Gintoki vs Nizou

Text
Both in the Infant Strife and the Battle of Rakuyo arc, Gintoki wins a fight against an opponent lacking normal eyesight who compensates in other ways and is still dangerous (Batou much moreso than Nizo, but Nizo does have good feats).
In both cases, not only does the narrative first fool the audience by following along with the opponent's mistaken view of reality, but when the truth is revealed it's still perhaps not entirely clear to everyone what really happened, or at least how the opponent was deluded.
And then there is what happens in chapter 703...
Was this aspect of the other two fights foreshadowing that final battle?

A cup of sake - Part IV
First part - Previous part - Table of contents
Okada Nizou x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
Nizou startled awake, his hands shaking from the last grasp of the terrible nightmare he had been subjected to. He had been immersed in terrible, excruciating darkness, with no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch, nothing, not even the slightest light to remind him of when he was still able to see. His thirst for it subverted him, making him look for his katana. He terribly needed to see the light shine for him, to dispel the last remnants of that nightmare.
When he started to move, he realised that he was not in one of the rooms he would rent on his journeys, there was also a familiar smell that slowly soothed him. It was like steel in a dying fire. Once he had noticed it, he instantly remembered you and he turned his face to his right to witness your peculiar light. It was not what he had in mind when he woke up, but strangely it was enough. It was what he needed. For the first time since he had met you, after having wanted two times to kill you and make you shine, he took the time to really look at you.
Your light was not a bright, clear, blinding one. Not at all. It was more like a coal hidden under a pile of ashes in a bonfire. It was not screaming of liveliness, nonetheless, it was incredibly persistent, moved by an unrivalled stubbornness. At first, he could have sworn that it would shut down without him doing anything, but now it was not so sure. It kept glowing forth, despite everything, despite him. He then realised that it would always stay like this, no matter every time he would come back, like an unwavering flicker in the dark. Not truly alive. Not truly dead. And it made him feel so relieved.
“Good morning, handsome”, you greeted when opening your eyes to see him sitting up.
His hair was a mess and he still did not have his usual sunglasses, however, you found him even more beautiful like this, at his natural.
“Good morning, honey”, he answered in a suave tone that took you by surprise.
A sudden warmth on your cheeks told you that you were blushing, making you embarrassed of yourself to be that weak to him. Meanwhile, Nizou was a bit uncertain, now that he had come to an understanding of what he wanted, staying near you, enjoying your presence and light; he still was not certain of what you wanted. Was it the moment for him to take his leave? Usually, the few people he had spent a night with, had always ended the relationship there, not wanting to keep involving them with him.
The silence became awkward, Nizou suddenly regretted not having left before you woke up. Still, he could always rectify it now, he just had to tell you that he had to go. The last thing he wanted was for you to feel bothered by him and never see him again.
“I w-...”, he started but you talked at the same time without thinking.
“Do you want to shower together? Sorry, what did you want to tell me?”
You were a bit sore from last night's activities, and because of the alcohol, so you had taken your time to sort your thoughts and now you had spoken at the same time as Nizou.
“Nothing you need to concern yourself with”, he finally decided with a smirk. “Last night was not enough to satisfy you?”
“It was truly delightful, nonetheless I am not sure my little shower can withstand our enthusiasm”, you explained guffawing.
“I will settle for a shower then…”
He reached to your face and you let him caress your cheek, sighing with delight. You closed your eyes, enjoying it until he touched your neck. You gasped in pain, surprising the both of you. Nizou stopped remembering what he had done. He instantly took back his hand, and gilt came crushing him.
“It finally looks like a bad idea to keep involving yourself with me”, he suddenly realised.
“What are you talking about?”, you said, reaching for his fleeing hand. “I do not remember saying that it did not please me?”
You sat up too, then reached your hand to his face, gently caressing him.
“Do not fret, if I do not like something, you will be the first to know. As for that, it’s only a couple of bruises, nothing to be scared of.”, you tried to ease him, he let you touch him but his hands were still clenched. “Will it make you feel better to use a safe word? So when I feel like you will hurt me you know you need to stop?”
“Are you really not scared of what I can do?” Nizou answered with another question. “I really could kill you.”
“I think right now I’m more scared to see you leave than you hurting me”, you truthfully revealed. “And I will not simply let myself be killed, do not worry.”
You put your head on his shoulder, breathing his scent and kissing his nice and warm skin. He still felt tense under your touch, and it made your chest ache.
“What can I do or say to help you?”
“Tell me more about that safe word…”
Two hours later, you were both clean, refreshed and dressed. You were now both standing in the main room of your house.
“Can you grab me the scarf on the right shelf?” You asked him while finishing to adjust your jimbei.
“I was beginning to appreciate the idea of you wearing my marks”, Nizou disclosed with a wry smile that made you laugh.
“You will have other opportunities, but for now I need to work and I don’t need to hear people gossip about me.”
“Fair enough”, he carefully placed the orange scarf around your neck, vigilant not to hurt you any further.
Once again, you blushed under his soft and affectionate ways with you. Finally, he kissed you tenderly on your lips.
“Until next time.”

