This Way — Nicky Nichols
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis: You and Nicky kissed a few months ago, yet Nicky still would not admit what happened.
Word Count: 556
Warnings: sad one, longing for a relationship, swearing, kissing, physical affection
Tumblr media
You and Nicky were tigther than a knot. You immeditaley fell under her trap when you were sent to Litchfield. A few months ago, after a solid year together, you and Nicky exchanged a kiss in the chapel.
Ever since that day, Nicky didn't want to talk about it. For the first few weeks after, she even ignored you. She was scared of your reaction, and yet you somehow convinced her to talk to you if only you avoid that subject matter.
It was now yours and Nicky's day off from electrical. And Nicky Nichols was bored. So she invited you to her bunk.
Straddling the Nichols, you applied eyeliner to her, holding Nicky's chin in her hand, making sure that Nicky's movements didn't ruin you trying to emulate her style.
"Why are you letting me do this?" You asked.
Looking at Nicky's smirk on her face, you decided to tease her. Leaning down to her ear, you whispered, "Is it because I help fix the sink today? Did my unpaid heroism turn you on?"
"Sure." Nicky sarcastically said as she teasingly bit her lip. "It's not that I just can't be bothered today."
Faking gasping, you placed a hand onto your heart. "You're using me!"
"Have you met me?" Nicky asked with laugh.
Joining in with the laugh, you sarcastically joked, "Oh no. Sorry random woman who I am literally sitting on top of, what's your name?"
"My name's Nichols Nicky, you?" Nicky played along, holding out her hand to shake which you took, introducing herself, "Y/n Y/l/n."
"Well then, Y/n Y/ln, what's your opinion on the Red situation?" Nicky asked, her tone shifting. Red had stopped sitting or talking regularly to the family, and yes it was concerning, but you didn't want to talk about it.
"My opinion is that you should just shut up and let me finish this eye." You said as tried to finish the eyeliner on the left side of Nicky's face.
"No seriously, okay? Someone needs to help her." Nicky stressed. "It's like Red doesn't want to talk about it."
Hearing this, you sighed and decided to ask a question that had taken over your thoughts for months. "When are we gonna talk about it?"
"About what?" Nicky questioned, raising her eyebrows. "Red leaving the kitchen? We are."
"Nick, don't be stupid." You said, her tone changing from the previous teasing.
Laughing, Nicky shook her head, making you grab her chin so she wouldn't move her head too much. "No, I'm serious. I don't know what you're talking about."
"The kiss." You responded.
Rolling her eyes, Nicky sighed, "Y/n, that was 3 months ago."
"I know, but we never properly talked about it, just ignored it." You justified the question.
"Well it didn't mean anything, it was my fault. I was lonely." Nicky shrugged. It was partly the truth but Nicky didn't want to outright say that she did because she's hopelessly in love with her best friend who didn't think even loved her back. And so she resorted to, "Plus I like us this way."
"Me too." You admitted, half-heartedly. It was better off you staying friends than never talking to each other again. And so you placed a hand on the side of her face, you smiled. "Now then, let me do your makeup, you lazy asshole."

"Jesus, what happened to you?" Stan asks, staring at the bandaid covering Kyle's cheek.
Kyle scratches the top of his head, "Kenny."
"Damn he got you good, personally I wouldn't let something like that slide, but.. you know to each their own." Clyde teased.
Kyle stares at Clyde blankly and he just shrugs.
"Anyways.. are you two good? Like Kenny being here is.. obviously less than ideal, how are you guys holding up?" Nichole questioned.
You shrug, "I'm.. personally okay, Kyle took care of it for me.. obviously," You gesture towards his face, "I don't think Kenny'll bother me for a while, if he does.. I'll call you guys."
Stan frowns, "Doesn't Kenny have keys to your apartment?"
You slap your hand against your forehead, "Fuck, dude you're right."
Nichole puts a hand on your shoulder reassuringly, "You can stay with me for the next while as you get those locks changed."
You smile at her, "Thanks Nicky, you're the best."
"Of course!"
Clyde makes a sudden noise of excitement. "We got your gifts Y/n! Here!" He exclaims, handing you the bag he was holding and you take it.
"Thanks Clyde, uhmmm.. should I open them now.. or..?"
Stan shakes his head, "It'd actually be better to open them later, we have places to be!"
"Oh you're just a hater, you just don't want to get one upped by Clyde Donovan."
"Uh.. being one upped by you is definitely not my concern, but whatever you say."
"Boys.. your gifts are infinitesimal compared to mine." Nichole boasts.
Stan and Clyde turn to each other before turning to Nichole and bursting out with laughter. You and Kyle even sit giggling at the situation.
"WHAT? What are you guys laughing at?" Nichole shrieks.
"INFINITESIMAL?" Stan exclaims.
Clyde holds his finger up, "Infinitesimal." He says with that nerd voice.
"Oh I hate you BOTH so much and YOU TWO," She turns to point a finger at you and Kyle, "You're just gonna sit there as they laugh and make fun of me?"
You tried suppressing your laugh, "I'm.. I'm sorry Nichole they're kinda right for this. Nobody says words like that."
Kyle nods his head along with what you're saying.
"You all... I hate you all so badly."
You chuckle, holding up Clyde's gift, "I'll open it later how about that Clyde?"
"Mmmhmm, that works, as long as mine's first."
"Of course."
You set Clyde's gift down on your coffee table and Nichole and Stan set theirs beside it. The group starts to head out the door and you and Kyle put your shoes on and follow after, "So.. where we all going today?"
Stan grins, "Bowling."
Clyde whoops and jumps excited, "OH! I'm gonna kick your guys' asses. Get ready!"
Tumblr media
"So.. Clyde what was that about whooping our asses?" Nichole smirks.
The tallied up score sat on the tv screen, Nichole had won with a score of 219, followed up by Stan at 201, Kyle at 183, and you managed to get 172. But Clyde came in last.. with a whopping 155.
"Don't.. I don't wanna hear it, Nichole." Clyde groaned, head in his hands.
Kyle pats Clyde's back, "You win some you lose some bro.. you just happened to lose."
"Oh thanks Kyle that reassures me soooooo much."
Kyle turns to the rest of you with wide eyes, mouthing an 'okay...' and Stan gets up, "That concludes our game.. you guys wanna look at what they got at the arcade part?"
"Absolutely!" Clyde springs up, "Now this.. is where I successfully win."
"Win at what?" You ask.
Clyde turns to you with a glint in his eye, "Everything.. my dear Y/n." and you roll your eyes.
Kyle going off to conclude the game with the workers and everyone else chatters about, following Stan towards the arcade games section of the bowling alley.
Tumblr media
You stand next to Stan, paying your points for a zombie shooter game.
"So..." Stan trails off, "How are you holding up?"
"What do you mean?" You eyebrows furrow, taking a quick glance at Stan as he goes through the level modes.
"Well.. I mean you're bouncing back relatively quickly you know?"
"Is..is that bad?"
Stan sighs, selecting a level, "It depends.. have you managed to fully process everything? Or have you only managed to fully absorb everything happening on a surface level?"
You stood there, shocked. One, the level of maturity coming from Stan was outrageous, nothing against him of course but you never thought he could be so perceptive, good on Wendy. He had a point though.. had you managed to fully process everything? You were doing fine.. you believed.
You weren't as depressed about the situation as you were. You were mainly angry and upset that Kenny had the gall to do that to you, that Red did that to you, but you realized that tears spent on him wasn't going to fix anything. You always had a strict policy of no forgiveness towards cheaters and once a cheater always a cheater, so you really disliked the idea of keeping Kenny on the forethought of your mind, you wouldn't give him that.
"Dude you're gonna die." Stan casually mentioned, dragging you out of your thoughts.
You perk up, immediately getting into kill zombie mode, "Why would you ask this as we play this game."
Stan's face reddens, "Yeah that's not.. my proudest moment, but I couldn't stop myself from asking you."
You headshot a zombie in game, "I appreciate it, I'm doing okay, promise.. I'm hurting a lot less than I think I would.. considering how long Kenny and I were together but.. I have a strict mind policy towards cheaters and that's minimal tears shed for those who cheat."
Stan tilts his head at that with a nod, "Word, that's a good policy to have."
"It's the best."
Stan and you continue to play the level up until the "pay points to continue" pops up, Stan groans, "Oh I hate cash grab games."
You shrug, "The price to pay for games that are actually fun."
Stan puts the toy gun back into the slot and as you do the same he turns to look at you, "You'd come to me.. right? If anything haywire happens? If not me literally anyone? Nichole? Kyle? I'd.. say Clyde but he might not be the best.."
You smile bittersweetly, "Of course Stan. I.. promise. I really do swear that.. if something hits me mentally, I'll come to you, or at least someone."
Stan breathes a sigh of relief, "Good.. Wendy's been dying to ask about you too by the way, she was nervous on reaching out because she wanted to give you enough space to cope through it too. I'll let her know you're good and that you'll.. reach out to her soon?"
You kick your heel into the carpet, "You can do that, I feel bad.. I've kinda left everyone on ghost for a bit."
"Yeah, you really know how to worry people.."
"Sorry.."
"Oh, I didn't mean it like.." Stan cringes at himself, "I am horrible at words, I didn't mean it like that, swear, that sounded awful oh God."
"Stan.. dude it's alright. I... got how you meant it."
Stan just nods and looks around the arcade arena, "Uhm.. you wanna play another game or..?"
You hum, "Yeah, let's play those racing games those are always fun to do right?."
"Oh hell yeah dude, let's go." Stan heads over to the motorcycle racing games, unfortunately for the both of you, Kyle and Clyde were already on it and the other was out of order.
"Sorry guys, you'll have to wait, I'm tryna kick Kyle's ass right now." Clyde shouted, unable to really hear himself due to the fans blowing right into his face.
Nichole, who was watching the two play look at you too, "Clyde's losing again."
"Again? This has got to be worst losing streak I've seen him have." You remarked.
"Mmmhmmm." Nichole hummed in agreement, "Sure is."
You take a look at both their screens, Kyle was way ahead of Clyde by the looks of it and by the look on his face he was determined to win. Clyde looks partly like he was desperate to win and that he was about to fall off the machine and give up.
Their game ends with Kyle winning and Clyde trying to finish with at least beating a few NPC characters, "Kyle, man, how did you get so good at these games?"
"Stan and I used to play these sort of games all the time growing up, arcade games was our thing."
You groan, "Does this mean I'm gonna lose against him?"
Kyle and Stan both chuckle, "Yup! The only person who's better than me at these games is Stan."
"Just my luck."
"Don't worry, Y/n, I'll go easy on ya." Stan winks.
Clyde finishes his lap and sits on the machine in despair, "I can't believe I lost... Nichole go against me in air hockey NOW, I need a win."
"Bitch, what part of you thinks you're gonna win against me in air hockey?" Nichole asks, bewildered.
Clyde hops off the machine, "I don't know but I know."
They walk over towards the air hockey table and you and Stan get on the motorcycle game and Kyle stays back to watch you two play.
"I'll let you choose the map." Stan says, using his points to start a new game.
"Watch me end up picking the hardest map.." You sigh, scrolling over the various maps to play before picking one that looked relatively easy.
The game starts and you both start off somewhat bad, Stan having not realized the game started and you not knowing half the controls.
The game's controls actually wasn't that bad, but trying to go around corners was a lot harder than doing it in Mario Kart, the constant tilt of the fake motorcycle made it difficult to find a proper balance.
You took a glance at Stan, who had a four person lead on you right now and grimaced when you saw how well he was doing.
"Here," Kyle stood behind you, leaning closer to your ear so you could hear him over the fans, "Scooch back a bit and distribute your weight to more where you're sitting rather than leaning too much forward."
You follow his instructions until your back meets his hand, indicating you're sitting where you should be, embarrassment floods your body and he continues helping you out, "Yeah there you go.. see? You want to keep your weight centralized on these things. That's the good thing about these arcade ones, you only have to keep your balance in the middle, rather than worrying about other things."
Stan notices out of the corner of his eye and briefly pauses, nearly ruining his lead on an NPC, "KYLE" he shouts, scaring the both of you, "Are you helping her? Oh my god you two are cheaters!"
Kyle backs away a bit, "Just a little.. she's up against you of all people Stan.. a little help doesn't hurt anybody."
"Just a little she's up against you of all people Stan." Stan mimics with a high pitch voice before clearing his throat and speaking again at his normal pitch, "Don't care, Y/n is doing is fine! Better than Clyde too, he was behind you by seven people, she just passed another NPC! See we have a three person difference now!"
Kyle crosses his arms and waits for the two of you to finish, "Yeah yeah, got it Stan."
The two of you finish your game in the same lineup, Stan first, and you in fourth. "See that was pretty good Y/n!" Stan compliments.
"Thanks," You hop off the machine, "Where'd the other two go again?"
"Air hockey." Kyle replied, checking his watch, "However.... the alley looks as if it's closing soon."
"Huh?" Stan turns to look at Kyle, "How'd you know?"
"It's 9:45 and the worker mentioned something about them closing at 10, we probably have time for like one more game before they close out the arcade."
"Mann... let's go get Clyde and Nichole."
The three of you head towards the intense ongoing game of air hockey, "You're still playing?" You inquire.
"Yup! I paid for 5 more minutes and I'm up four points and I intend on keeping that four point lead." Clyde says, his focus entirely on the game.
Nichole is well focused too, head and eyes following every movement of the puck flying around.
The puck flies towards Clyde's side and he jabs it quickly and it flies sliding into the goal of Nichole's side, "WOOHOOOOOO FIVE POINT LEAD BABY LETS GO!" Clyde punches the air in celebration.
"Oh don't celebrate yet, Donovan. We still got three minutes and I plan on destroying you in those three minutes." Nichole jeered, eyes narrowing on the puck, she hits it as soon as the air is felt against her skin, landing the puck cleanly into the goal of Clyde's side of the table.
"Oh what the hell, Nichole, that was a cheap shot!"
She shrugs, "Still got it in though."
The two continue on as the three of you watch and then soon the buzzer goes off, ending the game, Clyde having won.
"YES YES YES YES YES" Clyde exclaims, jumping around the table, "I DID IT I DID IT I DID IT!"
Nichole rolls her eyes, "We get it.. you did it.."
"You're just mad you lost against me at this."
"Oh shut it Clyde."
"Nuh uhh... you can't make me shut up you're a loserrrrr and winners make the rules."
"???? The hell are you on about?"
"Okayy.. let's go before we get kicked out, I can feel the workers' eyes boring into our skulls." Kyle stammers, ushering the group towards the door, mouthing a 'Sorry, so sorry' to the worker he passes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group stood in front of your apartment door, keeping the conversation going as to prevent you from going inside by yourself.
"You're sure you wanna stay here for the night?" Nichole asks you, worry laced in her tone.
"I'm sure Nichole.. I promise nothing is gonna happen to me tonight."
"What about if we stay the night here? Hm? Can we do that?" Clyde pleads with you.
"You guys don't have any clothes over here! I.. where would you all even fit? My apartment isn't that big you guys."
"Stan and Kyle can cuddle together on the couch, boom done. I can take the floor, boom done. Nichole and you can sleep in your room, boom done." Clyde quickly states.
"Yeah, that would wo- Stan and Kyle do what..?" Stan sputtered eyebrow raised.
Clyde looks over at Stan with a bright smile on his face before turning back to you, "See! Problem solved!"
"What about the clothes..?" You pointed out.
"......If we get our clothes and meet back in less than an hour would you.. agree..?"
"...45 minutes."
The group cheers and run down your apartment hallway, "BE BACK SOON Y/N!!"

