i had to reread n edit this before posting like i was going over an essay jesus christ ((tristamp spoilers))

tldr; i was honestly disappointed but i still don't think it was completely awful + i hope if they do a 2nd season it's better *wants to see milly*.... fuck the director though

most of this was written before the finale eek

the major problems were that the pacing was soooooo weird n some of the changes (both story wise and design wise) they made were questionable esp towards the latter half

my positive points:

i do still think individual eps at the first half were really good

i loved the animation + how they used colors

the backgrounds are cool

the artstyle shift in wolfwood's flashback was cool

i've always been "ok" abt vashwood honestly (sorry) but i will acknowledge they were very yaoiful here. i saw a person who didn't ship vashwood say the ep in tristamp where they literally just met made them ship it which was really funny bc how did that change your mind so fast

i'm ngl the milly + eriks name drops made me *JAWDROP* but that's something that only matters to ppl who watched/read the ogs first

my negative points (uh oh):

white washed wolfwood (+ his skintone is soo inconsistent in merch)

they gave vash no room to breathe n he doesn't get big sillay moments after ep 3

^ this is true for every character except i guess roberto? more on roberto later

^^^ goes with the previous too points but it felt like they were way too focused on the drama n sadness without enough (long lasting) happy or hopeful moments to contrast or balance it out overall - to the point were the characterization of our main cast suffered for it bc there wasn't enough there with them to make that properly work. and THEN the silly moments ended up suffering too bc they start feeling out of place. the drama beats kept happening one after the other at breakneck speed without breaks, messing up the pacing as well (i can kinda blame this at least partially on the fact they only had 12 eps when the og was 26 eps but i've watched plenty of 12 ep series with great pacing so i don't really know what happened here?)

i disagreed with this at first, but the lore with vash being front-loaded really did hurt the story a bit in the long run. obviously they did still spread the full details out over the course of the show but it was :\

specific to "the running man"- it's my fav ep tbh but it was strange how all the townsfolk were partying w the nebraskas with no indication they'd arrest them after they did so much damage n vash didn't even get to fix the damaged plant?? so why were they so joyous when the initial problem wasn't solved?

roberto.... was such a weird character... he managed to be both a dick n a guy w no personality, he was there to give exposition + attempt to be funny? n then die. also the marketing staff fucking hates him he's never in any merch wtf ((edited after the finale: well now we know he wasn't meant to replace milly (i had a whole paragraph complaining abt that lol) + now i feel like they added him just to kill someone other than wolfwood off))

i can't speak much on elendria bc i had so much trouble reading trimax forever ago that i never retained anything abt her other than she's trans, but everything involving her in tristamp felt strange/ like it didn't work. i have essentially same feeling about livio here. they threw legato to the side??

what the fuck was the thing with the plants towards the end. it just hit me what the hell

minor nitpicks:

i miss the old anime's ost :( tristamp's ost isn't bad by any means n there are tracks that i really like it's just idk man. especially with the the op song, i couldn't get myself to not skip the op SORRY. could you imagine how hype it would've been if a new rendition of H.T. or NO-BEAT started playing

i'm fine with stamp vash's design (blasphemous i know) but man would'n've one of his og coat designs worked well in 3d? i feel like it would've ((added after the finale: the new coat did look nice in black + they brought back his old hair in the last ep tho so. MAYBE... IN SEASON 2.... CLASSIC COAT....? *delusional*))

about your last post re: june, mayla and wlw representation

i didnt know people hated june so much until i went on twitter and I'm genuinely baffled. didn't we say we wanted more wlw characters, and that we were starved for rep?

i genuinely thought that getting mad at a character who "gets in the way" of a ship was a cishet thing but clearly twitter users proved me wrong.

i totally get people being upset that mayla isn't endgame because of the realism thing and i think that's justified because there are a lot of (het) couples that would realistically broke up in skam france and yet they pull this shit with the only sapphic couple. (they literally made charles and manon endgame...)

i also get that people would be a little upset if maya ended up with june because

a) mayla is a beloved, popular couple

b) maya and june would have less screentime than mayla considering mayla happened in s6 and then they had little moments in s 7/8 too

however this extreme hate for june (and even eleonore sadly, but for her it's less because she was never a real threat to mayla) is literally too much. now i don't wanna say anything but even as a white person, it feels like they are so quick to disregard a gnc, sapphic character of color in favor of a white gc girl like lola.

once again, i get the love for lola and wanting mayla to be endgame, but

a) the introduction of another sapphic character, especially a gnc character of color, is revolutionary. i mean, think about how many gnc female characters we have in the skamverse and how many of them are woc. think.