GINTAMA 642 REVIEW
Tumblr media
Good cover
Tumblr media
Master of titles strikes again
Tumblr media
and while all this chapter you will be worried about Bansai pay a notice to shamisen detailes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wounded hero reach for destanation but there are even more enemies. This is so classic.
Tumblr media
No but this feels kind of forced. Since when he and Bansai are close?
Tumblr media
To say the truth I does not clearly remember what plan was about.
Tumblr media
So Bansai pretty much crusifixed himself. Also interesting to see Amanto know so much about earth music.
Tumblr media
Oh Bansayushka
Tumblr media
But how about it is still going to fire?  That would be amazing. Sorry but this chapter was not very informative if you ask me.
So next chapter official release is 15th one day after live-action and if Sorachi not going to give it some good kick in chapter I shall be personally offended

I finally got to watch the Gintama live action movie - on the airplane from Tokyo, of all places xD
It was much better than expected, although I thought the beginning was significantly better than the end. Here be my thoughts
Things I loved:
The entire first half. It was very true to Gintama spirit. Laughed so much each time they ran into the Shinsengumi in the woods and that dramatic movie played.
Shinpachi was perfect af. “Kondo-san, you’re beautiful.” “You just told us everything.” Deadpan perfection. I adore him.
Most everyone was really well cast tbh. My one and only reservation was Kagura, who I think they cast for looks over comedic ability. But overall A+ job.
Nausicaa!!!!!! that was amazing.
Tae didn’t have a lot of scenes but the few she was in she dominated. I love the Shimura family.
Kondo was hilarious. I had felt he was just too small to be Kondo in the promo photos, but his acting was stupendous. So funny.
Shinpachi infiltrating the Kiheitai ship XD
I read some complaints about Oguri Shun’s Gintoki but I really thought he was fantastic. Funny and ridiculous and sympathetic. I think he probably came across over the top in the beginning, but it fits the movie in its entirety and I def felt a lot better about the beginning by the time I was halfway through.
Okada Masaki’s Katsura was friggin hilarious and Katsura to a T. I wonder if we’ll see any of him in the sequel. He’s not in any other plot-centric arcs before the prison break. And that’d be quite a time jump. I’ll miss him if he’s not ;_; so funny
Things I didn’t love:
Takechi - Let’s just get this out of the way. The pedo jokes went too far for me. I know it’s a running gag in the manga but I had always felt it was just Matako egging him on - the movie def gave me the impression that there’s at least some truth to it. Come on, Japan. Takechi was funny otherwise, it’s too bad they had to totally ruin him with this stupidity.
Too much monologuing during fights. But that... is Gintama, so I can hardly complain. There’s too much of it in the manga so no wonder there’s too much of it in the movie.
I know they had to let Hijikata fight, because he’s Hijikata. (Even though there was an entire mini-series to be released focusing on the Shinsengumi where he’d get to fight plenty...) And I understand even better when Takasugi got to fight. Can’t exactly say it was a fulfilling battle, or that someone who wasn’t already in the know about Gintama would’ve been impressed with it. But I get why they did it. HOWEVER. They totally didn’t let Katsura fight at all. They changed the entire ending, and I honest to goodness feel it was better and more dramatic in the original. Not to mention it hardly makes sense how the Harusame were apparently just like “peace out bro”!
Idk things:
Kagura - she’s one of my absolute favs in the manga/anime but I had trouble getting used to Hashimoto Kanna. She just seemed too lady-like and I didn’t always believe her Kagura-style humor. Her battle scene on the ship was excellent though.
The weird way Elizabeth seemed like he’s somehow “always with” Katsura at the end... amusing but also wtf...
Katsura: “What would Gintoki say if I left you two behind!” Kagura & Shinpachi: “Just go!” Katsura: “ok”
Gintoki: “I’ll fight Nizo - you go arrest Takasugi.” Hijikata: “OK, after all it’s not as if all the Shinsengumi are after him already and Nizo is so super-powered that a single person can’t take him out alone and I’d be way more useful double-teaming with you. My battle scene was totally irrelevant. Good luck see you.” *later* “Hey, Gintoki. Lol obviously I didn’t even manage to do the thing I deserted you to do.” xD This is what comes of trying to insert characters into stories where they’re not supposed to be.
Takasugi was pretty Takasugi-like, I mean he was fine. Maybe it’s because I’m pretty whatever about Takasugi in general (except for his battle with Gintoki in Shogun Assassination, which I love), especially post Rakuyou-Takasugi who is just so uninteresting to me now that he’s lost most of his antagonist qualities. But I would be curious to see him highlighted more. It only makes sense that a sequel would focus on Takasugi to a degree. I wonder if they’ll do Shogun Assassination.
Random other thought: There was unexpected shipping fodder for GintokixOkita of all things hahahahahha.
It was good - up until just past the Nausicaa bit, I was thinking I’d like to buy it. But then the battle and aftermath just weren’t very interesting for me and I kind of lost interest. I’ll happily rewatch it if I get the chance though.