Hospital Visits
Nicky Nichols X Reader
TW - OD'ing
Reader has to leave a case debriefing because Nicky is in the Hospital for OD'ing
Delilah POV
I woke up to the sunlight shining through the curtains. I turned over to see my beautiful girlfriend Nicky. She was gorgeous with the sun shining across her face, her curly hair spread around her head, and she looked serene and the most calm I had ever seen her. Unfortunately, my alarm went off, breaking the peace, though luckily, Nick stayed asleep. I got up, changed into my work clothes, and went into the kitchen to make my morning coffee. As I finished my cup and got my gun and badge, arms snaked around my waist.
“You weren’t planning on leaving without saying goodbye, were you, Lilah?” Nicky said, her distinctive rasp even more apparent with her morning voice.
“Of course not, darling. I need my morning kisses too, you know,” I replied. I turned around in her arms and put my arms around her neck. She smiled at me and leaned in for a kiss. As we pulled away and I went to put my cup in the sink, she straightened out my blazer, gave me one more kiss, and walked back into our bedroom. She was wearing my shirt and her underwear, “Nice ass, Nichols,” I called after her. She turned around, blew me a kiss, and continued into our room. I finished getting my things and walked out of my apartment.
Our day had been slow with only paperwork and no cases, that is until after lunch. We got called into the meeting room and Penelope started the debriefing. “Is that a-” I got cut off by my phone ringing. The caller ID said “George Washington University Hospital” and I knew that that was a hospital near my home. I picked up.
“Is this SSA Delilah Brown?” A nurse asked.
“Yes this is, is there something wrong?” I replied.
“Your girlfriend, Nicky Nichols, overdosed this morning at around 10 a.m.”
“WHAT?!” I said shocked
“She is alright and was moved out of the ICU 30 minutes ago. She is awake and is asking for you,” The nurse told me.
“Um, alright. Let her know I’ll be there in 45 minutes,” I said.
“Alright, I will,” She replied.
“Thank you,” I said, “Goodbye.” I sat there for a moment still trying to process things before I gathered my things to leave. “Hotch, Nicky OD’d and I have to go,” I said. Hotch was the only one who knew of my relationship because I didn’t want judgment for dating a former felon.
“Ok. I thought she stopped using,” He replied. “Me too,” I sighed, running my hands through my hair, “I’ll probably be spending a few days in the hospital so if you need anything on this case, call me, I’ll do my best to help.”
I walked into the hospital and went up to the front desk. “Can you tell me what room Nicky Nichols is in, please? I’m her girlfriend,” I asked.
“Floor 5, Room 606,” She replied.
“Thank you,” I said. I got up to her floor and walked to her room. I knocked on the door and heard a raspy “Come in”.
“Aww, baby. How are you feeling?” I asked her.
“A little better,” She said, her voice a little slurred, “Can you lay with me, please?”
I walked over to her side, put my bag down on a chair, and lay down next to her on the bed. She leaned into my chest.
“I’m sorry…I didn’t want to use again but I just…had to…” Nicky said, ashamed.
“I know, darling. I’m not mad at you, I promise. All this means is that we need to try rehab or therapy again. Relapsing is a part of it and that's okay. I know that it is off-putting and makes you feel bad but you are strong. I know that I sound annoyingly sappy but sometimes sap is necessary,” I told her.
“Normally I don't like it, but it’s comforting right now,” She replied.
“That’s good, but you should get some rest. I’ll be here, love,” I said.
After a couple of days, the team was back from the case. I helped the team as much as I could from Nicky’s room. A nurse came in and said that a group of FBI agents wanted to come in and see us. “Do you want to meet my team, baby?” I asked. I was still lying next to her.
“Um, sure,” She replied.
The team walked in and said hi. I was honestly really excited for the two most important parts of my life, my work family and the love of my life coming together finally felt almost unreal.
“Hi! You’re so pretty. I knew that Lilah would date someone pretty but you’re so beautiful! I love your hair,” Penny squealed.
The team stayed for about an hour and then the visiting hours ended, and they left.
“So, what did you think of my team?” I asked.
“I think I’ll get along with Morgan and Emily really well but I had a good time meeting them,” Nicky said, “I know that you had a lot of fun too because you had the biggest smile I’ve seen on your face.” She had a teasing smile on her face.
“I did enjoy it,” I admitted, “So, how does pasta at Rossi’s next week sound?"