b) maya should have friends outside of la mif who aren't biased, especially if these friends are queer woc like her, she deserves it, and her life doesn't revolve around lola, she's her own person

june also didn't do anything wrong, as far as i know she's been pretty good to maya.

i would be upset too if mayla didn't end up together but on the bright side we would have a sapphic couple with two woc, which we only had once in the skamverse with kietou and it's in general a pretty rare thing.

people are also making comments towards june's looks and i do not like it in the slighest. did they forget that june is played by an actress who could see their comments? this is not simply about a fictional character, angéle is a real person and they could be hurt by the comments.

and the way people are also praying for anais to be sapphic and be s10 main while disregarding a canon sapphic character like june..

all of this doesn't feel right with me, and i don't wanna see these people complaining about sapphic rep ever again.

right?? all of this!!! like it's so terrible to see the way ppl treat her just bc they wanted to see more mayla n i know some ppl would claim that the solution to this is "don't check twitter" which is often great life advice in general but this isn't rly an issue of curating ur ~fandom experience~ or whatever it truly is just a huge problem w "fandom/shipping culture" that's worth talking abt especially since this shit happens to characters of color all the time.

i also agree that the actual criticism is completely justified too, we shouldn't have to worship every writer n director for simply including wlw stories if those stories r mistreated n the points abt how this happened to the only wlw couple vs how the other couples were treated is extremely valid. the season isn't flawless representation by any means but those reasons are completely different from what these ppl are complaining abt like maya moving on after a break up n hooking up w other girls rly shouldn't be considered the death of wlw rep like these ppl would have u believe 😭

it's so apparent that ppl who hate on her do so out of bullshit reasons bc as u said her presence n role in the plot is actually a good thing. it makes sense in the overall story they chose to write n is actually one of the better written parts of the season. maya having someone there for her is a good thing n she shares a lot of experiences w her like their care for the environment, activism, being wlwoc, they clearly have fun together, they have things to talk abt n maya has been able to open up to her in a way she hasn't been in a long time. it's also so good that she has contacts outside of la mif like u said like!! them spending time together is a logical part of the season it's not "bad writing" just bc ppl would prefer to see lola....

At All Might’s funerals, his wife gives him a speech, as a farewell.

warning : death, angst, y'all gonna cry like I did.

spoil desperate housewives S8 : totally inspired by Mike's funerals episode, hence the video at the end of the story

if you watched it I hope you thought abt that when you read the title

notes for the story : (S/N) is son's name, you're in your 40s and you have been married to all might for 15 years, your son is roughly 10 years old.

          'Heroes always get remembered, but legends never die'. That was what was pronounced on TV when the All Might passed. It was not long enough after his students graduated from Yuei. The Symbol of Peace just wasn't anymore, and All for One had came back to avenge himself, once more. Deku, the 'new All Might' arrived to fight the villain, finally defeating him after all those years.

            But his mentor died a few minutes after. Journalists were there -they were always there- and recorded the whole scene. Oh, how sad it was. And how much Toshinori had talked about what his wife, his child, and Deku meant to him. All for One had actually came for his whole family, but even with his quirk almost totally gone, Toshinori had fought until he couldn't anymore, to protect his wife. Thanks God, (S/N) wasn't at home.

           (Y/N) had run to her husband once she was sure All for One couldn't do anything anymore. He was bleeding, so much. Most of it was coming from the wound the villain had made during their first fight. ''MIDORIYA ! DO SOMETHING !'' She screamed, holding her man's body close, pressing at the wound like it would prevent the blood from falling. But he couldn't do anything anymore, except joining her to listen to the man's last words.

         Many many people came to the Symbol of Peace's funerals, but only his family and friends were allowed to assist to it. (Y/N) had a speech, of course she had one. She didn't prepare it, but she knew she was going to say some thing at some point. And she finally was able to walk to the microphone towards the end of the ceremony. She waited for a few seconds to catch her breath, and sighed heavily before starting.

           ''I... didn't prepare anything, actually. I mean, you don't prepare yourself to assist to someone's funerals, so...'' (Y/N) wasn't crying, no. She wasn't going to cry in front of everyone. 'Don't forget to smile.' Toshinori had taught her. She wasn't going to disappoint him now !

         ''You know, when you're the number one hero, you don't think that you can have time to take care of your family, and to take care of the citizens at the same time. But, Toshi managed to find a balance between those. Of course, we waited a bit for him to weaken before having a child, because I wouldn't have dare disturb him during his Golden Age, right ? He was so busy.''

