Ya the appeal of Rose is she's so normal and human and unabashedly lower class. But also: -She barely flinched when surrounded by murderous dummies. -She dragged the guy who blew up her work into her home when he inexplicably turned up at her door. -She followed him down the block demanding answers when the plastic arm attacked. -She went to a stranger's home to find out more about him. -She fairly calmly pulled the fire alarm and directed people out while a (now headless) plastic copy of her boyfriend is attacking. -She just immediately accepts that the Doctor is an alien. (She answers awfully quickly, girly is into aliens lol) -She's taken to watch her planet burn and almost dies and just wants chips afterwards -She nearly dies by murderous alien ghosts and is down to do it as long as she goes out fighting with the Doctor. -She tells the Doctor to do what it takes to save the world without knowing the risk to herself. -She accepts a Dalek is about to kill her and tells the Doctor she wouldn't have missed it for the world. -She antagonizes that Dalek about not shooting her -She rips open the Tardis to look into her heart to get back to the Doctor -She becomes a time goddess to save the Doctor This girl is so normal and so fucking unhinged and not normal at the same time. When it comes to fight or flight response she has either none or fight. She's nineteen and just so chill with the concept she might die.

“essek wants the gods dead” “oooh, this is going to change essek’s mind about the gods” i’m sorry but that boy is a cultural luxonite. he has no strong opinions on the gods other than ‘well, they sure empirically exist’. he might have some issues with his home faith (understatement) but he was still raised in an ancient battlefield literally scarred by the horrors of the calamity where the prime deities are a bunch of affectionately tolerated minority cults. his entire society thinks they transcended the need for Gods with Shapes and my man is not immune to the luxon-centric chauvinism of his upbringing.
sure, given another few years under ludinus’ thumb he could have probably been swayed to team deicide, but that’s not where’s he’s at. where he’s at is hanging out in rexxentrum, getting made fun of by caleb for referring to the dawnfather as ‘an influential, if over anthropomorphized solar deity’. you can take the elf out of rosohna but you can’t take rosohna out of the elf. the gods? well, fjord and caduceus are very fond of theirs (tone of someone describing their friends’ baffling but periodically lifesaving hobby). he technically works for one now through the cobalt soul and he can respect her ethos. after that he runs out of things to say about them.
now the luxon, on the other hand… he’s watching this entire directors cut triple-feature like a hawk. trying to divine the secrets of the universe from a reality show and it might just work.

i think a lot about hot sauce and jeannemary. two young girls so ready to kill and to die. a comparison made all the worse when you recall that hot sauce lost all her family to the cohort, that she can specifically recall fourth style necromancy (using corpses as bombs). a fourteen and thirteen year old that could easily have been on opposite sides of the same front line.

can i just say, that one of my favorite traits to add to a character is casual and unabashed horniness? i'm sick of characters who are only horny when the plot demands it. i'm sick of characters who are only horny because they're a fuckboy. love that completely casual everyday morally neutral horniness.

Finding out that John's magic was a spontaneous gift from a dying planet has me so excited about my theory that necromancy originates from a connection to the Resurrection Beasts.
Like, the RBs are the dead souls of planets, right? Necromancers can only be born in the Houses, meaning within the thanergetic field of those planetary bodies, which implies a connection between the ability and the Beasts. Then in Nona we see that an RB's mere presence drives any necromancer—and only necromancers—insane, and Varun can channel its consciousness through the body of a nearby necromancer.
John's necromancy originated from Alecto, even before they were The Man Who Became God and the God Who Became (Hu)man. So it would make sense if the necromancy of the Sixth House originates from the soul of their planet, too, and so on.

okay okay. hear me out. shitty ya tlt works with gideon as the girl still. shes the poor mistreated orphan who is the secret long lost princess and heir to the empire and harrow is a mysterious Bad Boy necromancer with Cool Black Hair and is built somehow? and gideon has the Special Girl eyes already and long red hair and harrow has to train her to sword fight bc ofc ya guy harrow can sword fight despite never needing to. and theres a scene where gideon gets her hair cut. for some reason. and all the guys have to reassure her shes still beautiful and male ianthe just grows her hair back and its a plotpoint that goes nowhere. i read a lot of shitty ya fantasy in high school forgive me. babs is hinted to be gay and still dies horrifically.
this is horrible 👍 thanks