Secret Seduction
- Warnings: Smut, Gun play, Angst, Strap on, Alot of dirty talk, Hot angry Nicky
- Words: 1107
- Pairings: Str!pper Fem Reader X CEO!Mafia Nicky Nichols
Summary:
When losing your best friend and not seeing her until you were 20. You didn't expect her to be here at the club you worked at, You being her favourite dancer aswell. But will she remember you. Like you remember her.
Y/N's pov:
It was a Friday night and I was getting ready in my dressing room. Today is the day I'm gonna tell Nicky who I really am, but scared she'll freak out and leave me and never come back. But hopefully that doesn't happen.
Nicky doesn't know I'm actually her long lost best friend. I only realised it was her because she signed with her last name. Nichols. I always loved that name, kinda wanted to be a Nichols one day. But that would've never happened.
However she only didn't know who I am because I go by. Bunny, us dancers have to hide our identity for privacy reasons so I picked that name. Because she'd always call me that as a kid. It was a cute nickname tho, I loved it. Everytime she called me it, I'd get this weird feeling. Butterflies, I think that's what you call it.
Even my outfit was a bunny, I thought it'll be cute to match the outfit with my name. i wore a sparkly red lacey two piece, black fishnets, paired with black heels and a cute bunny tail to match and black bunny ears. I also had a mask just for that extra secrecy. My makeup was dark with a red lip to bring it out.
It was now 11:00 pm and time for me to go on stage. Slowly walking on red lights beemed in my face. As I See Red starts playing, i slowly walked over to the pole and began my dance.
Pushed close to the pole my fingers glide over the metal as my head tilts back, my fingertips sliding down my neck. Turning around i slide down the pole gliding my hands up my body lifting my hair, my eyes catch hers a smirk plastered on her lips as she leans back in her chair, eyes scanning over my body. Looking back at her lips she mouths "hot" followed along with a wink. I bit my lip back at her before sliding on to the floor, my butt proped up in the air bouncing when i hit the floor. Sliding back up off the floor i grip the pole standing up and tilting my head back again and swinging on it. As the music stops i look back at Nicky once more mouthing "find me after this" before stepping off the stage.
Walking towards my dressing room to freshen up someone grabs me, pressing their lips to mine. "get the fuck off of me" i shout pushing away the stranger. "Bunny calm down its me" Nicky spoke. "Nicky" i say with a soft voice "yeah princess" "you looked so hot out there sugar, when can i see this beautiful face of yours" she replied trying to lift off my mask. "not yet you know the rules Nicky" i laughed. "yeah i know but i like breaking the rules" her hands sliding up my curves pulling me closer to her capturing my lips in a passionate kiss. "ok ok thats enough let me go freshen up" i spoke lightly pushing her off me "ok but dont be too long, i'll wait for you sugar" smiling at her before walking into the dressing room.
I decided to change my outfit to a black version of the one i was already wearing and touched up my makeup. Heading back out i couldnt find Nicky anywhere "she went into the red private room" one of the security guards said i just nodded and walked to find her.
Arriving at the door i just walked in to see Nicky there leaned back in a chair manspread holding a bottle of vodka. "Bunny your back come here" she says while moving her finger in a 'come over here' gesture. Shutting the door behind me i slowly walk over to her sitting down on her lap i groan feeling the toy through her pants. "be a good girl and you can have it" "but what if i dont want to be good" i wine "well then i'll punish you" she smirks "oh really?" "Yeah I'll punish that pretty pussy of yours" she says sliding her hands down to my thighs gripping them. As a small moan escapes my lips.
"Now your gonna do what i say okay bunny" she whispers in my ear. "Yes" I reply "Yes what?" "Yes Nicky" i whisper "good girl" she says sending shivers down my spine. "now take that mask off for me sugar" my heart starts to race hearing them words, 'fuck' i thought to myself. She cant know who i am, this wont go well. "i- i cant, remember.." i stuttered "oh but you can baby" she spoke trying to lift the mask. "Nicky seriously i cant. You wont like me no more if i do" i say turning away. "Thats not true i'll always like you" she says grabbing my chin turning me to face her. "okay" here goes nothing. I look deep in her dark brown eyes my hand on my mask. 3.. 2.. 1. "y/n.. " she says in confusion "Nicky i can explain" she pushes me off her and takes out her gun. "Nicky please I'm sorry" "I haven't seen you for 20 years and now your a stripper care to explain y/n"  i dont answer her. Fear covers my face as she comes closer holding the gun in my face "fucking answer me y/n, did you forget that i was a mafia leader baby huh?" "Nicky when I- when i saw you. i was too afraid to say something so I thought pretending to not know you was.. better" I say with my head down.
"Y/n you could've told me and not make me believe this lie" she spoke. "Do you hate me? Are you gonna kill me now?" I say as a tear falls from my eye "No I'm not gonna kill you, but I am gonna make you regret what you did. So on your knees princess" she spoke pointing the gun in a downward position pushing me down to the floor.
A/N: sorry I haven't posted in awhile i haven't had much motivation but I will try to post sometimes.

A/N I haven't written for this pair in a long time and to be honest, I've missed them. The below song inspired this idea of mine and I decided to link it to this drabble . This takes place right before Collette's wedding in Paris.