         She had to blabber about his hero life a lot, since he was mostly known for that. It had always been his dream ; to be the number one hero. His existence itself decreased the attacks of villains ! She couldn't skip this part.

         But the part (Y/N) really wanted to talk about was the Toshinori Yagi's part. The man behind the hero. ''I loved him. Even when he wasn't smiling, even when he was weak. I still love him, and I think that... I'll love him forever. How many times I saw him exhausted, spitting blood, but still changing our baby's diaper, and helping me out in the house. He was also working on his teacher's job, and I really don't know how his organs didn't just stop functioning at some point.''

        That made some people chuckle, and that was a good thing. You need to smile, All Might said it. ''And for that, I'll be forever grateful. We'd been married for 15 years, and I think I saw him fully relaxing like 5 times only. And I was worried that he was always overworking himself, but it was to do all the things he loved.''

         People were crying, though. They managed to crack a smile every now and then, but almost everyone was crying. All of his students were there, and every single one of them were admiring him. But those were silent cries. The speech was the only thing that could be heard.

        ''I know that he had a good life, and he had nothing to regret. For some, he was a hero, someone to admire, and an example. For some, he was a friend, a parent, actually a human that could show weaknesses and feelings, and wasn't only this machine that could destroy any villain. But every single one of you knew about his family, about (S/N) and I.''

        The woman's eyes were wet, but it didn't look like any tear was going to fall and roll down her cheeks. ''And you told us 'don't be sad for him, he is in a better place'. But, I'm not sad for him. I mean, I am sad, but I actually believe that he really is in a better place.''

          That was weird how she liked beans for some reason, and how he liked rice because of it was the easiest meal to find in a hurry where they lived. But they both used to mix it so they'd both be happy with what they were eating. She stopped, thinking about this meal, wondering if she'll ever mix those ingredients ever again now. It's weird, how insignificant things travel your mind when the person dies. It was so natural you weren't even noticing it, and now that you won't do it anymore, you remembered the existence of that special thing.

       But, (Y/N) needed to focus on her speech, and kept talking instead. She still couldn't cry yet. ''I believe that he's fighting some villains, citizens everywhere, cheering for him. He's eating with his family, eating too fast so I have to tell him to calm down, because there's no need to rush, and (S/N) is laughing, wearing his All Might onesie. He's training his students, encouraging them. He's hanging out with his colleagues, telling me everything they talked about during those meetings once he's back home. And he's also on the beach, with 'Young Midoriyaaaa' to talk about his quirk.''

        She chuckled when she imitated him. He was surely yelling 'I WAS HERE' to those villains he was fighting, doing some poses if he was ever spotting a camera. ''And because he's at all those wonderful places, I have to tell him goodbye, now.'' She approached the coffin, it was still open. She put a hand on her heart, and the other on the coffin, looking at her husband for the last time. She sighed heavily, once again, before telling him her farewell.

''I love you once.''

For his hero form, the Symbol of Peace, the All Might.

''I love you twice.''

For his normal form, vulnerable, that he only showed to people he trusted.

''I love you more than beans and rice. Goodbye, All Might.''

I actually wanted to write this story with Shouta or Shoto, but I made them die once already djdjsk and the I love you once I love you twice was really fitting with Toshi's forms, so yeah

I also watched his fight against All for One again and got emotional

We generally have the plays split up along lines of “what we know”— we have a list at the very beginning of the blog. Sometimes we’ll draw the others’ characters (mostly me drawing some of Star’s…) but even then the final say on characterization is up to the “main” mod for that play — mod aster

I think my favorite play overall is Macbeth, just because I like the vibes (and the fact that I too could kill Macbeth), the fact that you don’t say it’s name in theatres, and the fact that it’s a play I did a full read through and analysis of in class. This is phrased like an ACT question and i might not answer it right so sorry in advance but: mod aster and i only selected a few plays for each of us to do given we dont know all of shakespeare’s works, but we tend to put more emphasis on the the more well known. But it also comes down to 1. How much we have plotted out for each play and 2. What the followers ask about most. Our two most popular are hamlet and macbeth bc people are familiar w those but around march caesar always becomes relevant again. I would say the same as star— it generally comes down to what people ask about. I will say that the overall plot is sort of separated into “has happened” and “is happening”. Like, the human potion of Midsummer, Julius Caesar, and Macbeth are all in the “aftermath” portion, while Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet, among others, are happening. We’re trying to incorporate as much as we can, and I don’t think any of them were really put in without some thought.— mod aster

