This year I plan to read 5 Swedish books, as I did for the past 2 years. I wanted to start by reading Karin Boye's Kallocain but since I'm going to Sweden this year, I thought reading Nils Holgersson's underbara resa genom Sverige would be better - to know a bit more about Sweden and maybe get some tips for what to see. Well it was more exhausting to read it than I expected and when I finished it, I just felt like I need to read something more modern. After all, last year I only read books that took place in 1860-1960 and I haven't read a book taking place after 2000 since two years ago.
So Björnstad is what I started reading. I have read only about 25 pages so far but I have to say - I'm EXCITED. It looks like ice hockey will be very important part of the story which is amazing because I love ice hockey and the world championship begins this Friday, so it feels thematical. I also wanted to read it so I could know if I want to buy the other books in the series when I'm in Sweden.
Kallocain has to wait but I promise I'll get to it eventually!

After København I visited Malmö. I liked Malmö more. But it's waaay too hot. I expected it to be a bit colder up here, not 30°C. It's my second day traveling alone and it is more difficult than I thought. It's a bit scary being alone in these very big cities but I still love it. I'm listening to Scandinavian classics while I'm on the train. Today I finished Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige by Selma Lagerlöf and started Emil i Lönneberga by Astrid Lindgren 😍

this is decidedly cracky but i just imagined putting Nils from Young Royals in The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige): "The book is about a young lad, Nils Holgersson, whose "chief delight was to eat and sleep, and after that he liked best to make mischief""

Vila i frid, Selma Lagerlöf.  Author of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige) [Nils is seen above, riding a white goose, after he’s been turned into a tomte], Lagerlöf was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909) and the first woman admitted to the Swedish Academy (1914).  A schoolteacher by training, Lagerlöf was also a staunch suffragette (Sweden granted suffrage to women in 1919) and, as a close correspondent of the Jewish writer Nelly Sachs helped intervene with the Royal Family to effect Sachs’s escape from Nazi Germany in 1940 (Sachs went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966).  Lagerlöf died on this date in 1940 at the age of 81.

Hello! Can you recommend Swedish writers that are a must read? Sorry if you already answered this!
hello! :) the biggest must-read for any swede (or person speaking swedish) that wants to call themselves well-read to any degree would be

though do note that August Stringberg lived between 1849 and 1912 and the swedish language has undergone a lot since then, alors he can be a bit hard to understand if you’re not used to reading older literature

Selma Lagerlöf, member of Svenska Akademien and winner of Nobelpriset i litteratur, who amongst others wrote Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige, Gösta Berlings saga, Löwensköldska ringen, Charlotte Löwensköld

Draw the Swedes as famous Swedish characters!

SatW brother Sweden as “Nils Holgersson” from a famous book called “Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige” (Nils Holgersson’s wonderful journey througt Sweden) about a boy that’s mean against everyone, and one day meets a magic “Nisse” that turns him small to teach him a lesson. Nils then flies away with a Goose named “Mårten” and together they fly throughout Sweden.
Aph Sweden as “Madicken”. She’s a girl who lives in “Junibacken” with her sister and parents. she and her sister switch personalities a bit throughout the stories, but it’s a great book. One time Madicken tries to fly down from a roof with an umbrella.
and then we have sister Sweden as Pippi Longstocking. We have probably all Heard of her. RIGHT? *Swedish glare* well, she’s a girl who lives in Gotland (an iland in Sweden) together with her Monkey and Horse. She’s not like any average girl, no, no. She’s extremly strong!  She also has a suitcase filled with Money. The book is mostly written from the two other kid’s perspective, Tommy and Annika. They live a boring Life where they’re almost not allowed to do anything fun. So they hang out with Pippi, that Always has ideas on fun things to do.
God I love Pippi
Pippi was my childhood

I planned on reading Karin Boye's Kallocain as my first Swedish book this year but I ended up starting Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige. It's because I'll be travelling through Sweden this year and well, thought it would be nice to read it before I go. The story was written in 1906 and first I was afraid it'll be too difficult to read, but it's been fine? Sure, some verbs have weird past tenses, but I can understand them just fine.
The best thing is that there is the whole audiobook on Spotify and it's really nice to listen to, so I've been listening and reading at the same time which is great for learning. I've already come upon some words I was pronouncing incorrectly.
So far the book is entertaining but since it's so long, it's a bit daunting to get myself to read it. I've been trying to read for 30 minutes every day but still it'll take me probably two months to read it.

Selma Lagerlöf was born in Vaermland, Sweden, in 1858 and enjoyed a long and very successful career as a writer, receiving the Nobel-Price in Literature in 1909. She died in Vaermland in 1940. The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (Orig. Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige) is a famous work of fiction by Selma Lagerlöf, published in two parts in 1906 and 1907. The background for publication was a commission from the National Teachers Association in 1902 to write a geography reader for the public schools. "She devoted three years to Nature study and to familiarizing herself with animal and bird life. She has sought out hitherto unpublished folklore and legends of the different provinces. These she has ingeniously woven into her story." (From translator Velma Swanston Howard's introduction.) (Summary by Lars Rolander and Wikipedia] This is a Librivox recording. Many of us dive into books, living in other places and as other people for as long as the pages last. If we're lucky, the book is so good that the characters leap from the pages into our world, permeating our thoughts as we go through daily routines. Though small, this sculpture by Swedish artist Ralf Borselius is for me the quintessence of this beautiful dynamic. Even better, it is a monument to a book written by a woman author, Swede Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940), the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Entitled "Sprungen ur boken" (Out of the Book), the sculpture was unveiled on November 24, 2006, in Karlskrona, Sweden, to mark the 100th anniversary of the publication of Lagerlöf's book, "Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige" (Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey across Sweden). In the book and its second volume, which was published in 1907, mischievous 14-year-old Nils flies around Sweden on the back of a goose, taking in the country from top to tail. He runs into some trouble along the way, including in Karlskrona, which is perhaps why he's fleeing the pages of his own story. An English translation of the two volumes entitled "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" is available to download for free at Amazon: https://amzn.to/2SDQanJ. You can also see Nils' journey mapped out at WikiVoyage: https://tinyurl.com/y822c6fk.