"Hello?" Nicky hit the speaker button while she finished hanging costumes back in their places.
"Hey!" Her sister, Emily, greeted. "I won't be able to go out tonight."
"How come?"
"Jules and Izzy flew in to surprise me!" Emily responded excitedly.
Nicky smiled at hearing her little sister sound more like her old self. Ever since the death of their father, Emily Beaumont had become more withdrawn.
Being in Hollywood these last couple of months had helped the Beaumont sisters and their mother come to terms with losing Maxwell.
It had also helped Nicky get over breaking things off with her true love.
Of course, Jackson probably wasn't that anymore.
At least, it seemed that way. She certainly hadn't heard from him since her father died. She thought perhaps he would want to get back with her after the days of holding her while she cried.
Nobody could comfort her like Jax.
"You can come with us!" Emily quickly spoke up. "Or do you want to make plans with Scott?"
"Scott is shooting on location this week." Nicky explained. "It's been a long day so I think I'll just stay in for the night."
"You sure?" Emily asked. "We Beaumont's have to stick together."
Nicky grinned. "I'm sure, Em. Give my love to Jules and Izzy."
"I will!" Emily hesitated. "Um, they didn't come alone."
Nicky set her phone down while reaching for some boxes on a high shelf. "Did Alec come to?"
The thought of seeing one of her best friends made her rethink her relaxation plans.
"No, but, um," Emily took a deep breath, "Jax tagged along."
A box filled with hats slipped through Nicky's fingers, struck her head, and tumbled to the floor.
"Nicky!" Emily cried when she heard the commotion. "Are you okay?!"
"Yeah." Nicky rubbed her head. "The Bridgerton clumsiness struck again."
"Oh." Emily replied.
Both girls knew it wasn't their mother's genes that caused that mishap. It all centered upon the heir to the Lythikos duchy.
"Did the girls say why Jax decided to come here?" Nicky frowned somewhat.
The man she knew preferred to remain in Cordonia when not forced to travel for his duties for the Crown. And if he did wish to travel, he typically went to national parks for camping and whatnot.
Not to crowded cities like Los Angeles.
"Jules didn't say." Emily replied. "You want me to ask?"
Nicky bit down on her lip. It wasn't her business anymore to know why Jackson did anything.
"No. I was just curious." Nicky finished picking up the stray hats. "Go out and have a good time for me."
"Will do." Emily promissd, her joy returning.
Nicky watched her screen dim after the call ended.
Perhaps...no...maybe...
Her fingers clearly had a mind of their own as she went to her contacts. The face that she thought the handsomest popped up with a shy smile gracing his lips.
Her fingers hovered over the call button. She then let her hand fall to her side.
She cleared her screen then gathered her things together to go home.
******************
"Mom!" Nicky yelled as she walked through the house the Beaumont ladies were renting. "I'm home!"
"In here!" Her mother called out from the kitchen.
"You won't believe the day I had." Nicky paused when she got to the kitchen door.
Her smile grew wide to see Thomas Hunt there.
"Uncle Thomas!" She went over and gave him a brief hug.
He chuckled softly over the uncle part both Emily and Nicky insisted on referring to him.
Nicky couldn't help but be thrilled he was back over, visiting with her mother. He'd been a huge help to them when they decided to put some distance between them and Cordonia after Nicky's infamous breakup with Jackson and Maxwell's death. He'd found their California home, took care of all the arrangements, and made certain to get Nicky working with Addison Sinclaire.
Thomas also had a way of giving their mother what she needed while grieving. Their friendship through the years allowed him to know when to push her into going out and getting her mind off of losing her husband. He also knew when to simply allow her to cry and vent the unfairness of it all.
He'd somehow become her mom's new source of comfort.
"Help me, Nichole." Thomas insisted. "Amanda insists that I have to go to a faculty dinner tonight."
"It is in your honor." Amanda teased.
"You're being honored?" Nicky asked.
"When you get to be my age, people quickly throw dinners and awards at you because they assume you are at death's door." He grumbled. "And your mother believes I should accept every single one of them."
Amanda rolled her eyes at her daughter. "You know I'm right."
"I think you should go." Nicky giggled when he groaned.
He eyed Amanda. "If I have to go, then you have to also."
Amanda looked up in surprise. "Me? Why do I have to?"
"Because you are forcing me." He proclaimed. "And misery loves company."
His frown eased when both ladies burst out laughing.
"Fine." Amanda sighed. "The girls were going out anyway. "
Nicky bit back that she was staying behind tonight.
She watched with a dimpled grin as the two discussed how long it would take to get ready.
"I'll be back here by seven thirty." Thomas told her on his way out. "No need to go full out formal dress wise. This is supposed to be a quiet dinner." He snorted while shaking his head. "Which with many of the teachers there, it is bound to be dull."
Nicky laughed while following him to shut the door. Checking to make sure her mother was nowhere near to overhear them, she reached out and grasped Thomas's hand.
"Thank you." She whispered. "For getting her not only to laugh again but to also get back out and do normal things."
Thomas's lips softened into a smile.
"If there is anything you, Emily, or Amanda need; all you have to do is let me know."
She nodded, fighting back tears. It had been so hard to find their way back to being their old selves. She knew it would never be how it was with her father gone, but these glimpses of her mother and sister returning to their usual optimistic, laughing selves made her continue to hope that they would all find a new happiness.
Thomas squeezed her hand and left.
**************
After a quick shower of her own, Nicky put on her favorite pajama pants, an old t-shirt of Jackson's she couldn't quite make herself get rid of, and settled in for a quiet night alone.
After flipping channels and finding nothing to catch her interest, she began to scroll through possible delivery options for dinner.
No sooner than she'd finally settled on Asian cuisine, her phone lit up with Jackson's picture.
With eyes wide she answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Hey Nicky." His deep voice replied.
Her nerves felt like they were on edge. She hadn't heard from him in months.
"Hey Jax." She couldn't help but smile. "How are you?"
"Not bad." He responded, sounding a little more comfortable. "You?"
"Can't complain."
She felt giddy hearing his chuckle.
"You rarely do." He cleared his throat. "I um, I'm in Los Angeles. I flew in with the girls."
"Em told me that." Nicky laughed. "Of all the places you could travel to, why would you pick a bustling city?"
He snorted softly. "You know me. I can't resist a crowd."
She giggled, feeling like her old self once more. It felt so good to be able to talk to him without arguing or crying.
"Anyway, enough about my annoyance with too many people around." Jackson coughed. "You have any plans for dinner?"
"No. I was thinking of ordering out. Mom went to some kind of award's dinner with Uncle Thomas. So, without her and Emily insisting we order Mexican, I was thinking of ordering from this Japanese restaurant I've fallen in love with."
"That actually doesn't sound bad." He paused. "You want to meet me there? For dinner?"
Nicky bit down on her bottom lip to keep from smiling even more. This brought back so many memories from when they were crushing on each other as teenagers and hadn't quite defined that they were a couple. Jackson would usually ask what she wanted for dinner, then remarked it sounded good, and finally found a way to make it just the two of them together sharing it.
"I'd like that." She checked the time. "Give me about twenty minutes to get ready--"
"Only twenty?" He chuckled again. "Okay, where's the real Nicky Beaumont and what have you done to her?"
She burst out laughing. "Hey now. I'll have you know I can get ready faster than I normally do."
"Uh huh." He teased. "I've heard that theory but have yet to see it come about "
She shook her head, laughing even more. "Fine. You caught me. I've already had a shower."
"There we go. Good to know you haven't been swapped out for some lesser clone or something."
"Ha ha." Nicky quipped back. "You never complained once you saw the finished product."
"True." His voice deepened. "You always made the wait worth it."
Her heart skipped a beat.
He cleared his throat. "Send me the directions to the restaurant and I'll see you soon."
After saying goodbye, she allowed herself one giddy squeal. Bounding up the stairs, she couldn't help but be excited over seeing if she and Jackson could possibly find their way back to each other.
She then felt a slight pang of guilt. For the last month she'd been kinda seeing a young, up and coming actor.
Scott Caulfield.
He was handsome, charming, everything a young woman would desire. He looked nothing like Jackson. He was blonde instead of that rich brown hair with red highlights. He had light green eyes instead of the velvety chocolate of her former love. And he thoroughly enjoyed the city night life.
Nothing at all like her sneak away from a crowd loving ex.
She and Scott had not made anything official between them. So she argued to herself that she could go out for a friendly dinner with an old friend.
Even if that old friend still gave her butterflies with a single look.
Determined not to think too much about it, Nicky hurried to look her absolute best without appearing to have tried too hard.
**************
Jackson checked the time again as he waited outside the restaurant. He couldn't help but feel nervous. He'd always felt a little less confident whenever it concerned Nicky.
He couldn't remember a time in his life when he didn't love her. His frown eased some as he recalled her teasing him when they were a couple that he was hers the moment they were two years old and he'd taken her hand to pull her over to play with him instead of Emerick and Alec.
He'd loved her throughout all their awkward phases. They'd been each other's first kiss. They'd been each other's first lover. She'd been the only woman he'd ever admitted he loved.
These last few months of not having her near had been hard. He'd tried to move on once she left, dating a few woman. He'd steered clear of all brunettes knowing they would only pale in comparison to Nicky. He'd also tried to find some that didn't laugh as much nor were into dancing the night away.
She was the only one who made dancing at balls and such pleasurable. There were many nights where he'd willingly stayed out on the dance floor, or simply sat and watched her, completely content in doing so.
Her optimism and sweetness should have clashed with his inherited snark and more jaded view of the world. But with her, he always felt the hope she seemed to have that everything would always work out well in the end.
He missed that. He missed her. She'd always felt like his other half.
Their breakup was quite possibly the worst moment of his life. He never thought of his life without her by his side. He knew he could survive it, and clearly he was.
But...
"Jax!"
He turned at the sound of her voice.
They both broke into smiles as they met each other half way.
Uncertainty hung between them as they wondered how they should greet one another.
Nicky made the first move, throwing her arms around him for a hug.
He hugged her back, making her laugh when he lifted her off the ground.
She looked up at his handsome face and felt that old familiar comfort his presence alone gave her.
"You're late, Lady Beaumont." He teased.
She playfully smacked his arm. "So it took me thirty--
"Forty-five." He corrected with a smirk.
She giggled and slipped her arm through his. "I think you survived the wait, m'lord."
"I'm weak with hunger." He sagged against her, grinning when she squealed at having to support him. "You know I can't go that long without eating something."
"Get in there." She pushed him towards the door.
He opened it for her, bowing his head towards her. "After you, m'lady."
She cocked her head in what he knew would one day be her proud duchess way, and briefly nodded her thanks. She ruined the effect with an adorable, dimpled grin which made him smile all the more.
He was thankful to see she was still the same old Nichole Beaumont he'd known his entire life.
***************
"So what did Emerick do?" Nicky asked, reaching for another pot sticker.
"He somehow charmed the doorman into giving him his pants so that he could make his escape." Jackson replied.
Nicky choked on her laughter, tears coming to her eyes at the thought of one of her best friends running from a lady in one of Cordonia's most exclusive hotels.
"He left that part of the story out when he called me." She said between giggles.
"Alec was out of town, so it was left up to me to rescue him." Jackson shook his head. "I made him wait longer than he should have." He winked at her. "Just to scare him."
She laughed even more.
Their conversations about their loved ones got them through the rest of dinner and on into dessert. They were both lingering as long as they could over their drinks, simply enjoying being near one another again.
"So?" He leaned forward. "You going to Collette's wedding?"
She nodded. "Em got roped into being a bridesmaid. We have to go and support her and Izzy and Jules."
"Alec was forced to say yes to be a groomsmen yesterday."
"No!" Nicky exclaimed. "My poor Alec."
"He's too nice." Jackson added.
"He's Aunt Hana." Nicky reminded him. "Like mother, like son. They both can't say no."
"Luckily, Izzy has a bit more backbone like Uncle Rashad." He said. "But, seeing Jules and Em stuck, she couldn't abandon them."
"You lucked out." She pointed out.
"Yes, I did." He smirked. "But then again, I would have said, no way in hell."
"Jax!" She giggled.
He smiled taking a sip of his drink.
"You know, I think I know why you weren't asked to be a part of the wedding party."
"And why's that?"
Nicky rolled her eyes as she felt that old familiar jealousy that he'd managed to infuse her with.
"Because Collette was always hitting on you."
He laughed. "No, she wasn't."
"Yes, she was!" Nicky pointed at him. "Jax, don't you remember all the times she demanded you share some of your dances with the other ladies of the court?"
He shrugged. "I didn't pay any attention."
"And she tried to break us up so many times!" Nicky was getting angrier by the second. "She--"
Her words died the moment Jackson took her hand in his. Their fingers laced together without any thought.
"There's nothing she could have said that would have made me doubt you." He told her. "I never paid attention to her rumors that you preferred Emerick and was only dating me until he was ready to choose his princess."
Nicky's thumb rubbed soothing circles over his skin.
"I know." She huffed. "She's still a jerk."
"Now that, I can agree to." He waved their waiter over for another refill.
Their hands remained clasped as they looked out the window at the city's lights.
"How about you and I join forces at the wedding?" He turned towards her. "If you don't plan on bringing a date."
"Join forces in what way?"
"Well, we both can't stand her." He explained. "It would drive her crazy if we stuck together and had a good time." He squeezed her hand. "A little revenge on her special day."
Nicky laughed again. "Your Nevrakis genes are showing again."
He chuckled. "I'm pretty tame compared to Mom and Jules when it comes to revenge plots."
She lowered her eyes. "So what you're saying is, we be each other's dates for the wedding?"
He kept his eyes on their hands. "Well, yeah. I mean, if you don't have anyone else you want to bring."
She looked up at him. "You don't have someone you want as your plus one?"
His eyes raised to hers. A tense silence hung between them.
"No." He simply replied.
Nicky felt her heart race.
"I don't either."
His shoulders relaxed as if he'd prepared for a gut punch.
"Then we'll go together." He mumbled. His cheeks flushed. "For revenge purposes of course."
She squeezed his hand knowing what he really meant and how it made her heart soar. "Of course."

Ribs | Nicky Nichols x Reader
hey besties <33 send in requests bc im pretty bored. what do u think im doing?? my trig work?? my ap literature work?? LOL i have so much spare time so leave loads of requests
i know i've taken a hiatus don't hate me but im writing more now i swear.
ANYWAY stream evermore as always <33
request: hey babe! can you do me a favor? i was wondering if you could write a nicky nichols x fem!reader where the reader's new to that prison like they got transfered over and nicky falls like head over heels for this girl who falls in as kind of like a hit woman for red and at first won't pay her any mind but nicky practically sticks herself to the reader until she gives in and gives nicky a chance. thanks a bunch 💜
Tumblr media
"What do you mean Red's got a spy?" laughed Nicky in disbelief and amusement, as she smacked Flaca in her shoulder heavily. "This place is like three square feet; who's that cook spyin' on?"
Alex rolled her eyes, adjusting her thin framed glasses with a smirk coating over her lips, "first of all," she said, sending a glare over to Nicky, "it's a hitwoman. And secondly... this prison is too big. There's people in here with secrets."
Holding back a laugh, Nicky directed a smile at the raven, "no shit, Vause. All of us have secrets. But- eh, this place has too much people in it. It's like a cramped van of puppies."
Maritza, biting into some snack she got at commissary, raised an eyebrow, "what kinda dogs are you adopting in vans?" which merely raised a chuckle from Flaca next to her.
"Dope ones, the ones that can find me coke," Nicky hastily answered, her own smirk crawling upon her face. It was then the sound of a fluorescent buzzing, a near damaging screech in the distance could be heard, and then, in the Cell Block, came erupting a (Y/H/C) woman, her eyes drilled in front of her as she swarmed past Nicky's cell.
"Looks like Red's hitwoman," Piper said with a smile.
Nicky scoffed, "her?" She pointed in your direction, her eyes tracing over your body with precision. "What's she gonna do, y'know... flick them on the head?"
With that, the group could hear the woman whistle, and then coo with a smile, "Oh, Chapman."
It took a few weeks before Nicky actually spoke to you. She wouldn't say it was out of fear, because of course it wasn't -- she wasn't even slightly intimidated by you, someone who radiated her same power and held her same courage.
You were so fascinating to her... but you held absolutely no attention. You couldn't care less about her presence. To you, all she was was a person in the dark, someone who was trying to get your attention at each curve. A type of stalker, but a pretty bad, pretty attentive stalker.
It was currently a Friday, you guessed, although all the days seemed to merge together into an endless Monday about two years ago, when your sentence started.
You sat down next to Freida, giving the thinnest smile as she spoke to you.
"Chapman healing up?" she asked, though you could tell by her voice she didn't truly care about anyone besides herself, which was one of the best things about Freida.
You raised one eyebrow, "she's managing."
When you caught glimpse of the blonde coming in sight from your left you had to withhold a scoff. "Here we go again." You swallowed a deep sigh.
Nicky ran up by your side, rubbing a hand against your back as she sat down. You sucked on the inside of your cheek, glaring at her from the side.
"Heyy, (Y/L/N), what's up, darling?" She smirked, only stopping when you sent a grimace in her direction. "Alright, a little hard-to-get right now... and... for the last two weeks. But, hey, y'know, hard-to-get is the new sexy, eh?" she asked.
You resorted to not answering, which only kept her continuing. "Very talkative, this one," she joked. "Eh, I'm not asking you to tell me your life story, y'know? Just give me something."
You push some of your hair back, and then smirk. "Would you leave me alone?"
"So she speaks!" calls Nicky with a boisterous, surprised expression. You cough, holding back the urge to snip back at her.
You cross your arms in front of your chest, though you can feel the thinnest smile falling over your face that you try your hardest to conceal, covering it with a disinterested sigh.
"And, eh, don't even try to go all Red's-Hitwoman on me," she called, "her and I are two peas in a pod. We've been through everything."
You give her a glare.
"Well, perhaps, not everything, but eh, we've been through a good lot." When you don't reply to her, she takes a deep breath. "Y'know, there's something, romantic about this, right? Like, we're here, together, one of us is pining, the other pretends she doesn't exist, eh?"
You give her another glare.
She rolls her eyes, "we could... uh, we could do that sappy shit. Laughing till our ribs get tough," she said. "We could... share beds like little kids," she said, coming closer to you.
"Gross," Freida complained.
Nicky withheld a scowl, replying by turning to you. "What do you think, Doll? Wanna finally give me the time of day?"
You raise your eyebrows once more, trying to find the right words to say. You smile before standing up with your tray, raising your eyebrows in perfect lining.
"Sure," you say simply, tilting your head to the side.