I go to a theater school rn and so ive dealt w shakespeare (although not all of them) it also helps that i was in loves labours lost last year as moth and that i read hamlet and r n j. Theres also a theater in my state that always does One Big Shakespeare per season and they always do them super well!!! My love for shakespeare probably started w seeing midsummer at that theater w mod aster!!! So. Theater kid rights!! -- mod star

To be honest, I got back into Shakespeare Because of the blog. I’ve been friends with some people that got really Pretentious about Shakespeare, and it kinda put me off of it. I did have a book of abridged plays (the plays’ plots written out in prose, basically) that I read as a kid, which is what got me into not only the plots of a lot of the plays, but also the idea of having them illustrated. And, same as star, the theater in state does the One Big Shakespeare— and they tend to do some really cool things with the costumes, setting them in diff time periods. Uhh i started drawing when i was like idk 12 and i have the giant boxes of sketchbooks to prove it!!! I moved to digital art at abt 14-15 but mostly stayed traditional until this yr when i got a Neat New Tablet so some of my sketchbooks are sitting abandoned rip. Oh man. I started drawing when I was about 10, but it was Bad. I don’t think I got much into drawing again until I was about 14? Sometime around the end of middle school/beginning of high school. I would say I started getting into drawing as more than doodling/coloring edits sometime around 2015-16? I would draw on my iPad with my finger, then I got a tablet for my computer, and now I pretty much stick to my iPad with an Apple Pencil. My first Shakespeare play was….. uh…… probably Midsummer???? Met mod aster when i was like 4 and even tho we didnt live close we became like, best friends although the Best part didnt start until we were like 13-ish and eventually we talked like non stop (about anime and homestuck. Yknow. 13 year old kid things) and we didnt see each other a lot bc of Distance and now its even worse bc aster is in colleg.,e but we consider each other siblings regardless of family bc we’re adopted into our own respective families so that bled over into our friendship and it would feel weird calling him anything other than my brother now. It can depend on the piece? I was working on some (unrelated) oc prints that were song-focused, and for those I just listened to said song on loop. Sometimes I have playlists. Sometimes I’ll just be in a Mood and throw a song on loop. But a lot of time for the blog, I’ll listen to The Adventure Zone for the billionth time, because I have Too Much Attention. I’ve also, on request from Star, linked the most recent “loop song”.— mod aster

I tend to obsess over the same like 3 songs every few weeks so those get listened to on repeat but it also depends on the tone of what im drawing or who im drawing i might genre switch bc of that. If im drawing ophelia i stick to lana del rey and if im drawing hamlet its the neighborhood, horatio is sufjan stevens etc. i have categorized,. Most of the characters i draw into different songs/genres/energies of music but not like i ever follow that. Sometimes i just pull up a really long nonsense video and forget to draw. How did you end up deciding the rough timeline of events in canon? (@pedanticlecturer)

It’s mostly determined by like. How we choose per story? If that makes sense. Like, we just take story by story, and decide “is it happening, has it happened, and when?” And then we fit them together in relation to each other just by dint of. All existing at once. Like, I knew I wanted Macbeth to be in aftermath, because like, even though there’s no murder, the way I’ve translated it to the AU is still kinda heavy, and it’s something that I don’t know that I could do properly if it were happening right now. Also, it’s more interesting IMO to have them at different times. Tl;dr we wing it per story and slot them together— mod aster (mod star agrees I just can word better, in theory)

If you could tell the story of shakespeare high in a different format than an ask blog, would you? Obviously y'all are making very good use of the format, but would you want to write this as a animated series or like? a comic book? or is the form inseparable from the story? (@pedanticlecturer)

Pretty much what Star said— there are certain elements where it’d be neat to do as a comic or as an animatic. Like, the fantasy dream is like, an anthology webcomic of each story, where you can like, see other characters in the background and stuff. But to be honest, we develop a lot by what we’re asked— there was a post about developing worldbuilding by being asked questions and then pretending you’ve thought about the answer, and it’s not far off. Personally, it’s hard to just lay out a story, because I have a whole WORLD and what’s relevant? What are people interested in? It’s by getting questions that I can then focus in on an area to develop. And yeah, we Super didn’t think we’d get this far lmao — mod aster

i honestly hate LMH’s acting. and als (and this is very very me) he was dating suji and their age gap just eternally pissed me off. i heard he was terrible with park min young and didn’t defend her at all when she was attacked (they dated after his drama city hunter) and idk. i’m tired of hearing about these actors with alal these young it girls. just a combo of things.

what was the romance like? idk if you have seen goblin either but fuck. it’s not even kim go eun’s fault and tbh i feel kind of bad for her (also there was this like rumor she was going out with this actor and his text messages to her are SOOOOO WEIRD and i just felt really bad for her? and creeped out? lol) she’s a good actress too! then i saw lek 5 eps of govlni and swore ms eun sook was my MORTAL ENEMY.