A cup of sake - Part VIII (last part)
First part - Previous part - Table of contents
Okada Nizou x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
“You will have to distract him for as long as you can”, you explained to the man with white hair.
There were dust, rumbles, and wires everywhere preventing you from seeing much, while the loud sounds of the fighting outside compelled you to speak at the top of your lungs.
“Who the hell are you??” He asked, succeeding in looking annoyed despite his worrying state.
“I want the same thing as you, to stop Nizou.”
You glared at him, hoping your sincerity could be read in your face and eyes.
“You can trust her”, Tetsuko showed her trust towards you, still holding her injured brother against her chest.
“Rah, fine! But don't count on me to risk my neck for you!”
You bowed your head thankfully to him and your blacksmith friends, before running to the back of the room. It was awful how huge Nizou was now, deformed, monstrous. It took you all your willpower to ignore the threatening feeling that it was already too late.
You were now in his back while Gintoki was giving a brave and inspiring speech, focusing the mad man's attention on him. You took your katana off your belt, unsheathing it slowly. The blade shone shortly, meeting with the air with pleasure. Your first born. An orange guard, soft under your fingers. You were no fighter, but today you would try everything to save your loved one.
The two enemies jumped on each other, and you used the split second to reach for a specific point of Benizakura you had finally succeeded in adding. It was like a safeguard, an ultimate disengaging device. But was it not already too late for that?
Nizou roared, making the walls shake, before falling to the ground under Gintoki’s hand. Benizakura’s weapons disappeared, letting his body go back to more normal size but the damages did not go away. There were big holes pumping blood where the wires had pierced his body, and of course, the blade's cuts from his fight.
You stood up beside him, unable to think, or rather avoiding losing yourself in useless fears and doubts. The other people were glaring at you, watching out for your possible fit of rage.
However, you simply raised the body on your shoulders. He was so light, so damn light… Painful tears rolled on your cheeks. And when you walked passed to the intruders they simply let you go on Gintoki's signal.
“Let's go, Love”, you decided, smiling bravely, “we still have a cup of sake to share.”

Note
the thing that bothered me about nizou-bansai scene is that after bansai's death, takasugi tells takechi to take care of matako because bansai would be angry if something happened to her - but bansai is perfectly okay with finding strength in his dying moments by imagining the guy who choked out matako?
Bansai wasn’t present in that scene: it seems probable he had already left to conduct negotiations with the Harusame by then. From Bansai’s POV, I think it makes good sense he would remember Nizô as a comrade and a brother-in-arms, one who took it upon himself to become nothing but a weapon - to be consumed by a living weapon, even - in order to serve Takasugi.
Perhaps Bansai would even think, looking back, that he had failed Nizô as a comrade (and as a vice-commander of the Kiheitai) in not trying to stop that from happening. After all, if the Benizakura plan had never existed, maybe Nizô would still be alive and fighting alongside the others on the mothership right then. Or perhaps such a thought never occurred to Bansai, being similarly devoted to Takasugi and also recognizing that Nizô made his own choice, played his own song.
But in any case: while we the audience find Nizô a lot less appealing than Bansai, from Bansai’s POV it makes sense he’d be more in tune with seeing what united them rather than what made them different from each other. As we had in the previous episodes learnt the backstory of the Kiheitai’s forming, and come to look at the members in a somewhat different light, it only seemed appropriate to me that the first major Kiheitai member to die in the story was brought back in this fashion, and that the shades of other fallen Kiheitai soldiers came along with him.
