#theartassignment #youareanartist . One of my students is doing prompts from the great PBS YouTube series The Art Assignment. I said I’d join in so here I am. #ninakatchadourian @ninakatchadourian suggests a prompt of sorting books from someone’s library. Put them in three stacks to suggest a written portrait. I’ve decided to start with a self portrait. I encourage you to join in.

It’s 2019, and we’ve got five brand new artists-in-residence at The Huntington! Dana Johnson, Nina Katchadourian, Robin Coste Lewis, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz and Rosten Woo will all be creating new work inspired by our collections, focused around the theme of “utopia.”
Nina Katchadourian has been searching for monsters in the Library—in medical texts, ancient maps, and rare books.
Her interest in the subject stems from the idea that "Monsters quite readily make people think, fearfully and somewhat negatively, of unknowns, or of the unknowable—things that, in the way they seem different from what we think we are and what we think we know, are ultimately threatening. However, I am more interested in monsters as a catalyst for the imagination, as a kind of prompt that may help us to think—hopefully—about what we still don’t know and what may not be as fixed as we think it is."
Poet Robin Coste Lewis has been researching John James Audubon's life and work, with a specific focus on the landscapes and homes he depicted in the backgrounds of his illustrations.
Writer Dana Johnson has been researching the work of Delilah Beasley, a historian and news columnist who wrote about black pioneers in her book "Negro Trail-Blazers of California.”Johnson is also interested in the historic black community Allensworth, a California town founded in 1908.
Beatriz Santiago Muñoz has been exploring the plant cryopreservation lab at The Huntington, as she is interested in the implications of creating a "Noah's Ark" of seeds. Working with botanical curators, her focus has been on the preservation of Magnolia splendens and portoricensus, two tree species that are endangered. Both are trees are native to Puerto Rico, where Muñoz is from.
Muñoz has also spent time filming in the themed, manicured gardens of The Huntington, a contrast to the native habitats of her homeland.
Rosten Woo has been researching the papers of Robert Hine, a scholar of the American West whose research focused on early utopian settlements in California. He has also been studying landscapes produced during an expedition led by John Russell Bartlett. Bartlett was hired to draw the border between Mexico and the U.S. after the Mexican American War in 1846.
Woo is interested in how these communities were formed and funded, and in exploring the relationships between "utopias" and the outside world
The Huntington is collaborating with Clockshop for the fourth year of our contemporary arts initiative /five. The project will culminate in an exhibition that opens in November 2019.

The Genealogy of the Supermarket. Nina Katchadourian. Framed photographs and wood on wallpapered wall, 144 x 360 inches, 2005-ongoing
Back when I lived in Austin, the Blanton had a Nina Katchadourian retrospective, and I was just absolutely blown away by her work- it all had this great sense of playfulness, but also a real edge to it. The piece I admired most was this “family tree” of commercial food mascots. By extending this idea of Mascots to such an absurdist place, she also forces us to sit in the choices made when creating these characters, such as giving them specific ethnicities. Even now, as we have wrestled with this more publicly, we have rarely paused to ask the why here... and not why in the sense that there could be a good reason (cuz obviously nope), or even in the sense that intention should have any bearing on whether it’s offensive, but just interrogating what is actually being communicated.*
* Worth also noting the excellent episode + followup by the Sporkful podcast about use of the term “plantation” in food marketing