if you haven’t seen nokdu flower i super recommend. it has all the things you brought up of course but the peasant revolution is an enormous feat of class solidarity. and i am like almost positive the men back then were trash to women but there’s some things i have never seen done in a drama and am very happy about. the female characters are real cool. like even if one doesn’t know how to fight (which isnt the case) the mind is actually sharp. 

and because it’s hard to put characters or people that were so...hm...commonly exploited? the ex slave owner that raped his slave before she was freed (jo jeong suk’s character, half bro of the other MC) was seen as a fucking rapist. like actually. and i havent seen that happen really at all. dramas are so rare to have leading women be abused in any like..very sexual? way. i hate to say “penetrative” bc that is never close to the breadth of the pain that abuse brings but it’s like you’re only truly ruined if you are forced to have a penis inserted into you. and when male characters were disgusting, the audience knew how we were supposed to feel about them.

gisaengs are also “technically” slaves. at one point they were fucking owned and the hold barely stopped there. so i fucking hate speaking of these really prolific women as if there was a choice in the matter. does it even count if you literally cannot afford anything else? i cant remember, but i’m pretty sure NF was not too bad abt this.

it sucks cos like....automatically you want to like female characters but when they are flawed and just written so poorly it is so glaringly obvious. and i’m not a fan of being handed scraps and liking a woman just bc she’s there. in fact it’s even more insulting. how fucking hard is it to write people we can even extract a little bit of like...hm humanity from? it really isnt hard lmao. patriarchy :)

yeah, i would prefer mayla because they have more buildup and moments but if maya were to end up with june i wouldn't hate it.

and i do not think a love interest is necessary and the skamverse absolutely needs a season without a love interest where the main just chills with friends and work on themselves. an aro-ace main would be amazing, too.

however the fact that it's realism only when it comes to the sapphic couple, it doesn't feel right.

maya as a character has been through so much and she absolutely did mistakes (which is why lola broke up with her) but she's working trough it and she showed that she is genuinely willing to put in the effort and open up, no matter how hard, because she really loves lola.

so, since characters aren't real people but tools that the writers use, what are they trying to show if maya ends up alone?

that traumatized people can't have relationships until they're 100% done with their healing (which could take years?) that even when you put in the effort you don't deserve nice things? that realism is not real until it comes to queer women who apparently can never get an happy ending and must always be perfect and make no mistakes and always do everything right?

it absolutely wouldn't be queerbaiting unlike someone says because maya, lola and june are all canon wlw and mayla were together but it definitely it's a sort of baiting, luring wlw fans with the premise of a whole season about a lesbian character and her relationship with her girlfriend and then keeping them on their toes, making them stay in the hope that mayla will be together only to be "ahah sike! they aren't endgame ;-) at the end and for maya to be alone. (that in the case they don't end up together, obviously)

i guess I'm just really frustrated because we can never have peace and we always get reminded that before being people, we're queer women.

if this was another show / format i would be more willing to watch a wlw story abt a break up n have them end up single n i see maya's character as someone who, in another show, would be very interesting to see choose herself n be single for a while. howeverrrrr maya in skam france shouldn't get that treatment n skamfr specifically shouldn't break up their only wlw couple for good, or like u said at the very least have the main character have a happy ending w someone else. it's not fair for the couple n it's not fair for maya individually bc like u said what kind of message does that send? that maya is just stuck in an endless cycle of despair? cmon

it's just v unfair to propose realism as an excuse for that in a show that's been ignoring realism since the beginning. i'm a huge elu divorce supporter but the truth is that hasn't happened to them or any other main couples (even arthur n alexia basically ended up back together even tho they had cheating as part of their plot??? i know they were confirmed broken up in s7 but 1. that was a different team n 2. i don't think they knew abt the renewal while writing s6) so it's definitely valid to see this as lesbophobia if they indeed make maya end up single in the end.

ive seen a few suggestions that mayla might get back together in s10 but i think that only works if the season is multi pov n even then it'd be rly shitty not to tell their full story during maya's season. it'd also feel kind of redundant... like if u go through all that trouble to show "realism" in them breaking up then why would u take back that message just one season later 🤷‍♀️

like i said if it was another show i might not feel the same bc i don't think all stories need to be happy if they include wlw characters n i don't think writers should make their decisions based on how much ppl love a "ship" but in the context of these dumb web series it's just not a good look if only the one (1) wlw couple gets this treatment.