Back To Vegas - Chapter 4
Tumblr media
Words: 1948
Pairing: Nick Stokes x reader
A/N: Case is unfolding now!! I promise there’ll be more Nick and Reader moments in the next chapter
CH1     CH2      CH3     CH4    CH5   CH6   CH7   CH8
______________________
“Y/N?” You looked up from the evidence gathered at Hallie’s house that was out on the table.
“Greg?”
“New DB just came in. Want to join me?” he questioned stepping into the room.
You looked at Grissom opposite you and he gestured towards Greg “Go. I’ll be ok with this. Catherine will be back in a second anyway.”
You stood and began to leave, Greg leading the way. “You wanna drive?”
“Uhh I think you should. I still don’t know Vegas that well.”
The man laughed “You’ll get to know it soon enough. I’m surprised Nick hasn’t taken you on a tour yet.”
You got into the car with the man “Well we haven’t exactly had the time yet.”
“I was going to ask Nick if he wanted to come hiking soon and you’re more than welcome to join to.” The man started the engine.
“I’ll ask him later. Thank you”
“My pleasure. So Y/N tell me what sort of stuff are you into?”
The entire car ride was spent talking about your hobbies and getting to know the man, allowing him to talk about the history of Vegas and his friendship with Nick.
“I’m sorry I didn’t make too much of an effort to get to know you. Or come and see you and Nick. I was actually kind of nervous. I knew you were a big part of his life and I didn’t want to scare you away or something.”
“Don’t apologise or worry about it. It would have been nice to get to know you sooner, don't get me wrong. But you and Nick were always calling each other so I feel like I know you anyway.”
“Same to you. He spoke about you a lot, you know. Still does.”
You rolled your eyes “As much as I love the man can we move away from the relationship talk? I feel like I’ve been grilled and questioned by everyone about it.”
“Alright. No relationship talk.” The man pulled into the drive of a house. The police presence around the house was instantly noticeable.
“High profile?”
The man shrugged “I don’t think so.”
The two of you got out of the vehicle and grabbed your kits, quickly moving towards the house.
“Why so many officers?” you questioned an older looking man by the front door.
“The body is fresh. Found by his kid. He was a professor and writer. The kid said he saw a woman leaving.”
You thanked the man and entered the house, Greg right behind you. The two of you saw a teenager in the corridor with a detective “Hi.” you greeted them.
“Sanders and?” the detective enquired.
“Y/L/N” you replied and stretched out your hand.
He shook it “Wentz” The man turned to the teenager “This is Steff Nichols, Mr Nichols, the vic’s, son.” He turned to the man “Tell them what you saw.”
Steff fidgeted “I came home from tutoring early and shouted for my Dad. I knew he was in, he never leaves on a Thursday night. He has to be home to watch his favourite show. I didn’t hear a response so I looked for him and came to his room and found him on his bed grasping at his chest. I went to run for my bag and cell phone and saw that someone was running down our drive I didn’t chase her I called nine one one and went to try help him.” he was visibly upset.
“Don’t feel bad you did the right thing.” you re-assured “Have you given Detective Wentz a description of what she looked like?”
He nodded “The best I could.”
“Did you touch anything in the room?” Greg asked from beside you.
“No. My focus was on Dad and… he was gone by the time help got here.”
“Did they touch anything?” Greg asked.
“Nothing. Just the father” Wentz replied.
The two of you nodded. “Stay with the detective alright?” Greg told the kid as the two of you continued down the corridor to the room his father lay.
The room was large and the man lay on the floor next to his bed, far from the door. You took a picture as soon as you entered the room. You slowly approached the body and took more as Greg fell into step with you.
Something caught Gregs eye as he approached the opposite nightstand. “Y/N look” he pointed at a vial on the nightstand as he began to rush out of the room “I’ll ask if they left anything.”
You took a picture of the vial before placing your kit down and picking up the vial. Greg was back with you within seconds “They didn’t even take anything out of their packs. Anything they did was over by the body.”
You read the label and passed it to Greg who now had an open evidence bag. “Potassium.” He sealed the bag and read it through the plastic.
“These cases are more intertwined than we thought.”
“Is it ok if I call Nick? He said that his vic looked like they OD’d but maybe it was something connected to this? Can you call David to check for puncture marks on Hallie?”
He nodded “You call Nick.” Greg brought his phone out of his pocket and walked to the otherside of the room to make his call. Slipping out your phone you quickly called Nick.
“Everything ok?” Nick’s voice was curious
“Yeah.” you pushed some stray hairs back “I’m with Greg with the new DB. We found a vial of potassium here. I know you said your case looked like a general overdose in a motel but be sure to check for Potassium in her bloodstream. We’ll explain more later.”
“Sure, sure. Ours vic had a pretty big concoction of drugs in her stream. We initially thought she was a long time user but she wasn’t at all. I’ll check again for potassium.”
“Thanks Nicky. I’m just finishing this scene and we’ll be back to properly fill you in”
“No problem Darlin’. I’ll see you in a bit.”
“See you in a bit. Love you.”
“I love you too.”
With that you hung up the call and turned back around, Greg stood on the other side of the room with a smirk on his face and arms crossed around his chest. “Love you Nicky.” he teased.
You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face “What? Are you jealous Greggo?”
“Don’t you dare.” he laughed “Let’s get back to the scene shall we?”
You composed yourself “Sure.”
The two of you collected the evidence efficiently and effectively and were soon walking back to the car. Bringing out your phone you checked your messages “Nick says there was potassium in his vic.”
“Right. David said he found puncture marks in Hallie too. This calls for a proper meeting.” Greg slid into the driver’s seat and brought out his phone. He began to frantically tap the screen before locking it and putting it away.
Just as he put it down your phone vibrated and you pulled it out.
“It’s only me.”
You read the text on the screen calling for a team meeting upon your return.
“I’ll drop the evidence off ready to be properly processed then make my way over to the meeting.” you pulled your seatbelt across as he pulled away from the scene.
“Did Nick tell you about that time he left evidence in his car and-”
“Yeah.” you laughed “He gets pretty embarrassed about it.”
“I would too. It was a rough day.”
“When he told me the story I instantly got second hand embarrassment and it lives in my head rent free now. I’ll never leave evidence in a car.”
The journey was quick and you both leaped out the car. Greg chucked you his keys before rushing inside. You grabbed all of the evidence from the trunk and locked up before following Gregs footsteps inside.
You quickly dropped off the evidence and hurried to the breakout room. Greg was straight ahead of you at the back centre of the room as you entered. Slipping inside you stood by the door next to Sara.
“I’ve called you here because it looks like all of our cases are linked. Each of them are all linked with a potassium overdose or elevated levels in their stream. Y/N and I just got back from a scene where an older man, a professor and writer was found having a heart attack by his son and he saw a woman fleeing the scene but stayed to help his dad.”
Greg paused and looked around the room before continuing. “We need to find the link between these cases. We’ll all be working together from now on. I want the teams to review all evidence from now on. Finish whatever you were doing and come join Y/N and I with your evidence.”
The group split up and you were soon falling into step with Greg. You spread the evidence out across the table and began to upload the crime scene photos before joining Greg back at the table.
Nick was the first to join you. He placed a box of evidence down on the table and stood beside you. Sara and Grissom were quick on his heels with more boxes. Nick’s hand settled on the small of your back as he leaned forward and used his free hand to sift through some evidence.
Sara got to work looking through all of the crime scene photos and Catherine was soon coming into the room with armfull’s of paperwork.
The team worked effortlessly together. Looking through evidence and moving around the room smoothly, lending knowledge effectively and researching as appropriate.
You pulled out the picture strip found on Hallie and looked over the faces with her in the booth. “This face is familiar.” you showed Greg next to you.
He took the strip from your hands “That’s Shana. The first vic. The teacher.” He held up the strip to the room “We’ve found out first link. Find out how they know each other.”
Catherine took the strip from Greg “On it.”
People began to leave the room, finding new clues and going to research them Greg had to excuse himself to take a call but he was soon returning.
“Sara, Y/N.”
“Yep.”
“New Dead body for you both. Could be connected.”
The two of you were soon leaving. “I never thought something like this would be my first case in Vegas.” you admitted to Sara.
“Vegas is different.” Sara laughed “It’s thrown us all straight into the deep end.”
“You can say that again.”
The scene was a small nicely furnished home. It wasn’t high end but not low end either. The surrounding houses were full of families. The victim was Tessa Spencer, a woman in her 30s found dead in her living room by her brother. Sara and you processed the scene swiftly.
“Do you have any idea who could have done this? Did she have any enemies?” Sara questioned Tessa’s brother, Julian.
“A lot of people liked her. She was a really good person.”
“I know but you really need to think for us. Is there anyone who would want to see her hurt?”
He sighed. “I know she had a disagreement with our cousin last week. She mentioned it over the phone. The two have never really got on. She’s definitely spiralled over the years.”
“Would you say your cousin is capable of murder?”
“Yeah. Most definitely. They were on trial a couple of years ago”
“Who?”
“Hannah West”
Sara’s head snapped to Julian “I beg your pardon.”

