a bit of a nostalgia trip, I remembered some videos on YouTube that went viral when I was younger. I remembered how my brother liked to show me things like Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared and Salad Fingers because he always liked to freak me out and scare me.

These series were huge for my generation and they tap into this like collective cultural fear of unsettling dangerous things that are hiding “beneath the facade of normality”. It goes into the idea of the uncanny valley, the phenomenon whereby nonhuman objects or creatures’ resemblance to a human creates a feeling of unease and fear. You definitely feel this when watching these videos, where the characters depicted are seemingly harmless because they’re 2D or animated and resembling kids toys that should be safe. But then it devolves into a more sinister world and nature. While these examples don’t go super deep into a meaning or explanation, I thought it was a good starting point due to their huge popularity.

Reflections

I think I explored some really interesting ideas pertaining to the topics that I started with. I like how this eventually led to where I am now. I also like how a lot of the media I watched and researched centered around the idea of not belonging and the feeling of being alienated. Going forward I’m not sure if I want to continue down such a creepy path and I might explore the topic of belonging through a different lens.

The ETBU Bass Fishing team departed Texas for Alaska on Saturday morning as part of ETBU’s Tiger Athletic Mission Experience (TAME). This is the 21st trip for the ETBU Athletic Department TAME initiative and the second for Tiger Bass Fishing, after traveling to the Amazon River in Brazil in 2018.

The team of 16 had a full day of travel on Saturday, which included a flight from Dallas to Anchorage, with a stop in Seattle, and then a three hour drive to Soldotna. They arrived at First Baptist Church Soldotna just before midnight, which is where the group will stay and serve for the week.

“Our first full day in Alaska was nothing short of amazing and what a day it was for our team. We started the day off with a great message from Junior Brett Jolley, who lead the Sunday School lesson, followed by Senior Cade Nettles who preached in the main service. After church and a trip to the grocery store and the local sporting goods store, we were off to the river to fish. For the afternoon, we caught 37 salmon and it was a great time. We are excited for the week and cannot wait to see how the Lord will use us to serve in the Soldotna community over the next few days,” May 2024 graduate Cross Campbell said.
