hello! longtime no-talk! for sleepover weekend: 1) what do you think is most likely to happen w/ Ted/Rebecca in Ted Lasso, and 2) discarding what you think is most likely to happen, if you were in charge, what would you write for them?

hiiiii!! WELL if you had asked me at the end of s1, hell, after halfway through s2, i would have said they were gearing up towards pairing them together romantically. but the sam plot really threw me for a loop, and at this point, while i don't personally ship them, i think they're probably gonna keep being the main romantic relationship and ted/rebecca will be platonic, but important, friends.

now, if ~*i*~ were writing it, i definitely would have just...gone the obvious route and leaned into the romcom parallels and let ted be the one rebecca was texting!

but we'll see. i will be happily surprised if they decide to pursue these two romantically in s3. but i think given where they left off sam/rebecca in s2, they're gonna find their way back together.

on a completely separate note, I am just re-remembering how much of a jerk max was starting in 2x17 through the end of the season and this show...just wanted me to be happy he and liz got back together???!!! what??!!

He's like, "I'll help you find out what happened to alex." Then, he comforts her at his house and promises to always be her friend. The next day, AT THE FUNERAL, he says "liz, there's nothing weird here, I saw the files, alex killed himself" and then "if you leave, our friendship is over." like, WHAT THE HELL, DUDE? and, of couse, now that liz's gone TO SWEDEN, he has to go sleep with tess, right? seems like the logical step to take after all that went down, totally.

and then it's all basically "yeah, I got tess pregnant but you slept with kyle, liz, so it cancels it out, right? like, we're even, we both fucked up, BUT YOU fucked up FIRST, liz, so.. what right do you even have to get mad? right?? righttt?? .. oh, what's that? you and kyle never slept together? oh... must be time for me to ugly cry then and act pathetic." [a few moments later] "wAiT, WHAT??!! tess killed alex?!?! ok, then. I'm done with her and antar. you're the only one that ever mattered to me, liz. I've been really wrong about a lot. but I was right about one thing, to get you into my life, to be around you, to love you."

so much was left unspoken. season 3 didn't even give us enough flashbacks showing him apologizing to liz and her dealing with it all and having a very hard time forgiving him. 'busted' tried, but it wasn't enough in my opinion.

ready for another song recommendation you definitely did not ask for? if I were to make a 'dan humphrey is a giant sap' playlist, the first song I'd put on there is umpqua rushing by blind pilot (specifically linking the NPR tiny desk which should be enjoyed w/ headphones). the whole song is just "PINING INTENSIFIES" but some of the most DH lines to me are:

"I tried to hold you, I tried everything but running"

"I will not miss you // I will not think each day // of summer twilight, your eyes rushing through me deep"

there's also this beautiful, long, slow build that happens at the end of the song, where it's like the lead singer can't make the words stop - they just pour out of him one line after the next. it creates this effect of like a cyclone of feeling, if that makes any sense?

okay! not on anon, but I was thinking about this as I brushed my teeth and now turn it to you. one of the sometimes complaints I hear about dair, not even from haters but just casual viewers I know, is that the relationship developed too fast. SO, if we take that as a good faith criticism, what are 1-2 places in s1, s2, and s3, you would have tweaked the narrative to lay the groundwork for their eventual romance? could be slight shifts (e.g., a quick line of dialogue) or major structural changes (e.g., giving one character's plot to dan/blair).

Oh wow, I am so obsessed with this ask!! (Also I know this isn't the ask but in WHAT WORLD is Dair too fast lmaoooo, media literacy is failing in this country so bad, but okay okay ignoring that) Okay so:

Season 1

Obviously, we need to fit the essay contest in their somewhere!!! I'd put it around 114/115 - Blair's been dethroned as Queen Bee, been rejected by both Nate and Chuck, Jenny is making a run for her crown, and Serena is dealing with all the Georgina stuff, so Blair really has no one. And of course, her mom doesn't show up either. But Dan does!! Even though Blair beat him in the contest (a source of antagonism between them previously), he still showed up for reasons unknown to even him. And I'd keep it in line with canon, Blair has no idea he's even there, but we do get one shot of Dan and the LookTM and yeah...

Season 2

More build up to the play!!! I love 218, it's in my GG top episodes, but god I would've loved some more. What were Dan and Blair's reactions to being cast as love interests? What were rehearsals like?? We were given so much but also we were robbed of so much. And then obviously you'd need a scene in there of them admitting to each other that the other is talented..."but if you tell anyone I said that, I will have Dorota send the KGB after you Humphrey" "Dorota is Polish, Blair"

I also think they should've interacted in 221! Dan literally was in Blair's house almost that entire episode and Blair wasn't?? We were robbed.

Season 3

More interaction at NYU. They probably would've taken some of the same classes. Dan's best friend (and later girlfriend) lived down the hall from Blair. I don't think they would've had to become friends but it would've been fun to get some more frenemies/academic rivals bits.

And then idk I think there should've been an acknowledgement of what Dair talked about in 318 after Dan punches Chuck in 322. Even if it's just a simple "you deserve better" or something. Yeah.

Here's my "I misunderstood harry potter" moment - I didn't realize a balaclava was a ski mask, so I misread it as baklava (the delicious Greek dessert) which meant I thought Hagrid perpetually walked around Hogwarts with a plate of baklava at all times and no one every questioned it.

For the writing questions! 21, 22, and 23

21. What is the one fic that got away?

Ha, so many because half the time I get an idea, it just stays in my brain and I decide to let it sort of cook instead of actually writing it down. But I’ll give you one(ish): @vmficrecs posted the prompt “A major protagonist is reimagined as a superhero in a dramatic college AU” (iirc, the prompt that inspired thelastgoodgoldfish’s excellent The Phenomenal Pixie). I remember sitting in my Collection Development class in library school and ENTIRELY plotting TWO stories where Wallace has superpowers (one where he’s born with invisibility, one where the collar in 3x20 malfunctions and he develops electricity manipulation). I scribbled  ~300 words from each into a Google doc before class was over and then neglected to go back and actually, ya know, write the stories, which I contend would actually have been pretty good. But I’m pretty sure that it did inspire me to get my nose to the grindstone and actually finish something from Veronica Mars, which ended in the posting of The Blown Job, so...win some, lose some?

22. Have you cried while writing a fic?

I have, but then I’ve probably cried while doing pretty much everything (reading, watching TV, taking public transit, listening to podcasts, etc.) in my life. I thought that We Do Not Flinch would do it (I even wrote a post about it!) but I actually did the writing dry-eyed. Most recently it was the final chapter of things left behind that got me - not even very much to do with the content, more “I can’t believe I finally made it!” tears.

23. If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it?

This one really tripped me up! If you’d asked me to rewrite one of my own fics, it might have been easier because I reread them all the time and always find flaws and things I wish I could change, but a remix...maybe my Buffy/Angel soul marks AU That Names Were Carved on Us, switching it around to Buffy’s perspective?
