NGL I know its a controversial scene, but I genuinely love the "Adult Kiss" scene from End of Eva.
Like I know some people say it's "Out of Character" for Misato but I ask you how???? Like half the entire series is hammering into you that this woman, despite having at least some form of familial love for Shinji, is entirely willing to toss both it and her morals aside to get him to pilot. Like this woman, multiple times, explicitly ignores the severe trauma piloting inflicts onto Shinji to guilt him into it because "he has to". So no, I do not think its OOC for her to offer an "Adult Kiss" to him on her deathbed if he gets into the Eva. She knows he's desperate for any sort of affection at this point and that it will get him to pilot so of course she'll toss aside morals and decency to do it.
And yes its disgusting, its awful, and that the point. You are supposed to look at this scene in horror and go "what the fuck is going on???" You're supposed to despise her for it, to thinks she's an awful human being, because she's explicitly offering a 14 year old the promise of sex (that she knows she will never be able to fulfill) if he will just get in the fucking robot again and this is a bad thing.
I won't speak to directorial intent because I A: am not in contact with Hideki Anno (despite fervently desiring to pick his brain about Shin Kamen Rider) B: do not speak Japanese so cannot read his interviews unless its through the lens of a (potentially flawed) translator and C: Am too fucking lazy to look up said interviews anyways. But I will say that, whether retroactively or not, Eva is a genuinely good commentary on the "Relatable Angsty Teenage Protagonist" because Shinji is incredibly relatable when he first shows up. Poor self-esteem, absent parents, issues connecting with people, etc. But as the series goes on and Shinji descends further and further to start to relate less and less and start to wonder "Why aren't any of these adults seeing. Why do they seem to miss or ignore the obvious traumas Shinji and Asuka have and why do they continue to push them to do something that only hurts them. Why don't they question the narrative, of why the teens are the only ones who can Pilot or whether its even true or not?"
TL;DR yes Misato is an awful human being, and yes just about everything she does in EoE is entirely in character for her
Honestly I think so many people just have bad EVA opinions??? Maybe it was just the edgy chan culture at the time the show was popular but I don't understand how people can watch NGE and think. "Wow this Shinji kid sure is annoying he should stop complaining so much" like HELLO?? He has literally experienced the pain of being shot and having his limbs pulled off etc like fatal fucking injuries. And he goes through all this shit and is so clearly traumatized and everybody is such an asshole to him, his mom's dead, Asuka is a bitch, Rei isn't even a real person and his dad is notoriously the most abusive anime dad of all time. The closest thing he has for support is Misato who's a barely functioning alcoholic and still at the end of the day kowtows to her superiors and will throw Shinji under the bus if she absolutely has to. I'm sorry but I think Shinji can cry and complain as much as he wants
So, an impression I got when watching the original Evangelion for the first time, and an interpretation that I’ve never seen anyone else share, was that some of the angels were non-hostile and trying to communicate, but just so alien that their attempts were perceived as attacks.
Everybody seems to take it as given that all angels are deliberately trying to destroy humanity. IDK, maybe my biases and expectations were set by first contact sci-fi like Solaris and Rendezvous with Rama, where Evangelion is riffing more on alien invasion stories like Ultraman and Gerry Anderson's UFO.
It would justify Shinji’s reluctance to fight though, that on some instinctive level he knows NERV is lying to him about its necessity. We have seen that they are willing to be duplicitous in order to eliminate threats to the Human Instrumentality Project, like with sabotaging Jet Alone. Thematically, it would fit with some of NGE’s influences like Gundam and Ideon.
Of course, Kaworu kind of pokes a hole in this idea. He clearly can communicate with and understand humans, yet still seemingly--if regretfully--engages in actions that everybody seems to take for granted will lead to humankind's extinction. It seems like he can't fight it, he asks Shinji to kill him like it's the only way to stop it.
@matricideawards IT IS TIME FOR THE ASUKA PROPAGANDA (spoilers for NGE obviously)
ASUKA SORYUU LANGLEY. MOMMY ISSUES SUPREME!! When she was four years old an experiment caused her mother to go insane. Her mother basically believed that this doll was her child and doted on it while neglecting Asuka and she completely forgot that Asuka was her daughter. Asuka was in training to become an Evangelion pilot and at the time she did sacrificed nearly anything to be the best because she thought that if she worked hard enough her mother might remember her. On the day she was selected to become an Evangelion pilot she ran to find her mother and tell her the news only to stumble upon her mother’s body as she had committed suicide. From there on Asuka developed a complex where she strove to get any attention she could as a response from being neglected as a child and tried to turn herself into a commodity so that people would like her. Shortly after her mom died her dad wouldn’t pay any attention to her and only treated women like a commodity which led to Asuka shelling herself out to older men as she thought it was the only way she could be loved or get any attention.
ASUKA HAS MOMMY ISSUES, SHE HAS HER ENTIRE PERSONALITY FORMED AROUND THE TRAUMA.
Every time I watch the scene from The End of Evangelion where Asuka & EVA Unit-02 triumphantly rising up from the lake and going to town on all the SEELE-hired JSSDF soldiers who just decimated all of NERV headquarters...
...I can't help but be reminded of these two iconic scenes of Wolverine & Kitty Pryde from X-Men!
Asuka be like:
"You made your move SEELE. Good move... NOW IT'S MY TURN!"