Week 12 Lecture
Recap + Decolonising Design
This week’s lecture we recapped about the previous lectures we had through the semester. Andy and Karen also added a bonus content with the topic of decolonising design. The idea of decolonising design is to open up our perspectives and look at questions of gender in design. Female designers are mentioned to not get as much recognition than male designers. However, nowadays female designers are thriving and getting more of the appreciation they deserve.
[Thought] This was the final lecture of the course, and after looking through at what has been discussed in the lectures, I realized how much it expanded my knowledge regarding the whole idea of design. I never really looked into how female designers have been underappreciated compared to male designers, but now I understand the issue more clearly and glad that is changing for the better of female designers.
Anni Albers
Tumblr media
Anni Albers (12 June 1899, Berlin - 9 May 1994, Orange) was one of the most significant textile artists of the 20th century. She works with striking geometric patterns and her works are noted for a radical use of color that helped pioneer the Modernist movement. She studied under Martin Brandenburg and also with Paul Klee at the Bauhaus school, where she became a teacher herself.  Throughout her life she experimented with materials and inspired a cultural reassessment of fabrics as an art form.
Tolu Coker
Tumblr media
Tolu Coker is a young British-Nigerian Fashion Designer, Textile Designer and Illustrator from London. Following several successful stunts at Maison Margiela, J.W. Anderson and Celine, Coker graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martin's Design school in June 2017 with First Class Honours. Mostly inspired by the politics of identity and social climates, Coker’s designs are influenced by her multi-disciplinary practice and artisan craftsmanship merged with the use of innovative technology.
Nina Katchadourian
Tumblr media
Nina Katchadourian is an multidisciplinary artist whose work includes video, performance, sound, sculpture, photography and public projects. Her possibly most famous project is called the “Sorted Books”, in which Katchadourian rearranges the contents of private and public bookshelves so that the books’ spines read as a consecutive statement. Other series have featured such idiosyncratic subjects as subway maps, mascots of common cleaning products, the sound of popping corn, car alarms, birdcalls, and items available on airplane flights.

Aspietip: Talking can feel like a big production for the aspergirl. Not only do we often translate others' speech to something understandable, we're also trying to match our responses appropriately by running through previously thought out scripts. Even more, aspie female voices often sound different, either high-pitched or raspy and inflectionless. #knowyourdiagnosis #aspergirls #talkingpopcorn #ninakatchadourian

Thank you @ninakatchadourian for letting me post this story about Lucy 🇦🇲 “ To commemorate Armenian Genocide Day today, I'm posting this picture of Lucine (Lucy) Katchadourian, who was orphaned in the Armenian Genocide and was taken into my father's family, before he was born, when she was about 12. I grew up very close to her. Here are a few Lucy-isms I think about often: She called the freezer the "frison," like it was a place where food was imprisoned. She bought massive amounts of red peppers from the Farmer's Market to "put away for winter" (this is now in suburban CA). She got on a ladder, probably already in her 70s at this point, and picked the olives that grew on the traffic median's decorative olive trees and pickled them. She referred to Pres. Clinton as "President Bill." She took care of all of us, her whole life. (Photo here by the amazing Margo Davis).” #theunsungheroines

SO WELL SEEN! ♥️ Check out this wonderful review of last summer's @thevisionboardshow show at @KopeikinGallery. Curator extraordinaire #ElizabethValdez just forwarded a link to the @HumbleArtsFoundation story by @debonthearts that somehow slipped under our collective radar. 🛰 It is a joy to see my work so well described and understood, particularly a rare conceptual piece that traffics in irony. I am bowled over by the review, ironically one that describes my collage piece as a "Goop-y, Pinterest-y nightmare." Thank you! (no irony intended) 😉 The show itself was memorable for it's clever curation and the overall strength of work (not to mention a who's who of fancy LA artists). Krieger's article also features evoquative consideration of work by @hubbyco, @erikarothenberg1 , @guy_richards_smit, @NinaKatchadourian, @katieshapirostudio & @n_buchanan_art. 🚀 If you have a moment, please check it out. The piece ends with this quote, "The Vision Board stands as a testament to the importance of the existence of artists, especially in times of turmoil." Amen to that. 👀 http://hafny.org/blog/2019/8/a-new-exhibition-elevates-vision-board-kitsch-into-futuristic-prophecy Link in profile tonight only! ☝️ Link to show: https://www.kopeikingallery.com/exhibitions/vision-board 🌎 Osceola Refetoff, The Dream of Sustainability, magazine clippings and postage stamp on archival pigment print, 2019 🌪 #ospix #futuristicprophecy @#thevisionboardshow #artexhibit #contemporaryart #conceptualart #losangelesartist #losangelesgalley #laart #laartscene #collage #livingwithart #friendswithtalent 🙏 https://www.instagram.com/p/CBNBaSMAmWa/?igshid=17yoebfmsbqar