Character/Movie List
Below is movies and TV shows I like personally and are lsited as a reference. If you don't see something you're interested in, it is not that I don't like it, it is because I most likely forgot it because I love so many movies/shows tbh. Just ask, and I'll answer! And, from the Rules and Regulations page, what I had meant by "mostly" is that I can dabble outside of the acting world and into actors/actresses themselves and/or singers, popstars, etc.
{Another side-note, I am not so much into shows, but mostly movies! Although, there are some exceptions that I love beyond belief!}

2. Nick being teased by his whole family that tickling isn't something yo be embarrassed about
(Bonus, Andrew or Jessie tickle him, teasing him about what his family says but he gets them back)
A Ticklish Dinner Conversation
It was a Saturday night, and Nick was having his friends Andrew and Jessi over for dinner. Of course, Andrew and Nick spent most of the time dribbling a basketball around Nick's room, whilst Jessi spent most of the time on Nick's bed scrolling through her phone. If anything, Jessi was the big sister of the friend group.
"Dinner time!", Nick's dad announced, the three kids scrambling to get the seat furthest away from Mr. Birch. Nick got their first, sitting on the opposite side of Leah at the end of the table. Andrew sat between Nick and Leah. Jessi sat on the other side of the table, which was, coincidentally, next to Judd.
"So", Nick's dad said, "How is your father Andrew?"
"Grumpy", Andrew responded, "He says there are no good tuna places around here".
"Did you tell him to just get sushi and peel of the rice?", Nick suggested.
"The only thing I will peel off", Judd said, "Is your skin".
Jessi's eyes drooped at him.
"Wow, Judd, getting a little violent tonight I see".
"I'm always violent".
Nick's dad shook his head, "I know. Your the violent one. You are so violent whilst Leah and Nicky are both so calm".
"Except for when Nick is tickled", Nick's mother said, "He can get pretty violent when he's tickled".
Nick blushed deeply and tried to avoid eye contact with his friends; who he could tell were smirking without him even looking.
"Mooooom, now is not the time", Nick said a little urgently.
Nick's mother laughed: "Oh please! It's just tickling".
"Yeah", his dad added, "Nothing to be embarrassed about there. I, for one, am rather ticklish myself. I have a really bad spot on my-"
"Okay, I'm leaving", Nick said, trying to sound assertive but just sounding quiet.
"Oh Nick, please don't tell me tickling is a sensitive subject for you", Leah said, before smirking at her own joke.
"No", Nick said, turning around, "It's not a sensitive subject. It's just that, uh, I'm not ticklish".
"Wo-hoa!", Jessi remarked, standing up, "Now that's one of the biggest, fattest, stinkiest lies I've ever heard".
"Yeah", Andrew said, "I agree with Jessi. Mostly".
"Wait, how do YOU guys know that?", Leah asked, intrigued to hear some silly story about her brother and his friends.
"No!", Nick urged, "Don't answer that".
"Oh, we'll tell the whooole story", Andrew said, enjoying how pissed it made Nick.
"Yeah", Jessi said, "We'll tell all of you how each of us found out about how ticklish Nick is, not sparing a single detail!"
Nick was getting so red, and even a little giggly, that he didn't have the energy to oppose.
“Me first!”, Andrew said enthusiastically, before reciting the tale...
It was Spring break, and Andrew and Nick were having a sleepover. Nick and Andrew had this recurring thing that whenever they had a sleepover, one of them jumped out of the closet and scared the other. On that day, it was Andrew’s turn to be scared, Nick jumping out and yelling ‘boo’ at him so abruptly that it almost made Andrew drop his towel. Nick burst into laughter.
“Oh, you think that's fucking funny?”
“You should have seen the look on your face!”, Nick remarked, still cracking up.
Andrew rolled his eyes and sighed, “I’m gonna go get changed”.
After Andrew has slipped his PJ’s on, he started plotting a way to get his best friend back. Sure, he scared Nick the last time, but it was just a little boo, not a full on clown attack.
“That was very childish of you Nicholous”, Andrew said, walking up to his best buddy who was slipping his head through his pyjama shirt.
“Your the childish one! You screamed like a girl!”
“Hey, that’s sexist. And of the two of us, you are definitely the child”.
“Oh really”, Nick responded, “Is that a challenge? Because I know that you still sleep with a very special pillow”.
Andrew huffed, “Well your really short! I bet you could get mistaken for a little kid any time”.
“Could not!”
“Could too!”
“Could not!”
“Stop arguing baby Nicky, or the tickle monster might come!”, Andrew mocked, wiggling his fingers in Nick’s direction. Surprisingly however, Nick actually squeaked and jumped. Andrew stared at him for a second, and Nick blushed deeply.
“Nick, are you?”
“No, no I’m not, your a baby, I’m a big boy, end of discussion-ah!”
Andrew had poked Nick’s belly gently, making him jump and recoil.
“Haha! You are ticklish!”, Andrew remarked with glee, “Come here little Nicky...”
Nick screamed and ran, out of his door and down the stairs.
Nick’s parents thought nothing of it as their boy ran across the front porch, followed closely by a chuckling Andrew. Andrew caught Nick in the front garden, picked him up and pushed him to the ground, reaching down to tickle his sides.
“No! Haha! Andrehehew!”
“No! Andrew!”, Andrew mocked, “Take it Nicholous!”.
“Oh God!”, he remarked, squirming around as Andrew found his ticklish ribs. “Oh gohohod that tickles! Ahaha!”
Andrew grinned deviously, “A little sensitive there Nicky?”
Nick tried to turn over to block Andrew’s hand. It worked; he squashed Andrew’s hand between his side and the grassy ground.
“Ow!”, he said, lifting his hand up, “Nick, why did you do that?”
Nick smiled, “You deserved it man, you were tickling me”.
“Oh come on, you would have done that too!”, Andrew said, “If you found out I was ticklish you would have tickled me, and I wouldn’t have squashed your hand like that!”
Nick raised his eyebrows, “Are you ticklish Andrew?”
“And that’s how it happened”, Andrew said, “I responded no, of course”.
Nick was blushing deep, but slightly managed to peep put, “That’s-that’s not what happened”.
Andrew chuckled, “Whatever”.
“Interesting story Andrew”, Nick’s mom said, “Very very cute”.
Andrew looked to Nick, who looked practically crimson at this point.
“Ok, my turn”, Jessi said.
Nick and Jessi were sitting alone under one of the school trees, as Andrew was sick that day. Jessi was talking about how things like Barbie enforced negative gender stereotypes, and every few seconds, Nick agreed with a nod.
“Anyways”, Jessi concluded, “What toys did you play with as a child?”
Nick thought for a moment, “Well, I had a teddy bear and that was about it”/
“Really?”, Jessi said, “That's surprising, I thought your parents spoiled you”/
“Ohh, you asked what toys I played with, not what toys I owned”.
Jessi laughed, “What, you had a whole bunch of toys lying around that you did’nt play with”.
“Pretty much”.
Jessi leanded over and poked Nick softly in the ribs.
“Hehe, careful, I’m ticklish”, Nick said, shifting away slightly.
Jessi raised her eyebrows, “Oh really?”
“Wait, no don’t”, Nick said urgently, shuffling away.
Jessi chuckled and reached over to tickle Nick’s torso. He fell backwards and collapsed in laughter.
“No, nohoh! Jehessi!”
Jessi smirked, “Hmmm, this is a sight isn’t it? I wonder where your worst ticklish spots are-”
“Haha! Tickles! Ahahaha!”
Nick was jerking around, back and fourth. Jessi tried to give the sides of his torso, right under his armpits, a little squeeze.
“Nahaha! Ahahaha!”
Jessi smiled, “Oh, that one does look pretty sensitive, but there’s got to be a spot that really makes you collapse. Everyone has one”.
Jessi looked down at his knees, “Perhaps here?”
She squeezed and tickled at his knees, making him burst into screamy laughter.
“NOHOHHO! NOHOHOT THEHEHERE!”
Nick had tears forming in his eyes.
“Oh. I guess that's the spot”, Jessi concluded, lifting her hands.
Nick sat up, recovering. “You-you said that everyone had a spot right?”
Jessi tilted her head, “Huh?”
“A really bad tickle spot that makes them collapse. If everyone has one, what’s yours”.
“And that's the end of the story. I of course responded that I didn’t have one”. Jessi concluded.
“Tha-hats not what happened”, Nick chuckled nervously.
“Wow”, Leah said, “It seemed like in that story Nick actually wanted to be tickled”.
“WHAT?!”
“I mean, he told Jessi that he was ticklish, and he didn’t try to squish her hand like he did Andrew’s. Heck, I don’t even recall him asking you to stop Jessi”.
“Scroll up to check if that’s true”, Andrew quickly added, “Oh and don’t forget to reblog!”
Nick was still blushy and giggly.
“So, Nicky, do you like being tickled like your father does?”, Nick’s mom said, giving her husband’s knee a gentle squeeze.
“No-hohoho”, he giggled.
“Oh come on, you totally do!”, Leah remarked, running around the table and lifting up her brother, making him scream.
“Put me down Leah!”
“As you wish”, Leah dropped Nick onto the couch and tickled him immediately. Nick squirmed and tossed and turned, not able to escape. It got even worse when Jessi and Andrew joined in, tickling his knees and tummy.
Nick’s parents let that happen, sitting and clinking their glasses together. It was nice to see Nick and his sister and friends laughing and having a good time.
Surprisingly, that was not the most embarrassing Birch family dinner to ever take place when friends were around.

-
Someone from the kitchen nodded Nicky over, affectively ending your one-sided conversation, wanting her attention for something. She sighed, before looking apologetically at you. Your eyes looked lost in the beyond as it were.
“Sorry, kid,” she said. “Mommy’s calling. I’ll see you around, Baby Blues.”
With that, she stood up, grabbed her tray and left you behind. You didn’t want to sit there all by your lonesome, so instead you took the opportunity when the officer wasn’t passing, to go bus your tray. You threw away the rest of the food, which was in truth most of the food, seeing your stomach couldn’t take any of it due to the lump already occupying the space, and placed the tray and mug in the case for washing. When you went to turn, officer Barnes had once again taken a steady stand between you and the door. You had to pass him to get out. God, you hoped you could do so without getting a comment or otherwise. But, of course not.
“Venting a little to the junkie, are we?”
He sounded almost more mocking than annoyed. Almost.
“What? You think Nichols gives a shit about you?” he scoffed, crossing his arms and looked out across the cafeteria. “Please. That family only look out for themselves. When push comes to shove, she won’t be anywhere to be seen. And we plan to do a lot of pushing, Harper. So, unless you want dear little Nicky to get pushed along with you, you’d do best to keep your mouth shut. ‘Cause there’s a lot of pot holes lurking here and there for a druggie, you know. And I’d personally hate for her to fall in one. You got me?”
Tears stung your eyes as they weighed you down. Your entire jaw was trembling, your teeth audibly rattling from it. The threats were no longer just about you, you could no longer only look out for your best interests, but others. People you now had come to care about. You would be totally responsible for anything that happened to her. He was giving it to you straight. Mouth off or tell anybody, someone else will pay the price with you. It was like being put in a straightjacket. Whatever small hope you had of talking to these guards seeped away. They wouldn’t listen to you. They weren’t out to hear the truth. They just wanted you to suffer. Alone.
Your mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water as you tried to find your voice again. Your throat was clogged with pleas and cries for him to ‘please, don’t do this’, ‘please, don’t hurt her’. But what came out was a solemn;
“Yes, sir. I understand.”