Ianthe and I are truly from different worlds. If Gideon Nav wanted to play hero for me, I would be in need of rescue every day of the rest of my life.

it’s crazy that gideon is what, twenty? and considers herself to be married. like, sometimes i forget that she grew up in a hypersecluded, deeply religious society but she really would be the type to be in a committed longterm lives-together relationship by the age of like 23

For most stories, content falls into one of two categories:
Material that is described in canon
Material that is not described in canon
The former category includes any events that occur in the text of the book (or on-screen in the show, etc). The latter category is everything else: fanfic, headcanons, fan theories, technically word of god (which is really just suggested headcanons)
Sometimes, the author is ambitious and includes a third category:
Material that is written in canon but doesn’t actually occur in canon
The Locked Tomb takes this to a pretty big extreme. Around half of the second book never actually happened: it’s either Harrow’s hallucinations or Harrow’s false dreambubble recreation of the what happened in the first book. This is also the B-plot of the third book: John’s dreambubble recreation of a memory of a story told to Alecto. We’re three steps removed from what actually happened back then!

thinkin thots about varus the eater,,,, when i read htn and was introduced to the whole 'RB induced insanity' and how the lyctors perceived the Beasts, i assumed it was your classic 'cosmic horror too large for the human mind to convey appears in form that teeters on the edge of reality' , but now with ntn telling us everyone sees an RB the same way, I'm being led to believe its more 'cosmic desire so large it almost ruptures the brain but is still ultimately recognisable' 1/2
(varun anon) what is that desire? it presumably changes from beast to beast, and because we don't know anything about the others apart from some descriptions (though i am curious about what a beast that is received as 'beautiful' by human standards[the one who was trying to drown mercy and only softly repeated 'die'] could possibly want, considering how we have alecto the haunted barbie doll and how much she hates being 'pretty') 2/3 now lmao
(varun anon for the last time i promise/lh) assuming that varun is presenting as their body pre-Oh-Fuckening, it means their cosmic desire is home!!!!!! it makes so much sense why they love none so much and are so ready to come to her aid
Yo, I had assumed the same thing, that the nature of a Resurrection Beast depended on the observer, not the Beast itself. But you're right, Varun proves otherwise! Why do all the Resurrection Beasts appear as different kinds of cosmic horror? Why a giant head? Why something beautiful that tried to gently drown them? Why a giant glowing blue orb?
If Varun is the ghost of Uranus, then that really is just... what it looked like in life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, there is the difference in location to consider. This is Varun periscoping, peeking out into the physical world, while the other Resurrection Beasts that Augustine and Mercy describe were in the River. We don't know what a fully realised Varun might look like.
So what does Varun want? Does it want to go home, is that why it looks like itself? If home is a place, the solar system, there would be nothing stopping it from going there. Like any revenant, it must have a thanergetic link it could follow back to its corpse. If home isn't a place but a time when it was alive, a part of its existence now ended, then home is beyond even it now.
Most revenants have links to their murderers, too, if it's looking for John: which it seems like it was, prior to the events of Harrow the Ninth. It isn't anymore.
There's only one reason for Varun to be hanging over New Rho, and that's Nona. It's looking for Alecto, the Earth, the last living representative of its kind. I had thought it was looking for her to enact vengeance on its behalf, and it does want that. It asked for it in as many words, the first time it possessed Judith. But...
“They concoct their own vengeance,” said the Captain. “Their justice is not my justice. Their water is not my water. I came to help. I am made a mockery. The danger is upon you, and you do not even know … they are coming out of their tower, salt thing. There is a hole at the bottom of their tower. I will pull their teeth. I will make it blank for you.”
There is clearly a wrong way to go about it, in Varun's opinion. Who or what the "they" is in this statement is not entirely clear, if it's even referring to the same thing every time. The 'they' coming out of their tower would seem to be the devils possessing people, the things that took Colum back in Canaan House. Is their justice not Varun's justice? If it doesn't want what the devils want, then what is its vision of justice, what vengeance does it want Alecto to enact?
