it's endless days full of sun, it's echoed laughs, firm promises, sweaty hands, it's bare feet on cold tiles in a house corridor, it's desperate searches for shelter in the shade from the sun in bloom, it's salt and sand everywhere, on skin, behind nails, it's neverdrying hair, it's afternoon naps, it's chilled watermelon, fresh vegetable salads, it's silent white walls, it's evening dew on meadows, it's rooftop stargazing during long cloudless nights full of silver constellations, it's early bright mornings, pristine water, rich breeze, fruit snacks, it's raging night thunderstorms, it's the smell of coconut and sunscreen, it's long car drives with windows down, it's young raw cornfields, it's morning birdsongs, it's jars filled with seashells, it's stronger legs, tree climbs, garden exploring, picnic under oak tree, it's warm memories and spontaneous ideas, it's racing heart and healthy lungs.

Imagine #1: Art

(pt. 1)

Okay, so first imagine magical arts and crafts supplies. Little wizards coloring family portraits with Mystical Markers that act like other pictures (paintings, photos), and can take on the personas of their inspirations even when they’re little stick figures, or tiny witches creating creatures the likes of which we’ve never seen, coming to life at the hands of a four year old with a Cryptid Crayon. But why stop there? Imagine writing music with enchanted pens that have the melody ring out as you put it to parchment. Aptly named Mesmerizing Mosaics that have calming affects with their changing patterns of scintillating hues.

So going off of that thread, imagine a young Weasley family sitting at the table on a late summer afternoon, maybe around 1979, with Fred and George causing mayhem before they even usher in the terrible twos. Arthur is out working, so Molly has had to endure the day alone with five children under the age of ten. Of course Bill has some notable maturity for his age, and can easily keep Charlie entertained, but with three toddlers that need constant attention, the older boys have to keep themselves occupied and out of their mother’s hair. Charlie offers the idea of crafting, and Bill suggests that even the twins would find that appeasing for a while. Molly is thrilled to hear such a harmless entertainment option for a small gaggle of small boys with a collective aptitude for trouble. With a twin on each arm, she goes to locate the box of art supplies.

Bill takes to clearing off the table, Charlie goes to find a cloth to cover the “workspace” with young Percy in tow. Molly comes back to the dining room with a big box full of eclectic materials floating behind her, Fred pulling her hair into his mouth, and George laughing at seemingly nothing. After their tasks are completed, Bill and Charlie sit on either side of the long table. Bill hoists Percy up to sit beside him as Molly sits the twins between her and Charlie. With glee, Fred and George take an instant liking to the markers, and begin to scribble on the parchment (and tablecloth). Bill grabs some of the Merlin’s Marvelous Modeling Clay to split between him and Charlie. Percy, with a serious demeanor even as a three year old, looks lost in the midst of the small chaos, but Molly encourages him to pick up the NeverDry watercolors. For a few moments, all is peaceful and quiet.

It didn’t last long. Fred had begun drawing on George despite his mother’s request for him not to. George decided to retaliate in the spirit of good fun, but got a little carried away by accidentally getting color onto Percy’s painting. This did not fare well for Percy, who felt disappointed that his project had been compromised. Bill quickly responds by asking if Percy would like to help him finish his instead, hoping to preoccupy the younger boy (to which Percy gives a resounding yes!) Concurrently Fred, having caused the uproar in his brother gives a little uh oh, and accidentally puts his tiny fist into Charlie’s own creation, the beginnings of a clay dragon. Although Charlie was beyond his years of toddler-hood, he got very upset that his hard work had been put to waste, and though he rationally knew that his one year old brother did not intend to do so, he felt quite devastated. All he wanted was for that little clay dragon to come to an animated state, to have his own little reptile to play with and care for, and now it would take him even longer to complete.

Molly, after this drama had transpired, decided it would be best to put the crafting away and perhaps start on dinner for the boys. She told Fred to give Charlie a kiss before she would whisk him and George to the faucet to clean up. Fred obliged; he stood up on the bench next to Charlie, carefully wrapped his arms around his older brother’s, and planted a soft smooch onto the closest surface of Charlie’s face he could reach. With his good nature, Charlie kindly returned the favor by kissing Fred’s balled fist as if he were accepting his “apology”. Pleased, Molly gently grabbed the twins’ parchments of scribbles that were making funny animal sounds and Percy’s long-abandoned watercolor project, placing them on some nearby counter space. Charlie, who had been keeping the twins from falling off of their seats, sat still until his mother came back. Molly scooped George up in her arms, and Charlie offered to carry Fred to bath for her. The four of them made their way to the other room to wash up. This whole time, Bill and Percy had gone unnoticed.

Charlie was the first to return to the dining area; Molly was giving Fred and George a much needed bath. He sat back in his seat, and hung his head when he saw his failed attempt at a dragonian companion. It wasn’t much of a big deal, it wasn’t the first time he didn’t succeed at obtaining a reptilian friend and it wouldn’t be his last. As Charlie was getting up to put the unused clay back in the big box, Percy quietly called his name. When he looked over, he noticed Bill smiling to Percy and then to him. Bill asked if Percy had anything he wanted to give Charlie, and the youngest boy reached out his hand. The clay creation had already sprung to life: a pocket-sized dragon with a beautifully built body (made by Bill) and slightly misshapen wings (compliments of Percy). Even better than the one he had been making, Charlie would keep it with him as one of his most prized possessions in the years to come.