my top 10 wlw ships
10: nicky nichols and lorna morello - orange is the new black
Tumblr media
these guys make me so sad, especially nicky. the idea of being in love with your best friend but not getting that reciprocated is something a lot of queer people can relate to, and that’s on full display with these two
9: robin buckley and nancy wheeler - stranger things
Tumblr media
i know they’ve interacted like once in the whole show, but the idea of what their dynamic could be is so promising. i’m invested a relationship that has little chance of ever being developed and i’m okay with that
8: willow rosenberg and tara maclay - buffy the vampire slayer
Tumblr media
i love these two for a lot of reasons. first of all, they’re like historical in terms of representation. other than that, they are super sweet and typically had each other’s best interests in mind. they’re relatively low on this list though because willow has a tendency to be a little manipulative and it created something really unhealthy in their relationship, and tara deserves better
7: santana lopez and brittany pierce - glee
Tumblr media
one of my favorite glee memories is when i got back into it junior year when i was really sick and out of school for a whole week, and these two made me cry multiple times while my brain wasn’t functioning properly. they were the first gay ship i really cared about. they’re genuinely really good together, even if things did get out to a rocky start
6: korra and asami sato - the legend of korra
Tumblr media
these two are adorable and i like how their relationship really feels natural. it makes sense for them to be together because that’s just how they’ve grown, and i love that
5: sydney novak and dina - i am not okay with this
Tumblr media
these two are so adorable. i think that not only are they really relatable, but they genuinely feel like real teenagers that have feelings for each other that they’re trying to figure out
4: casey gardner and izzie - atypical
Tumblr media
these two are really sweet. do i hate how dramatic they can be at times? oh for sure. but they always recognize when they do something wrong, and i think that’s super important
3: waverly earp and nicole haught - wynnona earp
Tumblr media
these two. i swear to god. they are adorable, and they’re probably one of healthiest couples i’ve seen on tv in a while. i’m so excited for when season four comes back next year
2: faith lehane and buffy summers - buffy the vampire slayer
Tumblr media
when eagerly and nicole are there to make me happy, buffy and faith are there to break my heart. i could write whole essays about how faith loved buffy, and about how there was probably a time where buffy loved her back. they make me so sad, but i love them
1: quinn fabray and rachel berry - glee
Tumblr media
this is another ship i could write an essay or two about. i’m not going to go into depth cause it’ll get long, i just really love these two

Help Leads To Something More - Chapter 4 - Red's Approval
Red interrogates Liv, Nicky and Liv make up
Olivia POV
I walked back into Litchfield Penitentiary. We solved the case a couple of days ago and caught the killer, so now I’m coming to update Nicky. This time, the guards left me in one of the hallways while they went to go get Nicky. I was standing looking at my phone, when a red haired woman approached me.
“You Brown?” She asked.
“Um, yes. I’m Agent Brown. Who are you?” I replied.
“I’m Red, and the girl you’re playing just so happens to be my daughter. Leave Nicky alone,” She said.
“Wait, you think I’m playing her?” I asked. She nodded. “The fuck? I’m not toying with her at all. She asked for my number and I gave it to her. She asked me to let her know how the case ends and I’m here letting her know. I haven’t done anything except for what she’s asked. If I was planning on ghosting her or never talking to her again, I would have given her a fake number. However, you would know that that’s my real number if she had actually called me,” I replied, angry. She wouldn’t stop asking for my number, and after I gave it to her, she never used it. This always happens to me. Everytime I actually like someone they don’t like me back.
Red seemed a little shocked at my rant. I guess she expected me to agree with her and tell her I was messing with Nicky.
“Um, I didn’t know that,” She said.
“Yeah,” I replied. Just then, Nicky came down the hallway.
“Really Red?! Again?! I thought I told you to leave them alone! Even if she came!” Nicky said, livid.
“Hey, hey. It’s ok. She didn’t say anything insulting or anything,” I told Nicky, my hands on her rapidly heaving shoulders. The guard told me to take my hands off and for both of us to follow him into the meeting room. Nicky rolled her eyes and walked into the room. She, once again, sat opposite to me, across the silver table. “So,” I said, “Apparently, Red thinks that I’m toying with you.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry about that,” She replied, looking down, ashamed.
“Y’know, if you had actually called me, you’d know that that number’s mine. I’m not trying to pressure you or make you uncomfortable, just want to make sure that you know that I’m not fucking with you or anything,” I told her.
“Ok, thanks. Honestly, I let their opinions get the better of me, and for that I’m sorry,” She replied.
“Don’t apologize. I get that it doesn’t look the best from your standpoint. Anyway, I’m here today to let you know that we caught the killer. Your former dealer, King, only kinda knew the person, but he was still able to help us and the murderer is off the streets,” I said.
“Well, that’s good, isn’t it, Agent Hottie,” She said, relaxing more. I could tell that all of this was stressing her out and that she wasn’t herself, but the more we talked, the more comfortable she became. We talked for about an hour before I had to go and fly back to Quantico.
“Well, Nicky Nichols, it’s been a ride,” I said smirking and standing up from my chair.
“It surely has,” She said, mirroring my smirk. There wasn’t a guard in the room, so Nicky pulled me into a short kiss. “That is to tide me over for the 2 years until I get out,” She said.
I blushed, not really knowing what to say. “Well alright then,” I said, “Goodbye for now, Nick. Call me soon.”

Dream Chasers.
Mark Harris and Alicia Malone—two of the hosts of this month’s TCM Film Festival—tell Jack Moulton about Nichols and May, West Side Story, classic lockdown discoveries, and the films that make you feel like everything has changed when you walk out of that cinema.
For a second year in a row due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the TCM Classic Film Festival is being hosted virtually. Its program screens across TCM and HBO Max from May 6 to May 9. The festival, which began in 2010, was held at Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the nearby Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, a move designed to allow classic movie fans to retread the footsteps of glitzy premieres from the glamorous past.
Ahead of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming remake, the festival opens with West Side Story’s 60th anniversary screening, featuring new and exclusive interviews by living legends Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn. The complete festival lineup includes classic programming and talent highlights, from Michael Douglas introducing his Best Picture-winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to Scorsese on Goodfellas, to a comedian-heavy table read of Edward D. Wood Jr.’s infamously bad Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Journalist and author Mark Harris, who published the biography Mike Nichols: A Life earlier this year, is presenting the 1996 American Masters documentary Nichols and May: Take Two, covering the Oscar-winning director’s legendary comic partnership with Elaine May. It features iconic sketches that will recontextualize the way you think about Nichols if you thought his career started with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Graduate.
TCM host, feminist cinema expert, Australian expat and Letterboxd member Alicia Malone is also a presenter at this year’s festival. (She admits she’s slacking on her Letterboxd logging this year, but used it to track her viewings over lockdown, topping over 500 films.) Neither Harris nor Malone have been able to go to the cinema since they closed over a year ago, but both are eager to return to their local arthouses in Maine and the Upper West Side of Manhattan as soon as they’re ready.
We caught up with Harris and Malone shortly before the festival commenced for a classic edition of the Letterboxd Life in Film.
Tumblr media
‘The Poseidon Adventure’ (1972).
What’s your fondest memory of seeing a film in the cinema? Mark Harris: This is embarrassing, but for me it’s The Poseidon Adventure. At the time, my parents were a bit stricter than other parents so the other kids were already getting to see so-called ‘adult’ movies. The Poseidon Adventure was the first ‘not-kids’ movie that I ever got to see in a theater and at the age of eight, I immediately thought ‘well, clearly this is the best movie of all-time’. Everything in it was new information to me, such as how adults talked to each other and Stella Stevens playing a prostitute—I had no idea what that was. I found it so scary, I believed everything I saw on the screen. The joy of taking in something I hadn’t seen before has never left me.
Alicia Malone: It would probably be seeing Amélie. I was living in Canberra but my older sister had moved to Sydney, which to me was the big smoke, I really wanted to live there when I grew up. I got to visit her by myself and stay in her flat which she was renting by herself and it seemed so cool. She took me to the local arthouse cinema where Amélie was playing and I was so swept away. I know that film gets a bad rap now for being overly sentimental and quirky, but I just felt like I was being seen. I had such a kinship with the character of Amélie because she’s a dreamer, always in her own head and that’s how I was. I was always comparing my life to movies and playing movie scenes in my head. I remember walking out of that cinema and it felt like everything had changed—the color was brighter, it was special.
MH: We have to talk Turner into an Amélie-Poseidon Adventure double-feature!
AM: What a double! That would be amazing.
Tumblr media
John Garfield and Ida Lupino in ‘The Sea Wolf’ (1941).
Which classic films that you discovered during lockdown had a major impact on you? MH: I wanted to dive into some directors that I really didn’t know well so I started watching all the Luchino Visconti movies, because Italian cinema is not my strongest area. That was an incredibly rewarding experience. I also saw the big seven-hour Russian War and Peace, which completely blew my mind. Those were probably my big pandemic discoveries.
AM: Something I really loved was getting to do the TCM Star of the Month for John Garfield because he’s such an interesting character and was a pre-cursor to Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and those types of method actors. I’d seen him in various films—such as The Postman Always Rings Twice—but I’d never sat down to watch a lot of his filmography and learn more about his personal story. To see films like The Sea Wolf and Body and Soul, I really gained a newfound respect for him as an actor. You can see some of the beginnings of that kind of tough-guy, everyday-man archetype with a brilliant actor putting his emotions right there on his sleeve.
MH: I should also say that the Women Make Movies Festival was huge for me. All those movies are on my DVR and I’m still going through them and discovering them. I recorded everything and that was and continues to be a gigantic education for me.
AM: Yes! Thanks for that reminder. That was such a fulfilling experience to get to be one of the hosts on that with Jacqueline Stewart. What was so brilliant about Mark Cousins’ documentary is that there are so many clips of films that you think how have we not seen this? How are we not studying this film? How do we not know about this particular filmmaker?

Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson in ‘Heartburn’ (1986).
If you could only pick one, which is the most overlooked film by Mike Nichols? MH: The most under-appreciated film to me is Heartburn. That was a real rediscovery when I was working on the book. I remember liking it, but I didn’t remember how sharp the performances were, how funny the comedy was, and the really acute social observations. I was so surprised when I was coming across the reviews—almost all of which were by men—and all of them said some version of “Why is he wasting his time with this? Why would he tell this woman’s story? Why doesn’t he tell the other half of the story?” Surely no-one would leave this character unless she gave him a good reason to leave! It was really shocking to me how dismissive and contemptuous a lot of the critical reaction was. I’m so happy that I’ve gotten to stick Heartburn under a lot of people’s noses because it’s a movie they seem to be really liking once they find it.
AM: I’m obviously not as deep into his filmography as Mark is, but I have to agree that Heartburn is a film that I can’t believe has been so overlooked. I came to that movie through Nora Ephron, who I just adore. [Heartburn is adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel by Ephron.] I rewatched it recently and I was blown away by it. Of course, Meryl Streep is amazing, but just getting to be in those characters’ worlds again and watching it after I had listened to the audiobook—which features the voice of Meryl Streep—about a year ago added a whole new experience. I loved how in her book how she has all these recipes dotted through it that you see in the movie as well.
MH: That’s one of the great audiobook readings of all time. It’s great to listen to [Streep] do that.
Tumblr media
John Cassavetes and Peter Falk in ‘Mikey and Nicky’ (1976).
Where do you recommend film lovers start with Elaine May? MH: It’s only a four-movie body of work as a director so I think it’s perfectly fine to go in chronological order. A New Leaf is fantastic and feels 100 percent her. You really get a great deal of her sensibility in that movie. I would just start there and go to The Heartbreak Kid and then to Mikey and Nicky, which is not the place to start but is a fascinating movie, and then you’ll be ready for Ishtar.
AM: See, I would say Mikey and Nicky straight out of the gate.
MH: Really?
AM: I love subverting expectations of what a female director can do and that is such a masculine movie. It’s a film that you wouldn’t expect for a female director to make. I love the back and forth, the rapport between [Cassavetes and Falk]. I find it really compelling and exciting every time I see it. So I say, go hard, go in with Mikey and Nicky then, yeah, A New Leaf and The Heartbreak Kid, but maybe skip Ishtar.

Iconic comedy duo Elaine May and Mike Nichols.
Thinking of Nichols fleeing to New York City from Germany, and Alicia moving to Hollywood from Australia, which ‘American Dream’ film resonates with you the most? AM: This answer is going to sound quite cheesy since it was a recent film: La La Land. I understand all the criticism about it, I agree with it, but I don’t care. I feel like it was made for me as a redhead in Hollywood, chasing her dream, and coming up against all the obstacles. I also love Singin’ in the Rain, which I know is not necessarily strictly about the American Dream but is about Hollywood in general. That is a film that really started the idea of moving to Hollywood as a young kid. It’s the idea of a magical place where you could do anything and make your dreams come true and have dignity—always dignity.
MH: This time I’m going to go hard and dark and say the first title that occurred to me, which is The Godfather: Part II. It’s a great immigrant story, though it’s a strange version of the American Dream. The whole saga is about coming to America, becoming an American, and deciding what American values are.
AM: I should say that during our TCM Film Festival on HBO Max, we have a section on immigrant stories. We have America, America, which is a great one by Elia Kazan, and Stranger Than Paradise, which I would recommend as well. It’s a warped view of the American Dream but I love the way they think they get rich and all their dreams can come true. Also Black Legion, which is a darker version of the immigrant story with Humphrey Bogart going to the darker side of ‘foreigners should not take American jobs’.
MH: I’ll just throw in a plug for another Mike Nichols movie, Working Girl. He really saw that as an immigrant story—the first shot is of the Statue of Liberty, even though they’re [emigrating] from Staten Island! I think Mike thought it was as distant of a land as the old country, I’m not sure he spent a lot of time on Staten Island.

Katharine Hepburn in ‘Woman of the Year’ (1942).
What are some of your other problematic faves? The classics we acknowledge have not aged well, but you love anyway. AM: I think My Fair Lady is one of those. I’m a sucker for make-over movies despite all of their problematic ways of showing how women need to change if you don’t fit into the mold and you should sand down all your edges. But I get worked up in the whole transformation myth and making your life better. Even though it’s got Audrey Hepburn and you want to see Julie Andrews in that role, My Fair Lady is still one that I enjoy and I can see all of the problems with it.
Another one, that we featured during our Reframed series on TCM, was Woman of the Year, which is a great example of one of those women’s pictures that, as Professor Jeanine Basinger has pointed out, is so empowering for most of the movie and then in the last five minutes it undoes everything. It’s still a great film to watch when you want to get ahead of feminism and see Katharine Hepburn in a wonderful role, but you just have to ignore the breakfast scene at the end.
MH: I was just talking the other day to some people about the movie Network, which is one of my all-time favorite movies, but if you look hard at Network, it’s very possible to read that as a story about a woman who can’t be a professional in a workplace without hollowing herself out and becoming sort of less-than-human. [Diana Christensen] is talked about terribly by the other characters and you’re supposed to learn a hard lesson about what a monster an ambitious woman can become and that does not hold up well. It’s also a movie that features some of the wittiest dialogue and some of the greatest performances of any movie of the 1970s and I’m always going to love it for that.
AM: That’s such a trope, isn’t it? The ice-cold career woman.
MH: Right, and whoever did it better than…
AM, MH: Faye Dunaway!

Alicia Malone, Mark Harris.
Which coming-of-age movie character did you find the most relatable? AM: For me, it’s Velvet Brown played by Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet. I watched that over and over as a child when I was obsessed with horses. It was so inspiring as a young girl to see another young girl chasing her dreams—pretending she’s a boy that doesn’t speak English to win the Grand National—particularly at the time when I grew up in the 1980s, when so many of those films for kids were about young boys achieving their dreams.
MH: Haven’t seen it in a long time, but the Peter Yates movie Breaking Away meant a lot to me when I was a kid. The idea of chasing something that means something to you but trying to reconcile what your parents thought about it, and how to balance your own dreams with the expectations other people had for you. I think that’s a really lovely movie.
I still think about those performances by Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earl Haley, and of course Barbara Barrie and Paul Dooley as the parents. That movie landed right in my heart the first time I saw it. I’m almost afraid to go back now, I don’t want it to have turned into one of my problematic faves! I want it to be one of my faves.
If we could gift every Letterboxd member two hours of HBO Max to discover one film from this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival lineup, which film would you want it to be? (My pick is Bless Their Little Hearts.) AM: A film that I just adore is Cléo From 5 to 7 by Agnès Varda. She was working in the French New Wave and arguably made the first movie ever in the French New Wave. It’s one of those great movies that is close to real time as possible—it should be Cléo From 5 to 6:30 really, because it’s an hour and a half. It’s so inventively shot and edited. I’ve done the walk that she did in Paris, I’ve tried to map that out and copy Cléo. I want more people to see it and discover it.
MH: My husband [playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner] recently finished writing a new version of West Side Story for Steven Spielberg that’s going to come out at the end of the year. I think I would like to gift everybody the first version of West Side Story, which opens the festival, because you have to start there. It’s a beautiful movie and I think it’s a really instructive thing to see how this story was told in 1961 versus how it’s going to be told in 2021. Also, it’s two-and-a-half hours so if we’re only gifting people two hours… they’re not going to see the ending and they’re going to have to go to the new one to find out what happens!

78 + 87 with nicky nichols?💕
First time writing Nicky! I love her so much. I hope you like this, Anon. I really enjoyed writing it.
78. “I’m just looking out for you.”
87. “Let me help.”
Drabble List #2
You’d never experienced as much terror as when you realised the riot was really happening and you were caught up in the middle of it. Your breathing was too shallow and you could feel the sweat beading on your temple. You wanted to get out of there and go back to normal.
You were running in the opposite direction of the blood streaked floor, wanting to get as far from it as possible. Ideally you’d hole up somewhere safe for the length of the riot and then surrender when it all inevitably went to shit.
“Hey.”
You considered just legging it out of there if the voice hadn’t been familiar and coming from the pharmacy. You stumbled to a stop. Nicky was leaning through the window, towards you. You took a deep breath, already wanting to take off again. You’d been avoiding Nicky for long enough that despite the terror coursing through your veins, you still felt awkward being in her presence.
“Got somewhere to be?” she asked, smirking at you.
“I’m looking for a hiding place,” you snapped, “know any good ones?”
“Eeh, you know, no where is really safe in the current climate,” she said, “I think the safest course of action might be to band together with a rag tag group of underdogs.”
“Helpful as always, Nichols.”
You turned away, getting ready to start running again. The supposed time machine in the laundry might be the best bet, or possibly the library if you could secure the doors. You heard a clank of a door.
“Let me help.”
You sighed, turning on your heels again. Nicky was leaning against the doorframe, her arms crossed over her chest. Your heart constricted, remembering the first time you’d seen her in the same position. You hadn’t known then how much she would hurt you.
“I’m good, thanks,” you said.
“Daya has a gun, the Spanish are going full rambo on the guards, and the meth heads are trying to fuck shit up,” she said, “you’d be safer staying in here until it blows over.”
You didn’t want to admit she was right. You’d be locked in a safe space with people who didn’t hate you. But on the other hand the thought of being in an enclosed space with Nicky Nichols once again made you want to run screaming in the other direction.
“If you’re handing out meds to people you’re going to get extra time. I’m trying to avoid that,” you said.
“I can’t tell you what to do but, you know, it would be nice to have a pretty face to look at in there.” She smirked at you again, “we could get reacquainted in amongst all this madness.”
“Thanks but no thanks.”
“I’m just looking out for you.”
“Nichols, you have never looked out for me. You literally fucked me over when you believed you had a chance to start fucking your married friend again. Excuse me if I don’t want to spend time with you.”
“Is that where this hostility is coming from?” she asked, stepping out of the doorway, “I didn’t realise I had such an effect on you.”
“I don’t have time for this.”
You turned one last time before you felt a hand grab your arm. You were tugged backwards, leaving you to do your best to not stumble over your own feet. You were pushed through the door. It clicked behind you.
“You know, we have plenty of time if you stay here.”
“Nicky, I don’t want to stay here, not with you.”
She pushed you through the previously locked door, and you realised who she’d been spending the time with. You sighed, whirling around to look at Nicky, ready to fight her to get away. For the first time you saw the confidence in her face drop, wariness in every feature.
“I can’t do this,” you said.
“I want to keep you safe.”
You rolled your eyes but she grasped your face with both hands. You dragged your eyes to hers, scared about what she was going to say. You didn’t like her being so vulnerable.
You didn’t expect her to pull you forward and kiss you. You were too stunned to push her away or struggle, falling into the kiss from the woman you’d missed for the last few months. Her fingers dug into the skin of your cheeks, as if trying to anchor you to this place, this moment. You’d never felt this kind of desperation before.
When she drew away you blinked at her, your heart racing. You turned away from her, sinking down on to the floor, your back pressed against the wall. You looked up at her.
“Fine, I’ll stay.”
She slid down the wall beside you, crossing her legs in front of her.
“Good.”
