Ok a few reasons why I like the s1 episode Cece Crashes. I will probably miss a bunch but off the top of my sleep deprived head… It’s a big development in the Ness relationship where someone from the outside points it out to Jess … and then Jess starts processing Nick in a different light (if she hadn’t started to subconsciously anyway). It scares her. Shakes her. Her world is flipped upside down and the only reason she reacts so strongly to all of this (ex freaks out and runs out of the car in traffic) is bc she’s scared of her own developing feelings that are there, that she had managed to burry bc Nick is her roommate and it may potentially throw off the delicate loft balance. Also from Nick’s side, him acting sweet to Jess and doing bf things with her like going to the store, and buying her roses 🌹 speaks volumes (grumpy cheap nick?!?). So basically this entire episode for me is so much fun to watch because the writers are basically calling them out on their developing deepening relationship. And the toothbrushing scene at the end when they can’t stop glancing at each other is SO CUTE. Like I can’t with this entire episode. And Nick running back into the loft saying he was so worried looking for her. It’s all these little things combined for me. And then of course I missed the very beginning of the ep when Cece’s dancing and he doesn’t even pay much attention to this smoking hot model who is basically ripping his shirt off. “I’m from the town of Footloose” lol ok I’m done 😁😁

One thing I really love about the earlier seasons of Gilmore Girls is how unpolished and real everyone was allowed to look, even including the main characters. The clothes were ordinary and seemed to be chosen for personality instead of "hotness," Lorelai made weird makeup choices sometimes and Rory had days when her hair was a little frizzy and flyaway... The dress Lorelai "made" Rory for the dance REALLY looked like a homemade dress from cheap polyester satin and a wrinkle in the collar that never seems to lie completely flat... They felt like REAL people!
But the later seasons just don't feel the same. I'm happy for the show and their budget that they got clothing sponsorships, and the clothes are pretty to look at, but Lorelai and Rory look perpetually glossy and glamorous in a way that seems out-of-step with their personalities, income level, and situations (just like every other show!) and I MISS IT! I miss the messiness! College Rory should get to lounge around in her pajamas more, or just... SOMETHING! It just doesn't feel the same!

Is it just me or does the phrase "dumb Darillium River" make your ears ring too?
That phrase hurts me like crazy because it takes away how the post-Manhattan events affected her so deeply. And now that we have the added knowledge that she gets to see her parents in New York even after Manhattan, THORS now presents itself in a different light.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
River's resounding "the Doctor does not and has never loved me" cements the implication that she and the Doctor had a huge row after Manhattan. What would you feel if the love of your life told you he "does not and has never loved" you? Certainly not happy.
Do you know what grief does to one's mind? No matter how brilliant you are, grief changes you. Grief makes you a different person. I would know, having experienced it myself. And River, in her grief, jumped into a headspace that shut out (or tried hard to) the Doctor.
Yes, she should have recognized it was him she had unknowingly dragged along on her space Robin Hood quest, but for her, it isn't him. It wouldn't be. Because that was the last thing she had heard him say.
Grief and pain clouding her mind, she proudly asserts that no, the Doctor isn't there. He won't show up for her. He has never loved her. But of course, she loves him. She's never denied that. But he proves her wrong soon afterwards. Because she is the Woman The Doctor Loves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, yes, on the surface level, "dumb Darillium River" seems to be what THORS had made River to be. But no, it wasn't. It isn't. It was about a grieving River and a chance for the Doctor to right his wrong. (And yes, we were robbed of that kiss. Homie here quite clearly wanted one.)

Wakabas character arc, her need to break out of the ‘normal best friend’ archetype, her desperation to feel special and thus have worth in Ohtori, become extra fascinating when you look at her as a spiritual successor of Usagi’s normal best friend from Sailor Moon, Naru.
Naru has a really interesting character arc in Sailor Moon. She is the first person we see attacked, and she’s what gets Usagi to get in her first fight. This is later paralleled in Utena, when Utena gets in her first duel on Wakaba’s behalf. As Sailor Moon goes on Naru gets attacked more and more, but eventually gets relegated to the background as Usagi gains her other sailor friends and they become more important. Naru makes less appearances, and besides being an occasional victim is completely separated from her former best friend Usagi’s special, double life. However Naru doesn’t take her removal from the narrative ignorantly.
In the second season finale a giant evil crystal has been placed by the villains in the center of Tokyo. Naru sees Usagi running towards it and confronts her about it. “You know what this is don’t you?” She asks her.
Tumblr media
I love all of this for Naru, but all of it also applies exactly to Wakaba. Wakaba who realizes her friend Utena is special in a way she’s not. Who sees the most visual aspects of the massive machine Akio has running Ohtori, but doesn’t know enough to stop it or change it in any material way. Who lashes out at Anthy in her jealousy at the way she’s the most special person in the school, and subtextually how she is becoming more important to Utena than her. Wakaba, like Nanami, wants anything but to be “another fly in the swarm,” a seeming nightmare for the girls of Ohtori.
Even in character design the two mimic each other. Both have brown hair, with a small bow at the back of their head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naru gets to break a bit from her archetypal role at the end, and Wakaba does more so. In the last episode of the series, after Utena has left, we see another girl jumping onto Wakaba and calling her “her prince,” just the same way Wakaba did to Utena in episode 1. It’s not immediate, but Wakabas revolution will come, and she will have her own “normal best friend.”
I really love Wakaba as a spiritual successor to Naru, with Naru’s small insecurities and worry taken to the next level in Wakabas character. And how at the end of the day they may not save or revolutionize the world, but they love their special best friend, and that support is something they hold true until the end.

The most heartbreaking part about the MohkDay break up, is that once again Mohk is all alone. And this time, he didn't make that choice. He wanted to stay, he wanted Day to be by his side. And he was still left alone
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Rung especially, we know that our boy has severe abandonment issues. And even though we can't be certain her death was preventable by him picking up the call, he blames himself for it. The fact that Day and Mohk have only ever spoken about Rung in surface-level conversations (hell I don't think they really ever spoke about Mohk a lot at all), it hurts sooo much more that Day broke up with him after Mohk laid his heart out in front of the whole family.
I saw a bunch of people talking about how Day refuses to do any emotional labour, and I see where they're coming from. But, i gotta disagree. He did not break up with Mohk because of his trauma. He broke up with Mohk because Mohk was willfully destroying his life to stay with Day. I don't want to say his heart was in the right place, but it was in the right area code at least. I genuinely believe that the "you also pity me" was an excuse because he didn't want to hold Mohk back. I want to believe that he didn't have the time to understand the implications of what Mohk meant when he talked about Rung and he regretted it later.
(I will live in that lie till I'm told otherwise)
But Mohk has never been a fighter for himself. He'll fight in a heartbeat for what Day or Porjai need. He'll put himself in harm's way to protect those he love. But the moment he has to fight for himself, he'll back out. I don't know if this is a post-ep1 flashback thing, but that is what the show has established for us. And so as gut wrenching as his "if that's what you want" is, it's very in character for him.
Tumblr media
But just to be clear, now that I've been a rational adult about this analysis of this show and characters. FUCK ALL OF THIS. Like straight up wtf? Who asked for an ep11 conflict huh? Who? P'Aof?? I love you, but WHYYY. My absolute green flag of a man does not deserve this nonsense after everything he's done. So FIX THIS RIGHT NOW.

Van as storyteller. Van, with a miserable home life, a place where she has to raise herself. Van, who’s probably been telling herself stories to ward off the loneliness for years. Van, who sees stories as escape.
Van, who lands in the woods and starts telling stories aloud. Van, who has all these movies living inside her head, who lets them out to make everyone else feel less alone. Van, who takes a campfire dynamic and turns the dial to eleven, because stories are comfort, stories are safety, stories are home.
Van, who understands more than anyone expects expressly because of stories. Van, who sees the situation through the lens of a narrative arc. Beginning. Middle. End. Van, who watches the plot unfold, watches the twists and turns, and can’t stop telling the story aloud. Van, who knows all too well what kind of story they’ve landed in.
Van, who can’t stop telling the story now. Van, who sees the truth behind the tale. Van, who is finally done regurgitating the narratives that bring her comfort, who turns instead to the ones that will keep them alive. Van, who understands stories are sometimes the only way out, the only way to escape.

How Puffballs/Astrals/Orbs/Eldritch abominations carry around their babies, a helpful guide.
Having a spherical body with short limbs gives some unique challenges for day-to-day life, especially when carrying another smaller orb with you.
Still, the puffballs are very careful with their young and will often go to great lengths to ensure they're safe and sound. Especially after the war against Nightmare began and their populations dimmed.
Baby baskets are the most common solution for travelling parents, they're light, keep the hands free, practical and relatively easy to make/repair. The straps are angled and often have ways to regulate their length, and the contraption as a whole can be made of almost anything flexible. Still, regular baskets aren’t suited to flying at high speeds, so caretakers are advised to keep flights slow and avoid fights. Astrals with children are relatively vulnerable and rely on other group members for protection.
Older children also hang out on their parents’ backs without the basket, their hands/paws are stronger and they can safely hold on to older orbs even during flight. Teens are rarely seen doing this as well, particularly during stressful/dangerous situations.
Strollers are more present in astral towns since nomadic groups find them too heavy and impractical to carry around. The stroller’s main advantage is that it can carry multiple puffs at once (which is already rare) and gives more protection and comfort than the baskets. They can vary a lot in shape and size, but often have a spherical shape overall.
Although travellers don’t usually have strollers, it’s not unheard of for them to just build a makeshift one whenever the need arises... or when they just wanna go really fast and are tired of carrying kids on their back.
And lastly, “I’ve been juggling parenting, my job, my hobbies, my duty as a knight, and saving the world, and also haven’t slept in 73 hours”, Meta Knight’s favourite.

What I love about Jess's camel corduroy coat (oooh, alliteration!) from Season 2 is that it's SO CLEARLY second-hand. The style is out-of-date, and it's obviously too big for him. We know from the show that Liz didn't send the rest of Jess's things until Springtime, so all the clothing he had for the entire winter was whatever fit in that duffle bag he arrived with, or whatever Luke could provide for him. The coat, then, was probably either a thrift store purchase or possibly an old coat belonging to Luke himself.
